Marble benchtop kitchen

I have to confess I’ve never been a fan of marble. Whenever I’ve seen it installed in the kitchen or bathroom, I turn my nose away because I just don’t like it. I don’t know why I don’t like marble – maybe it’s the pattern? The cold feel of the stone? If I ever renovate a house I know with certainty I won’t be choosing marble benchtops.

I found it interesting to learn that marble, while expensive to install, is a pain in the butt to maintiain. It sounds worse than wooden benchtops!

I recently read this post on The Builder’s Wife by Angela Marks of Interior Solutions Brisbane who explained the difference between Marble and Caesar stone. While Angela admits having marble benchtops adds ‘a touch of luxury, elegance & certainly creates a statement with its individualism,’ there are many disadvantages to using marble in the benchtop. The disadvantages include upfront high expense to purchase, constant maintenance and difficulty to repair due to the softness of the stone. Marble can be easily scratched and can stain easily and react to food acids.

Some people still love the look of marble. I remember dad and I doing some plumbing work at a major client’s home and the client was installing marble on his walls. I hoped the client wouldn’t ask if we liked it. He did ask and thankfully Dad answered and said it was looking good. I remember jumping into the truck with Dad and asking him why do people with lots of money install old fashioned looking materials? I’ve never understood it.

There is a marble trend that I do like and that is Marble Homewares. For me, a little bit goes a long way and I love how these individual marble décor pieces have been styled.

As we all know, I have limited interior styling ability as seen from styling my buffet last week. It is a skill I would like to practice and become better at. I’m always great at selecting pieces, but not so great at putting them together. But I do love how the marble has been introduced in these spaces.

If you want to recreate a similar look, or unlike me you love marble but can’t afford to install it, I’ve found some fabulous marble homewares online from some of my favourite online retailers.
