Why a Public Liability Policy is a must for all Tradies

There are no ordinary days on the job when you’re a plumber. Everyday is different and every job has its own set of challenges. The only constant is the procedure for every job action which has a safety plan outlining the steps to perform the particular task without risk of damage, injury or death. Failing to follow the step by step plan would certainly end in either or all outcomes, so it’s a requirement for plumbers to know the safety plan and to follow it. And most do because it’s second nature – it’s common practice to do so.

We had a procedure for coring holes through a cement slab. This task requires three people. The plumber – who marks out where the core hole needs to go as per the plan and checks for any obstructions like an air conditioning ducts and etc, the engineer who checks the location of the core hole to ensure it won’t be drilled through a support beam in the building and the core hole driller who drills the hole. The plumber waits aptly under the floor below holding a bucket through the ceiling to catch the cored piece of cement.

One morning, my dad got a call to say the boardroom table in a conference room had been smashed because our plumber onsite had miscalculated where the cored piece of concrete would fall. Our plumber was waiting in the adjacent room. Thank goodness there was no meeting being held in the conference room because someone could have got hurt. The poor boardroom table didn’t fare well and needed to be replaced costing our plumber $1200 which he put through his public liability insurance.

Some months later, my dad went to enter a building on Edward Street where he wanted to check out a new job that was up for tender. Dad wanted to check if the plans were right and would often see if there was a cheaper way to completing the job as opposed to what had been drawn up on the plan. Most consultants would draw up designs against old as built drawings instead of visiting the site to see if their design could work. I stayed in the truck because there were no loading zones and drove around the block until he was ready to come down.

It only took one block to see that Dad was waiting for me on the footpath.

The building manager wouldn’t let my dad onsite because of his name. A plumbing company that my dad had previously worked for had kept trading under my dad’s name and they had worked in this particular building and caused $20million worth of damage because of work they had done in the building. Even though we could prove that the $20 million was not claimed on our insurance policy, because my dad had the same name as this plumbing company, and they shared the same trade, we were blacklisted from working in the building and subsequent buildings owned by this property manager. That’s why having a unique business name is important when you’re a tradie and why it’s not always great practice to use your name as a company name.

Having a Public liability policy is a must for all tradies, especially plumbers. These days, you can’t win a tender unless you have a certain amount of public liability insurance. Tradewise Insurance offers public liability insurance for all tradies including large commercial firms to the sole-trader.

plumber with a leak
No safety plan will mop up this mess

It pays to insured because accidents can happen unexpectedly, no matter how close you follow the safety plan.

As a consumer, it’s important to check that your plumber has the right insurance, because if their work causes damage to your property, their insurance will ensure the damage is rectified. Using a plumber with no insurance can mean any accidents now and in the future aren’t covered and you will be forced to put it on your home insurance policy which is a hassle you shouldn’t have to deal with and an excess you shouldn’t have to pay.

Have you ever checked to see if your tradie is insured before engaging them to do work on your property? And if you’re a tradie, ever caused damage to a property without meaning to?

The Blocktagon Guest Bedroom and Ensuite Reveals

2
The Blocktagon Guest Bedroom and Ensuites

Do you sometimes get confused by the judging on The Block? I do. Last night the judges didn’t like rooms that I didn’t mind and they even disagreed with each other. It just proves that style is in the eye of the beholder. Last week on The Block, the teams had to finish their guest bedroom and ensuite. Usually on The Plumbette I just like to share the wet areas – bathroom, kitchen and laundry reveals, but I decided to reveal the bedrooms so that if you missed last night’s episode you can get your quick fix right here.

First up to be judged was Kingi and Caro with a guest bedroom and ensuite that came second in the leader board again. They lost points because of the way they styled their cushions on the bed. Everything else in the room got a big tick from the judges. Doesn’t the navy bedhead contrast well with the dark grey rendered feature wall?

The tram door was also a winner in this bedroom and fitted well with the modern, urban vibe Kingi and Caro are wanting to create in their apartment.

The ensuite was simple and made good use of a small space. Unfortunately the basin was installed back to front with the overflow installed at the back of the basin, rather than the front. The plumber should have picked that up straight away when the basin got plumbed in – not that they could have changed it once the basin was set into the vanity. The concrete vanity impressed the judges and was the key feature in the ensuite.

There were mixed reactions on Suzi and Vonni’s guest bedroom. The glass feature wall was a bit much for Shaynna and Neal, but Darren loved it. All the judges liked the styling of the bed. I personally found the feature wall and wood paneling too much and I do wonder if the glass feature wall will date. I remember seeing similar photographs in my grandparents house. You’d want to be a fan of Autumn if you stayed in that room.

The girls opted to keep the ensuite simple using black tiles and rose gold tapware. The judges liked this balance, but the lighting was in the wrong spot.

Andy and Whitney produced a room that was a mishmash of styles. Nothing really worked together and the judges weren’t impressed that no wardrobe was installed which Neal pointed out would be a deal breaker at auction time compared to the other apartments that did have wardrobes in their guest bedrooms.

The ensuite was well executed and the judges were impressed with this room, compared to the guest bedroom. Whitney and Andy installed the new toilets with the buttons on the back of the pan. All the elements worked well together. I didn’t like the white and chrome tapware. I think white tapware dates quickly and is a pain to service, but that’s just my experience.

Dean and Shay don’t seem to put a foot wrong in The Block. They produced a stunning guest bedroom and the judges commented on how well placed the cushions were on the bed. The only criticism was the un-user friendliness of the wardrobe.

The ensuite was spacious and felt high-end – perfect for a penthouse apartment. The judges noticed and appreciated the attention to detail by including a concrete/rendered shower head which was something new.

Poor Luke and Ebony didn’t get a great result again this week. I actually didn’t mind their room and thought it was clever the way they used the pressed metal paneling. I loved the bright blues in the bed linen and for a guest bedroom, I thought the room came together beautifully. But the judges didn’t think so. The judges thought the room felt cold and couldn’t understand the pressed tin feature panels. There was an issue with the doors opening and blocking the entrance past the bed to the ensuite. Unfortunately the bed can’t be pushed further into the room to avoid this because of the wall sconces.

The judges thought the ensuite was better than the guest bedroom but felt the tile choice was dated. The black tapware and underfloor heating got big thumbs up from the judges. Shaynna also liked the concealed drain in the shower. Unfortunately they couldn’t get over the floor tile choice.

Which guest bedroom and ensuite did you like the most? Were the judges fair on Luke and Ebony’s room? Am I the only one that loves to see a bit of colour on The Block or do you like it too?

Learning to be on my own side

16
learn to be on your own side

On a Thursday morning I head to church to get fed. Not food fed – although there is food and coffee and lunch offered. I go to church to grow in my faith and to learn and to hang out with other mums. My girls love going to the kids church program. They love the leaders and the activities and seeing grandma because she always brings treats.

My girls are exhausted after going out on a Thursday morning. As you can see.
My girls are exhausted after going out on a Thursday morning. As you can see.

Yesterday I drove away inspired and wanting to change a few areas of my life. One area is being less focused on the negative rather than the positive. Lately I have been a little bitter about the sacrifice of parenting. At the moment, parenting has been exhausting. On top of that I’ve had an array of blogging and personal issues that have hit me from all sides and last week I got to a point where I couldn’t stop crying because I was at a loss on what to do.

But then I was reminded that life rarely has a perfect path that brings us to where we need to be. There are always storms. Living without fear when everything around you goes to crap is easier said than done. I know it’s important to focus on where I’m headed. It’s just not easy. It hasn’t been for a while. I keep reminding myself that I will get there because I have faith that I will. But there are no guarantees of smooth sailing.

The negative talk has been rife in my life at the moment and this week I decided enough was enough and I needed to be a little kinder to myself.

The truth is I want it all. I want all that life has to offer me, but I can’t handle it all – especially right now with my young family. Unfortunately focusing on what I can’t do or can’t have has led me down a path where I feel like my efforts are constantly letting me down. I think it’s a crazy cycle us entrepreneurial mums can get into. Maybe any mum really depending on what takes your focus after your kids?

This self-critical nature has become a habit and it needs to be reversed but I’m not sure how. Do I do less? Lower the standards?

Maybe I need to start cheering myself on with the small wins rather than berate myself on how far I have to go.

This quote resonated with me yesterday.

self-critical

My thoughts have been on the wrong team. Being on my own side is not arrogant. It’s about nurturing myself when I’ve missed the mark or making peace with my efforts. It’s accepting what is, is. It’s admitting that life doesn’t always go to plan and when it does, there will be a hitch along the way. There is no doubt about it.

It’s remembering my wins and repeatedly reminding myself how far I’ve already come. It’s reminiscing the good days and focusing less on the bad.

Feeding myself with positivity and going to church on a Thursday has helped me. I’ve been stretched in all directions in the last couple of months, but my hope is that while I’m being drawn back and stretched backwards like a bow, when released, I will propel further than I thought possible.

How have you been feeling lately? Do you suffer from being too self-critical? Do you wish you could be better at anything?

Home Improvement Thursdays Wrap Up and Kmart Style Challenge Update #HIT

Home Improvement

Our Kmart Styling Challenge has gone off with a start. We’ve had four entries…from the one person. Which is ok as the challenge goes for a month. If you’re looking to get involved, head to our Kmart Style Challenge post.

Kmart has just introduced some new marble homewares which are not only affordable but are easy to style in any home. The marble accessories aren’t available online, but I have seen them in store. There is a marble house door stop and a marble cross trivet. I’ve found the range in Kmart can be different in each store so visit a few if you can or why not call the store if you are after something in particular. I’m lucky I have 4 Kmarts I can easily get to.

I thought I’d share two of the entries into the #HITKmartStyle challenge. Karen from Me and Zebedee has shared her monochromatic vignettes using a mirror from Kmart in the first picture and the plant stand in the second picture. Styling is an art and I love the results.

Did you know the winning bedroom on The Block in the first week used Kmart accessories for part of the styling? Just shows you don’t have to spend a fortune to get the interior look you want.

Last week on HIT, Aaron from Mayfair Plumbing shared how to correctly glue PVC pipe. When I went to Tafe, I was taught the correct term was ‘welding’ PVC pipe because the primer and glue worked together to weld the fittings together. It might sound contradictory that I share Aaron’s post here when I recently posted how plumbing fittings should be only sold to licensed tradespeople. The thing is some plumbers have cut corners and haven’t primed their fittings. There are also some plumbing applications like simple storm water PVC pipe fixup where a plumber is not required. I believe if you are going to DIY, you need to know the right way to do it. Primer and Glue are a must for PVC connections. Aaron explains in this video how to do it right.

Erin from Seven Little Australian’s and counting shared the family effort it took to build their deck. I particularly enjoyed reading this post as Erin’s daughter’s weren’t afraid to get on the tools and give their dad a hand. I love this. You should also see the end result.

6 Ways Your Home can Pay Itself off

30
6 ways your house can pay itself off

Once upon a time, buying a house was part of the big Australian dream. We bought into that dream when we were in our early twenties and despite entering the property market early, it hasn’t been a dream to maintain the finances to sustain our dream house. We were ready to buy, but it’s taken a lot of hard work and input from my parents to make the best purchasing choices for our family home. Once you purchase a property, you’re under the contract of paying a debt back for 30 or so years which can sound depressing, but there are simple ways to make your property pay off itself. It’s all about turning your property into an income earning asset while you live in it. Here are 6 ways your home can pay itself off so you can own it sooner.

home can pay itself off

1. Turn unused space into a studio that can be rented out to a student or a single person. There are a number of ways to create a new dwelling in an existing property. For double storey homes it could be as simple as converting or building in downstairs. For single storey homes, why not look at converting a garage.  If you have a large yard, why not set up a container home? There are council regulations that must be abided by if you are to rent out a studio on your property or build a separate dwelling on your land. Make sure you check with your local council on what you can do (the laws are different for each shire), but once these guidelines are met, the income you earn from renting out this space can dramatically reduce your mortgage.

Turn unused space into a studio or granny flat

2. Rent out space in your home that you don’t use. We have a double car garage, but only one car so there is a lot of space that we can rent out to someone who requires a cheaper alternative to storing their gear in a storage facility. Check that your home and contents insurance covers your renters goods. To advertise storage space in your home, advertise on space out, gumtree or via word of mouth.

Rent out space for storage for people who go to work abroad

3. Rent out a spare room. This kind of arrangement may not suit everybody, but there are opportunities to house overseas students, university students who have come from the country to the city to study or singles who are happy to share a home. To advertise your spare room, head to Real Estate Share, or for overseas student housing check out Oz Home Stay and Student Housing Australia.

4. Install a vegetable and herb garden. Not only will this save on your food bill because you’re growing your own food, you can sell extras at markets or to family and friends. If you live rurally, set up a front yard vender so passersby can purchase using their spare change. It won’t bring in a lot of money but that spare change can add up over time. You don’t need a big yard to grown your own veggies. We use the side of our house and we have allowed a pumpkin vine grow through our backyard which produced 18 pumpkins all at once. And it only started from a pumpkin seed that was dispersed over our garden from the compost bin.

homegrown citrus trees
And the other side of our house where we grow citrus fruit – mandarins, lemonades and oranges

5. Install solar panels. Unfortunately, you can’t get as much money back when you sell your unused electricity, but you can keep your existing electricity bills down by storing the power you bank up to a battery than can be used for your personal use. Power bills are not getting cheaper so whatever money you save from your electricity, can be added to your mortgage. If you installed panels before the changes were made, that income can be directed to your mortgage. Unfortunately for us, we break even because we have high electricity usage.

solar panels on roof
Install solar panels

6. Install water tanks. Saving water is not going to reduce your water bill by very much, because if you study your bill, a lot of what you’re charged is the service to your property, not the water used. However, every little bit helps. Use tank water for outdoor purposes and washing your car. Grey water can also be used in the garden, but check with your local council on the regulations around grey water. The restrictions are based on environmental hazards, rather than being strict for the sake of it. You can check out my post here on more ways to save water and save money.

If you can do just one of these ventures, you might be surprised how easily you can bring in some cash that can be directed to your mortgage which can potentially save you thousands of dollars in interest. It’s amazing how a little can go so far when paying a mortgage.

Do you have a mortgage? Do you have any tips to share that has helped you pay more off your mortgage? What can you do to your existing property so it can make income?

The Block Master Bathroom Reveals Recap

3
The Block Master Bathroom 2015

I love bathroom reveals on The Block. To be honest, I love all the reveals on The Block, but I love seeing bathrooms because there are so many decisions involved when it comes to choosing the materials and fixtures. Last night, I enjoyed seeing the incorporation of colour in each of the bathrooms in some shape or form. We’ve seen a lot of black, white and grey bathrooms with timber features in past reveals and while they have looked amazing, sometimes I felt like we’d seen it all before. Last night was different and I was impressed with what each of the couples were able to achieve in their week.

The first couple to get judged was Kingi and Caro with their featured graffiti bath. It definitely made a statement and added wow factor to the bathroom. I’ve never seen a bath like it, and I didn’t mind it. When you make a bold choice for the bath, that style needs to be incorporated throughout the apartment, so I’m very interested to see how Kingi and Caro do that. The bathroom was neutral and it needed to be to allow the feature bath to stand out. Simple, rectangular shaped, chrome tapware worked well with the square lines in the bathroom. There was a lot of storage in this bathroom which got big ticks from Shaynna. I also loved the edging around the vanity basins which allowed for products to be rested on the vanity as most overmount vanity basins have at thin edge.

This next bathroom was by Whitney and Andy. They chose as simple grey and blonde timber look for their bathroom, which I felt I’d seen before. I think they spaced the bathroom well and allowed for ample storage with the double vanity unit. I wasn’t sure what to expect from them this week as last week their bedroom was a bit of a disaster.

Suzi and Vonni come across as friendly, hard-working ladies, despite the advertising of their blossoming body shape. I admire the girls for getting in and giving The Block a go. They’re willing to listen and get advice, but they’re not afraid to get in and get stuff done. I loved their tiled feature wall. It does remind me of the Gold Coast. The black tapware works well with the bathroom and I like the way the feature bath is on an angle. I wasn’t a fan of the ‘barcode’ LED lighting, or the pendant lights, but overall I think their bathroom was visually pleasing and I wouldn’t mind using it.

Luke and Ebony were able to finish their bathroom on time and opted to sleep through the tools down buzzer. Unfortunately they got not so great feedback for their bathroom. My favourite features were the navy blue tile feature wall, the black feature bath and the black taps. The judges didn’t like the mixing of the tapware – black tapware for the vanity basins and chrome for the bath. There was a mix of angles too – gooseneck for the bath spout and straight edges for the vanity basins. I thought the shower and toilet felt too cramped with the half dividing wall.

This is what a $40,000 bathroom looks like. I could definitely see myself lounging in this bathroom. I loved all the choices and I even liked the pendant lights even though the judges didn’t. Where did the $40,000 go? A fair bit would have been spent on the herringbone tiling, the black and brass tapware and the underfloor heating and window covering. I liked the way colour was introduced into the bathroom through the use of the Aura bath towels.

Dean and Shay ended up winning this week’s challenge, which I think they needed after spending a fair bit on this bathroom. I’m looking forward to see how they do their next rooms.

My Dream She Shed Essentials

26
She Shed

This post has been written in collaboration with Additions Building

The She Shed is the female equivalent of the man cave. It’s an area just for the woman of the household to escape and enjoy the serenity of quiet, doing whatever she pleases – and often that which keeps her sane. The She Shed has gained popularity in the last year as an inviting space for work and play. Some women use their She Shed as an art studio while others keep it as a space of their own where they can relax and read a good book. The She Shed is a place for retreat, where as a man cave is a place for men to disappear with their mates.

The whole concept of the She Shed got me thinking about what I would want in my She Shed, so I’m going to share with you my dream She Shed essentials and maybe you can share with me what you would want in yours?

My She Shed would have a 4 seater chaise lounge. I have long legs and I find a 3 seater can be a bit short for my legs to lay down on. The room would be decorated in bright colours with a mixture of floral and geometric prints.

I’d have a skylight to save on electricity costs by day.

I’d have a solar powered air conditioner to keep the space cool and not a hot box. The solar power would also help the electricity costs.

I’d have a large desk and computer so I could write. Wifi access would be a necessity.

I’d have a large book case to store magazines and books.

I’d have a working station where I could make my resin jewellery.

I’d store all my tools in easy reach and have my tool bag ready to go for a DIY project.

A Bose music dock so I could play some tunes would be a necessity.

I’d have a bathroom with a claw bath, basin and toilet – so I wouldn’t have to go inside to use the bathroom. I could bathe in peace and not have to share a bathroom. I’d keep all my expensive lotions and potions in this bathroom, away from little hands.

My She Shed could easily convert to a guest bedroom, if I felt generous enough to share the space with someone else.

Knowing what I’d have in my She Shed, begs the question of where I would have my She Shed?

She Sheds are typically sheds or a separate dwelling away from the main house, but land sizes are getting smaller and there isn’t always a lot of space in the backyard to erect a shed, which is the case in our house. I would have to be creative about where I would have my She Shed. Some creative ways to carve space from your existing home to create a She shed is by reutilizing the rooms you already have. Here are three scenarios that Additions Building could help you with to get you started creating your dream She Shed.

Building in a car port. Most car ports have a driveway where your car can be parked. Converting the car port into a She Shed is as simple as adding walls and windows for light and air circulation. The only negative part of converting the car port into a She Shed is you leave your car outside which doesn’t protect it from the weather.

Extending the sun room. Houses built in the 1970’s would have a sun room. The room is often narrow space at the front or back of the house with yellow tinged windows. The area can be revamped with some clever interior styling and storage options. Extending the sun room could be as simple as extending or removing a wall to make the space bigger.

Building in the Patio. If you have a large patio area, why not build in part of the patio in to create your She Shed? If you’re so inclined, the She Shed can be used as an indoor area to lounge in when holding outdoor parties.

For the moment, my She Shed is my office which is towards the front of the house and is easily accessed by the kids. A girl can always dream of what could be though.

What do you think of She Sheds? If you had one what would you have in yours?

My Kmart Hack and #HIT Kmart Styling Challenge

kmart styling

I can’t seem to window shop at Kmart. I walk in with no intention of buying and then I walk out with a few bargains. It seems I’m not alone as Kmart Hacks are now becoming a real thing and I like it. With the change of season, I like to change things up in the interior of my home and a Kmart Hack is just the thing to spruce it up. I’ve attempted my own Kmart Hack before and it turned out well and the pom poms are still on the cushions!

My next Kmart Hack was a bit of a fail. You can read about that one here.

I attempted my third Kmart Hack by painting polka dots on this Kmart White Jug. The results are a bit mixed. It’s a bit rough, but from the distance, the jug doesn’t look too bad. The jug only cost $8 and didn’t take long to paint. Best of all, if I change my mind about it, I can wash the paint off.

I used my remnants of Annie Sloan paint in a teal colour called ‘Florence’. After attending a party that introduced me to the Annie Sloan paints last year, I painted a wooden tray that I had hiding in my office. I hadn’t shared this project on the blog because I got a bit overwhelmed with family and life after Phoebe was born. But here it is. And it works beautifully with the painted jug. It probably even saves the bad paint job.

Hands that do more than pray

21
hands that do more than pray

On Father’s Day we had a special speaker at our church service and hands down it was probably one of the best sermons I have heard this year. Maybe ever. It’s a big call, because I’ve heard thousands of sermons. But this sermon explained a truth I’ve always known, but in profound way. It was the type of sermon everyone should have heard.

Father's Day
This was a photo booth that was set up at our church for Father’s Day.

I left church, inspired and ready to live my dream and then Monday happened and the weight of the world’s problems, combined with my own became a heavy load to bear. I lost it last night when I went to place Esther’s dinner on the table, but the plate missed the table and landed on the floor, splattering cheese, rice and chicken all over the floor. I was able to save it before our furry hoover (Bentley, the dog) inhaled the delicious mess. But I swore and I cried and the girls looked at me not sure what the heck was going on with their mum.

There’s so much going on in the world at the moment. I’ve had my own battles to deal with too.

I’ve been affected by the picture of little Aylan Kurdi. I’ve felt utter despair for the parents of William Tyrel.

Life can be mundane one moment and intense the next. There is never a happy medium and I wish there was.

I had my own little life scare when I arrived to my church last Thursday morning to attend Sisterhood. I’d arrived right on time and had the pram out with Phoebe sitting in the top seat and Magdalene and Esther waited by the car as I went to get my handbag out from the front passenger seat of our car. The next moment, I heard a scream and loud cries from Maggie as the pram had tipped over backwards with the metal handle bar pinning Maggie’s head into the bitumen road.

I swore in shock as I lifted the pram off Maggie and bundled her in my arms as she screamed in terror at what had happened. There was a massive bruise and scrape in the middle of her forehead and she kept holding her head and nose, crying in pain. I didn’t know what to do and quickly rang Jacob who told me to ring 1300 Health, but I was able to find our doctor’s phone number and they told me to drive straight away to the centre to get Maggie checked out for a possible concussion.

Maggie waiting at the Doctors
Maggie waiting at the Doctors

Esther was upset because we had to get back in the car and she was going to miss the kids program, and Miss Phoebe was in protest that she was being placed back in her car seat again.

That same morning, my mum had raced my grandpa to the doctor because he wasn’t well and then came over to wait with my girls while I got Maggie checked out.

Our doctor wasn’t too concerned about the forehead, he was more concerned about the lump on the back of Maggie’s head and told me we were extremely lucky because little kids died from hitting the back of their head where Maggie had.

Maggie ended up being fine, but the scare didn’t help my emotional state.

That night, I had no dinner organized so we resorted to eating microwave dinners which neither of us can stand. Jacob came home earlier from work, so we chose to have a walk to get some fresh air and finish the day on a high. While we were out a good friend of mine left some dinner and a bouquet of flowers at our door. When I got to say thank you to her in person on the weekend, she admitted she hadn’t had a great week either.

Beautiful flowers from a beautiful friend
Beautiful flowers from a beautiful friend

I was touched by this, because despite her having a not so great week, she took the time to bless me.

Sometimes we often wait until we have it altogether before we offer to help someone else, but if we waited for that to happen, no one would get help.

I feel a bit like this with the Syrian crisis. I don’t know what to do. On the weekend I donated money, but for me, that’s not enough. I want to do more, but I don’t know what. I want to write up a post of what we can do locally to help the refugees. Veggie Mama has written what you can do locally in Melbourne by purchasing produce from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre Food Truck, and this post also has some practical suggestions too.

Don’t underestimate the power of prayer. For the last couple of weeks I have been praying for the women and children of Iraq and Syria who have been raped and abused in the most horrific way. Remembering and praying for the victims of this war keeps it not only on mind but the prayers of many can ensure miracles of deliverance can happen.

Where is God when we see a crisis of this sort? What is He doing? How can He look on and watch what is happening in Syria?

The same questions can be asked of past wars and horrific crimes that are performed day in and day out. We yearn for the perfect life, but a lot of us still don’t understand the consequences from the fall. Rather than shake a fist at God, be part of the answer by helping local initiatives to help the crises. But I know a lot of Australians will simply do nothing because the need is so overwhelming and great. It’s too far away for us to worry about. We don’t want to be inconvenienced, and simply want a God to fix it for us.

I’m reminded about the power of prayer in times like these with the story of Daniel 10:2-14. Persistent prayer is needed to fight against the strongholds of evil. God hears every prayer and has angels working constantly but there are also evil angels that resist and try to combat the good. For us, in our simple thinking it makes sense that if God is God he can combat anything and he can, but don’t underestimate the power and authority of evil. Daniel 10: 12-14 explains how an angel was ‘detained’ by an evil angel in Persia and Daniel’s consistent prayers ensured a spiritual breakthrough where the angel Michael was sent to help.

We can feel like our prayers aren’t working, but we don’t have the vision and sometimes we don’t have the comprehension to understand what is happening in the spiritual world. So it’s easier to play the blame game. It’s a typical human response.

I don’t profess to know everything about spiritual matters. This year has brought about many conflicts of faith that have had me yearn to understand rather than walk away from my faith.

What I do know is I have been touched by what I’ve seen and heard and I want to do something and will continue to do so whether it’s through prayer, or donating or getting on board local initiatives that are set up to help.

How have you been feeling about the events going on in the world? Do you think faith can play a part in finding a solution? Do you know of other practical ways to help the refugees?

I’m linking up with Essentially Jess for IBOT.

Not Every Motivational Quote is for You #HIT

19

I love a good quote. They don’t beat around the bush. A quote inspires you and can whip your butt into gear to get working.

But not every motivational quote is for you. I think we (myself included) can become disillusioned with our love of quotes thinking we need to work harder and strive faster when we are already doing the best we can.

In the last 18 months, I have worked hard while trying to be a mum to a newborn, and two other little girls that are in constant need of my attention. I don’t think it matters really how old your kids are.  They need you at every age. Your kids just become a little less dependent on your for their basic needs as they get older. Working hard is not new for most parents because we do it already. Even business owners and entrepreneurs work hard at making their business a success so sharing a quote that tells you dreams don’t work unless you do can have the opposite effect on a hard worker.

Sometimes I wish quotes had a disclaimer or a ‘but’ added to them. For example,

Dreams don’t work unless you do, but if you have a baby, enjoy every minute with her because she was a dream once too.

Dreams don't work unless you do

Or

Work so hard that your signature becomes an autograph. But don’t focus so much on the autograph that you forget the family who share the surname of your signature.

Work so hard your signature becomes and autograph

Or

The pain of hard work hurts less than the pain of regret. But don’t let hard work make you regret the pain you cause others in the process.

motivational quotes

Or

Opportunities are disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them. Most people don’t recognize burn out either. Don’t go after every opportunity thinking it’s your last.

motivational quote

No matter where you are in life whether you’re running a business or attempting to be successful in whatever you choose to do, all will require hard work, but make sure you’re not pressuring yourself into a frenzy if you’re in a season of life that requires more from you.

It does not matter how slow you go as long as you do what you can, when you can.

And I need to listen to my own advice!!

Last week on Home Improvement Thursdays, we had another great link up. Please share the link up so others know they can join in too. Last week Simplify Create Inspire shared a challenge to declutter our home office. I’ve yet to do this but it is on my Spring Cleaning to do list because my office is in an open plan part of our house and it needs to stay neat and tidy. You can download a check list that Holly put together here.

Kylie from DIY Decorator shared her DIY project to create a Two Tone Staircase and the results are fantastic! You should see the before shots of the white stairs. The transformation is stunning.

I then suffered from wardrobe envy by reading The Organised Nest who shared a reader’s very well organized wardrobe. I could definitely put to work some organized bloggers to organize a few spaces in my home – in particular my wardrobe.

As usual, Nicole and I look forward to seeing you link up. Next week we have a challenge that we hope you will jump on board with and there will be a giveaway so keep your eyes peeled for next week’s Home Improvement Thursdays post.

Quickie Installs can turn into Quick Fatalities: The danger of selling plumbing fittings to the unlicensed

16
unlicensed plumbing

On the 7th of January of this year, a hot water unit exploded in Frankston VIC, partially destroying a house with the explosion being heard 2km away. The occupant of the house had tampered with the gas hot water unit by replacing a leaking temperature relief valve with a standard tap fitting. This DIY fix up turned out to be a major stuff up and could have killed someone. The pressure in the hot water unit forced the hot water unit to explode and the case of the unit travelled 100m in the air and landed on a nearby street. Thank goodness no one was hurt but the house had extensive damage and the occupant was given criminal charges by the Victorian Police for tampering with a gas appliance and doing unlicensed work. This is just one of many examples of what can happen when an unlicensed person does their own DIY plumbing or electrical work.

hot water tank explosion

It’s with this incident in mind, that I was horrified to see Masters advertise “Quickie hot water installation kits” showing and giving you everything you need to know to install your own hot water unit.

masters selling plumbing

The thing is, I’ve known about this issue of plumbing and hardware stores selling plumbing fittings to unlicensed persons for a while now, but I didn’t realise how bad it had become.

A blogging friend of mine, Holly from Simplify Create Inspire did point out that when she and her husband bought their hot water unit from Masters two weeks ago, they were advised to purchase this kit to save money on the install as the plumber would charge more for a similar valve kit. At no time did the staff at Masters suggest it was a DIY job for their install. Which is great to know, but I have no doubt that people will nod their head in agreement and go on to try and do the installation themselves. If the can buy the fittings, what’s stopping them from installing them too?

Back on the 7th January – yep same date as the explosion of the hot water unit in Frankston (this kind of freaked me out when I realized the same dates) I was stuck on the couch breastfeeding Phoebe when a friend of mine messaged me because her hose tap wouldn’t turn off. She wanted to know what to do and if I could go and fix it for her. I knew the hose tap would need to be replaced, but I was stuck at home with my three girls, with one tightly attached to my boob. After making a few calls to my dad and other plumbers, I was unable to get any of my plumbing mates to help her out (most were still on Christmas/New Years holidays). So I decided to guide her myself by explaining the washer in the tap must have been shredded and she would need to replace the washer as a temporary fix until a plumber could come and replace the hose tap.

I knew my advice wasn’t putting my friend into any danger of breaking laws because it is legal to change washers, however, I do encourage to use a plumber when doing simple jobs like this because the tap may need to be reseated. Hose taps are a little different though as usually they can be quite corroded and it’s just better to replace the hose tap for a couple of extra dollars.

My friend headed to Masters to get herself a washer and she was told to buy a new hose tap and sent me this message.

Masters Debacle

I sighed and said, yes the Masters guy was right, however, there was no vacuum breaker on the hose tap and replacing the hose tap should be done by a plumber, hence why I suggested getting a washer.

I didn’t hear back from her all day, until she called our old office line and my dad ended up going out to replace the hose tap. Unfortunately the water to the house wouldn’t turn off from the water meter, which meant the hose tap was running full bore so dad had to replace the hose tap under pressure. He also installed a vacuum breaker. After that debacle I made a note to explain to friends and older clients to find a plumber while on maternity leave –  even for the most simplest of jobs rather than have me explain over the phone or Facebook.

A couple of months ago, I noticed our back hose tap had a drip on it so I thought I would head to Masters ‘undercover’ and purchase a new hose tap. Jacob had to get some gardening supplies and we wanted to check out the new Masters that had opened up a couple of suburbs away from us. I headed to the plumbing fittings section and started looking at the hose taps and then I faltered because I couldn’t remember if I needed a male or female hose tap (the difference is determined by the opening at the base of the hose tap, does the water pipe need to screw into the hose tap or does the hose tap have to screw into the water line?) A male customer service rep came and asked

‘What do you need help with, love?’

To which I replied, I couldn’t remember if I needed a male or female hose tap. He asked me how old my house was and if the water was coming out of the brick wall and he promptly told me I would need a female hose tap. I was impressed with his logic and he was right. I did need a female hose tap. I then asked where they kept the vacuum breakers and this was where the conversation got interesting.

The customer service rep told me ‘love, you won’t want one of those. They are dearer than the hose tap.’ I shrugged and told him I wanted one. He showed me where they had them and off I went to pay for them.

Admittedly, the customer service rep was trying to be helpful to ‘save me money’, but he actually gave advice which was against plumbing by-laws. You MUST have a vacuum breaker on a hose tap on the main water supply because it is a plumbing by-law (AS3500 page 22 4.4.3 if you want to look it up). Vacuum breaker valves are a backflow prevention device which stops polluted backwater to siphon through to the drinking water supply. To be clear, if you spray your grass with a fertilizer, and use a sprinkler, the sprinkler can siphon (suck back) the fertilizer through to the hose tap back into everyone’s drinking water supply. The vacuum breaker stops the backflow of any water going through the hose tap.

Masters is not the only hardware store giving DIY advice to unlicensed persons (or even licensed persons like myself). I know Bunnings do it and I have been in other plumbing retailer shops where plumbing fittings have been sold to the unlicensed. I also understand that the staff are trying to be helpful to their customers. But an unlicensed tradesperson, giving advice to the unlicensed needs to stop. And if the customer service person used to be a licensed tradesperson, they need to be very careful about what they share with customers. Just like my blog. I have to be careful by writing what is wrong with a plumbing problem, without showing or explaining fully how to fix it.

Unfortunately, it seems we have to wait for someone to die, before anything is done to prevent unlicensed persons from purchasing plumbing fittings.

The issue is not being stirred because plumbers need more work. The issue is a matter of health and safety for the community. DIY plumbing installations can have a fatal effect on everyone. Quickie Installs can turn into Quick Fatalities. This is the danger of selling plumbing fittings to the unlicensed.

hot water tank explosion

Retail stores like Masters and Bunnings can play a major part in preventing DIY unlicensed trade work by simply creating a store policy for all plumbing (and electrical) fittings to be purchased by licensed persons. No license, no fittings. Manufacturers and retail stores would not see a decline in business, as plumbers would still need to come in to purchase said fittings when doing the work. The handling would simply change, ensuring the fittings would be purchased by the right hands.

unlicensed plumbing

What do you think? Should our retail stores stop selling fittings to the unlicensed? Have you ever tried to fix a plumbing problem yourself and failed? Do you enjoy shopping at home hardware stores like Masters and Bunnings? And for the record, I do enjoy shopping at Masters and Bunnings, I just wish the plumbing fittings were exclusively sold to people like myself who have a plumbing license. I usually purchase my fittings from Tradelink or Reece, however they too have the same policy of selling fittings to the unlicensed.

Tradies Balm is Good for Tradie Hands and Baby’s Bum #HIT

12
Tradies Balm

My hands have been so dry this winter. I haven’t gone anywhere without a tube of hand cream in my bag. Over the last couple of months I’ve noticed my hands have been really dry with skin flaking off the back of my hands, so I took notice when Tradies Balm started following me on Twitter.

Tradies are notorious for having dry hands: skin with blisters and cuts can be annoying when you’re using your hands all day on the tools. Tradies Balm is a solution that will not only heal and soothe dry hands, they can protect them from further moisture loss.

Tradies Balm is an all purpose balm. It’s not just for tradies. The balm can be used as a nappy rash cream, over tattoos, over insect bites and even as a lip balm. The balm can also be used to soothe skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. It’s a great balm to have in the first aid kit, in the tool bag and in your nappy bag. It’s good for tradie hands and babies bums.

tradies balm 20g tin

The tradies balm rubs into the skin well and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. The key to using this balm is to use it like you would a lip balm but for all over your skin. A small amount goes a long way.

I was sent the 20g tin to sample and after using it for a month, I have plenty left. Right now I have it on as a lip balm.

tradies balm

The best thing about Tradies Balm is that it is chemical free, petroleum free, paraben free, animal product free and has nothing artificial.

To order yourself a tin, head to the Tradies Balm webpage. This would also make a great Father’s Day present for a dad who has rough hands. The packaging is very man friendly.

Last week, The Builder’s Wife and I launched Home Improvement Thursdays. A big welcome and thank you to everyone who linked up. We are looking forward to growing the community, so feel free to invite blogging friends to join in with the link.

Last week, Aaron from Mayfair Plumbing debunked the myth that plumbers only use eels. He explained why plumbers should use a jett rodding machine to unblock storm water drains. The images show clearly how effective the jett rodders are at unblocking drains. Well worth a read because if you ever ring a plumber to unblock a drain, you can ask them what type of machine they have and have some understanding of what they’re talking about.

Sarah from The Routine Queen shared her bedroom make over. I love the fresh colours Sarah used for her linen. Everything ties in beautifully and her overall look is very stylish.

Nicole and I are looking forward to reading your posts for this week’s Home Improvement Thursday Linkup. Here are the rules if you want to join in.

Father’s Day Gift Ideas for the Tradie Dad

23
Father's Day Gift Ideas

This post has been written in collaboration with MOTackle

Do you struggle to find gifts for the man in your life? I do. I’m not sure if it’s a sign of the times. I’ve noticed we no longer wait until it’s a special occasion to buy something we want which often takes the joy away from the giver and makes it harder for them to come up with a gift.

Dads aren’t complex and shouldn’t be too complicated to buy for. Yet I tend to struggle with my own dad and find I gravitate towards the same gifts. This post is my attempt to come up with some Father’s Day Gift Ideas for the Tradie Dad – but it can be for any dad really. I’ve come up with some gifts that will suit all budgets and hopefully all types of dad’s tastes.

1. Why not get crafty and make this Hugs and Fishes Lolly Tackle Box? Eighteen25 came up with this fabulous gift idea using a clear tackle box and filling it with fish lollies. You could really fill it with any type of lollies if you couldn’t find fish shaped lollies. Attach a ribbon and card and your gift is done. Clear fishing tackle boxes can be found here.

2. A personalized hammer can make a thoughtful gift for the tradie dad or the dad that likes to get into DIY projects. A hammer like this may never leave the pool room, but you can be assured it will be a treasured gift.

3. This Tooletries Case will come in handy for the tradie dad that likes to travel. Alternatively dad can keep his Tooletries Case in the ute so he can scrub up if a job goes bad. My dad would have a few cans of deodorant roll around in his glove box. This case would keep his fragrance essentials in the one place.

4. If your dad has a dry sense of humour you could serve him his morning coffee in a toilet mug. A great gift for a dad who’s a plumber. If you want to get crafty and give dad a real laugh, why not fill the toilet mug with chocolate bullets?

5. Soap can be a boring gift to give to dad, but if the soap are shaped like building blocks, what’s not to like?

6. Jars of Fun is a new little small business in Brisbane where a jar is filled with activities kids can do with their dad. Orders for these close today to ensure your jar gets delivered in time for Father’s Day. This gift has a great deal of meaning to me because when Dad and I worked together, every Monday would we would have a Mondayitis container which had a selection of activities we could do in the city while at work to help us look forward to Mondays.

7. If your dad loves to fish, why not get him a new fishing reel? MOTackle have a great range of reels which you can click through to see here. If he loves to get out in the great outdoors, why not buy something that you can enjoy as a family together, like a kayak or canoe? If those presents blow the budget out of the water (pardon the pun), why not get a gift voucher?

8. Does your dad have a habit of buying his coffee in the morning? Well why not help him save some dollars without compromising on the quality of the coffee and get him this hand held travel Espresso Machine? This Handpresso can travel with him in the ute and looks so much more classier than a thermos of coffee.

At the end of the day, Dad’s love to spend time with their kids. Spending time with him and telling him how much you appreciate him can be the most cherished gift of all.  That and a full belly… so why not invite him over for dinner and a beer?

Are you organized for Father’s Day? Which gift would your tradie dad love?

Taking Stock – The Post that made me realise I need to get out more!

9

I was wanting to write a personal post with all the random stuff that has been happening here in The Plumbette HQ and I thought the best way to tell you was to use this Taking Stock post prompt which I enjoy reading on other people’s blogs. The prompt was create by Pip Lincolne from Meet Me At Mike’s, so I went to fill in the empty prompts and I got stuck on most of the questions. I got there in the end! It was a good exercise to go through to realise I need to play and bookmark more. Here is a glimpse of what has been happening in my life at present.

Making : Lot’s of lists. Lists of blog posts for The Plumbette and Styled by Bec. Lists of what I need to do after attending Problogger.  A list of clothes I need now that I’ve stopped breastfeeding. A list of things that need to be done around the house before Christmas. A list of Christmas presents I need to buy before Christmas.

Cooking : Nothing fabulous at the moment. I need to change up our dinners. I gravitate towards making the same dinners week in and week out. I’d love some family favourite dinner suggestions please!

Drinking : Water. Lots of filtered water. I don’t really drink much else.

Reading: My Bible. Our church has been doing a series on the book of Acts. It’s a crazy book where God does some crazy things.

Wanting: Life to slow down. We are nearly in September and over half the year has gone.

Looking: For new kitchen bench stools with backs. We only have two which Jacob and I have had since we got engaged ( 11 years old) and Esther and Maggie enjoy sitting at the kitchen bench to help me cook or draw or eat to ensure Bentley and Phoebe don’t steal their food. I need to get another stool so Phoebe can sit there eventually too. The question is do I buy three stools that match or buy 1 stool and try and paint or do something with the existing stools to make them match?

Playing: House of Cards on Netflix. I’m not sure if I totally like it, but I want to know what happens next.

Deciding: Whether getting Netflix was a good decision…

Wishing: It was easier to lose weight. I’ve been a bit stagnant lately in losing the post baby weight and I struggle with my sweet tooth.

Enjoying: This warmer weather and Spring coming early in Brisbane. I’m also enjoying this new filter on my Olympus camera that I learned at Problogger. It makes me look fabulous in every shot!

Me at Problogger with the "Mother-in-law" filter on.
Me at Problogger with the “Mother-in-law” filter on.

Waiting: For magpies to attack me. I hear they are swooping early this season.

Liking: That Spring is nearly here. Which season do you think is my favourite?!

Mummy and Esther at Kindy Day
Mummy and Esther at Kindy Day

Wondering: How Esther will cope with Prep next year. I can’t believe how fast she is growing.

Loving: That Phoebe is walking everywhere. She can now go to Kids Church which means, I am free from viewing the church service from the parent room. I feel like I’ve been in that room for 2 years. It’s nice to be free!

Phoebe is on the move!
Phoebe is on the move!

Pondering: How family life can change in the space of 5 years. We are coming out of the baby years and I feel sad but also very excited.

Considering: Painting our house. But do we wait until Phoebe and Magdalene have got their Picasso moments out or just bite the bullet and paint?

Buying: Groceries and paying bills. That’s it. Trying to save a buffer for our holiday in October.

Watching: House of Cards on Netflix. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but this weekend I said to Jacob ‘I want to watch something’. So we signed up to Netflix and realized it could be run off our apple TV. Winning.

Hoping: I have enough internet data to cover the shows we’ve been watching. Might get a nice surprise from Telstra next month.

Marvelling: At Magdalene’s grasp of words. Her speaking is becoming so much clearer. She has also started to say no to me more.

My cutie pie Maggie
My cutie pie Maggie

Cringing: At the Ashley Maddison scandal with two Christian men being found out. So awful for their families.

Needing: More time to just be. I’ve tried to stop putting pressure on myself to get things done and it’s been nice not to feel burdened.

Questioning: My time management. Could I be better at managing my time?

Smelling: Dusk’s calm candle which is a mix of lavender and rose. It’s my favourite candle scent.

Wearing: Jeans and a t-shirt. It’s my mummy uniform.

Following: People who follow me on social media. Isn’t it the right thing to do to follow back? Yet I’m following more people than who follow me. I’m not losing sleep over it but I find it strange of what is expected on social media.

Noticing: My plantar fasciitis in my right foot is starting to ease.

Knowing: Life is good at present and it’s going to get better.

Thinking: How to get more bloggers to link up to Home Improvement Thursdays.

Admiring: DIY Decorator blog. I like all interior style blogs. Our house is a mish mash of what we could afford and I want to make some changes but I’m not sure how. I definitely know my Instagram friends will be on call to give advice as needed.

Sorting: The messes Phoebe creates now that she is walking. She gets into everything!

Phoebe Opening Drawers

Getting: Excited about September.

Bookmarking: Nothing. How boring! I couldn’t think of an answer for this prompt! I will bookmark it for next time. 🙂

Coveting: Comfortable underwear.

Disliking: People who do the wrong thing by others and rather than apologise and face the music, they attack.

Opening: Junk Mail. I love Junk mail.

Giggling: At Maggie. She calls her toes piggies. Whenever I put her shoes on she asks me to be careful of her ‘piggies’.

Feeling: Tired. Looking forward to that holiday in October.

Snacking: On Cadbury Pretzel and Nut Chocolate.

Helping: Organise a mother’s group at Church. I tried to run one at the beginning of the year which didn’t turn out well.

Hearing: It’s going to be a scorcher this summer. Best to get that air conditioner serviced as it will be cranking before you know it!

How has your year been so far? Was August a busy month for you? Got any family dinner suggestions for me?

How to Create a Stylish Outdoor Area

8
stylish outdoor livable area

Check out these tips to create a stylish outdoor area you will want to use all year round.

This post has been written in collaboration with Australian Outdoor Living

One of my favourite times of the year is towards the end of August when (in QLD) we experience bright sunny days with mild cool temperatures. If you came up to the Gold Coast for the Problogger Conference on the weekend you would have LOVED the weather. It’s the perfect weather to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine.

When Jacob and I were looking for a new house to purchase, we were hoping to buy a place with an alfresco area: an outdoor area where we could entertain our friends and future family. Over the years we have added an array of furniture to create a stylish and livable outdoor area. The girls love driving their cars outside and I enjoy relaxing on the lounge, watching the girls play. Having an outdoor area adds extra space for our family to live in. Eventually we would like to get some blinds to close in the area and I’d love a shed to house all the outdoor toys.

To make our outdoor area work for our family, there are some key items that can make it a room that can be used all year round. Here are my tips on how to create a stylish, livable outdoor area.

outdoor livable area

1. Make sure your outdoor area has a roof

Some outdoor areas have sails and some have open trusses. To ensure you can make the most of your outdoor space, ensure you have a roof that can keep the area waterproof. In our first home, the outdoor area had trusses and a mesh covering which was hopeless to use when it rained. Jacob and my dad installed some corrugated roof sheeting to keep our area waterproof. You will need to check with your local council and get approval to add an extra roof if you wish to extend your outdoor area.

outdoor livable area roof

2. Ensure adequate storm water drainage from said roof

When you extend the roof, make sure you get adequate storm water drainage installed. A gutter will need to be installed on the edge of the roof and a downpipe or two to drain away the water. A flooded outdoor area is no fun to entertain in.

3. Get outdoor blinds

Have outdoor blinds installed so the outdoor area can become a new room. Outdoor blinds can block out noise and sun and they can add privacy when entertaining friends and family. Blinds can also block out the wet or cooler temperatures to make it an ideal area to spend outdoors. View Australian Outdoor Living’s range of outdoor blinds if you’re looking to add privacy to your outdoor area.

4. Let there be light

Ensure there is light – both electric and natural. We have downlights in our outdoor area so everyone can see each other when outside at night. Skylights are an economic way to allow light in during the day.

5. Consider temperature control

Install a ceiling fan that can circulate during the warmer months, and an outdoor heater for the cooler months.

6. Style with furniture to sit on and relax

This is pretty obvious! If you are going to spend a good amount of time in your outdoor area, make sure you have furniture that is comfortable for you and your guests. A table and chairs setting is ideal for meals and a chaise lounge and coffee table can be great for relaxing with drinks and a cheese platter. Make sure your furniture is specifically for outdoor use.

7. Decorate the area with plants that can live in the shade

Candelabras that hold citronella candles will keep the mozzies away. When choosing your cushions, make sure they are ideal for outdoor use and UV sun resistant. This ensures they won’t fade if left in the sun and they won’t go mouldy if they get damp.

8. Don’t forget the floors

Decorate the floors with outdoor rugs. This can protect the outdoor flooring and add colour to the area.

9. Allow adequate storage

In an ideal world, storage like an outdoor shed or furniture that acts like a chest, is great for keeping bikes and sports equipment protected from the weather. We currently leave all the outdoor toys in a segregated area under the roof of our outdoor area. I look forward to the day we can have an area to store it all so it’s not an eyesore during the day.

10.  Install a BBQ and/or outdoor kitchen

You can’t entertain outside if you don’t have a bbq. These days, it’s common to have an outdoor kitchen and bar area so that all food and drinks are within arm’s reach.

Do you have a stylish outdoor area? Do you like to entertain outdoors during the warmer months? What is essential in your livable outdoor area?

Copper Tapware and Home Improvement Thursdays Linkup Launch

14
copper tapware

Copper has been a huge trend in interiors for the past year so it’s not surprising that tapware manufacturers have followed the trend. Copper tapware is a big trend that is making a big statement in kitchens and bathrooms across Australia.

Copper Tapware
Astra Walker Bright Copper Tapware

I’ve always advised that chrome tapware is best, and I have been hesistant about the look of the copper tapware against a chrome plug and waste, but the mixed metals compliment each other. Copper taps contrast well against white porcelain and black tiles. If I was to build a house or renovate, I would seriously consider copper tapware for all the wet areas in my home.

Copper Mixer Tap
Astra Walker Copper Mixer Tap

Astra Walker and Sussex are the main tapware players that are offering copper taps as part of their stock. Roger Seller and Brodware also offer some copper/rose gold tapware. Some taps can be ordered in the copper or rose gold colour.

To ensure you get the best price on your copper tapware (or any taps and fixtures) get your local plumbing suppliers to give you prices on the tapware. My go to stores are Reece, Tradelink and Farleys (in Brisbane). Some exclusive designer bathroomware supply stores may be able to offer you a price too. I’ve often found them to be dearer than the main bathroom supplies stores. In some cases, some tapware manufacturers will exclusively supply through one store, so keep this in mind when you’re comparing prices.

The best way to look after and clean your copper tapware is to use warm soapy water or a bamboo cloth that can get rid of watermarks. Don’t use chemicals as they can wear away the colour over time. I don’t see this as a problem as copper can age beautifully. Most copper taps will be covered with a protective coating to ensure longevity of the tap.

Do you like copper taps? Would you install them at your property?

They are definitely a new concept!

Dear Renee – What you missed behind the scenes at Problogger Conference 2015

25

Dear Renee,

When you told Lauren and I at the beginning of the year that you weren’t going to go to Problogger Conference 2015 I was sad. How was our trio going to survive the Problogger experience with one third of our group missing? I know you would have looked at the photos on the weekend and felt a longing to be with us. And while you may have had a fear of missing out, I had a fear I would miss out on fun by not having you at the conference. You’ve become my blogging bestie. The conference experience was not going to be the same without you.

Of course I had Lauren and 698 bloggers to keep me company, but I still missed you and decided I had to share with you all the behind the scenes moments you didn’t get to experience because you decided not to come.

The RACV Royal Pines resort was fantastic from get go. The service was exceptional. I imagined long lines of bloggers waiting to check-in, but there were none. When we went to go to our room, our keycard wouldn’t open the door. The porter was very helpful by using his card to let us into our room and went downstairs to retrieve new keys for our room. The television had a welcome message and we had a great view overlooking the gardens. I did wonder how we were going to go with Phoebe in the hotel room. Jacob and I made do by moving the chaise lounge in front of the porta cot and piling the pillows up so that she wouldn’t see us when she would try to go to sleep at night. It worked, but with much audible disappointment from Miss Phoebe. You missed out on a comfortable bed and being woken by a screaming baby at 2am in the morning if you happened to stay in a room next to 518.

The first networking event at the Hydrate Bar was MADNESS. I didn’t move from the entrance of the bar for an hour because I was in my element catching up with bloggers I hadn’t seen in ages or was meeting for the first time. Jacob wrangled Phoebe while I talked. There are too many to bloggers to mention here and I’m scared I would forget someone should I list who I caught up with, but the vast majority would have known you too.  One of the few male bloggers came up to Jacob to ask him what he blogged about. He was thankful for some respite with the domination of the lady bloggers. It was another year of spot the male blogger. It got me thinking maybe Jacob could write a blog? We might ponder that some more. Before we knew it, it was 6pm and time to head to our dinner reservation. We were the first to have dinner and it was nice just to relax and not talk to so many people at one time.

Once Phoebe was bathed and put to bed, I left Jacob to look after he while she screamed MUMMA MUMMA MUMMA! I headed to Level 21 and caught up with some of my favourite bloggers. The conversation ranged around the difference between sorbet and sorbent and we even got a live demonstration of how to cook crepes. I had a second dessert before we headed back to our separate rooms at a reasonable hour.

The first day of conference was awesome. I got Lauren to save me a seat because we (Jacob, Phoebe and I) were late getting breakfast. We had a poo explosion of epic proportions to clean up. So much so it went everywhere and I gave strict instructions to Jacob to buy Phoebe new pyjamas that day.
The line to the buffet breakfast was very long which resulted in us taking a while to eat. Anna from Colour Me Anna gave up her table so we could get Phoebe settled to eat. I loved catching up with her and realized she is one of the few bloggers I didn’t get to have a photo with. Never mind. You can see us posing together at Kidspot earlier this year.

The best session for me was the beginners class on how to use my Olympus camera. As you know I’ve had the camera for a year and because we received the camera around the time of Phoebe’s birth. My priority back then though was learning about my newborn rather than my new camera. My mind was officially blown by how amazing the Olympus O-MD EM10 is. I was even given a tip on how to put a filter on the camera so I’m always looking my best. The cost of the conference was worth that session alone. Matt from Olympus was very patient and he totally blew my mind when he showed how the screen could come away from the camera. I couldn’t wait to tell Jacob about it and was deflated when he already knew!

The last session of the day was from Heather Armstrong of Dooce. A blogger who has had her fair share of being attacked online. She showed courage by sharing what people had written to her over the years while she wrote her personal blog. I walked away from that session thinking about how I would handle negativity online. Usually my first reaction is anger, and then I want to retaliate with a smart ass response. I need to work on this.

Once the last session finished for the day, you should have seen the mass of bloggers heading to the lifts to get ready for the networking party. I wished I had my plumbing shirt on so I could skip to the goods lift. Eventually staff did direct bloggers to the goods lift. When I finally got into a lift, you wouldn’t believe it but the lift got stuck. Of all times for a lift to get stuck, it had to happen when I was busting to go to the toilet! We were stuck for around 10 to 15 minutes. It could have been longer. There were helpful suggestions of periscoping our fate. A few photos were taken. Caro Ryan from Lots a fresh air admitted she got stuck in the lift at QT at the last conference too. (mental note, don’t enter a lift with Caro in future). After consistently ringing the bell and calling reception to rescue us, someone suggested trying to pry the doors open with our hands. Would you believe it worked and our lift had stopped at the Lobby. I was glad to finally get out of the hot lift. I was even more thankful no one had decided to drop their guts.

The networking party was heaps of fun. I didn’t venture too much from the entrance because I was in my networking element. I tried to message Lauren to find where she was. In the end, she and Lucy came and found me. I was a little worried about my outfit because I was scared it was too much BLING, but I saw bloggers with light bulbs wrapped around their heads and I much preferred my style of attire. I knew I’d hit the jackpot when Aleney from Boy Eats World offered to buy the dress from me. I wrote about where I got my dress from here.

I said hi to Heather Armstrong from Dooce. I felt sorry for the all the bloggers trying to get her attention when all she wanted to do was eat her food. So I stepped in and held her plate so she could eat. I also got a photo with her just for good measure.

After countless selfies and catching up with more bloggers and meeting new ones, I headed to up to Lauren and Lucy’s room. Dannielle joined us in her pj’s and we got to talk a bit more. At 10:30pm I said I had to go. I said the same thing half an hour later. By 11:30pm, Dannielle and I left to go to our rooms. When I got to my room, Phoebe was fast asleep and Jacob had waited up for me. By the time I got snuggled into bed to snooze off, Phoebe woke up. It took Jacob and I 2 hours to get her back to sleep. I was exhausted. I was glad for the sleep in the next day.

Nothing really out of the ordinary or eventful happened on the second day of conference. I JUST GOT TO SIT NEXT TO Mrs Woog during the session by Carly and Christina. I felt like I was sitting next to a celebrity. I hoped that my bowel would behave because being nervous does funny things to my lower system. It did and we ended up taking a selfie. It’s on my post on how to stand out in a noisy crowd and it’s above in the collage.

I was able to catch up with some bloggers who blog at The Joy Project. They had previously asked for my advice about some aspects of blogging, so I was DELIGHTED when I saw them at the conference. While the conference is a place where you can relate to everyone because they write a blog, these ladies were even more relatable as they had similar beliefs to me. You should read their blog. It’s specifically for people who arrive from overseas and try to settle in Australia. They also share day trips and reviews of places to visit. Although, maybe they should check out your post on Kidspot on great places to go in Brisbane as a family.

There were times during the conference where I stood by myself contemplating who to speak to next or just enjoying the solitude of not having to talk to anyone. In those solitude moments I thought of you and hoped the photos weren’t making you envious.

I left the conference motivated to do several things rather than one thing. One of those things was to write you this letter to fill you in on what happened behind the scenes. I’ve done that now, so I’m ticking it off my list. You have to come next year. I hope your FOMO kicks in and you won’t hesitate buying a ticket to next year’s conference.

How to stand out in a noisy crowd: A Problogger Conference Recap

44
Problogger conference with other bloggers

If you have been following me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, you would have known that I attended the Problogger Conference on the weekend. I have written about Problogger before on the blog (what I learned, how to do it with a newborn, my first Problogger Experience), but in case you’re new or have no idea what Problogger is, it’s Australia’s biggest blogging conference and this year 700 bloggers from around Australia (and overseas) attended on the weekend. In the last three years, Problogger has been held on the Gold Coast so I have made it a priority to attend each year. This year, the conference was held at the RACV Royal Pines and they couldn’t have made our stay more delightful.

I had many ideas on how to relay the information in a way that will help you in whatever life or business circumstance you are in. If you’re a blogger or a business, this post is for you. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, this post is also for you because I’m going to share a bit about the last year of blogging for me.

The biggest change I noticed at Problogger this year was not just the location of the conference but the sheer mass of bloggers in the one building. I was always running into someone I knew, but there were also many bloggers I did not recognize which said one of two things – many new blogs have been started in the last year and the blogosphere is nosier than ever. While I didn’t feel threatened by the sheer volume of new bloggers – I’m a big advocate for starting a blog and I don’t mind a crowd, it did make me wonder how I or each of us were going to stand out in a noisy and busy blogosphere.

In the last year I have seen an influx of new blogs come through my newsfeed. We all have different reasons to blog. My reasons have changed over the last three and a half years of blogging. It’s important to remember the ‘why’ of my blog so that I’m always delivering content that helps readers and so I don’t lose my purpose while trying to maintain the blog. It’s also good to remember the why in decisions you are living with right now. Why you started that business, or why you chose to be a stay at home parent or why you chose to go back to work full time and put your kids in care. Remembering the why allows you to get on with what you need to do and eliminates the guilt or negativity that often follows with any decision we make regarding these things.

Darren Rowse, organizer extraordinaire of Problogger, opened the conference with this gem of wisdom:

The wellbeing of my blog is based on the wellbeing of me.

I think this is true in all aspects of life.

As you know, this year I have never felt so pushed for time juggling a newborn, a busy family life and work. I’ve been living with no margin. Darren’s talk got me thinking about what I can change in my schedule to be more productive and what I might need to ‘drop’ in order to make headway in other areas of my life.

Essentially, the main points I got from Darren’s session was to look after me. Invest in me by reading and doing things I enjoy doing and this will help my output. I need to get moving and live healthier so that I can think clearer and be more creative.

Most of all, I need to get better at scheduling blog work outside of normal mum duties and no work on the weekend. When you’re a mum with little kids, the spare pockets of time left to blog or work are late at night, early in the morning and on the weekend when Jacob is home, but the issue is all my spare time has been filled. Following a better schedule is going to be the key here.

The next session after Darren was Jadah Sellner of Simple Green Smoothies. She spoke on how to build your community online. She reiterated a bit of Darren’s talk by saying

Anything that compromises your health and relationships has to go.

Jadah relayed her success story and how she had tried many things in the past that had failed or hadn’t brought her to where she wanted to be.

I wrote down one thing that resonated with me from Jadah’s presentation and that was “there are riches in the niches”. Often a niche can make you feel trapped in how you write. I have found my niche as a plumbing blogger has kept my ‘why’ in close proximity. In another session, Mrs Woog from Woogsworld encouraged being nicheless as a blogger was great because you can write about whatever you want. I, personally do both to keep my blog interesting.

Mrs Woog and I
Mrs Woog and I

Jadah ended her key note by getting all of us bloggers to stand and put our hand over our heart and say

I am a glow stick. I need to break before I can shine.

And here is where I want to finish in answering the question how to stand out in a noisy and busy crowd?

Quite simply you need to persevere with your blog, remember your why and shine the best way you can in the best way you know how by writing from your heart.

Glowsticks make a spectacular sight when all of them glow together. It’s the same in the blogosphere. If we’re all glowsticks then collectively we are bringing attention to a new media that has the potential to change and educate people in a personal way.

While you don’t necessarily have to have a niche to write a blog, what is one thing you want to be remembered for? Use that to differentiate yourself from the crowd. For me, it’s being a plumber, for countless other blogs there is usually one thing that differentiates us from the other.

Authenticity was a big word that was thrown around at the conference and it plays a major part in the way you keep your glow.

Authenticity

It was also said that personal blogging is dead and has the potential to die in Australia. I disagree. We are all moved by stories. Learn from other bloggers who have burned out on how to prevent the same happening to you. We can always learn something from each other.

If you went to Problogger conference, who was your favourite speaker? If you didn’t, does any of this post resonate with you? Which parts?

I’m linking up with Essentially Jess for IBOT.

How to create a Stylish, Livable Laundry

26
livable stylish laundry

This post has been written in collaboration with ASKO

In the last 18 months I’ve seen a real push in home improvement projects to create a livable laundry space. If I’m honest, the last place I want to spend more time in is the laundry. It’s not a place I want to dwell in, other than to fill the washing machine with dirty clothes and remove freshly washed clothes to hang outside.

The first home Jacob and I owned didn’t have a laundry. We had a laundry tub and washing machine in our single car garage. For the two of us, the arrangement worked fine, but I knew that if we were going to have a family, we would need a laundry.

We upgraded to a bigger home and it had an internal laundry with a storage cupboard. In recent months I have been thinking about how to make our laundry more user friendly because we have no shelves and limited space. I like the idea of making over my laundry to be more livable – but not because I want to spend more time in there. Mainly so I can keep baskets of washing in the laundry and not in my living room. With some research and plumbing knowledge, here are some tips on how to make your laundry more stylish and livable.

laundry renovation tips

1. Light and Air – your laundry needs to be positioned in a room that has access to outside and can easily allow light and air in. The laundry needs to be well ventilated so having a window and/or sliding door to access outside is essential. Laundries can be quite damp which can cause mildew to grow on the walls and ceiling. Make sure the walls are tiled or painted with mould-resistant paint. An exhaust fan – like the ones in bathrooms, can also help with removing moisture from the room to prevent mould and mildew growth.

2. Organise the layout – If you are renovating an existing laundry space, the plumbing will already be set in position for you. To save plumbing costs, you can hook up your appliances to sit where the plumbing has been set already, or you can organise your plumber to change the layout for you. The laundry tub waste can often be diverted under the kicker of a cupboard. Just beware that your design may be limited depending on space and how much you have in your budget to fix up holes in the walls.

storage in the laundry

Before you change the layout, work out what needs to be installed in your laundry. Will you have a front loader washing machine or a top loader? If you’re in the market for one, click here. Will you have a dryer and some cabinetry and shelves? Will you have a drying cabinet like the one from ASKO? Maximise the space in your laundry for extra storage to store miscellaneous home items like cleaning equipment, ironing boards, outdoor entertainment equipment or pet beds and bowls. Also ensure that when you install your dryer above a top loader washing machine you can open and close the lid. It’s a common mistake to install the dryer right above the top loader which deems the washing machine unusable.

laundry renovation tips - install two washing machines

3. Choose your appliances wisely – When you have children, your washing machine becomes a workhorse and is relied on to wash many loads of washing. It pays to invest in a washing machine that can do large loads. You might consider investing in two washing machines (if your space can allow it) to keep up with the laundry needs of your family. A dryer can be a great investment for emergencies or when you have a season of wet weather that makes it hard to get clothes dry. A retractable hanging rack is a more green and economic solution if you have no room for a dryer. Or why not install a drying cabinet? This is a new way to dry your clothes without the need for ironing.

4. Choose your taps and fixtures conveniently – Choosing the right tub for your laundry is important. You will want a deep tub for soaking clothes and you may choose to have a double bowl tub so that one bowl can be used for soaking and the other used for convenience like hand washing clothes or filling the dog bowl. Tapware can be a simple sink mixer or you might like to install a gooseneck mixer to add a bit of style to your livable laundry space.

5. Flooring – The floors in the laundry should be water-resistant and not slippery when wet. It’s not compulsory to have a floor waste in the laundry, although having one could give peace of mind if you have a laundry tub or washing machine overflow – but this a rare occurence. Ceramic tiles or vinyl floors work well in laundries.

6. Style it – Once you have decided on your layout and design, add some finishing touches using accessories like some wicker laundry baskets. If you’re so inclined you could empty your washing powder into canisters for a fresh and neat look. You can also personalize the space with a print or two. Anything Goes broke our Date Night Drought!

Anything Goes Brisbane

On Friday night, Jacob and I got to go out for a date to see Anything Goes. The last time we had a date with no kids was the night before I had Phoebe. After a massive year of change and finding our feet with our three young girls, the date was long overdue.

Nuffnang sent an email asking for bloggers to write why they would like to go see Anything Goes and my email was along the lines of wanting to break the date night drought. When I got the email last Wednesday to say I was going, I jumped up and down.

The last time Jacob and I saw a musical was when we saw Mary Poppins. We are fans of going to see live shows and we used to perform in them pre-kids, but since we’ve had kids, it’s been one of those things that we stopped doing due to time and budget.

I was able to book my mum to babysit at the last minute and had another chance to wear my new dress, bought for the MIGAS awards. After I received our tickets from the Box Office, I made the mistake of walking into the men’s toilets. This wouldn’t have mattered normally if was wearing my work shirt, but I was dressed up. Thankfully I was able to laugh about it and walk quickly out and head to the bar where I got to meet Karin from Calm to Conniption. Sharing my outfit on Instagram and Facebook proved helpful for all the bloggers congregating in the bar area. They new to flock towards me and my red trench coat. I enjoyed meeting other bloggers on the night. One of the best parts of blogging is meeting a tribe of people who get what you do and why you do it.

Friday night reminded me how much I enjoy seeing a show. Anything Goes would have to be one of my favourite musicals to date. I enjoyed it more than Mary Poppins, The Wiz and The Lion King at West End, London. I loved the costumes, the humour and the storyline. If you’ve never ventured into seeing a musical, Anything Goes would be a great show to see to ease you into the live show culture. The storyline is based on two unlikely couples boarding a ship and finding true love – not necessarily with the partner’s they boarded with.

The musical stars Caroline O’Connor and Todd McKenney. Caroline O’Connor was fabulous and I could watch and listen to her sing for hours. I enjoyed Todd’s performance of his character too. I like to see how actors perform after they get celebrity status after being on a show like Dancing with the Stars and McKenney doesn’t disappoint. His performance is quite amusing to watch.

Anything Goes has one week left in Brisbane and then the show heads to the Sydney Opera House from the 5th September.

If you’re looking for a romantic night out, head out to see Anything Goes. You will honestly love it.

Special thanks to Nuffnang for the tickets and choosing to give Jacob and I a free date night out. Shame I had a headache the next day. Obviously not used to nights out and need to ease myself into them again!

When was the last time you saw a live show? Are you a fan of musicals?

Toilet Etiquette for Air Travel

toilets at the airport

I love to travel and I love nothing more than working out my outfits, packing a bag and heading to the airport to fly and experience a new location. Flying with children adds another dimension to the experience and I do look forward to when I don’t have to choose between packing two pairs of shoes or nappies and wipes because I’ve got limited suitcase space. Nappies are bulky! The only good thing about packing such items is when they get used, you have more room to pack new purchases like souvenirs.

I’ve read some amazing posts with tips on how to travel with parents, how to avoid getting ripped off at the airport and the ten commandments for air travel (aka how not to be a d*ck on a plane). But no one has addressed the etiquette of using the toilet while travelling and I feel that my plumbing expertise must address this important matter for the benefit of future trips for myself and everyone who likes to travel. So here are my tips on toilet etiquette for air travel.

Preparation

If you know you are going to be on a long flight the next day, be wise about what you choose to eat the night before a big day of travel. A hot curry may sound delicious and comforting, but it may not be so great if you have to rush to a loo in a pressurized cabin. Avoid any kind of hot seasoned food because the more air you breathe through your mouth while eating said hot food, the more you will be tooting like a horn the next day. The smell and sound alone are unpleasant for other travelers. Especially in a confined space like a plane. Don’t underestimate the power of a hot curry in your bowel the next day. If you feel a tsunami of lava rushing through your bowel you could have an unfortunate mishap during turbulence. You also don’t want to miss your flight because you’re stuck on the toilet. Best to stick to a steak and three veg or a pasta dinner the night before travelling. And pack spare undies.

Go to the toilet before you board your plane

I know most people do this anyway, because at all costs we try to avoid using the toilet on the plane. But if you are on a long flight, it’s unavoidable. Going to the toilet before you board your plane prolongs the inevitable up in the air.

Be considerate using the toilet at the airport

It’s all about choosing the right cubicle when you use a toilet at the airport. And sometimes you have no choice because the line is long and you use the next available cubicle. Depending on what you have to do, use the paper seats if available, but if there are none offered, squat and hover over the toilet seat. Check behind if you’ve splashed or missed the bowl. CLEAN up the splashes before you go. Make sure the flush does in fact flush away your production. Make sure you leave the toilet in a nice state for someone else to use.

If your toilet is already a whizz crime scene, tip toe in and hover. And hope the hem of your jeans doesn’t get wet. Once finished, in passing warn the next person who walks towards your cubicle that the previous person before you had bad aim. Don’t worry if they judge you. You will never see them again anyway. Hopefully.

Men, if your choose to use a urinal, please don’t whizz on an already blocked urinal to cause the blocked contents to overflow from said urinal. Aim and common sense is key here. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Be quick in the Cabin Toilet

The only quickies that should be done in the toilet cubicle on a plane are the wee (and heaven forbid poo) kind or if you need to change your baby’s nappy. Toilets on planes are not for sex or any other kinky activities. Men, please aim straight and don’t rebound off the back of the toilet lid. Women, if you hover, please wipe any drips off the toilet seat. Aim can be compromised due to unexpected turbulence. When taking your young kids into the toilet, flush the toilet with your child facing the door. The ‘whoosh’ sound can scare them. I know it scared mine.

Be patient using the toilet at your destination

There is always a big line up to use the toilet when a plane has landed. It’s a cumulative of travelers who have held on while flying or have had a few too many drinks up in the air. Be patient and wait in line. If the disabled toilet is available for use and you know you’re going to be quick, you can use this in emergency type toilet situations, but be mindful that these toilets are specifically for those that are disabled or parents who need a change table.

Pack Hand Sanitizer and Wipes

One of my pet peeves about airport bathrooms is their lack of hand towels to dry your hands thoroughly. There is nothing worse that washing your hands after going to the toilet and all the hand dryers are being used or they don’t work. Have some hand sanitizer or hand wipes on hand for these situations. And use your elbows or the back of your hands to push or open doors. You don’t want to get sick while on holiday.

Have I missed anything? I’ve tried to address the basics. It all comes down to common sense and being hygenic. We often take for granted how blessed we are to have toilets that flush and clean water on tap for washing hands. Using the toilets as intended ensures they are ready for use by everybody passing through the airport. No one wants to start their holiday with a toilet mishap.

If you’re a seasoned traveler, can you add any helpful toilet tips? Wish to share a bad toilet travel experience?
