My Homeware Purchase Regrets – All The Things I Regret Purchasing for my House

21
my homeware purchase regrets

On the weekend I read an article by Elle Décor saying these are the home trends you should get rid of in 2017. While reading the post, I thought about my homeware purchase regrets because sometimes my eagerness with a trend, doesn’t always meet my expectations once I’ve taken it home.

I’m quite partial to a trend and will jump on board if I like it.

When we got our pendant lights installed in copper I KNEW copper would no longer be on trend. And I kid you not, I read an interiors article that said, ‘Get all copper out of your home, replace it with brass!’ Thankfully we didn’t buy our lights to follow a trend. We bought them because we liked them and felt they were the right colour to add warmth to our open plan dining and living area.

Interior styles and homewares fascinate me. I love reading interiors blogs that show a clever DIY homeware project or offer the latest décor trends available to purchase. I do like change – but I can’t always afford it.

Sometimes when I I’ve had money to burn, I’ve jumped onto the trend and bought into it, only to find myself disappointed because it doesn’t meet my expectations or I just simply no longer like it.

I thought I’d share some of these homeware purchase regrets with you.

1. Linen Sheets

A number of bloggers shared how they LOVED their linen sheets. I’ve never been a fan of linen – even when I wear it. It creases so much and I have often classed it as the fabric for older women. I did change my mind when Bohemian Traders brought out some linen dresses. But when it came to quilt covers and sheets, I wasn’t convinced. Until I read a few blogs that shared how amazing linen sheets were to sleep in and that a few major bed linen retailers had sales on them. I thought I’d tread the linen sheet water and bought a $200 set of linen sheets and, neither Jacob or I like them. Compared to our soft 1000 thread count, hotel grade white sheets, linen sheets feel like sandpaper. Despite having had them for a year or two now, they haven’t got softer. You also don’t get that cool sensation when you get into bed for the first time either. We’ve stuck with our linen sheets because how can you return them when you’ve slept in them?! But I definitely learned my lesson in this and will only buy good quality cotton sheets in future.

2. Kmart Homewares

There are so many memes about Kmart. A lot of people admit they can’t get enough of Kmart homewares and I did at one stage jump in on the craze… until I had a shelf full of no longer trendy cheap homewares that I no longer liked. I rarely go to the homewares section in Kmart now. There are only so many fake plants and vases a house should own. The minimalist movement has certainly changed my opinion on homeware purchases. I much prefer to buy unique pieces that no one will have rather than mass produced items. I still have a few Kmart pieces on display, but I recently donated a whole heap of homewares to a charity because all they were doing was gathering dust.

3. DIY Home Décor Projects

I will give DIY a go, but most times, the project doesn’t always turn out the way I had thought it would in my head. My Kmart Hack pom pom cushions are in desperate need of being replaced as the trimming has started to thread away and Jacob never liked them in the first place. He doesn’t understand my pom pom obsession. I’ve even sometimes spent more money on the DIY project, than what it could have cost me to have the item already made.

4. Trays

I have never been able to master the art of styling a tray in our house. Every time I attempt to create a vignette or some sort of table display with a tray, it looks less than ordinary. Rather than give them away, I now use these as grazing platters to take to friends houses for dinner get-togethers.

trays are a homeware purchase regret

Have you got any homeware purchase regrets? Do you like linen sheets? Have you acquired a lot of Kmart Homewares? Do you change the interior of your house as soon as a new trend comes on board? I’d love to know.

Tradie’s Lunchbox – Sweet Chilli And Tuna Two Minute Noodle Salad

0
tradies lunchbox two minute noodle salad

The last time I had two minute noodles was when I was pregnant (well actually I lie, I had them recently when devouring this two minute noodle salad recipe). I always had packs on stand-by for when the hunger pangs came. I always felt like something tasty, carby and warm that could fill my tummy quick before I felt nauseas. Two minute noodles were the perfect snack to have on hand because as their name suggests, they take two minutes to cook.

Everyone has a Two Minute Noodle Memory

I’m sure everyone has a story about two minute noodles. I remember at school, friends would take a pack of two minute noodles to school for lunch. They’d eat the pack like a packet of chips, breaking the noodles up and adding the dry flavouring. It was often messy, but when I did try it, I didn’t mind it.

When I lived at home with my parents, I would often buy my own packs of two minute noodles in foam cups, ready for me to take to work. I can remember when I went to grab one to take to work with me and all my packets of noodles were gone. When I asked where they went, my brother admitted to eating them all!

Today’s recipe uses two minute noodles as the base. The recipe was inspired by a That’s Life recipe which I’ve altered to my own tastes.

two minute noodle salad ingredients

When making this salad, be sure to break up the noodles when placing them in the boiling water so they aren’t long a stringy. This allows for the rest of the ingredients to mix together easily.

two minute noodle salad dressing

You can also add whatever dressing you like. The dressing in this recipe is mild, but you can make it stronger to your preferences. You can also swap dressings and add the Asian Pasta Salad dressing which would work beautifully with this salad.

We’d Be Up Crap Creek Without Licensed Plumbers And Plumbing Apprentices – World Plumbing Day 2017 Breakfast

15
world plumbing day 2017 apprentices

This post has been written in collaboration with the Master Plumber’s Association of Queensland for World Plumbing Day 2017

You don’t realise how valuable plumbers are until you have crap overflowing from the toilet, or your cold water tap won’t turn on in the heat of summer, or your hot water system decides to belly up in the middle of winter.

Fresh drinking water and sanitation are not a luxury. Plumbers are vital in ensuring the community has access to both.

What may look easy to install on home renovation shows or YouTube, requires a lot of skill and technical knowledge in understanding how plumbing systems should be installed and maintained.

Plumbing is an important service that we take for granted everyday.

water in toilet bowl

The thing is we need more plumbers and we need more plumbing apprentices to ensure we have enough skilled tradespeople to service the future plumbing needs of the community.

Last year it was reported that there was a decline in apprenticeship sign ups and completions. While the decline covered a broad range of skills, it’s important to understand if we don’t have apprentices, we will have a severe lack in skilled trades for the future. It’s important to have skilled plumbers and apprentices, coming through the ranks, because without them, the quality of our plumbing systems and services will decline which can have catastrophic consequences to the health of our community.

World Plumbing Day 2017

World Plumbing Day is a day that recognises the important part plumbers play in the health and wellbeing of the community. While there seems to be a day to celebrate all sorts of initiatives throughout the year, World Plumbing Day raises awareness of how lucky we are to have access to clean water and sanitation, when many in the world don’t.

world plumbing day 2017

That’s why we should never take our health for granted, nor the plumbers that install and maintain plumbing services that play a part in assisting with a healthy society.

On Friday 10th March, the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland has teamed with Event Partners to celebrate World Plumbing Day 2017 with a breakfast at Hillstone, St Lucia.

The theme for this year’s breakfast is focused on learning from the past, protecting the present and progressing the future. The Honourable Cameron Dick, Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services will attend the breakfast and speak about the importance of health and wellbeing of our community.

This year’s breakfast will have a focus on apprentices and many will be invited to the breakfast so they are encouraged to continue the course, with an importance of driving them towards developing and maintaining professionalism within the industry.

Apprentices can often be seen as the bottom of the food chain when it comes to skilled services, but they play an important part in our future. Without men and women putting their hand up to be trained, we wouldn’t have the skilled tradies needed to main our plumbing systems which provide much needed sanitation and fresh drinking water.

The breakfast will include an exciting announcement, with my role as Female Plumbing Ambassador being passed on to another female plumber within the industry. The presentation of the new Female Plumbing Ambassador for 2017 will be announced at the breakfast. The focus of the ambassadorship for 2017 will be to encourage diversity and inspire more women to take up an apprenticeship.

female plumbing ambassador for 2016

While it’s important to celebrate World Plumbing Day and recognise the new Female Plumbing Ambassador, the MPAQ believe in giving back to the community. There will be a raffle to raise money towards protecting the health and safety of the community through a nominated charity which will be confirmed closer to the date.

It can be easy to gloss over various initiatives and events throughout the year, but this year’s World Plumbing Day breakfast is one not to be missed. I encourage all plumbing companies, apprentices, trainers, suppliers and related trades to come along to the breakfast. Tickets can be purchased here.

When was the last time you were grateful for a plumber to fix an issue at your home? Have you ever visited a place with unsanitary services?

Semi-Recessed Freestanding Baths

0
semi-recessed freestanding bath

A freestanding bath has been a popular choice in bathroom design in the last few years. One of the benefits of installing a freestanding bath is it doesn’t require any carpentry work to have it fitted in. But one of the downfalls is it can be difficult to clean around the outside base if installed close to a window or wall. To combat this problem, many renovators are opting for a semi-recessed freestanding bath as they offer the look of a freestanding bath, with the practicality of being able to clean the outside and offer extra storage.

Caroma Bathrooms
Photo by CaromaLook for modern bathroom pictures – the space between the bath and window can be difficult to keep clean.

Basins are most commonly known to be semi-recessed into vanities, but it’s predicted more designers and renovators will choose to install a semi-recessed freestanding bath. It allows the best of both worlds – front on it offers the look of a free-standing bath, but the built in section takes away the frustration of cleaning a tight area, while also providing extra surface for storage.

Here are some design ideas for semi-recessed freestanding baths.

This free-standing bath had a shelf built behind it to give it the semi-recessed look. The shelf offers space for styling and a mount for the mixer.

Parade of Homes- Bath

This free-standing bath in Collingwood, Melbourne, was built into an engineered quartz for easy cleaning. The semi-recess offers a good amount of storage behind the bath as well.

Oxford Street, Collingwood

Here is another semi-recessed bath look which may appeal. It’s important to consider the materials that surround your bath to ensure they won’t deteriorate from potential water damage.

Redwoods
River Residence

The semi-recessed freestanding bath is said to become a popular trend for bathrooms in 2017. Tap placement needs to be considered with this type of bath installation as the floor standing spout and mixer won’t work.  Opt for wall mounted or hob mounted tap mixers instead.

What do you think of the semi-recessed freestanding bath look? Do you prefer it than a freestanding bath on it’s own?

Tradie’s Lunchbox – Pearl CousCous Salad

2
tradies lunchbox pearl couscous

This week for Tradie’s Lunchbox I have another salad recipe that is delicious, healthy and can be changed to suit your tastes.

We hosted friends over for lunch on Sunday and I served this salad which went down a treat. I love a colourful salad and I definitely love adding herbs to my dishes.

tradie's lunchbox pearl couscous salad

After serving the salad in a large bowl for guests to help themselves at lunch, there was still enough for me to eat for most of the week when I portioned it out.

My favourite salads are those that include great flavours and feta. My favourite is Danish feta because of it’s smooth taste.

Pearl Couscous can be found in the pasta aisle. I’ve posted a picture of the packet in the ingredients picture so you can see what it looks like. (last week I was asked where to get bucatini pasta from.) Boil in salted water for 10 minutes, drain and rinse with cool water. You then add your ingredients and you’re pretty much good to go.

tradie's lunchbox pearl cous cous salad

While I’m no nutritionist, I’m always learning how to eat better from a good friend who has studied in this area and is very generous with her knowledge. She encourages me to eat my carbs as early in the day as possible.

pearl couscous salad

I usually eat lunch around mid-morning because my body is still used to eating smoko at around 10am.

tradie's lunchbox pearl couscous salad

I find when I eat carbs at lunch I feel fuller and I don’t snack as much in the afternoon. This Pearl Couscous Salad is not only delicious, but quite versatile. The ingredients can be changed to suit your tastes.

Protein ideas that would work well with this salad are tuna, hard boiled eggs, roast chicken, roast beef, roast lamb and even chorizo.

If you are going to portion out the salad for the week, you may add more balsamic vinegar.

How to Pay For an Unexpected Household Expense PLUS a Giveaway

27
unexpected household expense

This post has been written in collaboration with People’s Choice Credit Union

It was on a fairly cold winter’s morning in August when I went to put our ducted heat on to warm the house. I pressed the button and it wouldn’t turn on.

I remember groaning inside as we had spent quite a bit of money on our reverse cycle air conditioning unit over the past few years.

We shivered and put on layers of clothes until the AC serviceman came to visit. Thankfully they weren’t too busy as summer is usually their peak season for calls.

I knew it was going to be expensive to fix. Last time the bill was around $900 to replace the motherboard as a rat decided to fry itself while looking for a warm place to hide.

The news wasn’t good.

I was told our unit had run out of gas (which would cost approx. $1200 to replace) and there was a gas leak.

old air con unit
Our old Air Con unit

Depending on where the leak was on the inner copper coil, would depend on whether the unit could be fixed or not.

Our serviceman was the bearer of bad news again when he found the leak was further inside the unit which meant a new coil would have to be installed. The cost of getting the parts and labour, plus filling it back up with gas was going to be hefty. I had to seriously consider purchasing a whole new ducted air conditioning system to avoid throwing more money at our number one problem. I knew the estimated cost was around $15,000 to supply and install a new unit.

I told our serviceman to send through two quotes. One to fix our current unit and another to replace the system fully.

The quote to fix was $4,000 and the cost to replace was $12,000.

Jacob and I had to weigh up whether to spend more money to get a new system or just get the system fixed – not knowing whether it would belly up 12 months later.

We decided we would replace the system and I went about getting more quotes from other AC installers.

We were able to get the price down to $9000, which was still an unexpected household expense and was certainly a large amount of money we didn’t have lying around.

I knew air conditioning would be a necessity in summer. The hot sun beats down the back of our house and the girls’ rooms COOK in summer, even with block out sun blinds. I’m also used to sleeping in air conditioning during summer. It prevents me from getting migraines.

When faced with a large, unexpected expense, it can be a source of worry, working out how to pay for it.

For us, we had to consider our options. They were either applying for a personal loan OR seeing if we could redraw money from our mortgage.

Personal loans can sometimes be looked down on as another debt to pay off or a debt you can’t afford, which does hold some merit, but gosh they are convenient when you need a large sum of money to pay for a huge expense, like replacing a ducted air conditioning unit.

People’s Choice Credit Union is one of Australia’s leading credit unions, with competitive rates. They offer a genuine alternative to the major banks.

People’s Choice makes it easy for families to work out whether they can maintain the loan, through the use of an online calculator on their website. The personal loan calculator calculates repayments and the affordability of the loan for families.

People’s Choice offers a range of personal loans to suit your circumstances. Whether you are purchase a new car, need funding for a renovation (or in my case, replacing the ducted air conditioning).

Their loans have a competitive interest rate and have the choice of weekly, fortnightly or monthly repayments.

Personal loans make it easier to achieve your life goals quicker. They also give you the power to access necessary funds to pay for unexpected financial surprises.

And no one is immune from them in some shape or form.

If you’re after a delicious and filling lunch idea, this Asian Pasta Salad is one to make and keep in the fridge or take to work in an Esky.

This Asian pasta salad is one I like to make when it’s a busy week and need something quick to eat for lunch. It can make a few servings for the week and can be portioned with a protein for a delicious and filling lunch or dinner.

When I worked on the tools, my lunch was bought every day. It was expensive and if I’m honest, I didn’t always make the best nutritional choices. But I would defend my bad food choices by acknowledging how hard I had worked on site and I figured I would have already burned the calories anyway!

Earlier this year, I saw on a tradies forum that there were requests for lunch inspiration when onsite. I created a new series on the blog, Tradie’s Lunchbox and Smoko Snacks.

I enjoy sharing recipes on other blogs, so having a few on my blog here allows me to share recipes I love to make. While the lunches aren’t necessarily for tradies, then intent is to share recipes which can travel with you to work.

Having worked on various constructions sites, I know that there aren’t always fridges or cooking facilities onsite, so I will keep this in mind when I share my recipes.

My Asian Pasta Salad is easy to make. And oh my word, this is DELICIOUS! The great thing about this recipe is it can be made at the beginning of the week and portioned into containers for each day. The flavours develop when in rests in the fridge after being made, so by Wednesday, I can guarantee you will have a flavor hit.

I had this for lunch most days last week and added tuna for protein. It was so good.

When Life Explodes From One End to The Other

When life explodes from one end to the other

Last Friday (the week before last) I was exhausted because I had been up all night with Esther as she battled through gastro. A home doctor visit at 3:45am ensured she was given something to stop her chucking up and gave me time to fall asleep on the mattress, which I had set up on the floor in her room when the vomiting started. At 5am she was wide awake and wanted to rest on the couch.

I headed back to my own bed. Hoping no one else in the family would get it.

Sunday rolled around and no one had got it. #dodgedabullet

But Monday morning, Phoebe woke up and had spewed in her cot and Maggie did a spew, but only out of sympathy.

Soon after I was sitting on the toilet and heaving into a bucket. Sadly I got hit the worst with it.

Whatever strain of gastro bug going around, it is hideous. I lost 3kg and it’s taken me all week to slowly get my bearings. I was constantly having dizzy spells and if I stood too quickly I felt like I would black out.

I had a good friend (who’s a GP) take my blood pressure when sitting down and standing up and it confirmed I was still quite dehydrated. I’ve been drinking hydralyte, coca-cola and berocca to get essential nutrients back into me. Unfortunately it means I have now only lost 2 kgs.

In amongst the chaos of gastro explosions, last week was a good week.

Phoebe had her first day at Daycare and LOVED it. Even the carers were surprised at how well she settled in on her first day.

Having one day at home by myself is going to be amazingly helpful in giving me time to get my paid work done. Unfortunately on Phoebe’s first day of care, I was getting over being sick. Not a lot of work happened that day, but what a blessing I could have a day at home to recoup and recover.

I’ve also had a good stream of emails for more paid writing work which is great. There have been draft posts that have had tight deadlines, which I was able to do this week, despite being sick. Ironically, deadlines in the writing world and plumbing world are identical. Everyone wants something done fairly quickly, and it can’t always be achievable. But last week I was able to though. Go me.

While I relaxed to get better, I spent a lot of time on my phone, scrolling through social media. And nearly every second or third post would be about Donald Trump. I think it’s a crazy state of affairs that he’s President. I hope he does bring good and govern wisely. But I’m not sure that’s what we’re seeing in these early days. It’s a little frightening.

Yet while it’s been a bit crazy in my own world and the world at a greater scale, life continues to go on.

This week I have been grateful for my health. Thankful for doctors who come and do home visits and a husband who has immunity as strong as an ox and was able to take over looking after the house and kids (when he could) so I could get better. How do single parents cope when they get hit with gastro? It was a thought I had while throwing up.

In other news, I was mighty impressed with three young guys from Lynx Couriers.

I dropped Jacob off to work on Thursday and a man was pushing (what I assume) was his female partner,  yelling at her out the front of the Child Services building. While I got out of the car to swap to the driver’s side, I wasn’t sure whether to walk up and make sure the woman was ok. I looked behind me and a Lynx Couriers Delivery Truck had stopped and all three delivery guys went up to the domestic, asking if all was ok and wanting to diffuse the situation. I love seeing humans stand up for what is right.

Later that day when I picked Jacob up from work, he told me that the delivery truck hadn’t meant to stop at Jacob’s work and weren’t delivering anything to the office. They just saw the violence and drove into the carpark so they could help out.

It’s not always the case for some situations though. You have to put your own safety first depending on what is going on. Domestic violence in public is heart racing to watch and so eye-opening. If they don’t care about being violent in public, what happens when they’re at home?

Thank you for your kind comments on Facebook and Instagram about my health. Please ensure you don’t get it. Even if you want to lose the Christmas kilos. Gastro is not the way to do it.

Here’s to hoping we don’t get hit with any more nasty bugs this year.

How has this year been for you? How do you feel about what is going on in America?

Open Shelf Vanity Units – Bathroom Trend 2017

Open Shelf Vanity Units – Bathroom Trend 2017

The minimalist movement is set to infiltrate interiors as people embrace the simpler lifestyle of living with less. One area of the house that the minimalist movement is probably the easiest to embrace is in the bathroom. Open shelf vanity units are the quickest way to jump on board with this trend.

Many renovators are opting for a sleeker, open shelf style vanity as opposed to the bulkier vanities seen in the past. Wall hung vanities or floating vanities are a popular choice as they create an illusion of space in the bathroom.

Choosing the right vanity is important not necessarily for what is on trend, but what suits your lifestyle.

While a plank of wood topped with some vessel basins may look incredibly chic, it’s impractical for a family bathroom where the volume of toiletries are at a maximum as it’s the bathroom that is used most often.

Opt for a longer vanity with slimmer drawers or cabinets, should the space allow it, for more storage. But if you truly want to embrace this trend in all bathroom areas, here are some tips you need to know.

What You Need to Know About Open Shelf Vanity Units

1. Be mindful that open shelf vanities are a target for young children to rearrange and empty.

contemporary bathroom ideas

2. Consider alternate storage solutions for bath and beauty products. There are a number of ways to add storage to the bathroom though the integration of concealed cabinets behind mirrors or a wall cavity that can shelve products. Even baskets slid underneath can act as extra storage, while adding texture and colour to your bathroom.

Minimal Modern Spa Bathroom

3. A bottle trap will need to be used for most open shelved vanities. It’s important for the plumber to know measurements of the vanity, height for installation and whether a bottle trap is to be installed because these measurements will been needed for the rough in.

Contemporary Bathroom

4. Timber vanities do require ongoing care to keep them looking their best. Make sure the slab of timber has enough surface area if there is limited storage.

5. The open shelves will collect dust so be prepared to dust as needed.

Why Plumbers Should Know Interior Trends

why plumbers should know interior trends

Why Plumbers Should Know Interior Trends

Starting this week I’m going to give a weekly post about interior trends and styles for all areas of the home that relate to plumbing.

While most residential clients have a firm idea of what they want, and commercial jobs always have specifications, there are some jobs that call for design and construct advice. And in these projects, a plumber can help a client make the best choices when it comes to their design and fixture selections. That’s why plumbers should know interior trends.

The builder and architect can usually help with the materials and design choices, but the plumber can give advice on plumbing and fixtures to ensure the space looks modern and suits the aesthetic of the property. Often the client is happy for whatever works within their budget, but a clever plumber will be able to offer on-trend solutions to meet the client’s price. It’s a key trait of a good plumber who will get continual work.

why plumbers should know interior trends pin

So how can plumbers learn about interior trends?

There are five ways plumbers can become interior savvy, and it doesn’t have to take up too much time for research.

1. Being on the job. Plumbers are always on different jobs, working with different materials and usually they’re the last trade to fit off a renovation. Take a note of the colour combinations to the shape of the taps and the size of the vanity. Make a note of what’s popular and what’s not. Use your experience to tell clients and builders in the future what worked well and what to be wary of. There is one certain brand of plumbing fixtures in Brisbane that both my dad and I will never recommend even though they look good and are budget-friendly. They are a pain in the butt to install and service. This type of information is
important to relay to a potential client when a quotation is asked for.

Windsor

2. Read online home interior blogs and websites. Some of my favourite blogs/websites to check out are the Complete Home, Houzz, The Builder’s Wife, Interiors Addict, The Life Creative and DIY Decorator. Houzz is often my go-to website for inspiration.

Brunswick Home - Ensuite Bathroom 2015

3. Follow Instagram accounts by plumbing suppliers like Reece Bathrooms, Caroma, Dorf Australia and Candana. Don’t be afraid to follow other plumbers or builders (I love Smith & Sons QLD and Three Birds Renovations on Instagram to see what they’ve installed.) We can always learn from each other when keeping up with trends.

Essendon Traditional Kitchen

4. Pinterest and Google Images can bring up images and examples of work if a client is after a particular look, but is unable to articulate what they are after.

plumbette pinterest

5. Check out interior magazines like Inside Out, Real Living, Better Homes & Gardens and Queensland Homes. These can be great resources to have in the ute or the office. Or placed in the loo when doing a number two…

Quaker Bluff Residence

Architects and interior designers are often ahead of the game when it comes to what is on trend with interiors, but tradies can offer practical advice of how to pull off the trend so it meets the by-laws and works for the space. Never be afraid to offer advice as a tradie, even if it’s ignored. Your opinion is valid as you’re the one who does the installation and you’re the one that has to go back for maintenance. (if you’re the client, make a note of what you’re tradie advises).

Trends in interiors can change just like the seasons and often what’s in right now, will be out a year later. But knowing what is popular at the time will give you a competitive edge with your business.

Get ahead of you game and learn about the predicted bathroom trends for 2017 and kitchen trends for 2017.

What are your favourite interior trends at the moment? What trend would you like to see disappear?

Australian Animal Cupcakes For Australia Day

3
australian animal cupcakes

If you’re looking for a fun baking activity to do with the kids, that celebrates Australia, these Australian Animal Cupcakes are not only a treat, but A LOT of fun to make with the kids.

You know you’re in the full swing of the year when school starts and the Australia Day public holiday comes up.

Usually the public holiday is spent with friends and out of the heat. Today was a stinker so I’m expecting similar weather for tomorrow.

But even though it was hot outside today, we had the air con on inside and the girls and I got our baking on to make these Australian Animal Cupcakes for Australia Day.

We’re heading to the Pub tomorrow with friends so I’m not sure when these guys will get eaten, but it was a fun activity all the same for my two youngest girls to do.

If you’re looking for a sugar-free treat, this is not it. The last time I shared cupcakes on Instagram I got told I was killing my kids for feeding them sugar. It was water off this platypus’ back.

Of course you can make your cupcakes from scratch. I always head to Create Bake Make or Bake Play Smile for a baking recipe. Today, I opted for the easy packet mix option.

Echidna Cupcakes

To make these echidna cupcakes, I melted some of the white choc chips and dipped the TeeVee chocolate sticks in to make textured spikes for the echidna. Set these in the fridge.

Ice your cupcake like normal and layer the chocolate sticks evenly, alternating between white chocolate and plain. Add two white choc chips for eyes and cut one chocolate stick in half for the mouth. You can poke the stick biscuits into the cupcake, by I liked the spread out option.

Platypus Cupcakes

You will need two Honey Jumble biscuits. Cut the pink biscuit in half and stuff it into the top of the front of the cupcake. Poke a white biscuit for the tail and add two chocolate chips for eyes.

Koala Cupcakes

Ice your cupcake like so and sprinkle desiccated coconut over the top of the icing. Cut a pink marshmallow in half and place them on either side of the cupcake for ears. Place a chocolate covered almond in the middle for the nose and two chocolate chips for the eyes.

When put together, you can’t get much more Australian than these cupcakes. It definitely looks like Australia on a plate when served together.

5 Ways to Use Timber in an Outdoor Area

2
5 ways to use timber in outdoor area

This post has been written in collaboration with Thomsons Outdoor Pine

When Jacob and I were looking at houses, we wanted a built in outdoor entertaining area. It didn’t have to be big, but it had to be large enough to entertain guests outside.

Outdoor areas have become a mandatory space for Australian homes in the last decade or so. People like to dine outdoors or have the option of extra space to allow for indoor/outdoor entertaining.

Any outdoor area can be styled enough to create a welcoming atmosphere; and the best way for the outdoor area to have a homely feel is through the use of timber.

Timber is a popular material used in outdoor areas because it looks good, it’s durable and practical to install.

It’s important to consider the correct type of timber when deciding which one to use for a certain area. Thomsons Outdoor Pine are the experts when installing timber in outdoor areas. Their team can offer advice on the best design for your property. They also have the right team of tradespeople to conduct the installation.

If you’re planning to use timber in your outdoor area, here are 5 applications you may want to consider.

5 Ways to Use Timber in an Outdoor Area

Timber Deck

Timber decks are by far the most popular application of timber in outdoor areas. Their natural aesthetic can add value to your property, while offering a stunning and durable floor surface for outdoor entertaining.

Pergola

A pergola is an erected structure that can provide your outdoor area shelter from the weather or shade from the sun. There are a lot of considerations when choosing a timber pergola. You have to decide on the pergola’s use which also determines whether its roof should be covered or open and pitched or flat. A timber pergola can make all the difference to the appearance of your outdoor living space.

Cladding

Cladding can hide an ugly wall, while providing a natural setting to your outdoor area. Timber cladding can enhance the feel of the outdoor area as it offers a timeless look which extends itself to the natural elements.

Timber cladding can also be used to create a feature wall and you’re not limited on design as it can be installed vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Timber cladding is timeless in its appeal and adds resale value to your home.

Privacy Screen

Privacy screens are a must for outdoor areas as they can shield unwanted peeps from the neighbours, while also blocking noise and even the sun if positioned in the right spot. A timber privacy screen can add a ‘hideaway’ feel while creating a lavish haven to the outdoor area. The most popular choice is a horizontal design, however, vertical installations can look stunning and shield just as well.

Handrails & Balustrades

If your outdoor area is elevated, handrails and balustrades are a must for safety. But just because they’re mandatory, doesn’t mean they need to look ugly. Timber handrails and balustrades can break up an outdoor area by offering a modern look while blending in with the outdoors, naturally. The handrails can be chosen to coordinate with the style of your home and to match the existing décor. Stainless steel wires have a wide appeal as they are sleek, contemporary and offer an unblocked view of the outdoors.

Choosing the right timber feature can make your outdoor area a stunning spot to retreat to. The right timber structure and installation will ensure you’re making the most out of your outdoor space.

Are you a fan of timber in outdoor areas? Which is your favourite application?

Partners in Construction – How to Look Stylish When You Work From Home

how to look stylish when you work from home

How to look stylish when you work from home

Last year at the Partners in Plumbing event for Melbourne Cup, I was asked to share some fashion tips with the ladies who support their husbands or partners in their plumbing business.

I did say I was going to put in a post to share what I said that day, so here it is.

When I worked in our family plumbing business, I not only worked on the tools, I helped with the administration of the business. When I first starting working for my dad he said Friday’s were our slower day to catch up on paperwork. This wasn’t a known thing to our plumbers, but it was very much a needed day to ease into the weekend after a crazy, full on week of work.

On Fridays I would head into the office and make up job folders, catch up on emails, get prices in on specs, source the suppliers of unusual specs, file away completed job folders, print off plans, send invoices, bank cheques, pick up the mail and the list goes on. Despite Friday being a ‘slower’ day it wasn’t necessarily an unproductive day.

On those Fridays it would be important for me to wear clothes that looked stylish and that I’d be happy to go out with friends and have a coffee in. It wasn’t a day for me to wear trackies.

I found when I put effort into my outfits on Friday, I got things done like a boss. So I know how important dressing well is not only for your confidence, but also your motivation.

work from home clothes quote

I wouldn’t necessarily wear business wear on Fridays, but it would definitely be smart-casual with a slight business tant so I felt a little professional. I chose to wear clothes that suited my shape and style. My style has changed over the years, even more so now as a mum.

For wives who work with their husband in their trade related business, here are my tips on how to look your best each day working in the home office.

1. Find your shape. The basics of knowing what clothes suit you so you look your best, requires you to know your shape. There are some clothing items that suit you better than others. Knowing your shape helps you with your online shopping purchases. It makes shopping a breeze because you usually know which clothing items will or won’s suit you. Having said that, never say never to an item that you love, but may not suit your shape when looking at it on the rack or online. Try it on and see.

There are 5 shapes that are common amongst women. For fun I’ve used plumbing fittings to explain which shapes are most common.

plumbing fittings that define your shape

Toilet Seat = Apple Shape
Pipe Reducer = Pear Shape
Upright Plunger = Heavy on the top
Pipe = Athletic/straight up and down
Compression Union = Hourglass shape

Once you know your shape, learn what clothes suit it.

2. Define your style. What kind of clothes do you enjoy wearing? Do you like classics, or a bit of bohemian/hippy style? Do you like to wear more neutrals or bright colours? Finding the style of clothes you enjoy can be done through scanning magazines, Pinterest, Instagram and following fashion bloggers who may be a similar shape to you. Make a note of the outfits you like and imitate them. My blogging friend Em Hawker does this on Instagram. If you are pressed for time and don’t want research, hire a personal stylist to help you define your style.

Here are my list of fashion bloggers to help define your style

Women aged 30+ (will still appeal to those under 30) – Pretty Chuffed, Sonia Styling, Flat Bum Mum, Styled by Bec, iCurvy, Suger Coat It

Women aged 40+ – Iris May Style, Styling You, Kimba Likes, Styling Curvy, Kirsten & Co, Redcliffe Style

3. Create a capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe helps you because it gives you less choice and less overwhelm on what to wear. This is why uniforms can be a blessing in disguise because if you’re super busy (as most wives are juggling work, kids, household chores, social activities for them and the family!), wearing a uniform is one less decision to make during the day. Nikki from Styling You has put a great working from home capsule wardrobe together. For wives who go out to sites, I would include more pants and one pair of steel cap boots/joggers for safety.

1. Katies Cold Shoulder Top $49.95, 2. Fate Loryn Blouse $89.95, 3.Bohemian Traders Scoop Neck Tee in Black and White Stripe $59, 4. Handpicked by Birds Pocket Shorts $79.95, 5. Katies Black Cargo Pants $49.95, 6. Bohemian Traders A-Line Denim Skirt $149

4. Forget the label and brand when buying clothes. Don’t be afraid to mix budget with quality. You want the clothes to fit you nicely. Ill-fitting clothes never look great.

5. Comfort is key. If the off the shoulder trend annoys you when you’re typing at your desk, don’t wear it to work. Opt for a cold shoulder instead. If you have to get from the computer to help your kids or do some photocopying, those high heels may not be a wise choice. Opt for wedges or flat sandals. Make sure the clothes you choose are comfortable and won’t annoy you while you work.

work from home clothes
1. Surafina Epson Shirt Dress $74.99, 2. Bohemian Traders Scoop Neck Tee Dress $129

6. Spend time putting your face on in the morning. I usually have 5 minutes to make my face look more presentable. I use a BB cream, a slick of mascara and a lip balm to keep my lips well hydrated. To save more time in the morning, have your eyelashes tinted.

7. Plan your outfits for the week. If you have days where you have to visit sites or do deliveries or go to meetings, wear clothes that will allow you to feel confident when doing these out-of-home errands.

8. Don’t forget accessories. These can make a boring outfit go a long way. I rarely wore bangles because they would hinder my ability to type, but earrings, rings and necklaces would add some interest to my outfits.

accessories for home
1. Adrift Tassel Earrings $44.95, 2. Ruby Olive Wonderland Flat Disc Necklace $45, 3. Tony Bianco Convoy Handbag in Sand $77.95, 4. Comptec Women’s Safety Jogger $109.95 5. Omni Black Leather Sandal $118.97 6. Top End Rome Tan Black Wedges $169.95

9. Prevent bad hair days by styling hair the night before. I usually straighten my hair the night before so I need to do very little when I get up in the morning. This tip may or may not work for you depending on your hair type.

10. Have fun with your style. Working from home doesn’t mean you have to dress boringly. Wear colour and accessories and put your own twist on an outfit you’ve seen worn by your favourite blogger.

Do you work from home? Do you find your motivation increases when you put effort into your outfit?

And So We Start Another School and Kindy Year

And So We Start Another School and Kindy Year

How fast did those six weeks of school holidays roll around? Admittedly, last week I was ready for my girls to go somewhere because the fighting and screaming was doing my head in. Having one child at home was looking much more appealing than having all three home. I think my girls were looking forward to a new change this week anyway because you do fun stuff at school and Kindy anyway.

This year I have two drop offs and I have to manage my timing well because of course the start times and finish times are the same. Thank goodness for my school mum friends who will be able to help out if I get stuck.

The day started with Esther getting up early (5am) excited about getting ready for school and tackling her morning jobs. A new chore chart has been put on the fridge and I’m hoping it will motivate my girls to get themselves ready and to clean their mess while I negotiate breakfast, lunches and school bags. It worked today.

Despite Phoebe not going anywhere today, she had to look the part and so we packed her a lunch and gave her a bag to carry. She was more than happy to pose for the photos.

Phoebe

maggie

Talking about lunchboxes… ugh. Jacob usually packs these for me while I do work, but this morning I wanted to do them for their first day back. Maggie was adamant she would NOT eat the grapes or cheese and to please pack crackers, yoghurt, strawberries and a Vegemite ‘Samwich’.

Esther was less fussy but now hates strawberries because she ate them every day last year.

Phoebe didn’t care what she had packed, just so long as she had a lunchbox like her sisters.

We pack the girls lunches in Bento style lunchboxes because they like to eat a selection of different foods and I find the compartments easy to fill. The segregated sections also stop dry biscuits getting soggy from the condensation from their fruit.

The first drop off was for Esther. If she was nervous, she didn’t show it. I think she was happy to find her desk and get on with the day.

Next was Maggie and I was excited to see her excited about being dropped off. There were no emotions from me or from Maggie when we followed the somewhat familiar routine of signing her in.

Maggie with Daddy

Maggie with Mummy

After her full day of Kindy she proudly showed me her first painting, her empty lunchbox and was eager to tell me how she loved EVERYTHING about Kindy. She also told me about her first disaster: Her ice-pack in her insulated lunch bag had burst pouring ‘booger water’ everywhere. Jacob and I couldn’t stop laughing at her description of the leak.

Phoebe constantly asked where Maggie was throughout the day which made me smile because I remember Maggie doing the exact same thing when Esther went to Kindy. It’s such a new experience being the only child home and not having a sibling home to play with.

But as soon as we got home, Phoebe jumped on the couch and asked to watch ‘Ickle Pickle please’, happy to have the TV and Netflix to herself.

As a mum to young children, you often dream about the day they go to school and kindy, and when it finally comes you can feel emotional about the new season. It really does come around fast, but rather than feel sad  I’m excited about what this year holds for all of our girls. We are so ready for new learning and new experiences. The baby years are well and truly behind us. I’m grateful for them, but certainly happy to have them behind me.

school time

Now all that’s left is to toilet train Phoebe and transfer her from a cot to a bed. Wish me luck on those fronts.

How did your kids go at school today? When do your kids go back to school? Are you excited about this new season?

We Are The Decisions We Make

We are the Decisions We Make

Last week at church I heard one of the best sermons. To be honest, I hear an awesome sermon each week. But last Sunday was the perfect message to start the year on and ironically was the encouragement I needed to prepare for what has been an unusually unsettling week.

One of the best things about going to a global church is the amazing speakers and preachers that speak truth and wisdom into our lives. Jacob and I feel incredibly blessed each week to walk into church, knowing we will be challenged and encouraged with something new that can be applied to our lives.

The message was about using what we have in our hands to see dreams and goals become fulfilled. To not be complacent with what we have in our hands. The truth is we often have way more going for us than we think, but we often focus on our lack, rather than what we have to work with.

Since that message was preached, this week has been a mix of highs and lows.

Some of the highs I experienced in no particular order,

  • This was my second week of exercising every day. I’m proud to have stuck with my new habit and intention for 2017.
  • It was also the last week of school holidays so there has been a lot of tantrums from cranky kids. There was a Kindy orientation for Maggie and new school uniforms bought for Esther because she somehow got permanent black marker on BOTH of her school dresses last year. Both girls are excited about starting back next week.
  • I’ve caught up with friends, had a date night at home with Jacob because the kids had a sleepover at their grandparents and last night I did my first art workshop with school mums who are becoming some of my closest friends.

So while it’s been a week of preparing for new beginnings and enjoying time spent with others…

I’ve also been the ears to family and friends as they’ve shared their burdens and some painful issues that will make 2017 a challenging year for their family.

I’ve grieved for a friendship lost. I’ve had wonderful friends speak into my life as I’ve shared the hurt and confusion of being misunderstood and then blocked by someone I considered a friend. It’s an awful feeling, but I’ve had to accept that the issue is not mine to lose sleep on.

And then we finished the working week with the tragedy in Melbourne with innocent bystanders being killed, and the newly sworn in Trump for American President. The world is a crazy place to live and sadly, these events show that the decisions of others can greatly impact our lives.

No matter the circumstances we find ourselves in, we have a choice to make the best out of our situation. The alternative is to slump down in misery and make rash decisions that can make our lives worse.

The sermon on Sunday was the perfect way to start the week because no matter what life throws our way, we can decide to use that challenge for good to reevaluate our priorities and strengthen our resolve to move beyond what has been sent our way.

While the decisions of others can affect us, we are the decisions we make and if we want to see parts of our lives flourish, we have to decide on working with what we have at our disposal. Even when we have terrible things happen to us, through no fault of our own.

God wants to see each of us flourish with the gifts and blessings we’ve been entrusted. But it’s our decision to pursue Him. In our pursuit, He gives us wisdom to overcome the challenges that sin has brought into this world.

One key area that I think we should all put priority on this year is the investment of our family. We need to protect the family unit and the best way to do this is to invest in our marriage. Strong marriages flow into strong families. The partnership between mum and dad is so important because it’s the bond that starts a family, yet when it’s broken it can tear a family apart.

we are the decisions we make pic

If we chose not to work on our relationships, we will see them dissolve. Our decision to do something or not, will reflect on the outcome.

So whatever has been thrown your way this year or whatever challenges you faced last year that are affecting your 2017, be wise in making decisions that will see a peaceful and positive outcome. Seek Godly wisdom to know how to make the best decisions. No matter what hand we’ve been dealt in life, we are capable of turning it around for good, but it all comes down to the decisions we make.

Ephesians 6:10-18 (parts paraphrased) The Message “God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way.”

“Be prepared. You’re up against more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s over, but the shouting, you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. “

How has your 2017 been so far? Looking forward to school starting next week?

My Time at Cork and Chroma – A Paint and Sip Class in Brisbane

My Experience at a Paint and Sip Class in Brisbane

The first time I learned that art was in the eye of the beholder was when I was in year 8. I was in my least favourite class at school – art class.

I had handed in an assignment that I wasn’t particularly proud of but I knew it fit the brief.

I nearly fell backwards on my chair when I got my assignment back with an A+!

Umm… what?!

I remember telling my mum I had got an A+ in art because I handed in a bit of crap. That bit of crap was a collage. Anything remotely arty like drawing or painting, I wasn’t very good at.

So when one of my friends suggested going to a paint and sip class in Brisbane, I was kind of intrigued. Even if I couldn’t paint, I knew I wanted to hang out with my friends. Plus I could add it to my bucket list of new activities done for the year.

As soon as I walked into the studio, I felt a little overwhelmed. There were tables set up with easels, brushes and palettes. There was a David Bowie picture that looked so good and I thought, “I can’t paint that!”

Well I did.

plumbette at cork and chroma

The whole class did.

And it was fascinating to see the different colour choices and designs others in the room choose to paint their picture.

cork and chroma paint and sip class

The painting session was held at Cork & Chroma. It’s a studio in West End where a teacher offers basic techniques painting with acrylics on a canvas. The teacher gives step-by-step instructions and you are free to creatively do what you choose with your painting. It’s encouraged to bring your own drinks so you can ‘sip’ while you paint. The tutorial was easy even for a non-artist like me. And the music was loud and fun.

I have to say I’m pretty happy with my masterpiece. Although I do need to practice my contouring. My Ziggy Stardust looks like he’s got a nasty neck rash. And one shoulder is longer than the other.

Bec with Bowie Cork and Chroma

Cork and Chroma offer all sorts of creative nights which book out fast. Our class was $55 and included all the materials. Most of the classes range in prices from $44 to $65.

The sip and paint sessions are a great way to hang out with friends, while doing something fun. They can also make for great private functions or celebrations.

Cork and Chroma have studios in Brisbane and Sydney. Check out the website to see which class you might like to go to.

I definitely would like to go again. The paint your mate Picasso style looks heaps of fun. Could make for a great date night for Valentine’s Day.

If you want to book in for a class, grab a group of friends to make a booking. You will walk away with an awesome piece of art and a fabulous night making memories with your friends.

Can you paint? Are you artistic? Ever heard of a paint and sip class? What do you think of my Bowie? Would you buy him?

This post has been written in collaboration with UncommonGoods

We may have just celebrated Christmas, but the gift of giving doesn’t stop at the end of the year.

Already, I’ve been to two Birthday parties and it’s not even the end of January yet!

All throughout the year, there are always opportunities to give gifts.

I think it’s harder to give gifts in this era than in the past because people buy what they want and what they need nowadays. And this makes it difficult when you need to buy a gift for a recipient.

In recent years, I’ve often bought practical gifts. A new pair of slippers for my dad. Pyjamas for my husband, hand wash and cream for my mum.

But sometimes I want to give a gift that is more personal and supports a smaller business or artist.

UncommonGoods is an online shop that offers all that and more.

The mission of UncommonGoods is to offer gifts and products that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. The assortment of gifts available are created by artists and small manufacturers who are socially and environmentally aware. Many of the products are handmade, recycled or organic.

UncommonGoods ship to Australia, offering low international shipping rates.

They are a site to consider when shopping for milestone celebrations and birthdays.

UncommonGoods also offer a great selection of gifts for wedding anniversaries. I always struggle with this milestone myself.

Even the plumber who has everything will appreciate a gift from UncommonGoods. Here are some gift ideas with a plumbing skew I found on the site.

Where do you go when you have to buy a gift for that person who is hard to buy for?

What I’ve Been Reading – Three Books to Put on Your Reading List

1
reading for january 2017

One of my goals this year is to read more books. I love reading, but I haven’t had a lot of time to indulge in it since having my babies. Often the time between reads would require me to re-read what I’d read to remember the story, or I’d fall asleep, sometimes with the book on my chest. Often the books would pile up on my bedside, gathering dust because time is a battlefield.

I haven’t made a goal to read a number of books each month, but instead, I want to read 1 book from cover to cover and then start on my next read.

I thought I’d share some of the books I’ve read and what I think about them. I don’t have time to read bad books. I love a good storyline or a biography that compels me to keep reading. If I start reading a book and it doesn’t get better past the first few pages, I stop.  I’ve only had one of those this year.

Each month I will share what I’ve been reading because I’m sure you’re like me and have little time to waste reading a bad book… yeah?

Three Books to Put on Your Reading List – January

Destination Simple by Brooke McAlary $12.99

destination simple

I read this book in one sitting. The day I received it and put the girls down for their quiet time/nap, I got stuck in and I loved it. I had heard Brooke speak at Problogger Conference and her posts about living a simpler life appealed to me (Check out her blog and podcast Slow Your Home). Brooke was probably the first person to influence me to a minimalist and intentional lifestyle before it became a trend.

Brooke shares some basic rituals she has done to keep her life simple and to stop the overload of brain clutter which I find myself constantly in a state in. She shares easy tasks to help live a simpler life and living with intention. I need to re-read the book and work through each ritual. There is a lot of wisdom in this book and it’s easy to apply if I truly want to enjoy each moment of my life. This is a must read for anyone who wants to slow down and enjoy the simple things better.

Try Hard by Em Rusciano $24.99

Em Rusciano Reading 2017

This book appealed to me because of the title – Try Hard, tales from the life of a needy overachiever. What I enjoyed about this book is Em’s openness about her failures and her successes. I think we can look at people in the limelight and think it must have been easy for them to get their success, but what we don’t see is the pain of failure or crappy experiences that got them to that place. Em certainly doesn’t hold back from sharing parts of her private life, but her realness is refreshing and some of her stories are hysterical. I read this book within a couple of days. It’s definitely worth a read.

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty $14.99

what alice forgot book reading 2017

Jacob bought this book for me last year as a surprise gift. Thing was, the end of last year was so busy I didn’t have the time to read it. I’m a big fan of Liane Moriarty. Big Little Lies and The Husband’s Secret were possibly the only 2 books I managed to read all the way to the end last year (look there could have been more, but these left a good impression on me). I think What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty is my favourite book from the ones I’ve read by her. The story is about Alice who gets injured at a gym with a head injury and her memory reverts back to when she was 10 years younger, pregnant with her first born. She instantly loses 10 years of her life. Alice has to work out why her marriage has fallen apart, who her children are and who she has become in the space of those 10 years. I LOVED the ending and while the book is a piece of fiction, it really stirred up thoughts about how we change in life due to life circumstances or being weighed down by the busyness of life. The importance of keeping our values when things aren’t working were poignant reminders in this book. I also appreciated Alice’s grandma sharing her blogposts and seeing the comments under each post. It humoured me as a blogger myself. This book is a must read.

What books have you been reading lately? Got any recommendations for me?

Just Watch Her

31
just watch her poem the plumbette

Every new challenge has a rival. Every dream has a setback.

No matter how determined you are in achieving your goals this year, there will be something that will try to deter you to stop.

Don’t let it.

Change is never easy to put into action and it’s never easy to accept.

Not all dreams are smooth sailing to achieve.

But you have to dig deep, build yourself up and believe you can do what you’ve set out to do.

This year, I’d love to hear more success stories of women building a career in construction and the trades.

It’s not because I want women to dominate these industries, it’s simply because there are women who are wired to work with their hands, and sadly they’re being denied the opportunity to give their dream career a go.

There are many reasons why male dominant industries should have a balanced gender representation.

But there is still old thinking and chauvinistic attitudes that plague the industry.

If you’re a woman trying to be taken seriously in a male dominant job, I wrote this poem for you.

It was inspired by a poem written by a teenager that when read backwards, would have a different message to when it was read forwards.

I want to encourage you that no matter what you are facing, you have the skills and perseverance to get through.

life will test you quote
My hope for all of you is that 2017 won’t be a year free of challenge (because reality isn’t perfect), but a year where you are more determined and full of strength to prove your naysayers wrong.

Anyone who says women can’t be tradies need to be proven wrong.

And I hope you are the one that does it.

Just Watch Her

Just watch her
She can’t do this.
Don’t try to tell her
she could do it if only she was a male.
It’s a useless quest.
A woman shouldn’t be on the tools.
It’s not right to think,
She’ll be better –
She won’t be good.
Try to assure her
she’s capable of other pursuits.
It’s a common thought
Male dominated industries aren’t a place for women.
It’s foolish, thinking
she can possibly be
a tradie?!
Who does she think she is?
She is nothing.
She’s deluded to think
she can do it.

Now read it backwards and be encouraged that you can do this.

She can do it
She’s deluded to think
She is nothing.
Who does she think she is?
a tradie?!
She can possibly be.
It’s foolish, thinking
Male dominated industries aren’t a place for women.
It’s a common thought,
She’s capable of other pursuits.
Try to assure her,
She won’t be good –
she’ll be better.
It’s not right to think,
A woman shouldn’t be on the tools,
It’s a useless quest,
She could do it if she was a male.
Don’t try to tell her
she can’t do this.
Just watch her.

Bring on 2017. I wish you a year of overcoming challenges and a year of amazing results after much persistence and hard work.

Dig Deep and Build Yourself Up

2
dig deep and build yourself up the plumbette

Since dad and I stopped working together, we don’t get to see each other as much during the week. I’m often busy juggling the kids, their activities and fitting in my work, while dad is busy doing things he didn’t have time for when he ran his business. It’s not necessarily a bad outcome from stopping the business, it’s just how life has evolved for both of us.

So it was lovely to sit with dad as he drove me into the city to attend an end-of-year Christmas get-together with our old plumbing crew, the week before Christmas.

with the plumbers
A selfie with some of our plumbers, there’s me, my dad at the back, Lucky (yes he is called Lucky) who is now a building manager and Mark from MEJ Plumbing. All these guys have known me since I was little. They are brilliant plumbers. Call Mark if you want your bathroom renovated.

It was like old times, being in the truck and talking about life as we went from job to job. But this time we were heading to a Christmas party.

As dad drove me into the city, and the traffic crawled as we got onto the highway ( I don’t miss working in the city that’s for sure!), I admitted I didn’t feel like I was where I was meant to be. I have had this feeling for a while. In fact it’s a feeling I’m well acquainted with. But I’ve ignored it and just focused on being the ever-present mum and meeting my writing deadlines each week, while also building this blog.

My dad said, ‘I can tell you exactly where you need to be. You need to be doing what you’re doing now. No one can write like you and no one can talk like you. You’ve found your gift girl, you just have to dig deep and build it.’

dig deep quote
I smiled. Maybe dad was right. Maybe I had found where I needed to be.

I never expected being a plumber would lead me towards a career in blogging. It’s pretty remarkable when I think about it.

It really is true that you never know where a career in the trades will take you.

I know we need more skilled workers on the tools. There was a decrease in apprenticeships last year and a decline in apprentices finishing their training.

But being on the tools isn’t the be all and end all of getting a job as a tradie.

My trade story shows you just never know where a career in the trades will take you.

In some ways, I’ve felt guilty that I have been writing a plumbing blog, but I haven’t been on the tools for 3 years. How can I write a plumbing blog if I haven’t been on the tools?

Why the hell can’t I? If I enjoy it and it helps people, then why not? And it allows me to be the mum I always wanted to be.

At the end of last year, I crazily took on some new writing work. I was a bit pushy in getting it. And then when I was sent my topics, I felt way out of my comfort zone. I was writing about things I had no idea about. I messaged a good friend to tell her I didn’t think I was capable of producing what was expected. But my friend assured me I could do it.

And I did. And I was proud that I got the work done and I surprised myself with my skills. The articles have yet to be edited so the feedback might not be good, but at least I dug deep to produce the work.

What I’ve come to realise, (and it’s a lesson I’m bringing into this new year) is I should never fully be satisfied on where I am because I should always be striving to do better.

Saying yes to a new opportunity and digging deep to produce good work has built my skills and confidence up.

Saying yes to something could take you somewhere you never anticipated, or it could just build your confidence for the next time you feel out of your comfort zone.

So my encouragement for you this year is dig deep and build yourself up.

It’s pretty simple, but I reckon it has the potential to see advancement in new territories, and that can only be a good thing.

What do you do when you feel like you’re not where you’re meant to be? Have you got a word or phrase for 2017?

And That’s How We Ended 2016

And That’s How We Ended 2016

How the heck did we get to New Year’s Eve? Only last week I was finishing up my writing deadlines and directing Jacob on what presents still needed to be wrapped.

And Christmas is all over red rover.

All week I have been meaning to write about what happened leading up to Christmas and how Christmas day went and what we’ve been up to, but it’s been nice not being on the computer.

But of course, I read Bron’s post about how a blog can keep a record of memories and that was the kick I needed to get this post up for you on how our family celebrated the end of 2016.

So the week before Christmas, I was decluttering and selling all the baby toys because we don’t have a baby in the house anymore (sob and fist punch at the same time). Phoebe is 2 and we no longer need the rattles and light up toys and things that the girls’ haven’t played with… since I can’t remember when. The decluttering made room for new Christmas gifts.

We also had a day trip out to the Ipswich Art Museum. I highly recommend you take your kids out there if you live in Brisbane for a day out. It was what Esther describes as the ‘best day out ever’ because there’s a construction zone and a taped zone that the kids had a ball playing in. I may have also enjoyed playing there too. We had so much fun with our school friends. It’s lovely to be able to make memories together.

We then made an impromptu visit to the movies to see Trolls. I just love hanging out with our school friends. They truly have been a blessing to our lives this year.

On the Wednesday night I headed with dad to the Breakie Creek Hotel to catch up with our old plumbers for a Christmas dinner. It’s nice to know that some things have changed but not a lot has changed with plumbing since I left that sort of work 3 years ago.

Thursday night we raced the family into Southbank to see the carols as presented by our church. The presentation was STUNNING and so well done. We saw the fireworks afterwards and had a walk down the Christmas markets. Brisbane sure does shine at Christmas.

On Friday afternoon we headed into the city to go to the Myer Giftorium so the girls could ride the Santa Express. I also promised the girls could make their own teddy or Barbie doll as part of their Christmas gifts for the year. All three girls decided to make their own teddy which cost me an arm and a leg.

We lined up down the Queen Street Mall to watch the parade which was sponsored by David Jones this year. The girls were thrilled to be given balloons as they watched the parade go past.

From there we headed to watch the light show on City Hall and then it was time to go home to get ready for Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve was spent cleaning and baking and getting ready for Christmas Day. We had Jacob’s mum come up and we headed to church at night, which was so special and the sermon was one of the best I’ve heard about Christmas. It was about being uncomfortable and how Christmas was uncomfortable for many. I thought the message was fitting for the year we’ve had this year because it’s been an uncomfortable year for a lot of us.

Our family came over late in the afternoon for Christmas dinner. We’re pretty fuss free when it comes to Christmas food. It has to be easy and delicious. As most families in Australia we have been eating ham for days.

Since Christmas day I’ve spent time reading and going to the movies. I’ve seen Sing, La La Land and the new Star Wars movie.

I’ve also spent time thinking about what I’d like to achieve next year. I’ve written a list of all the things I’d like to do around the house and in my personal life. There are 57 things to do. Not a big list at all.

If I’ve learned anything at all this year it’s to be grateful that I’m well and alive to make lists and dream big. When I hear about people dying or running to save their life from war or whatever terrible situation they find themselves in, I thank God that my problems aren’t life threatening and don’t have the potential to kill my ability to think and dream. My family is safe and that’s something to be very grateful for.

family 2016

A lot has been said that 2016 has been a terrible year. I think it was a challenging year and one where many lessons were learned. For me, 2016 has been a catalyst to make changes in my life for next year. It’s brought beautiful people into my life, but it’s also taken many from it.

So Happy New Year to you all. I love the fresh feeling of a new year. It’s like going to bed with clean sheets which I ironically changed today as a way to celebrate the new year.

How has 2016 ended for you? What was the biggest lesson from this year and what do you hope for in the new year?

End of Year Feels – A Reflection on 2016

15
reflection of 2016 end of year feels

It’s less than a week till Christmas and I’m yearning for the peace that is promised at this time of year when everything stops right on Christmas Eve.

It’s been an exhausting and emotional year and yet it’s also had some fabulous moments which have made this year turn out to be quite ok.

My Esther graduated from Prep a week and a half ago and I couldn’t be more proud of the girl she has grown into this year. I feel like I’ve only just got the hang of school drop off and pick up and now here we are, finished for the year.

And I’ve been getting Kindy emails for Maggie as she starts her new schooling adventure next year. I remember the tantrums I’d have to put up with to get her away from Kindy when I would drop Esther off, and now she’s old enough to go. I don’t think I will escape the tantrums with Phoebe in tow though.

I find Christmas time is always a great time to reflect on some of the highlights and lowlights of the year. In a way it can help raise up goals and new intentions for 2017. So I’ve put together a template of reflections – based on emotions which you’re most welcome to copy and paste as a personal reflection, or a reflection on your own blog.

End of Year Feels – A Reflection on 2016

Proudest Moment – Being named Female Plumbing Ambassador for QLD. It was a huge honour and I’m looking forward to seeing who will be recognized in 2017.

Happiest Moment – Realising I’ve made some amazing friends unexpectedly. In the moments where I take time to list all the things I’m grateful for – like my husband, my girls, my family and my old and new friends – I realise my life is full and I can’t wait for it to be fuller with more people to love and share life with.

Saddest Moment – There were a few. Jacob and I lost 3 members from our family this year. Our nephew who was born at 19 weeks and 6 days and passed away shortly after. Jacob’s Grandpa passed away at the end of August and my Grandma Jones was reunited with my pa in October. It’s never easy losing someone you love. I’m just thankful for the memories and have faith knowing that each of them are in a better place.

Embarrassing Moment – I had a few embarrassing moments. Most of them happened at Problogger Conference. I never mentioned this moment in my Problogger recap post because it is just way too embarrassing. Anyway, I’m going to share it here because I’ve had a couple of months to get over it.

When Lauren and I checked into our room, I was curious about the signs in the hallways pointing to the ‘selfie lift’. While Lauren fed Oliver, I decided to investigate what the selfie lift was. For some reason I had no shoes on as I didn’t expect to go anywhere. So I followed the signs and found the selfie lifts were the Goods Lifts. As the Goods Life opened on my floor, I could see there was a beach backdrop and props to take your own selfie in the lift. I didn’t quite understand that memo until later though.

Mick, a Problogger cameraman, was in the lift holding his camera. I squeeled like a school girl and walked into the lift, chucking on the glasses, feather boa and a hat. Mick was holding a camera so I assumed he was going to take my photo in the lift. When he didn’t take my photo, and the lift went up, I assumed he was taking me to a room set up as a studio to get my photo. The doors opened to level 15 and Mick walked out, with me behind him. I thought I had to follow him as obviously he was taking me to the ‘studio’. It wasn’t until I was right behind him and he opened the door to his room that he turned around towards me and asked me “can I help you? Is this your room?’

I was confused and said “well no of course not. Aren’t you going to take my picture?”

And then I went red in the face and realized I had COMPLETELY misread the situation. I had to take my own photo in the lift because it was called a ‘SELFIE LIFT’. On another hilarious note, Mick wasn’t walking back to his room. He was heading to someone else’s room on the Problogger team.

I walked back to the Goods Lifts in my crazy get up, only to find the door was locked so I had to use the normal guest lifts to go back down to the foyer and back up to my own room and tell Lauren all about my embarrassing misdemeanor.

Omigosh! I just have the most embarrassing tale about the #selfielift but here @createbakemake and I are giving it a whirl. #pbevent by @theplumbette

We ended up getting a selfie taken in the lift. But Mick couldn’t look at me the same way again all throughout the conference. He follows me on Instagram so I don’t think I freaked him out too much.

Testing Moment – Navigating and balancing young children, working from home and my faith. It’s never easy and despite the romance some mums think working from home can be, it can be draining and hard to balance. But I’m also grateful that I have flexibility to be there for my girls while they are so young.

Funniest Moment – this one borders with my embarrassing moment. I could share many funny moments with my kids. My Maggie comes out with some of the most funny phrases. At the perfect time. Like the time I was walking the girls to school and someone had put their fertilizer on the lawn and Maggie exclaims ‘Poo, someone’s breakfast STINKS!’ I couldn’t stop laughing and had to tell her it wasn’t someone’s breakfast, it was just horse poo.

But back to my funniest moment. It happened at Problogger during afternoon tea. These amazing donuts came out and Jess Peachy from Peachy Keen Mumma asked me to pose behind some donuts for an Instagram pic. So I lean in as if I’m going to eat a donut, but before Jess takes my picture, she says “Bec you have something under your nose”. I’m like no I don’t and rub my nose only to feel something dangly drop to the floor. Jess walks around and points to the massive booger on the floor. I was mortified and then I couldn’t stop laughing. Thank goodness it didn’t drop on the donuts…

Never stop a plumber from getting her afternoon doughnut, right @theplumbette? #pbevent by @peachykeenmumma

A Lesson I Learned – I think it’s a lesson I’m reminded constantly… that God brings the right people in your life at the right time. Sometimes though, some people no longer want you in their life because of whatever reasons they are and it’s important to respect their wishes and move on.

Favourite Blog Post I’ve read – This post by Bron from Maxabella Loves on having it all. It struck a chord with me and many other mums. Definitely a must read. Close second would be this post by Kelly from A Life Less Frantic about an unsexy word for 2017 that will make it your best year yet.  And close third is by my blogging bestie Renee from Mummy Wife Me about taking a leap into the unknown.

Favourite Blog Post I wrote – So hard to choose… I might have to write another blog post with links to my favourite posts I’ve written. But I think this post is my favourite because it pushed my boundaries in the sharing department, but also is a different type of writing for me, let alone a different type of um plumbing.

Close second would be this post about bullying. It needs to be stamped out everywhere – especially in schools because too many kids are taking their lives because of it.

What I didn’t get to do this year that I will do next year is – Edit my book. I didn’t get to it for a number of reasons – mainly time which is always the same answer, but this year I had to devote time to projects that would bring in immediate financial benefit so the book had to be put back on the priorities list. But next year I’m hoping to get that book finished and look at ways to get it published. My book is about how I became a plumber and all the setbacks I had to get to where I am now.

Something new I did or had happen – I started pitching for freelance writing work. I’ve never done it before and I found the process a fun challenge. I also got my first blog post published on the Huffington Post AND my plumbing advice was published in a national magazine, Inside Out. I did a number of speaking engagements and I got my first bobble head as part of the Face of Caroma 2016 competition.

I have my own bobblehead! Thank you @caromaaustralia. You even got my fringe right. 😉 #faceofcaroma #femaleplumber #straighttothepoolroom #plumbers by @theplumbette
