Five Of The Best Plumbing Showrooms in Brisbane

5
five of the best plumbing showrooms brisbane

When I was on the tools and getting the best prices for fixtures for contracts we had won, Reece wasn’t the only place I would contact to get the best price or order in the obscure fixtures that were exclusive to certain bathroom stores.

There were 5 main bathroom stores that I did pick-ups from in Brisbane. These stores also are five of the best plumbing showrooms in Brisbane. (in my opinion)

If you want to broaden your bathroomware horizon to see other brands available, here are my other showroom recommendations.

Reece Bathrooms
25 Montpelier Rd Bowen Hills, QLD, 4006
Phone (07) 3257 3230

reece bathrooms showroom
Even though every Reece Showroom around Brisbane has something unique to offer a customer, the Bowen Hills stores offers the most extensive range in Brisbane. Heading out to Reece at Bowen Hills means you can also call out to the next showroom which is just down the road.

Tradelink
74 Montpellier Road, Bowen Hills, QLD 4006
Phone (07) 3252 1811

tradelink showroom
Tradelink offers a great range of plumbing fixtures and tapware and offers some of the same brands as Reece. What sets the two stores apart is there are brands that will only be exclusively ordered through the chains. Tradelink at Bowen Hills was my go-to store if I needed to get gear into the city or on the way to the north side of Brisbane. If I was south of the river, I would head to Reece West End or Reece Salisbury/Coopers Plains.

Christiaan’s
Suite 9 121 Newmarket Road, Windsor, 4030
Phone (07) 3357 7713

christiaans brisbane bathrooms
For the bizarre and obscure European taps and fixtures, I would head to Christiaan’s. They offer a showroom showcasing the best designer and high brand taps and fixtures. Great to look at, but not fabulous to install and expensive to maintain (just my opinion). It was always fun to visit the showroom to see some amazing fixtures that are innovative and stylish.

Rogerseller
72-78 McLachlan St, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006
Phone (07) 3251 4333

rogerseller showroom brisbane
I have fond memories of fitting 2 toilet suites, 2 basins and tapware in the back of my Toyota Yaris before my dad upgraded my car to a ute. The Rogerseller warehouse was near my home and dad would always get lost heading there, so it was my job to pick up our orders. The warehouse is no longer near my house as pickups are now made from the showroom in Fortitude Valley.
Rogerseller offers modern, simplistic yet innovative design in plumbing fixtures and taps. The showroom is modern and well set out. If I ever had an exclusive plumbing event, I’d hold it in this showroom. Rogerseller was the first brand to introduce black toilet paper to me, way before The Block did. It’s definitely a showroom to check out when you’re in the city.

Farleys Bathrooms
214 Days Road, Grange, QLD, 4051
Phone (07) 3356 8466

Farleys Showroom
I have childhood memories of visiting this showroom on the Grange and I made a few pick-ups from this store. Farleys have over 50 years experience in bathroom products. They offer a range of products from leading suppliers and have the capacity (at times) to match prices and order in some of the more difficultly sourced bathroom products that consultants would specify. Farleys is on the Grange and they also have a showroom at Springwood on the south side of Brisbane. I’ve never been to the Springwood showroom so I’m not sure if it’s better than the Grange, but it’s still an alternative if you don’t want to travel to the north side of Brisbane.

These are my top five plumbing showrooms in Brisbane. If you live outside of Brisbane, Reece and Tradelink will most likely have a showroom near you – they may not have all their products displayed, but sometimes this can be a good thing when making a decision on what you like. Alternatively you can do your research online, but sometimes it’s a good to see the taps and fixtures installed in person to ensure they are the right look and feel you are after.

Have you ever visited a plumbing showroom? Where was it?

The Desires of Your Heart as a Parent

10
desires of your heart

At my old church, there were initiatives and events in place to get more women to connect with each other. To mainly get the older and younger women interacting with each other.

To broaden my friendship group from the girls I already hung out with at church, I decided to go to these organized dinners with women who I had never met with before.

Back then I was the worst person to judge someone on their appearance or how they came across.

She looks like a teacher, she looks organized and her earrings match her skirt.

She’s definitely a mum, she looks very tired and her hair is in desperate need of being done.

She’s a business woman – possibly a lawyer, very straightforward and I wouldn’t want to mess with her.

Now before you judge me and think how bitchy I was (church girl and all!), I believe we all have a tendency to think like this whenever we meet someone. It’s taken me years to train my mind to stop the commentary and just meet and love people however they present themselves.

Anyway, while we were at this dinner, there were only a couple of women I recognized. From memory we were at a Thai restaurant and we were sitting at tables that allowed for easy conversation to take place.

As we were getting to know each other by finding out where we worked or what we did or how many children we had – before I could even say I was a third year apprentice plumber and had no children (yet), one of the ladies that knew me piped up that I was a career girl and children were the furthest thing from my mind.

Quite the contrary.

Kids had been on my mind ALL through my apprenticeship.

I mulled over how I could pull off running a business with kids.

I needn’t have worried because life’s circumstances and the desires of my heart took precedence.

After the career girl announcement, I felt a weight in my stomach.

Did I come across as being career driven? That was not what I wanted to be known for.

I wanted to look feminine and stronge. A true Proverbs 31 woman who enriched my husband’s life and was respected by those who worked with me and by my future children.

But I obviously didn’t come across that way to others.

Of course I smiled and explained kids were on the horizon, but not for the moment and I certainly wasn’t a career girl. I was learning to be a plumber.

I was recently reminded of this event in my life as I was thinking about how much easier it was to work towards your dream/s before you had children.

Anything seemed possible.

And then you have kids and it can seem impossible to achieve anything.

family time

Take heart.

Parenthood is demanding and often the best dreams and plans are laid when you’re raising your kids, because rather than thinking about what is best for me and what do I want to achieve, these questions will always take the family in consideration. It’s crucial as parents to follow our dreams to inspire our kids with what is possible with hard work and determination.

Bec and Phoebe

Since Phoebe turned 2, I’ve been thinking about what is expected from a licensed female plumber. I’m out of the baby years now and it’s time to get back to work.

Except the work at home has got busier because I am now in Toddler-dom.

At the Plumbing and Gas Awards, a conversation with a well-known, successful plumber told me not to miss these early years with my children if I can afford it.
There was no expectation to be back on the tools. It was an imaginary expectation (although there has been an inner desire too) I put on myself which has caused me to doubt what I’ve chosen to do.

My days can be mundane and monotonous, but I love that I am home with my kids during the day, and can work early in the morning and late into the night. There will be a shift when I can work during the day when the kids are in school/kindy, but for now, the lifestyle is what it is so I can have the best of both worlds.

Bec and Esther

If you feel incredibly slow at building that dream business or studying that new career, take heart. A slower pace means you can enjoy all the things God has blessed you with in your life.

I’ve had to remind myself of this recently and even though I sometimes get frustrated, I also know that there is beauty in the monotony and slower pace of creating  and building in my life. I know those desires of my heart will come to full effect at the right time. As they will for you too.

Do you create imaginary expectations on yourself now that you’re a parent? Do you ever get frustrated with how slow it can be to build your business/study/ work towards a new career now that you are a parent? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

10 Tapware Mixer Brands to Consider for Your Home

9
tapware mixer brands

When my dad used to challenge me to make up my apprentice wage by getting the best prices on fixtures and taps on tenders we had won, I always enjoyed the challenge.

Until the consultant or architect specified something bizarre that required to be ordered in by a specialized bathroom supply company. Often there was little movement in price on these particular pieces.

Often these brands were so obscure, it took weeks for the items to come into stock and they were dear as poison.

I was recently reading a blog post by a high profile design blog and when I read all the tapware brands that were recommended I smiled and thought typical interior designer.

I have nothing against interior designers, architects or consultants. Their job is an important one in the design process, but often they don’t understand the installation or maintenance aspects of the brands they recommend for bathroom or kitchen renovations. The look doesn’t always meet practicality and as most interior designers don’t install the taps or see them when they are run down

So I decided to share some posts recommending brands for tapware and fixtures.

The key things to look for when choosing your bathroom taps and fixtures is the warranty, cost and feel of the mixer. That’s why it’s good to go to a showroom to feel how the handle works when it’s turned on and off.

Here are 10 tapware mixer brands to consider for your home.

In most cases a matching basin and kitchen mixer can be ordered to create uniformity in the home.

1. Dorf

Dorf Tapware Mixers
Dorf Mixers

Dorf is definitely a brand to be considered simply because their residential products now come with a 20 year warranty. They are leading in the industry simply for their warranty and their offerings will suit most budgets and tastes.

2. Sussex Taps

sussex tapware
Sussex tapware

You only have to enter the Sussex Taps website to feel the quality of tapware this brand offers. From minimalist to modern and retro shapes, Sussex Taps are definitely a great consideration for your mixer tap purchasing.

3. Fienza

Fienza Mixers
Fienza Mixers

Fienza are a fairly new brand to me, but Barbara from Reece Coopers Plains told me they were a brand of tapware to consider because of their sleek lines and incredible quality for a great price.

4. Phoenix Tapware

Phoenix Mixers
Phoenix Mixers

Phoenix Tapware offer mixers for the heritage or colonial style home (think gold and curved shapes) as well as basic mixers with modern or basic lines that can suit all styles of bathrooms and budgets. I’ve dealt with them personally with warranty issues which can I say can happen with any tapware brand – and their customer service was personalized to fix the issue. They are definitely a brand to consider for your mixer tapware needs.

5. Teknobili

Teknobili Mixers
Teknobili Mixers

Teknobili offers mixers that are a combination of fashion and statement design. Their mixers are more straight lines and offer a symmetrical look. They have a solid manufacturing background from Italy. Definitely a mixer to consider for the bathroom and kitchen.

6. Milli

Milli Mixers
Milli Axon Basin Mixer Rose Gold Black, Milli Glance Basin Mixer in Rose Gold

If you’re after mixers that are offering the latest trends in interior design, Milli mixers will add that modern touch to your bathroom or kitchen. Black mixers and rose gold hardware make these a mixers the perfect option if you are wanting to make a statement in your bathroom.

7. Hansgrohe

hansgrohe axor mixers
Hansgrohe Axor Organic Mixers

A popular tapware brand among hydraulic consultants when wanting mixer that is different but will offer quality. Hansgrohe are known as a high quality tap that offer innovative and interesting designs in tapware.

8. Nobili

Nobili Mixers
Nobili Mixers

Nobili offers tapware that is affordable using European styling for an Australian market. Another quality mixer that offers great design and style.

9. Laufen

Laufen Mixers
Laufen Mixers

Laufen is becoming a popular name in bathroom brands due to its Swiss roots. Laufen offers innovative and out of the box options for bathroom tapware and fixtures. Loved what I saw in the Reece showroom. A quality tap that is known for it’s design and extra features.

10. Posh and Porcher

Posh Basin Mixer

Porcher Pull Out Mixer
Porcher Pull Out Mixer

For a basic mixer that will do the job in high traffic areas, where design is not the focus, but quality is, Posh and Porcher mixers are the perfect solution. Many plumbers keep these brand of mixers in stock on their ute (we did) for the clients who weren’t particular about a mixer style, but needed a quick fix.

Have you had to choose new tap mixers? Which brand of mixers did you choose? Which mixers would you choose from this mix?

Plumbing Night of Nights – The Plumbing and Gas Awards 2016

19
plumbing and gas awards 2016

On Friday night I attended the Plumbing and Gas Awards 2016 to celebrate the achievements of those that work in the plumbing industry. The awards don’t just recognise plumbers and apprentices. The awards also celebrate the achievements made by mentors, business managers, consultants and companies that work within the industry. As Penny Cornah, Executive Director of the Master Plumbers Association of Queensland (MPAQ) describes it, ‘it’s the ‘Logies’ for the plumbing and gas industry’. And it certainly had that atmosphere about it.

This was my first plumbing awards night and I was asked to present the Andrea Vogler Women in Business Award. I was a little nervous because over 500 attendees were to be present and I had no idea who had won until I opened the piece of paper on stage. The nerves were quite apparent when I fumbled to unseal the paper and joked that I wasn’t used to fake nails. #beautyfail

The Plumbette Plumbing Awards 2016

Speaking about beauty and looks, I was nervous about how I was going to appear at the awards. Vain I know. But it was black tie and I had to find a suitable dress.

Brisbane decided to turn up the heat on Friday by raising the barometer to 27 degrees. I had to make a dress change which can only be described as a miracle as I was actually going into a shop to buy an appropriate undergarment to suit the dress I was originally going to wear.

I bought a new dress for $50 and was thankful I opted for a sleeveless option because I felt hot! (I may have also looked it – my husband told me so)

My nerves soon dissipated when I chatted to Phil Denman, from the Queensland Building and Construction Commission upon walking into RICC.

I then ran into one of my old TAFE teachers, Morgan, who is now a plumbing inspector on the Sunshine Coast.

As Jacob and I made our way to our table, I recognized a woman who looked up at me expectantly, but I couldn’t put my finger to her name until I realized it was the MC for the night, Eva Milic from Channel 9 news.

She was down-to-earth and asked if I knew much about social media? Well yes Eva, I’m a blogger as well as a plumber. I may know a thing or two about social media.

She asked me would the hashtag for the night work on Facebook?

Yes, it would, but more people would use it on Twitter and Instagram, was my reply.

I asked for a selfie so we could practice the hashtag on Instagram. The best way to learn something is to practice it, don’t you think?

I wished I had practiced announcing the winner’s name to the category I was asked to present. Well done to Jody Monaghan for winning the Andrea Vogler award for being the manager of her family plumbing business, Stimson Plumbing in Dalby. I got to hear Jody’s story first hand once all the awards had been announced. I look forward to sharing it with you here on the blog in a future post.

My inspiring friend, Carlie Low who was the first female plumbing inspector in QLD, won the QBCC Women in Plumbing and Gas Award. It’s always exciting seeing people you know and admire be recognised.

Bec and Carlie

At the end of the night I mingled with many of the guests. I got to say hi to the QLD Regional Manager for Reece, Sam Ansell. I also got to share where I was at with my own plumbing journey with Kelvin Slade, President of the MPAQ.

I want to congratulate the MPAQ for creating a warm atmosphere within the plumbing community. Every time I looked up, I saw many of the MPAQ staff interacting with their members and guests and the comradery between staff and members was heartwarming to watch. I encourage all plumbers in QLD to sign up to be part of the MPAQ to feel that support because running a business can sometimes feel isolating. But you don’t have to do it alone. The MPAQ are there to support their members and fight for issues affecting their businesses. They understand the stresses of running a plumbing business and navigating change in the industry. For enquiries on membership, head here.

I want to thank the MPAQ for the incredible honour of being the Female Plumbing Ambassador for QLD and being made a special guest at the awards. Your belief in me and what I have done and continue to do has helped me to reach towards new goals and horizons.

The next event to keep an eye on is the Plumbing and Gas Convention at the Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast on the 1st and 2nd of September. And yes it’s a week before the Problogger conference. The RACV is literally going to be my home away from home in September.

Ever been to an event that’s been well organized? Even had to change your outfit at the last minute to an event?

Our New Eclectic Pendant Lights in Black and Copper

4
pendant lights in black and copper

Around 8 months ago – it could also possibly be a bit longer than that, I broke a bulb on our pendant light that hangs over the dining room table.

broken pendant light

I actually liked our chandelier type light when we first bought our house. It was unique and I had never seen anything like it before.

old pendant

But then after watching a few renovation shows and seeing pendants become the in thing, I started to dislike our light.

Sometime last year, as I was whipping a scarf off my neck near the dining table, I somehow lassooed the scarf around the light and broke a bulb.

We weren’t sure how easy it would be to get a new bulb so we decided to replace the pendant with something new and modern.

Just before Christmas last year, I asked my electrician, Stew, how busy he was leading up to Christmas and he told me he could fit me in to replace the pendant.

Well the problem was I couldn’t find anything I liked. The pendant had to be big, but unobtrusive so that you could still see the photo gallery on the wall.

The hunt to find a pendant light that was modern and fit the criteria of being big, yet unobtrusive was hard.

I liked the idea of having a set of pendant lights across, but didn’t want the extra expense of adding power to three separate places.

Jacob and I decided we would go to Bunnings and get a Geometric looking pendant that would work well in our space. But when we went to buy it, it looked cheap and I wasn’t convinced it was the right light for our space.

We booked Stew in to get some electrical work done at our house last Friday, so the pressure was on to find a pendant so Stew could replace our old one.

I rang my brother who is the assistant manager at Beacon Lighting down at Southport and hoped he could show me something else that wasn’t on their  website because none of their pendants had tickled my fancy either.

We made the trip down to the shop and this helped me to work out what I liked and definitely didn’t like.

pendant lights Beacon Lighting

I told Andrew I wanted pendants but I wanted them to come out of the one spot.

And that’s when she showed me a new item that hadn’t been released to the public yet.  It’s a black cluster plate which can hold up to 6 pendant lights. The cluster plate was a game changer because it could fit over our existing hole in the ceiling where the other pendant light had hung, plus I could choose an array of pendants and use hooks to drape them where I wanted them over our dining table.

Bec and her brother
Me and my brother Andrew.

I decided to go with pendant lights in black and copper and chose 4 different styles that would work together

I’ll be honest, I could sort of picture what it would look like, but I also was worried, that it would look like a dogs breakfast!

Once the lights were chosen and bought, I couldn’t wait for Stew to come over and install them.

The next big decision was working out which pendants would drape where and the heights. I had to make sure that the lights looked even from every angle.

Electrician
Stew feeding the pendant lights through the cluster plate

With a bit of swapping and umming and aahing from me, I finally worked out the right combination and I am SO happy with the way it turned out.

I was project managing to ensure we got the right look

The photos don’t give the lights justice. I’m not photographer, and I think they look much better in person than photographed.

But here is my attempt at showing you what it looks like now. This photo was taken before I did a change in some styling.

We originally had 40 watt LED carbon look bulbs in the cage and flask type pendant, but they were too bright. We exchanged them for the carbon bulbs which offer no light, but they do give the right amount of ambience and the exact look I was after for our space.

I think what makes this combination work well is having different sized lights, same colours using black and copper and having extra down lights meant we didn’t have to worry too much about what light would emit from our pendants.

Now to ensure it doesn’t get too dusty!

Have you ever found it hard to choose the right lighting for your home? Ever left something broken for a long while because you couldn’t decide on what you want?

Home Improvement Thursdays
Last week on Home Improvement Thursday, Michelle from Jarrah Jungle showed a step-by-step process of making a rain chain from her down pipe. It’s very cool. Michelle lives in WA so if you are wanting to do a similar installation at your home, check with your local council if it will be approved.

Sarah from TOMFO shared a really clever way to personalize your shampoo containers in the bathroom. If you’re particular about how products look in your bathroom, this could be a great little DIY project.

Your Influence is Unmeasurable

30
your influence is unmeasurable

‘Omigosh Bec, you have to read this new blogger I follow. Her posts are funny as f— and she is so relatable.’

I smiled at my friend because I knew exactly who she was talking about.

Since writing on the internet and reading a myriad of blogs and (commenting on said blogs), I am always familiar with new blogs or bloggers that resonate with the online reader.

There are also many I don’t know too. But the ones that provide viral content tend to be the ones many of us bloggers know about.

The blogger my friend was talking about was Constance Hall.

Her posts are raw, funny and so so relatable. She’s ballsy and always surprises me with her frankness. I don’t always agree with her, but I see her heart. Her posts offer a different point of view, always encouraging mums around the world to be their own Queens. I totally RESPECT her.

Her influence is one that many bloggers dream of. Especially when she promoted Rafiki Mwema – a charity that provides a safe house for Kenyan girls who have been rescued out of sex slavery. The charity needed $75,000 to purchase land for a new development and through Hall’s blog and social media influence, $200,000 was raised. I’d love that kind of influence to raise money or awareness for good.

Of course, as bloggers or even individuals who want to be successful, you could look at Constance and envy her influence. It seems she got success overnight simply for writing a post about parent sex.

The thing is Constance has been writing on the internet for 10 years. Most successful bloggers and business people have been at their craft for a number of years. Their breakthrough comes after years of hard work. Often it’s the passion that pushes through the doubt of whether their work matters to others. Their work has to matter to them first and often that’s what pushes them to persevere.

dontcompare

This year I have seen blogs close up shop or bloggers question their relevance in a highly populated online media environment. The 3 and 4 year mark seems to be the time bloggers question their influence.

I get it because I have been there a few times this year. And you know what has saved me?

The one.

The one reader that has reached out and asked for advice.

The one comment that says they relate to what I’ve written.

The one plumber who has asked for advice.

The one female plumber who has asked for prayer or if I’m aware of job opportunities.

The one mum who responded to my call out for prayer requests, and keeps me updated with her family’s progress.

There have been many unusual requests this year and I find it a privilege to offer advice and counsel when I can.

The one is not a new concept. I believe Emily from Have a Laugh on Me said if you are helping one person with your blog or if only one person reads your blog, your voice is important.

This year I’ve also read posts about being a useful blogger and writing posts for the sake of writing a blog post because… you want to.

The thing is, you are someone’s inspiration. Your influence is unmeasurable.

influence

Everyone’s journey to success looks different. You can’t bank on how many years one blogger has been writing for to expect your ‘breakthrough’. Everyone experiences lows and highs at different times. It’s all part of the adventure of being a blogger and working towards the individual goals we’d like to achieve because of our blogs.

So don’t question your validity. Maybe question your technique or question your audience on what it is that they are wanting to read or see or hear.

I’m only four and bit years into this journey and curiosity and determination are my driving forces to see what comes from it all. And if the path leads me to somewhere I didn’t expect, at least I can say I had fun along the way.

Tell me, how are you feeling in the blogosphere? Do you feel like a fish in a big big sea? What are your blogging dreams? Write them here and lets spur each other on and see everyone succeed!

The New Reece Plumbing Showroom Coopers Plains

2
Reec plumbing showroom coopers plains

A question I get asked a lot by friends and family when it comes to plumbing is where the best place is to view taps and fixtures.

While it’s great perusing plumbing products online and seeing photos of them installed in renovated spaces, nothing can beat viewing the taps and fixtures in person.

My advice has always been to go to a Reece Plumbing Showroom closest to where you live as most of the popular brands are installed in the showroom.

One particular showroom that I have been desperately wanting to visit, without the kids, is the new Reece Showroom at Coopers Plains. The new store is 18 months old and so much better than the supply store dad and I would visit years ago in Salisbury.

Reece Plumbing Coopers Plains

With Jacob home this week, I got to have a look at the showroom and get an update on the latest brands. Many I still recognized, but others have popped up since I stopped work when pregnant with Phoebe.

The store is managed by Des Beckett who I’ve had a working relationship with since I was an apprentice, and helped dad with our family business. Des would often get a call or two from me on quotes, availability of products and finding obscure fixtures specified by consultants.

Barbara Moorhead is the Showroom Consultant and was only too happy to tell me the latest developments in tapware and fixtures. And boy, has a lot changed since I stopped being on the tools.

For one, tap finishes have expanded. Chrome, white and gold were often the available tap colours you could choose from, but these days there is so much more choice. Rose Gold, Copper, Brushed Copper, Black, Chrome, Brushed Chrome, Brass… are just some of what is available. You can even buy mixers that have handle panels that can be changed to a different colour. It’s the perfect tap for those that like to change their interiors often.

I get excited seeing new products and perusing the possibilities when I see taps and fixtures displayed.

One of my favourite features in the show room was the interactive shower bay where with the press of a button, you can see (and feel) the pressure of the shower head in action.

Barbara told me that each Reece showroom will be different from the other, but will have the vast majority of products installed so consumers can make an informed decision. But each showroom will have a special feature that makes it stand out from the other.

Having been to other plumbing showrooms on the south side of Brisbane, I can honestly say the Coopers Plains Reece Showroom is the place to go if you want to be inspired. It’s new, it has a lot of products on display and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you’re an interior designer or builder on this side of Brisbane, rather than hike clients into the city, take them to the showroom at Coopers Plains to choose their taps and fixtures.

Thank you to Barbara and Des for the chat. I was very impressed with your new space.

Do you head to showrooms to check out products? Where do you go to view new bathroom products?

8 Ways Your Birthday Changes as Soon as You’re a Mum

30
birthday changes

I had a great birthday on Saturday. I didn’t have any expectations, but I did make hints on possible things I’d like to do on the day and those hints were heard.

The morning started with two eager faces, wanting to wake me up so I could open presents. The thing was I had been up at 3am because I couldn’t sleep, and had pumped out this blog post, then crawled back under the covers just after 5am.

Jacob sent the girls out to the family room to watch a movie so we could sleep in a little more.

It worked for approximately 10 minutes.

Finally, we relented and Jacob and the girls disappeared to get the presents.

The best part about receiving presents is not usually the present themselves, but the intention behind the gift. Kids just love to give, and sometimes they also like to step-into the spotlight. Which made me think how my birthday has changed since I’ve become a mum. Birthdays are a big event in our household, but I don’t always get to indulge in the spotlight.

Here are 8 ways your birthday changes as soon as you’re a mum.

1. There is no such thing as a sleep in on your birthday. The kids will wake early and they will be eager for you to open your presents. It’s just like Christmas morning.

2. You will have help opening your presents – or your kids may just open them for you. If you have multiple kids that want to help, delegate. One child opens the card, the other helps unwrap the present. Another child can put the present in a pile and if you have more kids than this, give everyone a turn.

kids opening presents

3. You will get more gift cards and cash than actual gifts because there’s not much cash left in the family budget to indulge mum. These are greatly received. I will be using said vouchers to get household items we are in desperate need in.

4. You will have to share your presents. Maggie bagged my Samantha Wills ring and Esther told me all the things I could buy her with my Target gift card.

opening presents2

5. You will crave time alone. And you will get it, but the lounge room will turn into a disaster zone. You can’t have it both ways.

6. The kids will tell you how they would like to spend your Birthday, which makes sense because if the kids are happy, mummy should be happy too.

7. You will have help blowing out your candles. There may be more spit than air when said candles are blown out. But that just adds flavour to the icing.

blowing out candles

8. You will have to deal with sugar-high kids after they’ve had cake. There is no time to contemplate getting another year older when your toddler has a melt down after eating all the icing from her piece of cake. And then you have to clean their sticky hands afterwards.

In many ways, having children makes birthday celebrations even more special. Kids love to celebrate and when there are presents and cake involved, how can you not be excited by it all?

Thank you so much for all the birthday messages on the blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. I’m slowly replying to you all as I can.

How have birthdays changed for you since you’ve become a mum? I will get to open my presents one day in the future… won’t I?

32 Things You Need to Know

25
32 things you need to know

It was the early 1990’s and I was over at my Grandma Jones’s house in this exact room.

grandma's lounge room

The blue and green carpeted, purple walled, green ceiling lounge room.

Grandma and I were talking about the year 2000. She had worked out that she would be 70 years old and I would turn sweet 16 and never been kissed. (Sorry Grandma, I got kissed. But I think we had a few conversations about the happenings in youth group where you put two and two together, literally!)

I remember thinking how could I possibly turn 16? What would I look like? How tall would I be? Would I have boobs?

And then the year 2000 rolled over and I admit I was fearful about life in the next century. I felt like I had to make all the big decisions with the pressure of performing well at school and getting good grades to go to University which I turned down in order to go to a business school and get a head start at getting a good job. The good job would bring in good cash so I could save and buy a house.

I tended to be the kid that had the 5 year and 10 year plans figured out. I had hoped my plans could control the future.

What a crushing lesson to learn in the big wide world beyond school.

I couldn’t control life. I couldn’t control curve balls and the biggest lesson from all that was realizing I couldn’t predict when I’d change my mind.

Today I turn 32! The year 2000 was 16 years ago and here I am another 16 years later contemplating how the heck I actually got here, but ever thankful that I have, and very expectant of another 16 years plus more.

32 today

I love even numbers. Not sure why, but I’m happy to have turned an even number this year.

I usually like to write a retrospective post about things I’ve learned and I was thinking about sharing 32 things I’d like to do.

But then on the eve of my Birthday, while I was sitting in church, I thought it would be cool to share 32 things you need to know. Pieces of advice given to me from those that believe in me or I respect in many ways. They’re quotes, sayings and verses that are to encourage you as you live life.

Life can throw many challenges our way and for me, prayer and meditating on biblical truths and wisdom of amazing leaders have helped me to persevere and troupe on with a cheerful heart.

It’s not easy to do. But choosing a cheerful stance helps me to get through challenging times. It’s not always my default stance, but I become it when I pray and focus more on what God wants to achieve through me rather than what I want to achieve for Him.

So here are my 32 things you need to know. Some snippets of wisdom from people I admire.

I hope they encourage you today.

1. If you honour God, God will always honour you. Colin Jones (Bec’s Dad)

honour god

2. I couldn’t do what you do. But you were born to do this. The best is yet to come. Janice Jones (Bec’s Mum)

3. This book (The Bible) will keep you from sin, or you will find, sin will keep you from reading this book. 9th July 1995 Gordon and Betty Jones (Bec’s Grandparents) (And they were right. Oh so right!)

4. Being somebody who brings out the best in everybody makes the world a happier place. The Plumbette

5. Joy is a decision, not a feeling. Colour Conference 2016

6. Never give up. A river cuts through a rock, not because of its power, but its persistence.

7. God is closer than we know. Bobbie Houston.

8. Trust yourself. You know more than you think.

9. Don’t Fit in. You were born to stand out. Dr Seuss

10. Your greatness is revealed not by the lights that shine upon you, but by the light that shines within you.

11. The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.

12 Celebrities Who Were Tradies Before They Became Famous

12
12 Celebrities Who Were Tradies

Everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to finding their dream career. Sometimes the career we choose changes or evolves as time moves on.

There are many celebrities who started out as tradespeople before they got their lucky break into a career that catapulted them into the spotlight. Here are 12 celebrities who were tradies before they became famous.

12 Celebrities Who Were Tradies Before They Became Famous

1. John Farnham

Any time I hear a song on the radio from John Farnham I’m taken back to my childhood. My parents had his cassettes on high rotation in the car. The 80’s hit singer was an apprentice plumber in the 60’s and a part-time musician before he signed a recording contract with EMI in 1967.

2. Mark Beretta

I learned about Mark’s family history with plumbing at the Construction Skills QLD Excellence Awards in 2008 when he was the MC. He was originally a plumber’s labourer before he got his break into media.

3. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Seems Arnie has had a few career changes in his life. He worked in construction to make ends meet before he became a movie star. Arnie was also trying to be a professional bodybuilder and even partnered with a bodybuilding friend to create a bricklaying business.

4. Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi, like Arnie, was a bricklayer before she became a star.

5. Harrison Ford

If Harrison didn’t train as a carpenter he may not have been in Star Wars. Before becoming Han Solo, Harrison trained as a carpenter and was hired to install cabinetry at George Lucas’s house.

6. Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy trained to be a plumber before he became famous for heavy metal.

7. Michael Caine

Mr Caine became a plumber’s apprentice before becoming an actor.

8. George Harrison

Changed from learning to be an electrician to being renowned for playing electric guitars.

9. Kesley Grammar

The struggling actor painted offices to make ends meet before ‘Frasier’ became a hit series.

10. Sean Connery

Before Mr Connery became Mr Bond, he was a bricklayer.

11. Elvis Presley

Presley worked as an electrician’s helper before sparking women around the world with his voice and acting abilities.

12. Matt LeBlanc

The Friends star comes from a genealogy of tradesmen. His grandfather was a carpenter and his dad was a mechanic. Le Blanc was training to become a carpenter before becoming an actor. He told Jimmy Kimmel Live “I made a complete kitchen and installed it in a house,” he said.

As these celebrities show, being a tradie can be the foundation to a great career.

I can’t knock off that potential career in TV after all! 😉

Did you know the history behind these celebrities?  Know of any other celebrities who were tradies before they became famous?

Look How Far We’ve Come

26
look how far we've come

When I worked as an apprentice, I’d get home from work around 3pm. I’d change into my running gear and would walk 10 minutes to the nearby lake and then run 5 times around the circumference (1 lap is about 2.5km).

I headed back to the lake yesterday to spend some time brainstorming about the blog and thought about how fit I was all those years ago.

how far we've come forest lake

Even though I was tired from a heavy day of labour at work, I still had enough energy to run over 12km.

How the heck? I need some of that energy back!

I’ve always loved visiting the lake at Forest Lake, but moving away from within walking distance and having kids and having little margin in life has prevented me from getting there more often.

I did try to make a habit of walking around the lake last year when I’d drop Esther to Kindy, but Maggie would always want to stop and play at each park and it would be a challenge to get her and Phoebe back into the pram to walk back to the car.

My friend Astrid, runs Simple Bliss Coffee on the Lake and I hadn’t checked out her set-up until yesterday.

I’m kicking myself for not coming sooner.

Simple Bliss Coffee forest Lake

As I perched myself up at one of the benches, sipping my chai latte and watching the ducks dive in and out of the water, I pondered how much my life has changed since living in the Western suburbs.

Simple Bliss Coffee View

I remember when Jacob and I were newly engaged in 2004 and headed to the same spot where the coffee shop is to search for our first home.

I remember the excitement about spending the rest of our lives together and the adventure of buying our first property.

I also remember the frustration of finding the right house and how after searching all day, we found it, took my parents through at 6pm and made an offer. The offer was accepted and we had bought our first home.

Fast forward nearly 11.5 years later and we upgraded to a bigger family home, filled it with children and I’ve had a few career changes amongst the expansion.

After my brainstorming session and reminiscing at the lake, I jumped in the car to drive past our old house. The gardens we put in before selling were no longer there and those dreadful venetian blinds that our dog Bentley tried to destroy were replaced with a roller blinds. Not much had changed, but the outside looked old.

Sometimes it’s nice to go back and remember where we’ve come from in order to be thankful for where we are now.

I certainly don’t want to go back to living in those days, but it does excite me to think what our future days will hold.

If those 11.5 years have been packed with life, imagine the life that can be packed in the next decade or so?

The possibilities excite me. And they should excite you, no matter where you are at in life.

I challenge you to take a trip down memory lane and remember the good times, the happy memories that have shaped your life. Spend time to dwell on them and remind yourself how good life has been.

Because sometimes we forget and don’t remind ourselves how far we’ve come.

how far you've come

Do you look back and reminisce the good times? Are you hopeful about your future?

What I Learned About Myself and a Stuck Pop-up Plug

6
stuck pop-up plug

I had just got out of church on Sunday morning and I got a message from a friend, asking me how to take out the pop-up section of their plug and waste. My friend wanted to clean under it, but she wasn’t able to unscrew it.

stuck pop up waste

I told her that it should unscrew and to try using some multi-grips with a chux cloth to try and budge it out – but to be careful as this could break the basin.

My friend decided to give up and wait for her husband to come home and undo it. As a last resort I told her to pour some vinegar down the drain, leave it and then come back and see if it would budge.

vinegar pop-up plug and waste

Would you believe, the vinegar worked! It loosened whatever crap was keeping the plug form unscrewing.

The whole ordeal had me second-guessing my knowledge. I thought it was strange that the pop-up plug wouldn’t screw out. I even asked my mum in the car whether her pop-up plugs unscrewed out in case I was completely wrong.

I knew that I was right, but part of me doubted myself and I thought, ‘I’ve been out of the game too long’.

Having kids can do that to you. You’re thrown into the world of babyland – where you know your Bugaboos from your Baby Joggers and your Baby Bjorn from your Ergo Baby. Add in sleep deprivation and a bit of insanity from being asked the same question 5 times because your toddler refuses to hear a ‘no’, and honestly, I understand how mums feel totally incapable of returning to their old job.

But the knowledge and skills are there. They’ve just been over-ridden by motherhood.

The lesson I learned out of Sunday’s ordeal is to trust myself because I know more than I think.

trust yourself

And even if I don’t know the answer, it doesn’t mean I’m incapable, it just means I’ve got room to grow and learn more.

Have you felt incapable since becoming a parent? Do you sometimes worry whether taking time out of the workforce affects your skills?

Expanding Your Capacity

22
expanding your capacity

Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, we head out to our ‘connect group’ as part of our church.

Connect group is a group of families that meet together to hang out, talk about life, pray for each other and be a support to each other during a busy season of life.

For me, it’s a stretch to go on a Sunday afternoon. I’ve made it a habit that all Sunday afternoons are my time for rest -where I will nap, catch up on some reading or Netflix and just Chill – you can read that as you will. 🙂

But the kids LOVE when connect group is on because they get to play with their friends. And when I arrive, I love it too because they are fabulous friends who just get the season of life we are in.

Last Sunday afternoon, we headed to our connect group. Our host leaders opened a discussion on a recent message at church about working at capacity and being content with the life season we are in.

Each of the couples – or one half of each couple would share about how their own capacity has been stretched since having children and what they got from the message.

After everyone had shared, it was my turn. And I smiled at the ceiling and tried not to cry as I said I was at capacity. Totally, 100% at capacity. Life is full and busy and there have been problems I wish I could get a handle on.

Life this year – possibly the last 12 months – has been hard. There have been great moments – but there have also being trying and testing times as well. And in the frustrations I have sometimes felt a seed of negativity enter my heart and I’ve seen it has affected my usual positive, go-with-the-flow nature.

I can’t for the life of me remember what else I had to share but as I blurted out how I had been feeling, Jacob smiled at me as he was sitting adjacent to me. It was a proud, but knowing smile and I wondered exactly what he was smiling about.

And then I fell in love with him all over again as he shared with the group that despite how I felt, he was amazed with my level of capacity to see others and help them with their various needs.

Jacob and Bec

He shared with the group how I took time to make and deliver meals, catch up with friends and encourage others when they were struggling. Even though I was going through my own issues, he had noticed my heart and how my capacity had enlarged this year. Rather than feel like a failure of a person, I thought, maybe I’m not doing so bad after all.

When I look at myself, I see chaos. A mum who is a bit scared of what the future holds. I had hoped that after going through uncertain times, I would have learned to lean on my faith. But I’m still learning and growing and trusting.

No matter how busy life gets, I do believe we can expand our capacity. But it can only happen when we trust God and ask Him to show us who and what we should be doing each and every day.

I just wonder if I’d have half my inner battles, if I listened more and became more attentive to God’s plan rather than my own.

For me, I didn’t even think about the people I had helped when I was sharing about how I was at capacity in my life. I was thinking about the kids, my work, my husband and other commitments that take time and energy. I didn’t see helping people as draining my energy or adding to my workload.

You see everyone is riding the same boat. We are all busy. Our schedules are crazy. But I really believe our capacity grows when we look beyond ourselves and know we are helping someone else.

Kindness never grows old and I think we can all increase our capacity to be kind to others.

Do you feel like you’re living at capacity? Do you allow room in your life to help others, or do you do it as you see the need?

My Last Minute Coffee Date

18
my last minute coffee date

On Monday I was feeling a little flat. Nothing unusual had happened, but I had a lot on my mind and Esther was home sick and I was worried she wouldn’t be able to go to her school excursion the next day.

It was around lunch time I got a message from Brisbane’s Australia’s Best Baking Blogger who also happens to be one of my bestest blogging friends, asking me if I would be her plus one to a Gloria Jeans Coffee Masterclass to help raise money for Variety.

Create bake Make The Plumbette

It was just the perk I needed to get out of my funk. So I rang Jacob and asked if he’d mind that I go and arrangements were made that Lauren would pick me up.
After a little detour or two getting to the location (we nearly drove onto a bike track. I told Lauren to go a certain way, and she said ‘I can’t’ and I was like ‘why?’ and she responded ‘Because it’s a bike track!’ I then swore and laughed. I snapchatted the whole conversation and it was so funny for us to listen to, but I chose not to broadcast it because of the swearing. You totally had to be there to see the funny side.)

cappy hour gloria jeans

Anyway, we made it to the Gloria Jeans Masterclass at Windsor and I felt so out of my league with the young whipper snappers that were attending the event. I think Lauren and I were a good ten years older than most of the young people at the class.

The reason Gloria Jeans held the event was to promote their Cappuccino for a cause, their largest annual fundraising campaign, which has raised more than $750,000 for their charity partners since 2009. This year Gloria Jeans is partnering with Variety Queensland – the Children’s Charity and are running ‘Cappy Hour’ from 2pm-3pm every day where you can visit your local Gloria Jean’s coffee house and for a gold coin, receive a free small cappuccino – with all proceeds going to Variety.

Lauren and I learned about how coffee is made. We smelt samples of stale coffee and fresh coffee and we learned how to make the art on top of the coffee cup. It was a really interesting night.

I’m no coffee connoisseur, but lately I have been drinking it more.

After the event, Lauren and I decided to find somewhere snazzy to eat, but both of us were tired and busting to go to the toilet so we lived it up at McDonalds. #livingthedream

If you do buy a coffee from Gloria Jeans, why not share it on Instagram and add #cappyhour to the photo. When the hashtag reaches 10,000, Gloria Jeans will add an extra $10,000 to the donation.

What do you do when you feel a little flat? What’s your favourite coffee?

Thank you to Lauren from Create Bake Make for inviting me to be her plus one. This post is not sponsored.

The Review I Couldn’t Do – Ryobi Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer Review

2
ryobi cordless pole hedge trimmer

Back in February, I noticed, well Jacob made me aware, that our next door neighbor’s Lilly Pilly hedge was growing over the top of the side of our fence. It was so big, it was shading our vegetable garden, which required much needed sunlight.

The hedge was so thick and high, I knew it’s leaves and fruit would disperse into our gutters. Which is not ideal when I don’t get a lot of time to clean the gutters as it is.

I knew we needed a pole hedge trimmer that would cut the hedge down so it wouldn’t be so high and it could stop shading our vegetable garden. Even though the hedge grew from our neighbors side, I knew they wouldn’t have minded us trimming it down as we had communicated about doing so before.

I had written about Ryobi on the blog before and with a bit of research, and a talk to a Ryobi Rep at Bunnings, they had a pole hedge trimmer which would do the job. After an email and some questions to Ryobi, working out which hedge trimmer would be best (petrol, battery, pole or short handle), we were sent this Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer which uses the Plus One Battery pack. (The batteries can be interchanged between cordless tools in the Ryobi One + range)

ryobi cordless hedge trimmer

The moment the delivery arrived, I couldn’t wait to try it on the outdoor front hedge for a bit of a practice run.

Sometimes I can get a bit ahead of myself wanting to try something new, so it was just as well Jacob reminded me about safety and my need of personal protective gear. Good point my dear husband!

ryobi hedge trimmer

I came back with my safety glasses which have been gathering dust since the last time I used them and got down – or rather up – to business.

It was so much fun. Although Jacob had to give me pointers to cut in a straight line!

I loved that there was no need for a ladder as the pole is 2.8m long. It was easy enough to lift and handle to get the job done.

As the afternoon light started to disappear, we decided to leave the hedge over the vegetable garden for another day, when the sun would be brighter and Jacob could take better pictures. (I still trimmed a little but not much.)

trimming over vegetable garden

Well that afternoon never came. The following weekend we had rain, then the following weekend I was sick and it seemed I just couldn’t get out to trim that hedge.

We made plans to cut the hedge on a Sunday afternoon after everyone had naps. We went to church that Sunday morning and came back to see our neighbors had cut down the whole hedge.

Hedge is gone

I won’t share what choice words I said (I said them laughingly). While I was incredibly grateful the hedge had been cut down… how the heck was I going to do my review?!

Of course, when I told my dad about my predicament, he was the first to put his hand up and say he’d be happy to watch me trim the hedges at his place. So I’m tentatively booked to do some gardening work at my parent’s house. Which will feel just like old times back on the tools. Dad watching and telling me what to do, while I ignore and joke around, doing my own thing because I’m always right. 😉

The good thing is, the hedge near our vegetable garden will definitely grow back, and now I have the tool to keep the hedge in control from my end of the fence!

Ever gone to do a job, only to find someone has beat you to it? Do you need me to come and trim the hedges at your place? Joking, I charge a very high call out fee! 😉

Disclosure, I was gifted a Ryobi Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own. Wait for the next review when I head to my dad’s place. It will be cutting edge.

In The Waiting

47
in the waiting shirts

A couple of weeks ago I was going through the depths of my wardrobe to give it a really good clear out. I’m still hanging onto items that I wore pre-baby and hope (fingers crossed) I will get back into again.

While I was going through my wardrobe, I found 20 plumbing work shirts that had been pushed to the back. The sizes ranged from S to XXL to accommodate pregnancy and all the seasons between when I was a plumber. Some had silicone or glue attached and yet others were still in their plastic, never worn. I have them sitting in my office and I’m not sure what to do with them.

plumbing shirts

The shirts are embroidered, so I can’t donate them. And I can’t quite get myself to chuck the shirts away either.

They’re just another reminder of the life before the change. And I don’t know why I keep being drawn to life in the past.

in the waiting plumbing shirts

In the last couple of weeks – possibly months, I’ve been really thinking about what I want. In amidst the thoughts, I’ve been wondering whether the tradie lifestyle is a good fit for me as a mum. When I had Esther and Maggie, I definitely thought it was, but with the addition of Phoebe, I knew it wasn’t.

I don’t think there is any industry that is best suited for motherhood. Sometimes you’re forced to carve out your career to suit the flexibility needed so you can have the best of both worlds – working and being present with your family. Most times you have to make the best of what you’ve been given from your employer.

I don’t feel like I’m managing as well as I should with the life I’ve created. Sometimes I feel like I’m just hanging on, but still willing to climb up to the next milestone or season.

I know I’m not the only one that feels this way. Maxabella Loves shared this post, which resonated with me 100% and I loved this post from Fat Mum Slim about doing it all.

The thing is I want to live a full life. I want to be busy – not busy in a rushed, don’t have time to chat way, but busy because I’m tending to the things I’ve been blessed with.  I don’t want to be bored. I want to enjoy my busy-ness.

Jacob is going to be having 2 weeks off work in the next week or so and I can’t wait to put a plan together and really nut out what I want to do.

I turn 32 in a couple of weeks – another reminder that I’m not getting any younger and if I really want to give something a go, now is the time to really nut out exactly what it is I want.

In the meantime I’m also going to practice my patience to ensure that what is being stirred in my heart is exactly where God wants me to be. I just love these verses from Isaiah 40:27-31 from The Message.

Why would you ever complain, O Jacob,
Or, whine, Israel, saying
“God has lost track of me.
He doesn’t care what happens to me.”
Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening?
God doesn’t come and go. God lasts.
He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine.
He doesn’t get tired out, doesn’t pause to catch his breath.
And he knows everything, inside and out.
He energizes those who get tired,
Gives fresh strength to dropouts.
For even young people tire and drop out,
Young folk in their prime stumble and fall.
But those who wait upon God get fresh strength.
They spread their wings and soar like eagles,
They run and don’t get tired,
They walk and don’t lag behind.

I know in the waiting, I’m building my strength even if I don’t feel like I’m going very far.

Ever found something that took you back to your old life? Ever felt stirred to do something more, but have been hesitant about the timing?

You Can’t Live Off Exposure

24
paid with exposure

I was called to fix a small leak at a house a couple of suburbs away from my home. The job was going to be easy enough and I was thankful for the call for help.
I greeted the client and they showed me where the leak was under the basin. A replacement flex hose was all that was needed to fix the issue. I checked over the rest of the plumbing under the vanity just to make sure there were no other problems I missed.

I headed out to my ute and wrote up the invoice. A call out fee was all that was needed as I hadn’t been at the job for too long. I headed inside to see the client to hand her the bill and tell her the leak had been fixed.

The client looked at me sheepishly and told me she couldn’t afford to pay my bill. She called me because she knew I was starting back up again and had hoped that I would do this job as a gift. But in payment for my time, she had the numbers of two friends who desperately needed a plumber. The referrals would make up for not being able to pay me.

Not one to cause a fuss, I smiled at the client and thanked her for the referrals. It was just a call out fee after all. Had the job incurred more cost, I would have been more concerned. But I took it on the back. I assured her I would call the referrals straight away.

As soon as I got back into my ute, I rang the two referrals. I was booked in to do both jobs and they were happy for me to see them that day.

I headed to referral customer number 1 who needed an inlet valve changed on their toilet cistern. A simple job, which but can be fiddly if you don’t know what you’re doing. I had changed them plenty of times before. After the cistern stopped leaking and filled easily with water, I headed back to my ute to write up the invoice. I headed straight in to see referral customer number 1, only to be told they couldn’t pay me either. There was no money in their budget to pay me this month, but for exchange of my good will and excellent work ethic for fitting their job in so soon, they could offer me three referrals – more clients = more work = more money.

I was a little annoyed. What was with these people today? No one wanted to pay! They just wanted to give me more work. I said thank you. I very much appreciated the referrals because I definitely needed the work. I ripped up the invoice and headed back to the ute. I rang the three referrals and all of them booked me in to fix their various plumbing issues over the next few days. It was turning out to be a busy week.

But what turned into busy week of ongoing work turned into a crappy week of doing jobs for free. No one wanted to pay for their bills. They only wanted to pay with referals, in hope that I’d get paid from those jobs and wasn’t it a great thing they were helping me build my business?

By the 6th referral I told them where they could shove it.

Sounds like a ridiculous tale doesn’t it? I mean who pays with referrals?

The blogging and content marketing industry does!

Blogging is the new marketing tool to bring traffic to a website which means those hits can turn into leads and possible customers. But where do companies and websites turn when they need consistent and quality content on their sites? Bloggers!

And in exchange for their hard work to keep the content consistently maintained on their website, the blogger is promised with back traffic to their blog which means a blogger’s site will get more readers which of course ups the fee of influence when getting brands to pay for advertising and sponsorship.

But here’s the sad fact.

In most cases, very little traffic – if not NONE, heads back to that blogger’s website. For all the big websites I’ve written for, it takes a quick scan in google analytics to see that my top ten traffic referrals for my site are NOT from sites that I have written consistently for, on very little pay or sometimes for free when I was a naïve and I-have-no-idea-what-I’m-doing blogger. (I still don’t know what I’m doing)

I was made aware this week of a real estate agency who wanted a weekly article submitted to their site in payment for… exposure.

Exposure doesn’t pay the bills.

If we are going to talk about exposure, let’s talk about exposing companies and brands with incredibly low business ethic in expecting bloggers and freelance writers to work for free.

It’s time to expose these websites. Because this type of exposure means bloggers know not to waste their time when they’re approached. And if no one writes for these sites, the company is forced to find the dollars to pay someone to do it.

Which is how the company should have approached the blogger in the first place.

I’m sick of seeing bloggers being paid with ‘exposure’.

The exposure payment system sucks. The odd guest post is different. But when a company or brand requires consistent posts on their blog, this work needs to be paid for.

Being used and paid with exposure are pretty much the same thing.

exposure doesn't pay the bills

Do you agree? Has the exposure payment system ever worked for you and your blog? Am I the only one exasperated by this flaw in the blogging world?

Unusual Toilet Paper Storage Solutions For The Bathroom

10
toilet paper storage

We keep having toilet blockages at our house and it’s not because of excessive number twos.

Phoebe is entering the terrible twos, pulling off whole rolls of paper and dumping them in the toilet. This wouldn’t be a problem if she didn’t know how to flush the toilet. She grabs a stool and presses the button and obviously watches in delight as the toilet fills up and blocks. And then her work is done and I’m left to discover it and fix it.

blocked toilet

Usually I can scoop the paper into a bag, but often there are remnants that are unreached by hand and the good old plunger saves the day. Jacob gladly watches me work.

plunging toilet

We did have a toilet latch by Dreambaby®, but Phoebe soon took a hold of it and I think it’s been flushed down the toilet. (Sorry Urban Utilities!)

Anyway, with all the toilet paper dramas, I came across some unusual toilet paper storage ideas on Houzz. If you’re looking for something that will make your bathroom stand out from the rest, maybe take some inspiration from these ideas.

The Divider

I’d be scared having this in my bathroom with kids. Do all the rolls fall into place like tetris when one is taken? Knowing my girls, they’d take them out of each divided section they can reach.

Four Seasons Art Loft

The Rope

Use a rope to strand a toilet roll or two. A great idea when a back-up is needed. Also makes it difficult for little hands to unhook and unthread.

East Hampton Beach Cottage

The Pull Down

I’ve never seen anything like this before, but it kind of appeals to me because Phoebe wouldn’t be able to reach it, but you’d want to have good arm height to reach for the paper when sitting down.

My Houzz: suspension of disbelief

Lonely Dinosaur

This is a bit innovative. Using a toy dinosaur to hold the paper. I’m not sure how hygienic this is when everyone has to grab the dinosaur to unravel the roll….

Vintage Apartment in Portland, OR

Wall Hooks

A good way to keep the paper out of reach of young children. Easy to yank off the wall and onto the hook when needed.

Maison V Villennes sur seine

Magazine Holder

Never thought to repurpose a magazine holder to store toilet paper. But I like it. Not so good for my household at the moment. Could also pose as a target risk for little (and possibly big) boys.

Life Happens – Inspiration from the Migas Excellence in Trades Awards

20
life happens migas awards

Last Friday night I headed to the Migas 2016 QLD Final and National Gala Dinner Excellence in Trades Awards.

It’s a bit of a mouthful to type and write.

But it was a night to honour and celebrate trainees and apprentices who have excelled in their training.

Last year when I attended the awards, I had the honour of presenting the Female Excellence in Vocation Award. This year, there was no pressure to present, only to be present to congratulate the achievements of the Migas trainees and apprentices.

The night was off to a good start as I could fit into a dress I had bought pre-Phoebe and Maggie. Walking Esther to and from school most weeks has been helping my waistline.

Bec in City

The awards night was being held at the Hilton in the city. The last time I was there, I attended a blogging function organized by Nikki from Styling You for the two year anniversary of #everydaystyle.

Philip Marwedel, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Migas recognized me as soon as I headed towards the board showing the seating arrangements. He ushered Jacob and myself to meet his wife, who I had met briefly at last year’s event.

Jacob and I were introduced to other guests sitting at our table. And they were delightful. Ironically, one of the guests recognized me as the Plumbette who advertised on 96.5FM. Her husband worked for a law firm in Waterfront Place and Jacol Plumbing had done the plumbing in their tenancy. #smallworld

The biggest surprise of all was to see a friend (and client) from the past who was also attending the awards.

The doors opened to the Ballroom and our table was right in front of the stage.

place setting

Tom Thum started the night with some awesome beat boxing. If you follow me on Snapchat (I’m theplumbette), you might have seen some footage of what we heard.

Food was served and speeches were made.

tom thum

The most inspiring speech of the night was made by Australian of the Year, David Morrison.

David Morrison Australian of the Year

I felt like his speech was specifically for me – although, it was applicable to everyone in the room.

There was so much gold in David’s speech, but what I remember the most was when he explained how none of us really know where our training will take us. We ask ourselves if the apprenticeship (or studying or training) will take us to where we want to be. We don’t really know if it will.

But we make plans and takes steps in anticipation it will.

David then shared a quote from John Lennon.

Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.

The reason David’s speech resonated with me was because I never imagined my apprenticeship bringing me to where I am now. Life has definitely happened while I’ve been busy making plans. And even though my plans have changed and I might not be on the tools at present, the blog makes me accessible to encourage and advise where needed.

Just last week I had a first year plumbing apprentice ask me a question he couldn’t find the answer to. I was able to answer him straight away on Facebook. He thanked me, saying, ‘You’re the best. Wish they’d explain it like you at TAFE.’

And yet, despite the enquiries and the encouragement from others, I still doubt whether I’m doing enough.

But as David said, what we do in the present, paves a way for the future and this is what creates our legacy.

David was so humble when I met him. I told him how his speech encouraged me. It felt like he was genuinely thrilled to speak to me and to hear parts of my story. He asked me if I’d encourage my girls to take up a trade and that’s a question that I will dedicate a blog post to. He also asked me how long I had been a plumber and when I did the math in my head I realized I started my apprenticeship ten years ago.

Bec with David Morrison

So much has happened in those ten years.

What if I didn’t take the risk of leaving my sales executive job to be a plumber all those years ago? What if I gave up and never completed my training? There were plenty of times when I wanted to chuck the tools down and quit.

But I didn’t and my determination paved the way to where I am now.

As I clapped for each apprentice and trainee that walked across the stage to receive their award, I wondered if they had ever thought of quitting? What was their motivation? Some shared they wanted to be managers or run their own business one day. No matter what their dream is, their present training and support from Migas is paving the way towards their future. And even if they are to walk away from their trade, they are learning vital skills that can be drawn on in any season of their life.

Who knew I’d walk away from an awards night inspired and encouraged, even though I didn’t win anything or contribute in any way?

Special thanks to Migas for inviting myself and Jacob as guests. The event was brilliantly presented and the work you do in supporting apprentices and trainees is creating a legacy for their future and the future of our trades industry.

When was the last time you were encouraged about what you do in the present? Do you ever visualize the future ramifications of the work you do now?

A Good Plumbing Story

5
a good plumbing story

When you choose a good plumbing product from a good plumbing retailer and hire a good plumber to install said product, you’re going to get a good outcome, even if the product fails during warranty.

Last week, my dad called me to look up an old invoice from a maintenance client to see what date he had installed some new taps. The taps had become faulty and the client wanted to get them fixed or replaced under warranty.

A quick search of the client’s name and I could see that we sent the invoice in April 2013. I know most taps usually have a warranty of up to 2 years. The first 12 months includes full replacement and installation costs. After 12 months, the brand will usually supply new tapware and it’s the client’s cost to get the taps replaced.

I told dad that the taps were out of warranty as it had been over 3 years since they were installed.

The client took our invoice information and headed to Reece Plumbing where the taps were originally purchased. Reece were able to do a search for purchase on their system and these particular taps from Dorf had an amazingly 15 year warranty! (After talking to a Caroma Manager at the PIPE Expo, he believes the warranty is for 14 years)

The client was given new tap spindles and handles, but it was his cost to hire a plumber to install them.

The moral of the story is to always choose a reputable brand of tapware (and fixtures) and keep the warranties if you can in a folder. (Note: Anytime I purchase a new appliance or tapware for our home, the warranty paperwork and receipt goes into a file labeled “Warranties”.)

Purchasing from a reputable retailer like Reece means the paperwork is usually easy to find and the staff will be able to organise a replacement under warranty or order in new taps if necessary.

A good plumber will take the time to find a client’s invoice or job details and get back to the client with the information needed. That’s why good paperwork is necessary when running a plumbing business.

Have you got a good warranty or customer service story?

A Pull Towards my Old Life

35
a pull towards my old life

Last Thursday night, as I dished out dinner for the kids and Jacob, I announced my last minute decision to attend the Southside PIPE Plumbing Expo, coordinated by the Master Plumbers Association of QLD. (MPAQ)

Jacob, being the amazing man he is, ushered me out the door for some kid free time, while Esther cried that I wouldn’t be able to sing her to sleep. I told her I’d sing to her after I was home from the expo.

The expo is a chance for plumbers to check out new products and services in the plumbing industry. I’d never attended one before, yet I’d been personally invited and had declined the invitation because the timing wasn’t great for me. And then I looked at the invitation again and saw I could still make the event if I left straight after dinner – which would get me out of the bath and bedtime routine.

Part of me wanted to see what was new in plumbing. Sometimes I feel like I’m out of touch because I’m home with the girls, which is a bit ridiculous, as not a lot has changed in the last couple of years, and usually I’m on the forefront in knowing the changes because I read a lot and see a lot of it reported in the media or broadcasted via MPAQ on their social media channels.

The other part of me wanted some sort of adult conversation about the work I did before I became a mum. And this desire took me by surprise.
I’ve been reminiscing the days of heading out to work.

I’ve been dreaming of what it would be like to branch out a plumbing service through The Plumbette. I’ve wondered whether I could go back on the tools again – or hire a plumber or two to help me.

And yet the timing isn’t quite right for me to branch out. Having two kids in full time child care is expensive and I worry that if I busy myself with another business, I won’t have time to spend with my family. And really that’s more important to me than working on a dream I can’t possibly handle right now at this stage of my life.

So I’ve been thinking about how I could make it work in a couple of year’s time when all the girls are in school.

I’ll keep you posted on what I decide.

Anyway, I headed to the Expo, which was quiet, but suited me fine as I could make my way around the different displays and talk with the guys about their businesses.

ej australia

The first stop was to check out the grated drains at ej Australia. Business has been great for these guys as many architects and consultants have been specifying their grates for commercial use –  as well as residential –  especially in apartments at West End. I remember when I’d have to get quotes on the long stainless grated drains for commercial showers in the city. Floor wastes that have a piece of tile installed in the lid are very popular for floor wastes now. As is this floor waste.

Ej floor waste

My next stop was at the Caroma and Dorf display. Caroma are running their Face of Caroma Competition again for plumbers to enter. The first 200 entries will get their own bobble head which is pretty cool. There’s also $5000 worth of Caroma products up for grabs plus promotion of your business. Later this week I have a great Dorf tapware story to share on Home Improvement Thursday.

caroma dorf industrie

I admired the Dorf Industrie mixer, an industrial style mixer which looked really awesome on display. Not sure I’d have it in my bathroom though.

Kennards Hire had a fair bit of equipment on display. The newest service they offer plumbers is the availability of drain cleaning machines and cameras that plumbers can hire for a day. It means a plumber can do the work themselves rather than on forward the work to a plumber who owns their own equipment.

kennards hire

Halgan was the last display I got to check out. Halgan make septic tanks, trade waste products, rain water tanks and storm water drains. They also produce kidsafe grates which are safer around children – with no sharp metal edges that can be tripped over. Ironically, while I was trying to wrangle Maggie from the school fence after dropping Esther to school, I noticed the school has them installed for their storm water.

halgan

halgan kidsafe grates

The expo gave me an hour of being immersed in plumbing talk and reminiscing of my plumbing days with dad.

The PIPE Expos are a great event for plumbers to see what’s new in the industry. Sometimes, on a design and construct job, it’s up to the plumber to act as the hydraulic consultant to specify what products they’d install on the job. The expo gives great exposure to brands a plumber wouldn’t necessarily know about unless they’d been specified by a consultant to use them.

mpaq

It was a shame the expo coincided with another plumbing event, but I think the quieter atmosphere meant the plumbers who could attend were able to get more time to talk to the suppliers at the expo.

As for the pull towards the work I did before I had Phoebe, I’ve got a bit of time to work out exactly what I’d like to pursue.

I ‘m just not sure if it’s nostalgia that’s prompting me to go back down that path. I will just have to ponder a little longer.

Have you ever had strong desires to take up something you decided to stop so you could focus on your family? Ever made a last minute decision to go to an event?

I’m linking up with Essentially Jess for IBOT.

Bob The Plumber

0
bob the plumber

Yesterday morning after I dropped Esther to school, I made a quick phone call to my dad to organise a time to catch up. Sickness and medical emergencies had prevented us from meeting up for a coffee this week for our weekly catch up.

It was during this conversation that my dad told me the sad news that a plumber I worked alongside as an apprentice had passed away a couple of months ago. I was sad to have not known about his passing because if I had, dad and I would have attended the funeral together.

As I drove home, I got lost down memory lane, remember my time working alongside Bob. He was one of our oldest plumbers at the time and I don’t think he initially thought much of me when I started working alongside him as an apprentice.

Some of the key commercial jobs I worked with Bob as an apprentice were in dental or medical surgeries, bathroom fitouts in George and Ann St buildings in the city and at QUT University. Bob and I also spent a bit of time working out in Ipswich fitting off QLD Health and a Medical Centre.

I remember working with Bob at one particular medical centre in Ipswich where there was a bit of drainage that had to be done. Bob asked me to find a local Reece and get a particular plumbing fitting I had never heard of before. I was nervous about driving around Ipswich to find a Reece store. I didn’t trust my GPS, which was ironically a gift from Tradelink. Anyhow, I found a Reece which was a good 15 minute drive away, got the fitting, came back to Bob only to be told I got the wrong one. I remember Bob being frustrated and possibly thought this is why girls shouldn’t be plumbers! We both left site to get the right fitting, because Bob needed directions on where to go because he had no idea where a Reece was located in Ipswich either. That’s probably why he sent me out to get the fitting, rather than go drive out himself.

Another time we had a cabinetmaker blow up in both our faces when we asked him to cut in our sink for us while working at QLD Health. The cabinetmaker accused Bob of being a troublemaker on another jobsite. I remember getting defensive, wanting to tell the cabinetmaker to pull his head in… but I was outnumbered and we really needed our sink to be cut in so we could finish installing it. I remember Bob muttering to me cabinetmakers were all the same and I remember nodding with him in agreement, as he was telling me something I already knew.

I would have good conversations with Bob. He was a man of faith and had been on trips overseas to help in Missions. While overseas he met his wife. He didn’t have children.

Bob never told me what he thought about having me work as an apprentice. But he did one day tell me that he enjoyed working with me because the conversation was clean and wholesome, compared to what was discussed when he worked alongside our other plumbers.

One funny memory was when a group of our plumbers, including Bob, were working on a fit-out job in the city. The plumbers were talking about what they had for dinner the night before, (which was a much preferred topic of conversation than what they got up to with their missus the night before!). Each of us said what we had for dinner the previous night and Bob announced he ate 30 dim sims. (The exact number may have been less than this… or more) His wife made the best dim sims apparently. But I remember us all looking at Bob incredulously when he announced he had eaten 30 of them and nothing else for dinner. I think he had eaten some for breakfast that morning too.

I lost contact with Bob just after I had Esther. I knew he had experienced health issues in the last couple of years as he had diabetes.

I’m sorry Bob that I didn’t know of your passing, but I do hope that this post makes up for it. I know you probably couldn’t care less because you’re in a better place now, but I just wanted to let you know that I have good memories working alongside you as an apprentice. And I enjoyed our conversations too.

RIP Robert Munro
