The Block Reveals Hallway, Laundry and Powder Room

1
the block reveals hallway, laundry and powder room

It was interesting viewing on The Block last night, with a number of teams choosing not to finish their rooms for judging.

The teams had to present their hallway, laundry and powder room.

I felt a bit uninspired last night as I watched the room reveals. I’m not sure if it’s because of de ja vu and feeling like I’ve seen a lot of the styles before or whether the lack of motivation from the teams to finish rubbed off on the show as I viewed it.

It was as shame that some teams chose not to finish. There’s nothing worse than seeing unpainted walls during a reveal. The biggest lesson from the night was to never quit, even when things may look or feel wrong.

Some of the rooms had a lot of interior design flaws. It’s the risk  you take when being on a show like The Block… some of your design ideas may not pull off, and once they’re installed, it can be too late to change.

But some styling flaws can be fixed by changing the decorative pieces in the rooms.

Let’s look at what was shown last night.

Will and Karlie

I really enjoy seeing what Will and Karlie produce each week. I wasn’t a fan of their ensuite or main bathroom, but I did like what I saw in the laundry and powder room. I love the vanity they used in the powder room.  And I think the contrast between the black cabinetry in the laundry and plumbing fixtures in the powder room, contrast beautifully against the white splashbacks and walls.

Dan and Carleen

Dan and Carleen chose not to finish their rooms this week. They ran out of time and the result is not even worth writing about. But I reckon they will come good in the next week or so and their spaces will look awesome.

Julia and Sasha

Such a shame these two gave up in the end as they thought the walls in their hallway were out. But Darren Palmer measured them and found them to be spot on – nearly perfect. Julia and Sasha felt a little bit silly after being told that. As a result of the ‘wall disaster’,  they didn’t paint or style the hallway. The laundry and powder room were gorgeous – but also weren’t painted. The judges said they missed out on winning this week, and I agree.

Julia and sasha

Andy and Ben

The boys didn’t have much money to play around with this week and you could tell from their styling. Their laundry wasn’t a bad effort, but their powder room felt tall and narrow. I’d feel claustrophobic using their powder room I think.

Kim and Chris

Kim and Chris were the only other team that completely finished their zones, but their styling was way out. The laundry, as described by Shaynna, had a prison cell feel. I thought it did too, watching it from my living room. There is no contrast between the walls and the cabinetry.  The powder room did not look inviting either and the judges said it looked like a public toilet. I had to agree again.

Will and Karlie took out the prize in the end, but Kim and Chris weren’t happy with the inconsistency in judging.

It’s hard to accept negative feedback when you think you may have a chance of winning because you finished all your zones. But Kim and Chris just missed out because of their styling. At least it’s a skill that they can learn and evolve with over time.

Next week is the kitchen reveals, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the teams produce.

What did you think of the reveals last night? Which room do you like the best?

Bathroom Trends for 2017

1
bathroom trends 2017

As another year looms to an end, so do a run of trends in interiors. There are many predictions on what will be big trends in bathrooms next year so I’ve compiled a few of the common predictions that we will most likely see in bathroom designs in the coming year. You may even see them on The Block for 2017 but just remember you read them here first. 😉

bathroom trends for 2017

Bathroom Trends for 2017

Feature Baths are the Feature

The feature bath has been a dominating trend in main bathrooms. But now, it’s going to be the main feature with different shapes, sizes and colours to make it stand out even more. Depending on the space in the bathroom, a block coloured feature bath is the way to go. Think black, grey or a bold colour in navy or red.

Yorba Linda Residence
Kew Heritage Renovation and Extension

Minimalist Space

Bathrooms are going to be less cluttered with more concealed storage solutions. Benches will be less styled and more clear to allow for a ‘mindful space’.

Wood and Natural Materials Reign

Timber and natural materials like stone will still be popular choices in the bathroom. Both were introduced as key trends for 2016 and they will continue to be popular for their modern aesthetic and luxurious appearance. To keep in with budgets, indistinguishable imitative products will be used.

Prospect Heights Townhouse

Black and Brushed Metal Tapware

Black and brushed metal tapware will be the popular choices for water outlets in the bathroom. Brushed metal is a better choice than black as it will age beautifully over time, whereas black will lose its sheen from water marks. Trust a plumber on this one as stylists don’t go back a few years later do maintenance on them. 😉

Pretty Peace

Concealed Floor Wastes and Drains

Keeping in with the minimalist look, floor waists and drains will be concealed through tiling. Chrome grated drains are out.

concealed floor waste

Rimless Toilet Suites and Induct Cisterns

The rimless toilet suite from Caroma was introduced earlier this year and it will be a considered choice as it aligns with the minimal look in bathrooms as will induct cisterns.

Lighting Zones

Different lighting will be used to separate zones within the bathroom.

Neutral Colours

Black, white and grey will still be popular choices as they are modern and timeless. But there will be different tones introduced like charcoal, greige and granite.

Interview With Carlie Low – Brisbane Plumbing Inspector and Investigator

8
carlie low female plumber and plumbing inspector

If there is one tradeswoman who I’ve been encouraged and inspired by through my journey as a plumber and blogger, it would be Brisbane’s Plumbing Inspector (and now investigator!), Carlie Low.

The night I received my award at the Construction Skills QLD awards, Carlie found me to congratulate me on my win and I’ve always remembered how supportive she was of me as I worked alongside my dad.

It’s only been in recent years that our paths have collided, through connection on social media (and my blog) and catching up at various plumbing events.

I, of course was thrilled to see Carlie receive the Queensland Building and Construction Commission’s Women in Plumbing and Gas Award at the 2016 Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards back in July.

Carlie and Bec at the Plumbing Awards

Carlie is adamant about encouraging women to get into a trade and her career success has paved a way for other women to follow in her footsteps. I was able to get Carlie to share with me a bit about herself and her story to encourage you, wherever you are on your trade journey (or wherever you are in your own life journey).

Why did you decide to do a plumbing apprenticeship?

To be honest I have no idea why. I always remember that I wanted to be in the tourism industry or become a mechanic. I actually carried out a school based apprenticeship as I was over school, but I knew I still needed to get a Year 12 certificate in case plumbing never worked out. Thankfully it did.

Carlie female plumbing apprentice

What were some challenges with working in a male dominant industry?

To be honest it had it’s challenges that’s for sure but I don’t ever really remember them when I look back now (Can I still blame baby brains although my youngest is 2 1/2)! I used the challenges to make me stronger. Maybe that’s what made me so determined to keep on going.

Carlie at Parliament House
Carlie sharing about her career at the Women in Plumbing Breakfast at Parliament House

Has anyone inspired you while you did your apprenticeship?

No one really inspired me throughout my apprenticeship or should I maybe say my father. His dedication to his family run business and giving 110% to his clients made it all more rewarding and worthwhile. His passion for plumbing and protecting the community is why I was so drawn in also to do plumbing as a trade.

Where do you work in the plumbing industry now and how did you get to your current position?

I work for local government (Brisbane City Council) as a Plumbing Inspector/Investigator. I actually won an award after my apprenticeship and a few months after the awards ceremony I was contacted via a Plumbing Inspector asking if he could pass my details onto the Chief Plumbing Manager at the time and after an interview, my new career path started.

carlie plumbing inspector

What are the challenges of being a plumbing inspector and how do you handle them?

When I first started, it was a combination of being a female and being so young so I just had to prove that I could do my job just as good as the males, if not better. I don’t really face too many challenges now – well ones that I would classify as a challenge.

How did you manage being pregnant and a plumbing inspector and how do you manage being a mum and working full time?

Carlie plumber
Carlie with her gorgeous kids.

Being pregnant and carrying out my role as a Plumbing Inspector was quite good.  From about 6 months (pregnant) I was made office based as the risk carrying out inspections on construction sites could never be determined via a computer so if something happened to have gone wrong, the council did not want to be put in that situation.

So being a mum and working full time isn’t the ideal life for some but it works for me. I have been doing it since my eldest child was 7mths and my youngest child who was 8mths. It can surely take it’s toll but you just have to adjust to fit your lifestyle I guess. What might be a breeze for me may not be for someone else.

What does a typical day look like for you?

5.00am – 5.30am Get up, 6.30am Drop kids at kindy, 7.00am Start work, 6.00pm Arrive home, 6.15pm Get kids ready for bed and have dinner, 7.00pm Kids head to their rooms for a story book, 8.00pm Tidy house up (Dishes/Floors/Washing ect), 8.30pm – 10.00pm Start work on my part time job (Helping others with their Health & Wellness).

Carlie sharing at kindy

Why should women consider plumbing (or any trade) as a career?

Why shouldn’t they consider it? It is by far one of the most rewarding industries I say.

Carlie award winning plumber

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time I love to spend quality time with my little family before they grow up.

What other businesses or hobbies do you work on while being an inspector and mum?

I have a huge passion for helping others take control of their health both physically and emotionally. Nothing more rewarding than seeing someone have the most amazing life changing experience not just for them, but a lot of the time for the whole family.

Do you have any encouragement for girls finding it tough to keep working towards their license?

I can’t stress enough to just KEEP ON GOING, no matter what. Every single job, career, hobby, passion has a path like a rollercoaster.  It isn’t meant to be smooth sailing the whole time. Treat every challenge as a failure – treat it as learning, and build strength from it. You honestly have nothing to lose and a heap to gain.

See isn’t Carlie a fabulous role model for our industry? There have been many penny dropping moments after I’ve interacted with Carlie. I love her can-do attitude and she is definitely someone I’m inspired by within the industry.

Who inspires you in your trade or industry? Got anything you’d like to tell Carlie? Drop a line in the comments below. 🙂

The New Flat-Pack Home Available in Australia Described as “IKEA on Steroids”

4
flat-pack homes australia

If you can’t afford to a buy a home in Australia, there may be good news for you if you’ve been wanting to jump in on the property ladder.

A Sydney architect, Alex Symes, has founded a new business venture called Big World Homes which offers a flat-pack home that owners can ‘build themselves’.

Described as “IKEA on steroids”, the flat-pack homes offer a solution to sustainability and the housing shortage in Australia.

A one bedroom house measures 13.75 square meters and comes as a flat pack of 37 panels that require a drill, hammer and wrench to put together.

Alex Symes told ABC news, “It has all its water tanks; we have two potable water tanks, we’ve got one grey water tank, so all the waste water effectively comes to the grey water tank, you add an additive to it and then effectively that’s safe to go on your garden.

“We’ve got the gas cylinders for cooking and also for hot water heating, [and] we’ve got batteries at the back — they’re linked to the solar PV and that’s effectively what runs all your lights.”

Currently, Australia has the biggest houses in the world averaging 89 square meters, but the demand for smaller homes has increased as they provide an affordable housing option for home owners.

The flat-pack designed home from Big World Homes will set customers back $65,000. It includes ‘the trailer the home sits on, off the grid-technologies and all the white goods.’

The extra costs involved in getting the house is finding the land to place it on.

Alex explains, “We actually need to be able to curate land, big blocks of land, say brownfield sites or other pieces of open land in which we can host these big world communities.

“These pop-up communities where people who want to, say, spend a couple of years saving for a deposit or have a more flexible approach to their housing lifestyle can live on site on these curated communities.”

Tiny homes are becoming a worldwide trend.

“This is happening around the world. WikiHouse chapters occur in every state of Australia. Big in the US. Big in the UK,” he said.

“Big World Homes in some ways is Australia’s answer to this — a home-grown version.”

While the flat-pack home design may appeal to some, it may not appeal to many who have large families or prefer living in a bricks and mortar home in the suburbs. But the tiny homes are designed to be transitional housing, to bridge the gap from renting and owning.

What do you think of the flat-pack homes? Would you live in a flat-pack home?

Six Things You Don’t Want to Hear From Your Kids When in The Pool

11
kids in the pool

Heading to the pool with three kids in tow is no relaxing feat. Gone are the days of taking a book to the pool and lazing back on the lounge for some uninterrupted reading time.

It’s a lot different these days.

In fact, at times it’s anything but relaxing as you watch each child like a hawk to make sure they aren’t drowning and can be seen AT ALL TIMES.

When we went away for our week’s holiday, we had three pools to choose from which had segregated areas for the little kids to swim in. Of course our three girls didn’t want to swim in the one area, so Jacob and I would be in separate pools, supervising the swimming activities.

pool with kids

We had a few cooler days where it was warmer in the pool than out, and of course our kids would require assistance which meant either Jacob or I would have to get out of the water. We’d almost do scissors, paper, rock with our eyes, as we’d challenge each other on who would be the one to get out of the water and attend to the child who obviously didn’t care about the temperature.

It was during one of these intense moments, Jacob suggested I write a post, ‘things you don’t want to hear from your kid when you’re in the pool’. And so, here is that post, because I’m sure there are many families around Australia on holidays, where parents are hearing the same comments from their own kids while in the pool.

Six Things You Don’t Want to Hear From Your Kids When in the Pool

1. I just did a wee. Hmm is that why the water was warm a couple of seconds ago? Everyone does it. Apparently. It’s like peeing in the shower. Thank goodness for chlorine.

2. Can you take me to the toilet? Yes I can my darling, because I much prefer you to wee in the toilet than in the pool I’m swimming in.

3. Mum I need to poo. RIGHT NOW. Mummy jumps out a second time to wipe child’s bottom, trying not to think about whether the wet floor in the public bathroom is pee or pool water. Or most likely both.

4. I think I’m going to throw up. Ugh. Another visit to the toilet.

5. I’m hungry. Out of the pool again to give snacks to the youngest toddler.

pool toddler food

6. Mum, I just made my own spa! Seems farting can take one’s pool experience to the next level.

Without fail, we would have all six of these requests in one pool outing.

How do you find taking your kids to the pool? Do they say similar comments?

Busiest Month Yet

2
busiest month yet beach

September has been my busiest month yet.

The first day of the month had me presenting at the Plumbing conference, which I felt unqualified to speak at. But as the quotes say, you embrace the fear and do it anyway. I think my presentation went well.

We went home, unpacked and had to race down to Ballina for Jacob’s grandpa’s funeral. We received news of Jacob’s pa passing away the morning we headed to the plumbing conference. No matter how anticipated a death can be, it’s always a shock when it happens. The service was perfectly fitting. The girls were as behaved as could be during the service. I had to give a container full of lollies to Phoebe to keep her sitting still. But then she was on a sugar high for most of the afternoon and went a bit crazy running around the RSL during the afternoon tea. Despite my kids going crazy, it was lovely to catch up with family we haven’t seen in a long while.

The following weekend, I headed down to Problogger which was awesome.

After the conference, I raced home to help get the house ready and car packed so we could go away on a week’s holiday down at Turtle Beach Resort.

Our little week away was fantastic.

We had perfect weather and on the one day we didn’t, we headed to the new Pacific Fair where all I could afford to do was window shop.

The outdoor areas at Pacific Fair are just gorgeous. I had to stop Phoebe and Maggie from jumping into one of the fountains as they thought it as a cool pool.

We had lovely walks along the beach, a lot of swimming and going down water slides and had general fun being together as a family. There were also lots of fights and tantrums but I don’t think you can escape these even if you go on holidays.

I took a book to read which I hardly made a dent into because… well kids.

Holidays aren’t fully the same when you take little kids away. Your attention has to be on them 100% of the time especially around the pool areas.

But the change in environment and routine – with nothing to do and nowhere to be makes the family holiday an annual event we look forward to all year.

This week, Jacob has been home and Esther has had the first week of school holidays. It’s given me time to slowly catch up on writing work and get some jobs done that have been sitting on the to-do-list for most of the year. In amongst all the busyness, I’ve also had requests from readers to write about a variety of topics so stay tuned for these. I will get my butt into gear this week to write those posts to help you. x

When it comes to matters of faith, I’ve been still a little sporadic in my prayer life and reading the word. But gosh I’ve learned a few things about myself in this trying year and I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned with you.

What I do know is often the things we don’t want to do, are usually the very things we need to do. So this un-satisfaction in my spiritual life has been a good catalyst for change and action.

I’m looking forward to finishing the last quarter of the year on a high. Hopefully you are too?

How have the school holidays been treating you? When do you go on your next holiday? How are you feeling? I’d love to know. X

Five Ways to Add Soul To Your Home – By a Non-Stylist

2
five ways to add soul to your home

Like any reality TV show, The Block can rouse many emotions in me. From surprise to shock to frustration and many eye-rolling moments – I know that’s not an emotion, but it is an emoticon so I’m rolling with it!

Sometimes I agree with the judges and sometimes I wonder what styling planet they are from. Do they say stuff for the sake of having something interesting to say?

Take Sunday night for example. I loved Julia and Sasha’s room. Their use of black, blush and grey, featuring the rose gold poster bed was stunning. But the judges made the comment that Julia (who is a stylist by trade) was being out-styled by her competitors and the room needed ‘personality and soul’.

Julia and Sasha's room
Julia and Sasha’s room

Gimme a BREAK!

Total eye roll moment right there.

The apartments are styled in a way for a buyer to want to purchase it. The people who buy the apartment will put their own soul into the room. It is a guest bedroom so to say the room had no soul was a little contradictory. I do enjoy listening to what the judges have to say, but sometimes I disagree with their comments.

And I made it a point to tell Julia and Sasha how much I loved their room.

In saying that, styling and art are subjective. What may be someone’s cup of tea may not the right brew for someone else.

Of course the judges’ comments got me thinking about ways you can add ‘soul’ to a room. I’m no interior stylist and some of these tips are tongue-in-cheek. But I am a plumber and I have walked through many houses and display homes that have presented an aura simply from the way they have been presented and styled.

Here are 5 ways to add soul to your home – from a non-stylist.

1. Add ‘souls’ to your room. By souls I mean real living people. Fall in love and (get married – just what I believe) move in together and create a home. Have a family. I can guarantee your house will not be the same once you add kids to it.

ways to add soul to your home

2. If you prefer to live alone – why not add a pet ‘soul’ to your home. My preference is a dog but you may prefer cats. Pets can decrease the stress in your home and help your wellbeing.

dog adds soul to your home
Can you see our dog Bentley in our room? He matches with our bed linen. 🙂

3. Display photos of memories and people you love. I love homes that have their photos on display. A house with no photos feels too show-homey for me. Make sure you update the photos as the family grows and as memories are made. (Clearly we need to update the photo in the below image.)

photos add soul

4. Introduce live plants to your living spaces. Plants clean the air and their presence in a home can create a calming aura.

kokedamas tv cabinet

5. Mix antique and vintage heirlooms with modern décor. Some of my favourite homewares are not the pieces bought from Kmart – but the pieces that have a story behind them. Like the vase that my grandma gave me which I used to admire all the time when I went to her house. Or the black and white pictures of the generational weddings in our family history. Or the décor pieces bought from overseas travels.

I’m sure there are more ways to add soul to a room – which could make for another blog post. But I think you’re on a good start if you can add these 5 things to your home. And most of us have and do.

How do you add ‘soul’ to your home? Did you agree with the judges’ comments on Sunday night? Did you like Julia and Sasha’s room like I did?

What Have You Been Avoiding – Problogger 2016 Recap

41
problogger 2016

When I booked my ticket to attend Problogger 2016, I did so because of an announcement of one of the speakers. And of course a fear of missing out (FOMO).

To be honest, there weren’t a lot of topics that took my interest and when the said speaker was no longer speaking at the event I did consider selling my ticket.

But then one of my friends was announced as a speaker and that FOMO was pretty strong. Plus I was sharing a room with my blogging buddy Lauren from Create Bake Make and her baby, so even if the conference wasn’t going to meet my expectations, I was going to hang out with some pretty cool people who I don’t get to see often.

I’m not sure why I thought I wouldn’t get much from the speakers because I would say this year’s event was the best out of the last four conferences I’ve ever been to at Problogger. The speakers were motivating and captivating.

The atmosphere was relaxed. Bloggers I wanted to connect with were approachable. The networking opportunities were plentiful and varied. There’s also something that can be said for space amongst a crowd. I didn’t ever feel crowded. This year had an amazing amount of space.

Sitting at tables in the conference auditorium made the hugest difference in being able to engage with the speakers and other bloggers sitting at the tables.  It sort of reminded me a bit like my wedding reception where you could get up and start hugging and mingling with people at different tables. This is not an easy thing to do when you’re packed in rows. There were jugs of water and lollies on the tables to help keep focus and it allowed those with laptops to set them up easily to type notes.

Some of the key things I really wanted to get a good handle on was getting my backend of the blog sorted out. Kelly Exeter shared her nightmare story of losing her blog last year and not having a backup. Kelly recommends we back up our blogs manually at the end of each week and store a copy on a hard drive and virtually. I’ve yet to do this but it’s been put on my list for today.

The next session I attended was about SEO. I have a lot of work to do in regards to this and I’m going to have to listen to this session again.

Daniel Flynn Thank you water

Daniel Flynn, the head of Thank You blew me away with his story of how Thank You came about and the struggles they had for 2 years when launching their Thank You Water. As a result of hearing their story I want to buy everything Thank You because I love the philosophy of the brand. I also need to buy their Chapter One book which is definitely something I encourage everyone to buy and read. Check out the video on why.

Emily from Write Styling  (and also Have a Laugh on Me) gave fabulous tips on how to find topics to write for blog posts. Emily actually blew me away with her knowledge. I knew she would be good but I didn’t realise how good.

Darren Rowse’s keynote at the start of the conference and towards the end were what got me thinking the most. What have I been avoiding? Usually these are the important things to get done or make time for. I’m so glad I had last week to go away and spend time thinking about what those things that have been on my forever-to-do list but have kept being avoided because of the time and investment they will take in achieving.

take action quote

I only caught the end of Dan Norris’s presentation and he encouraged everyone to do something BIG. Duly noted Dan!

I think what made the biggest difference for me this year was I chose to only go to half of the sessions available and I didn’t feel overwhelmed with an overload of knowledge. I’ve kept my to-do list small and achievable. On my to-do-list is to listen to sessions I didn’t get to and make actionable steps as I listen to each.

Of course my Problogging experience was only amplified by the bloggers that were at the conference. Networking is by far my favourite part of conference and it is the main drawcard of attending. I tried to get a selfie or photo with everyone I met. I put together a Shoebox Timeline slideshow because there were A LOT of photos.

I also had a few embarrassing tales which I may or may not share over the coming weeks. Some things that happen on conference need to stay on conference, right?

How did you find PBEVENT this year? What have you been avoiding that could make all the difference to your life or blog if you made time to do something about it?

Are These The Tap Faucets of The Future?

3
tap faucets of the future

I love a trend and will happily jump on it if I love it enough. Copper and marble are supposedly on their way out, but terracotta, natural, and recycled materials are on their way in.

Last week as I was busily writing posts ahead of schedule (so I can go away next week), I decided to do a little research to see what trends we will see in bathrooms for 2017.

I came across these amazing tap faucets, which were created by world-renowned designers as part of a creative project, The Axor WaterDream.

Axor invited David Adjaye, Werner Aisslinger, FRONT, GamFratesi, and Jean-Marie Massaud to create a unique water spout that revealed the designer’s value of water in our personal living spaces. The faucets were to push boundaries and challenge ideas around the tap faucet.

The designers came up with very unique looking faucets that were fully functional and put on display for a week at Axor’s Milan Design Week exhibition for Salone del Mobile 2016 back in April.

In terms of functionality, I think the water pressure would annoy me, or maybe it’s something you get used to?

They are definitely a work of art – more like a water feature in your basin and a different take on the metallic mixers that are a popular choice in retail, commercial and domestic spaces.

Designer, Werner Aisslinger, used clay for his faucet combining modern and older materials to create a futuristic design with a shelf that could be used to hold soap or a plant as pictured.

Ironically terracotta, clay and rust are big trends for interiors this season.

Despite the visual appeal of these spouts, I’m not sure if they will ever come into production. I wouldn’t want to know the cost to purchase one of them.

In terms of design they are definitely different and challenge the standard taps we see in all bathrooms.

What do you think of the designs? Which one is your favourite? Or are they too arty farty for you?

Our Visit to Mazz & Co to Buy More House Plants

5
Mazz & Co nursery

In the last year or so I have been adding live plants into our house. I’ve always been a little apprehensive about having plants in the house because I often forget to water them. But I’ve persevered and so far I’ve only killed four plants. Two out of the four plants I’ve killed, weren’t really my fault, but I was blamed because I was the cause.

We had two beautiful ferns growing near our kitchen sink and Jacob decided to spray them with water, not realizing I had put lavender oil in the bottle to clean the benches. The poor ferns never recovered after that and so it has been on my to-do-list to get some new plants for our kitchen.

The other two plants I killed were also ferns that I forgot to water and then overwatered and drowned. So far my aloe vera plant has been put in their place and it’s surviving and thriving.

Our new plants from Mazz & Co. The basil plant is a little droopy…

Jacob had heard great things about a private nursery on the southside of Brisbane from his work colleagues. So last weekend, we set out to visit the nursery to see what was there and replace my ferns in the kitchen.

The nursery was called Mazz & Co and it is run by Mazz who is passionate about her plants. We had a good talk about life and plants while my girls ran around the nursery and spotted different birds in the tree branches above.

Mazz & Co Nursery

I got a botany lesson or two from Mazz about which plants were best suited for the shade and which ones required full sun. She showed me how she grew some of her succulents and even gave three to our girls to watch grow from home.

I told Mazz that I had read somewhere on the internet that gardening and working with plants was listed as one of the top 5 ways to lift one’s spirits and Mazz agreed. She believes the reason seeing plants and working with them fights against depression and anxiety is because when you buy a plant, you don’t just buy the plant for how it looks now, you buy it visualizing how it will look in the future. Plants bring about a positive outlook and this in turn helps us feel better about life and the future. That explanation was enough motivation for me to want to put plants everywhere in my house. My neighbor does this beautifully and I hope some of her style can rub off on me.

There are a few catches with having plants in the house though. Some need to get enough sunlight, they need to be watered and they may not look very leafy if you have kids around. Our poor fiddle leaf fig lost a few of its leaves because our girls decided to give it a ‘prune’. I have a selection of real and fake plants around the house so if we ever lose a real plant, we still have a fake one to keep the greenery look in our house.

KOKED Kokedamas

While at Mazz & Co, there was a section of Kokedamas, which are made by Mazz’s daughter. We bought one of these too and have it sitting on our TV cabinet.

Another invention that Mazz showed me was this automatic pot plant watering device which waters your plants to the level they need. This is perfect for fiddle leaf figs which can be temperamental on how much water they need.

A trip to the nursery is a fun way to spend a Saturday morning or afternoon, and I know we will definitely be coming back to Mazz & Co to buy more plants as we need them.

If you live in Brisbane, you need to go check out Mazz & Co: 52 Executive Drive, Park Ridge. And when you see Mazz, tell her The Plumbette told you to come visit.

Do you have many plants in your house? Do you like to visit the nursery?

10 Reasons Why You Should Consider Going to Your Industry Conference

9
industry conference

This post has been written in collaboration with the Master Plumbers Association QLD

I’m smack bang in the middle of conference fortnight. Last week I headed down to the Gold Coast for the QLD Plumbing and Gas Conference not only to present but to network and find out the big issues within the plumbing and gas industry in QLD. This week I head away to Problogger to again network with bloggers and find out ways to grow/build my blog. I also generally come away inspired and motivated to write my blog with fresh eyes.

I never understood the importance of a conference until I headed to my first Problogger Conference three years ago. From that moment I made it a priority to always attend if I could. And so far so good.

When I worked with dad I never had time for plumbing conferences and plumber meet-ups because there was always so much work to do. But I think we looked at it wrong and we could have made the time as it would have given us a much needed break from the business.

Conferences can have a positive impact on your life. Here are 10 reasons you should consider going to your industry conference – basing it on the Plumbing Conference I went to last week.

breakfast conference

1. It’s a mini escape from your life. If you don’t make time for a holiday (I strongly suggest you do have a yearly holiday for your health!), make a priority to head to your industry conference. It’s tax deductible because it’s work related and you get to stay somewhere nice for a couple of days.

2. You get to enjoy social activities you wouldn’t normally get to enjoy. When you run a business, often you can be too exhausted to attend parties or social gatherings. I know Dad and I missed a lot of parties we were invited to simply because we were too busy with work or exhausted. When you’re at a conference, the social parties are right there for you to enjoy and take part in. You can even have a drink and not worry about having to drive back to your hotel room.

3. You learn more. We should never stop learning. Heading away to a conference forces you to put yourself in an environment where you learn about what is happening in the industry. At last week’s plumbing conference, there were discussions about mental health of tradespeople, licensing and catching unlicensed works and discussions about warm water units and the control of legionnaires disease.

QBCC unlicensed trades

4. You’re inspired to keep working. I left the Plumbing and Gas Conference last week inspired and motivated to not only keep writing my blog, but also get more information about current issues in the industry so I can share what I learn and maybe offer helpful suggestions. The conference had me thinking what can I do to make a positive impact with my skills?

plumbing presentation

5. Professional development for yourself and your business. We all want to be ahead of the rest and going to a conference gives you information and new insights into ways you can run yourself and your business differently.

6. Time away from kids. As much as you love your kids, sometimes a much needed break can help you breathe for a bit. Sometimes a jolt in remembering what it’s like to not have to run around after kids gives a much needed boost to your mental health. You even get to enjoy a HOT coffee and a HOT breakfast. #winning

7. You get to network. This by far is my favourite part. I love meeting new people and making new connections and friends. I had a ball talking with many plumbers, suppliers, business managers and well anyone who decided to come and say hi to me last week. I also got selfies with these people so I could remember them.

8. You are given a platform to ask questions. If you have a burning question about your business, a conference is the best place to ask it because industry professionals are there to answer your questions. Most conferences I’ve been to have a Q&A session where a microphone is available for an audience member to make a comment or ask a question.

9. You get fed good food. Every conference I’ve gone to has always had amazing food. The RACV Royal Pines puts on a spectacular spread. I’m hoping I get to taste another one of those passionfruit curd meringue pies for morning tea at Problogger this week.

passionfruit curd meringues

10. You get to have fun. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the plumbing conference last week ( and all of my Problogger ones). I enjoy the conversations with new people, learning about new products and issues that need solving and I like to being encouraged to think differently. When you head to a conference, you get reminded why you joined that industry in the first place.

presentation

A special thank you to the MPAQ for the invitation to present at this years conference. It was a pleasure sharing my story about The Plumbette and encouraging those that attended to be positive no matter what changes happen in your life and to run with the change when it directs you do a different destination.

How Your Plumber Can Get Your Outdoor Area Ready for Spring

1
ready for spring

Today, I am presenting and attending the QLD Plumbing and Gas Conference. I’ve asked Plumber to the Rescue to guest post for me today, sharing ways your plumber can get your outdoor area ready for spring.

Floriade in Canberra, the Carnival of Flowers in Brisbane and down to local homes in Sydney, where your plumber Inner West wide can help out with sprinklers, new irrigation systems, and BBQ gas plumbing. Get gardening and see the benefits! Garden suburbs across Australia are blooming into the beautiful colours of spring.

In spring, it’s more than tempting to turn off the heating and get outside. With warmer weather comes time for a garden update. As any gardener knows, it’s not just about the plants – although you’re likely to see some gorgeous blossoms heading into September.

There’s no better time than the present to get prepared: get your BBQ ready, your outdoor plumbing in top form, and stay water wise, and you’re in for a fantastic spring garden feeling.

The BBQ Area

First off is hooking up your barbecue. Gas cylinders are inefficient and pricey; setting up a permanent connection from the appliance to the mains is relatively inexpensive and means hassle free entertaining.

It’s also going to save you in the long term, and is a safer option. Gas cylinders can degrade and need inspection approaching their expiry date. You’ll spend more calling out the plumber to investigate the gas leaks over the years than you will making the switch. And, you can rest easy without a ticking time bomb tethered to your BBQ.

Sound easier than storing gas bottles? It is. In Sydney, call a plumber Sydney trusts. Same goes for gas services across major cities. It may come as a surprise, though, that parts of Darwin and the Northern Territory are a glaring exception! Major pipelines being built as we speak, expect that to change. There’s no better time to get connected!

Outdoor Faucets

Everyone who’s been stuck with a leaky outdoor faucet knows what a pain they can be. While it’s great having access to water for hoses and sprinklers, a leaky faucet wastes more water than it’s worth.

You’re in a double bind with leaky outdoor taps. With mosquito season towards the end of spring, you don’t want water pooling, unless you enjoy being nibbled by bugs.

It’s easy enough to remove the tap and replace the washer. Turn off water to your tap and unscrew the packing nut, turning it counter-clockwise. Take out the handle and stem. Remove the washer, replace it with a new washer, and return the assembly to the original state. Viola!

Be Water Wise

It goes without saying that warmer weather means more sunlight which means more evaporation. Ever have that feeling towards summer where it seems like watering a lawn is like rolling a boulder uphill? You’re not alone. Laying down plentiful mulch in plant beds reduces your reliance on watering, by trapping moisture in the soil.

If you absolutely must turn on the sprinklers, save it for the coolest parts of the day, with the least sunlight. It’s common sense, but it will keep your bills down and help preserve precious water. It’ll also maximise the amount of water that’s actually getting into the soil and keeping that grass alive. Win-win.

There you have it. These 3 small steps towards a great spring garden will make sure your outdoor areas are ready to go for the busy entertaining season that is summer.

With just a small bit of work you can make sure you’ve got something to show off to your friends and family that you can be proud of!

When in doubt, or if you get stuck, always call your local plumber. It’s better than fumbling about for hours with a leaking tap or gas connection.

Are you ready for Spring? How is your outdoor area looking?

The Reece Grant Helps Tradies Help The Less Fortunate – Applications Open Now

6
Reece Grant 2016

This post has been written in collaboration with Reece Plumbing Australia

Have you ever been to a third world country and realized just how blessed you are to live in the country you do? I had this experience when I was 20 years old.

I had the opportunity to travel to Uganda with a team from my church to help build an orphanage through the Watoto program. It was a trip of a lifetime – not because I was finally going to Africa but because I really wanted to jolt my first world reality and learn to never take for granted the basic services that we really do take for granted in Australia.

Uganda Mission

The trip was life changing. You can read about it here. That was over 12 years ago. I still have a desire to help those who are less fortunate than myself. As a family, we sponsor a child and donate to causes we feel passionate about. I also believe in the power of prayer.

It’s always been one of my dreams to take a team of tradies to help build much needed amenities to communities that are without basic sanitation and water supplies. I still hold that dream close to my heart and I’m not sure on the timing of when that dream will come to pass. I’ve always wanted to use my skills in a way to help those in need. And there are always needs within our community and around the world that we can assist with.

One cause that I was blown away by last year was the Reece Grant. I’ve always had a positive relationship with Reece and its managers because they were always supportive of me when I did my apprenticeship and when I helped dad with his business.

Justin Reece Grant 2015

The Reece Grant awards up to $25,000 to support community water projects here and abroad.

The initiative was launched last year where three plumbers received grants to help fund international projects in East Timor, India and Philippines. I loved that these tradesmen took their children so they too could have an experience of a lifetime.

Justin Morris was one of the plumbers from 2015 who received a Reece Grant of $15,000 towards his health and sanitation project in India. The Reece customer partnered with We Can’t Wait Foundation and put the money towards the construction of toilet facilities and sanitation education in schools in Nasik, India. You can check out how Justin used his grant here.

The Reece Grant is a campaign that aims to offer financial assistance to their tradie customers who are passionate about improving the quality of life within underprivileged communities. The tradies must have a Reece plumbing account and the projects are specifically about providing clean water or improving the sanitation services in less developed communities.

The Reece Grant initiative is open again for 2016, where grants up to $25,000 are available for three tradie who are passionate about making a different through a water related project.

The grant can be funds or products to assist with the project. Now is the time to apply as entries close 30th September 2016.

‘Topless Waitress Party’ Strips Gender Equality

0
topless waitress party geocon

Many tradeswomen and MP’s have been riled up over the recent topless waitress party put on by Geocon at one of their works sites in Canberra.

The completion of the residential tower in Belconnen prompted Geocon to put on a party for their workers. The worksite closed from 3pm and the workers were entertained with women clad in g-strings and very little attire.

Geoncon apologized for the inappropriate entertainment, but not before MP’s tweeted their shock over the surfacing of images from the party.

I’m not surprised by the goings on of the party, but I am disappointed that despite the work done by many women currently working in the trades and beyond, their recommendations have fallen on death ears. A company that organizes adult entertainment at their work party is not a ‘progressive company’ and they do not offer an ‘equitable work environment’.

I get that there is a culture of men who enjoy adult entertainment. I will never judge what an individual chooses to do in their personal life, but it must be done at the individual’s discretion and NOT on a worksite. How many of those workers felt comfortable being served by women in g-strings? What would their girlfriends and wives have thought to know their tradie partners were attending a work party with nearly naked women present?

When I went to TAFE, all the boys from my class would hotfoot down to the Pinkenba Hotel for lunch and a view of the topless waitresses. It didn’t matter if these apprentices were married or had girlfriends. It was the culture and done thing when attending TAFE at Eagle Farm. I was invited on many occasions to join the boys, but it wasn’t my scene.

I know we have come a long way with women being more accepted on the worksite, but when we see old practices rear their head like this recent Geocon debacle, we’re reminded there is still a long way to go. Offering an equitable work environment is not just accepting a woman on a worksite. It’s also about setting a culture that doesn’t glorify women in a sexual way. Women matter. Who they are and what they do should be valued and their bodies and sexuality should never come into the equation.

The head manager of Geocon is said to be talking with Australian of the Year David Morrison on how to ‘overhaul workplace culture’.

The answer is quite simple. Remove the managers that thought it was a good idea to hire the female entertainers. That’s the standard that should be set. Old thinking needs to come face-to-face with dire consequences. Standards are set from the top and if you want to change a culture of a company, it starts with the leaders. Old thinking is like cancer. The best way to tackle it is to remove it altogether.

When I met David Morrison at the Migas Awards, he asked me if I would encourage my girls to work in the trades.

I hesitated because I don’t think I’d want my girls to go through what I did.

But a lot has changed since I did my apprenticeship and the worksites are becoming more gender equitable.

The benefits of women and men working together in the construction industry make for a better future for our community and our country.

Now that Geocon are in the industry spotlight, let’s see how they can positively change this around and teach all male dominant companies and industries the social importance of removing a sexualized view of women from the work culture.

Women aren’t objects to be glorified. We all have a responsibility to create a better workplace for all and inviting topless waitresses to a worksite party is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

What more can be done to change this ‘culture’ within male dominant industries? What was your response when this story surfaced?

The Block Master Ensuite Reveals 2016 – Not A Lot To Be Desired

1
the block master ensuite reveals 2016

The Block reveals were on last night and to be honest, the bathrooms that were presented were a little lackluster. You could feel the viewers weren’t feeling the love either as they voiced their opinions on Twitter.

I love a good bathroom reveal, but last night I felt like I’d seen it all before and I was really hoping to see something new and a change from the common black, white and grey colour scheme.

A neutral colour scheme is always safe when designing a bathroom for a property you’re going to sell, but sometimes it’s nice to add something different and push the boundaries. (in my opinion)

The first couple to reveal were Brisbane couple Will and Karlie. The rose gold tapware and pendants added a touch of luxury to the bathroom. Some of the teams included a double shower, but Will and Karlie’s bathroom had three shower heads.

will and karlie the block 2016

will and karlie 2016

The judges commented on the lack of lighting above the vanity and a lot of us viewers could not understand what the neon lighting was doing under the vanity.

The next couple who were annihilated were Dan and Carleen. I understood where they were going with their bathroom, but some design choices had the judges picking on their bathroom entirely. The tile choice was dissed, as was the elevated platform under the feature bath – which was to lift the bath so the occupant could look out the window. The styling was completely off as well.

dan carleen master ensuite

The towel rails were no where near the shower entry. I made a joke about a nudie run to Mr Palmer on Twitter, but he didn’t catch my fun sarcasm.

The next couple were Julia and Sasha. Their bathroom was the winning room. They had dramas with the height of their taps and spouts installed above the vanity. That stuff up made them realise how much they rely on their builder when renovating a bathroom. Overall the vanity unit was a great choice and the gold tapware was a nice touch – although not my cup of tea but added a hint towards the art déco theme.

julia and sasha

For school teachers Andy and Ben, this was their first attempt at renovating a bathroom. The judges weren’t impressed with the basins but the pendant lights were a great choice and gave much needed light above the vanity. The styling was a little off as the boys decided to give their bathroom a ‘homely’ feel by purchasing some razors and radox from their local Coles.

andy and ben

The last couple to reveal were Chris and Kim and I had high expectations with this couple after they won the pod room challenge. But their bathroom also failed to impress and was possibly the worst designed bathroom of the night. The hexagonal tiles were ‘ugly’ (as said by Shaynna) and the bathroom felt too roomy as the couple decided to install their bath outside. Much was said about the toilet roll holder too. None of it positive.

chris and kim master ensuite 2016

Despite the bathrooms not being a lot to be desired, whoever did the recruiting of the teams for this season has done really well. I am definitely excited to see the teams work to create some beautiful apartments. I don’t have any favourites and no teams have got on my nerves yet, but it’s only been week one. We’re bound to see the teams’ true colours over the next couple of weeks.

Which bathroom was your favourite last night? Did you think they lacked a bit of something too? Got a favourite team yet?

The Best Gimmicky Father’s Day Gift Ideas For The Dad That Has Everything

8
best gimmicky father's day gifts

It’s Home Improvement Thursday and usually I’d have a blogpost about plumbing or improving your home or something home related.

But today I’m going to break the rules.

Instead, I’m going to write about the eighth best day of the year and that is Father’s Day.

Why is it the eighth?

Well we have Valentine’s Day/Jacob’s birthday, Maggie’s birthday, Easter, Mother’s Day, Phoebe’s birthday, my birthday, Esther’s birthday and then Father’s Day.

It may be a different ‘number’ day to you depending on what you choose to celebrate throughout the year.

Even though I’ve done Father’s Day craft with the kids and bought cards for all the dads and granddads, I’m still yet to buy a gift for the father of my children.

I find it hard each year and often stick to what I know will get used. A DVD, chocolates, some undies and socks. I usually ask Jacob to write a list so I can refer to it when I’m out and about. Except I constantly lose it.

Most dads will expect what mums get on their special day – a sleep in, a nice breakfast, time spent with the family finished with some loving between the sheets.

I’ve done a bit of research online and found some really cool gimmicky Father’s Day gift ideas for the dad that has everything. These tend to be the hardest dads to buy for, but the easiest to please. There are a few t-shirts in the mix because dads can always do with one new t-shirt to replace their favourite daggy one they refuse to throw away!

I know my husband would love some of these gifts and hopefully the father of your children might like one or two of these gift ideas too.

  1. Custom BBQ Branding Iron $24.99
  2. Big Kid Little Kid T-shirt Set $108.00

  6. Fun Guy Mug $33.00
  7. Peter Alexander Men’s Ruffle Tuxedo Tee $49.95*
  8. Gun Alarm Clock $49.99

40 Ways Your House Will Change Once You Have Kids

39
40 ways children change your house

Kids. They are amazing creatures whom you love to the moon and back, but they can frustrate the heck out of you. And none of this frustration is EVER put as a warning in the parenting books. What To Expect When You’re Expecting and Knocked Up certainly warned me what kids would do to my body, but they didn’t forewarn me what they’d get up to in my house.

Kids break many things. They shred books, empty shelves and drawers; Picasso walls and break valuables with no regard of the consequences. So since the books decided to keep this vital information secret from new and upcoming parents, I thought I’d share 40 ways your house will change once you have kids – and I’m talking kids that can walk. The newborn stage is delightful compared to a toddler on a rampage, because as soon as they are on their feet, your house and its contents will not be safe.

40 Ways Your House Will Change Once You Have Kids

1. Your toilet floor will never be the same again. It will be the catching ground for drips, overflows and no-aim flows with nowhere to go which you will step on with bare feet the next time you need to go.

2. The walls are like a white canvas for your child. Even if they are painted another colour, they will still want to draw on them.

3. Drawers will be emptied time and time again.

empty drawers

4. As will shelves. Those colour coded book shelves have no chance with your child. All they see is a rainbow they need to grab and mess up.

5. Leaves will be plucked off indoor plants. You may even find ‘treasures’ buried in the pots.

6. Windows will be smeared constantly with boogers, dirty hands and blowfish kisses.

7. Wooden floors will be scratched with those rolling dog toys.

house change

8. Dents will be made into the corners of walls because sometimes kids like to fly their walking dog rather than walk and roll it.

9. Walls will be smeared with hand prints. What makes the prints is totally up to your child but some choices in our house hold have been chocolate, vegemite and poo. And yes, we have white walls.

10. Rugs and carpet will get mushed with playdough.

11. Or vomit. Kids aren’t adult enough to get themselves to a toilet, but will vomit over the hardest floor surface to clean.

12. Homewares become play things. No matter how much you warn them not to touch. One day, when you’re not watching, they will just ‘have a look’ at your prized geometric vase. And that look will unfortunately smash it.

13. Make-up becomes your kids new finger paint and crayons. Your carpet, your bathroom floors and walls will be painted with it.

14. No matter how organized you keep the kids bedrooms and playroom, your kids will have their own way of organisation. They will chuck all of the things in the one tidy drawer and be done with organising.

toys messed up

15. Freshly vacuumed floors will be covered in crumbs/glitter/bark from the garden within 5 minutes. It may be sooner.

16. Same goes for freshly washed floors. Wet feet will smear your beautifully cleaned floors. What your floors will be smeared with will again be determined by what your child has walked through and if they have come from the toilet… well you may need to investigate point number 1.

17. No such thing as child-free zones in your house. Even if you turn into the Beast and exclaim ‘It’s Forbidden’ your kids will do a Belle and enter anyway.

18. Toilets will continually be blocked with too much paper or toys the kids no longer want. Always have gloves on hand and a plunger.

blocked toilet

19. So will your grates and your ORG outside because the kids like to fill it with rocks.

20. Your sofas will hide and hold as much food as the high chair within its crevices. It will also act as a trampoline and fighting ring for siblings.

There is enough food hiding in the crevice of that couch to feed 3 children. Guaranteed.
There is enough food hiding in the crevice of that couch to feed 3 children. Guaranteed.

21. The TV will be dominated by ABC 4 Kids even though you own the control. You also own your sanity too.

22. Lights will be flicked on and off like a rave. Expect a large electricity bill.

23. Bath water never stays contained in the bath. If it stays in the bathroom your kids have behaved considerably.

24. Every room in the house will have some sort of toy. I’m warning you that Lego and Shopkins multiply and breed like rabbits.

25. The mirrors will always be splashed with toothpaste water from toothbrushes or freshly washed hands. At least you know your kids have kept up their hygiene regime if the mirror is a splatter of mess.

26. The dishwasher will always be full and overflowing.

27. The washing baskets will be full and overflowing.

28. Sadly the same can’t be said for the pantry and fridge. Food supplies will diminish dramatically.

pantry monster

29. Tablecloths will get stained. Opt for plastic ones.

30. Rubbish won’t always be placed in the bin. Any small crevices or hiding spots in the living room, make the perfect place to put rubbish.

31. There will be toys and random food under the TV cabinet and under the chairs and sofas. You will be surprised by what you find growing there. Dogs make good Robovacs.

food on the floor

32. All types of paper in your home are now no longer safe. That’s toilet paper, paper towel and paper in the printer or shredder. Used for drawing, creating blockages or just unraveled… because it’s fun.

messy paper

33. Mattresses will soak up wee, drinks and whatever wet toy your kid decides to take to bed with them.

34. They will put stickers EVERYWHERE. On furniture, on walls… on the kitchen bench. And they can stick like poop to a blanket if you leave them too soon. (HOT Tip – Eucalyptus oil gets the buggers off)

stickers on kitchen bench

But then…. Even though your house and wares will never be the same, kids make your home the home it is.

35. Your kids will fill your home with beautiful sounds like singing and laughter.

36. Their early morning cuddles and smiles make waking up in your home a great place to wake up in.

37. Their creative play makes for a fun environment in the home.

38. Their snuggles on the couch while watching TV will keep you warmer than that designer throw rug draped on the end of the chair.

Kids make the best throw rugs

39. Their footsteps will always make your heart skip a beat. (this could be good or bad reasons, you decide!)

40. Their presence makes a home a  family home, adding a new dynamic and atmosphere that no homeware or piece of furniture could create.

How has your home changed since you’ve had kids?

You Looked Different the Moment I Saw You

1
you looked different

Last Friday, I got lost in my thoughts as I pushed the pram and walked Esther to school.

We were running late. Again.

I am now known for my lateness at school because other mums will jibe me with being consistent (because I’m late) or expressions of shock and surprise when I’m early or on time.

Or I will be running really really late like I was last Friday and have one mum roll her eyes at me (in fun) that I was such a bad mum. Glad she doesn’t follow me on Instagram because she’d have found out I fed my younger two girls chips and a lollypop for breakfast-on-the-run. #mummyfail

Ugh! I will get myself together.

I told myself last week I would be more punctual. And then our new Kmart copper clock decided to slow down and tell the time 20 minutes too slow.

Anyway, as I was walking Esther to school last Friday, I got lost thinking about people I admired. They are specifically pastors at my church and I hold them in high esteem because they have their heart in the right place when it comes to people. I thought about why I admired them and had hoped that people would view me in the same light.

I then wondered if people saw me as someone who they could rely on and trust? Someone who they could come to if they were in need or needed a listening ear? Did I make myself available for others?

Right now I’d say I probably don’t look like the person I’d like to be. But thank goodness I’ve got time to change things around. And so I prayed that God would in fact teach me to slow down and to be ever mindful of others around me and I prayed that my life would be an example for others to live just as Jesus’s life was (and still is) an example to me.

I felt a bit disappointed in myself with the way I had let my own burdens become a priority in my life and I hadn’t spent more time looking out for others.

I was unhappy that I was known as the late mum. I’ve always been a punctual person. But I am also one of those people with a long to-do-list and will cram as many jobs in the time she has before she has to leave which incidentally makes me late – but at least I feel better that I got one or two jobs finished before leaving.

After I dropped Esther to class and as I walked down the path to go home, a lady who I’ve occasionally bumped into at school smiled and stopped to talk to me.

The first question out of her mouth before she said Hi was, ‘What church do you go to?’

I was surprised. How did she know I went to church when I didn’t even know her?

Funnily enough, she attended a local Baptist church and because I was friends with some of the people from that church on Facebook, she put two and two together and assumed I was also a church goer.

I told her what church I went to and she blew me away with what she said next.

“I knew you were a Christian the moment I saw you come to this school. There was something different about you.” She may have said something about the way I look at people and smile – but I can’t quite remember her exact wording because I was shocked with the irony of what I had been thinking about that morning and what she had just admitted.

How ironic I was thinking I wanted to look like someone who was different, and here was a lady whom I barely knew, confirming what I had thought I wasn’t.

For me, I’m not interested in looking different because I want to stand out. I want to be known as someone who makes the time for other people and someone who makes other people’s lives better. I can’t be this person by just being Bec. I can only be this person if I allow God’s spirit to live in me.

I admitted to this lovely mum that I’m not the perfect Christian but was greatly encouraged by what she told me.

And I’m still amazed with the conversation as I type about it now.

So this week’s challenge is to reflect on the type of person you want to be and pray for help in being that person to others. Most likely you are already that person. And if you’re not, thank goodness we have time to pray and change.

Ever been told you look different? Ever had a compliment that’s knocked you back because you’ve never seen yourself in that light?

Retractable Mixer Taps – Why They’re a Popular Tap For The Kitchen

Choosing the right kitchen mixer can be a daunting task when there are so many to choose from. Some clients prefer a standard, no fuss kitchen mixer that is easy to clean, does the job and is cheap on the budget.

But as people become more accustomed to cooking at home and with the kitchen now becoming the family hub of the home, there has been a push towards modern styling and cutting edge design when it comes to the appliances and taps in the kitchen.

One way to make your kitchen stand out is to have a designer mixer. The retractable mixer is definitely becoming a more popular style of kitchen mixer as there are many benefits for its use in the kitchen.

Not only is the mixer grand to look at, it is also practical.

Retractable mixers can easily fill buckets and pots of water. The handle can rinse food and veggies, providing a dual spray depending on the application.

Cleaning becomes more efficient and a lot easier with the retractable mixer as the spout can reach all areas of the sink and it can easily rinse and wash dishes and larger pots and pans that can be hard to rinse with a standard kitchen mixer.

Retractable sink mixers are an expensive purchase for a kitchen tap. Most basic retractable mixers start from $500.

It’s also important to choose a retractable mixer that isn’t too big for your kitchen sink and space.

The coil style retractable mixers can be hard to clean and over time it does age with watermarks. These mixers are more suited to commercial kitchens, but some people like the look of these mixers and will install them in their home.

If you’re looking for a retractable mixer without the coil, here are some styles ranging from the budget friendly to the high end of retractable mixers.

12 Reasons Why Being a Bad Mum Makes Me a Good Mum

14
bad mum good mum

On the weekend I headed to see the movie Bad Moms with a group of school mums who I just love hanging out with and getting to know.

Let’s be honest, there was bad language and themes that were definitely for adult eyes only in the movie.

But the movie pointed out something that all of us mums need to know – we don’t really have it all together no matter what type of façade we like to put across. We all wonder if we are doing a great job and measure how we’re doing by comparing ourselves to each other. Or we try and live up to a ridiculous expectation that we can do it all.

No matter how organized and together we look on the outside, on the inside we’re wondering if we’re doing the right thing by our kids. Sometimes we just don’t have it altogether the way we’d like to be perceived. I really loved the movie and think every mum should go to see it.

As I was reflecting over the weekend about the movie and my realities over this past year, I thought about all the bad things I do as a mum that I know I could do way better at. So I thought I’d share why being a bad mum makes me a good mum. Because I know I’m a good a mum, I just sometimes don’t do a lot of things right.

12 Reasons Why Being a Bad Mum Makes Me a Good Mum

1. Sometimes I bribe my kids to get them to do what I want. I’m a good mum for making the bribe a good deal.

2. I will escape to my office, or go out with girlfriends over witching hour hell which is the dinner, bath and bed routine. After a long day with the kids, I sometimes have little energy battling kids that won’t eat their dinner because they don’t like it and fight in the bath over the same toy to finally find an excuse not to go to bed. Time out for me means I can be a better mum the next day.

3. I will eat all the chocolate during nap times. This makes me a good mum because it removes the temptation for my kids to eat junk food.

4. I take my kids to the park so I’m doing something fun with them, but really I just want ten minutes of peace so I can respond to my emails and maybe read a blog or two that will help me get through my day.

why being a bad mum makes me a good mum

5. My kids have every McDonalds Happy Meal toy from the last couple of years because I sometimes I can’t be bothered cooking. We donate these toys to charity. My kids eat, needy kids get toys. It’s a win win all round.

6. I’m often rushing (and running late) to school drop off or church. I don’t like running late, and I do want to raise my kids to be punctual, but I also want them to know they can live life to the full and use their time wisely before heading out the door.

7. My eldest daughter got a hole in her baby tooth because she drank too much watered down juice when she was little. (In my defence, she was a very fussy eater and so my logic was at least the juice would fill her if food didn’t!) I was a bad mum for letting her drink more juice than she should have. I’m a good mum because I got the dentist to tell her why she could no longer drink juice and I now save $4.00 a week by not buying apple juice in my weekly shop. As a result her younger sisters rarely drink it and have great teeth.

8. Sometimes the book that is read on Playschool is the only reading my younger girls get in the day. I’m a bad mum because some days, I don’t get time to read books to my younger girls like I did with my eldest. I’m a good mum because I’ve got the TV on standby.

watching tv

9. My kids are good with screens. They know how to take photos, speak on snapchat and they can work their way around the apps on my iPhone and iPad. I’m a good mum because they’re learning vital skills for when they’re at school because by the time they are at school, all their learning will be done on screens. (which as a side note I’m sad about and I find it ironic that we get told as parents to limit our kids screen time at home, when the education system is looking at increasing screen time learning. What the heck?!)

10. I’m sometimes a bit lax about rules. Sometimes I will let the kids play on the furniture because it’s a distraction I don’t have to provide. If they hurt themselves they will learn not to do it again. I sometimes let my girls fight so they can learn how to compromise. I also let them play with their food because sometimes their shenanigans are just too funny and they provide potential photo opportunities for their 21st.

11. I swear. More than I have as a plumber. It’s something I’m working on. But swearing gets the emotion out and doesn’t let me bottle it in. The bad part about this is that sometimes it is within ears reach of my girls. But I have taught my girls that bad language is bad and my girls aren’t afraid to pull me up on it. Despite being a bad mum, I’ve used this flaw to teach my kids what not to do which is what every good mum should do.

12. I sometimes hurt my kids without meaning to… like shutting the car door on their fingers. There is no good mum in this scenario other than apologizing and comforting my kids and hoping they don’t reciprocate and slam the door on me when they are teenagers. #wishfulthinking

Partying Shopkins Style

8
shopkins party

On Saturday I had 25 kids attend Esther’s 6th Birthday and the theme was Shopkins. After writing for a party website and always discovering new themes each week to write about, I knew the moment I saw a Shopkins party, my Esther would want it for her own birthday.

Off to work I did by creating the invitations and stationery on PicMonkey. The guillotine got a workout as I cut out all 25 invitations by hand. Everyone RSVP’d to the party so last week I was baking a storm – mars bar slice, clinker slice, Shopkins cupcakes (packs available from Woolworths), and jelly cups with faces. Of course the kids didn’t really notice the details which is good to remember for future parties.

I bought the tablecloths, napkins and plates from Big W and opted to use toys we owned to create the table décor. The balloons were also from Big W and were $8 per bunch.

The party favours I made myself. You can buy the plastic bags from the party section at Woolworths. The pack has 30 cellophane bags for a couple of dollars. I made the labels through PicMonkey and stapled them to the bags. Inside each party favour bag was 1 Shopkins figurine, a lollypop and a bag of Shopkins Cookies which you can buy in multipacks from Big W.

I outsourced the cake to Jacob’s cousin who did a sensational job. No way could I have made it. It tasted delicious too.

The party went really well. My girls had a ball and most of all Esther enjoyed celebrating her birthday with her friends.

Of course we are completely Shopkinsed out because we got a lot of Shopkins themed presents, but Esther was so appreciative of the gifts and the effort I went to in creating the party for her.

‘This is the best party ever!’ has been said a few times from my girls, and it was said again on Saturday. The joy on Esther’s face just shows how much she loved her party and those that celebrated with her.

How to do a Facebook Live Video With Little Kids

29
facebook live video with little kids

Last Tuesday was a busy day for me. I felt a bit like the main character from that movie “I don’t know how she does it” because I was heading from one place to the next to the next, with kids-in-tow. Really a typical day in the life of a mum.

It was Esther’s birthday last Tuesday so I was up early to get some writing work done before presents could be given and unwrapped. I’d baked, iced and decorated the cupcakes for her class the night before so I’d have more time in the morning to get ready.

My day started with dropping my husband to work, then dropping Esther to school (a little late) and delivering the cupcakes to her classroom, wrangling Maggie and Phoebe from the school playground, racing to Kindy orientation for Maggie next year, messaging my editor for Mumtastic on access to the Facebook page to do my Facebook live video at the park, racing home to give the younger kids morning tea, a nappy change and wee stop, before driving to our local park to do my 10 minute Facebook live post.

Maggie at Kindy
Maggie at Kindy Orientation.

We have three parks to choose from in our suburb and the park that we would normally go to wasn’t going to work for the game I was going to show online.

After packing the kids into the car, I re-explained to Maggie that we were going to do a video and she was going to be the star and would it be ok if mummy played a fun game in the park with her? Maggie was all smiles about the video and she’s used to me taking pictures and videos of her for memory’s sake. (she also likes to be the centre of attention when she can)

So, I drive to the top park in our suburb and Maggie throws a tanty telling me she didn’t want to go to this park, she wanted to go to the park in the middle of our suburb. I oblige because I need her to be happy for the live video.

I drive to the middle park and it is all sectioned off for construction.

Me: (curse) No can do Maggie. (I look at the time – I have to be on in 5 minutes!) We’re going to our normal park.

Maggie: No. I don’t want to go to our green park.

Me: (grit my teeth and think about what Dooce said at Problogger last year!) Ok, let’s head back to the top park.

So I drive to the top park, get the kids out of their car seats, chuck their hats on and remember to put a hat on my own head because sun safety is important!

I direct Maggie to the ‘little kids’ section of the park which has the most colours (crucial for the Facebook Live video)

Maggie kicks her foot with a frown on her face.

‘I don’t want to play over there mummy. And I don’t want to do a video.’

Me: (crying inside, then pray and think on my feet on how to get my darling three-year-old to smile and be happy for the live video. Slightly hyperventilating as I have to start the video in 2 minutes. Quickly check that I have WIFI – yep! Thank the Lord for good internet connection!)

I kneel down to Maggie and I look into her eyes and tell her that we had talked about doing the video and now that we are at the park we have to do it in a couple of minutes time.

I then do what most parents would have done in my situation…

Succumb to the bribe.

I bribe my three year old with ice cream for lunch if she helps me with my video.

Maggie is all smiles and runs to the playground to make herself sick in a yellow bucket chair that goes round and round and round. Phoebe is already going up and down the slide.

The Facebook live video went well. Maggie was a superstar and did way better than I thought! I had no idea where Phoebe was during the filming of the video. And then out of the corner of my eye I saw her race into the public toilets and knew that was my signal to wrap up the live video. I rescued her before she decided to add more toilet paper to an unflushed toilet. (eww)

I was a little relieved the video went ok. There were so many variables at play to get the video done, but I did it and of course, I carried out my end of the deal by treating the girls to ice cream for lunch. Although our first choice Cold-Rock was closed, Baskin Robbins was open for the win. A fifty cent cone from McDonalds wasn’t going to suffice.
