Christmas Gift Ideas for Primary School Aged Kids

Christmas gift ideas 2017

If you have to buy gifts for kids that are in primary school, I’ve compiled some Christmas Gift ideas for Primary School Kids.

Primary school aged kids are my second favourite group to buy for. Generally, they know exactly what they want for Christmas and can tell you what it is they want.

But just because they want it, doesn’t mean they will play with it. Take for example the $100 unicorn I bought for Esther 2 years ago. It sits pretty, displayed in her room. It’s supposed to act like a live Unicorn, yet Esther hardly plays with it.  I’m hoping if we keep it till she’s an adult, it will sell for a couple of grand. I wish I kept all my toys from my childhood. My mortgage would have been paid off by now.

Anyway, I digress! If you have to buy for kids that are in early to middle primary school, I’ve brainstormed some ideas that can work for this age group.

• purse/wallet as usually this is the age when they start to earn pocket money
• A bag to carry their own stuff (think satchel, cross over bag or backpack)
• Craft or building toys like Lego, as this engages their brain and keeps them occupied.
• Books – stories about farts and poo are popular with this age.
• Pencils and felt pens
• Slime or putty
• Accessories like earrings, necklaces and bracelets
• Musical instrument
• Clock for their room

I’ve put together this guide, with some online ideas to help you. My eldest would be happy with any of these gifts and she’s 7. I may have a few already for her Santa Stocking.

Make a Gingerbread Holly Wreath Using a Gingerbread Man Cookie Cutter

Gingerbread Holly Wreath Food Idea

I’m not exactly sure if the title of my post is politically correct? But I’m still going to run with it because it explains exactly how I made this Gingerbread Holly Wreath.

And before you think I’ve turned into a food blogger… I haven’t. I just wanted to share this cool idea with you. Sometimes I have more ideas than time. But yesterday, I gave this a go, and I was really happy with the results. So much so I had to share it with you!

I’m sure you’ve all seen how you can turn a gingerbread man upside down to create reindeer heads? If you haven’t, my friend Lauren from Create Bake Make shows you how on this post. And here are the ‘one-eyed boobie monsters’ my Maggie thought I had made yesterday.

Well here I’m going to show you how to create holly and then place it together to make a Gingerbread Holly Wreath.

I thought up this idea while looking through Pinterest for food wreath ideas. There are many gingerbread wreaths, but none that use the gingerbread man shape to create holly. And when you look at the gingerbread man/woman shape – it certainly can be turned into holly.

I’m always looking for easy and creative biscuit decorating ideas for when I have to take a plate to share, and this Gingerbread Holly Wreath is my most proudest creation yet.

gingerbread wreath

When I make gingerbread, I use a Donna Hay recipe, but I don’t add the baking soda. I find it makes the gingerbread taste bitter. With this recipe, I added a few drops of Ginger Essential Oil to give it an extra ginger taste.

The most important ingredients when decorating the gingerbread is using the icing pens and Jaffas. It’s then a matter of using my excellent caulking skills (who knew applying silicone could also be to my advantage in the kitchen?!) to draw on the leaves where the gingerbread arms and legs would be.

Once all the gingerbread men have been decorated into holly, you can then place each holly around a white plate to create a wreath. To prevent the wreath from sliding off the plate, use some of the icing to stick the gingerbread to the plate.

Not only does this Gingerbread Holly Wreath look gorgeous, it tastes delicious too.

It certainly seems we can’t get enough gingerbread in our household. I can’t wait to replicate this for next week’s events.

The Start of Christmas Craziness

0
Christmas Craziness

The Christmas craziness has certainly not waned in our household. It’s prevented me from my regular blog posting over the last month or so. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though with nothing really booked from mid-December on. That may change though.

It’s official that Maggie has 3 days left of Kindy and Esther has two weeks left of school. The end of term is coming near, and I think all of us are looking forward to some sleep ins and relaxing from all the end of year events that have made November a very busy month.

Maggie and Phoebe riding a Reindeer

I think I’ve worked out why this time of year has been very busy for us. It’s because we have three kids going to three different places (school, kindy and daycare) and this year I volunteered my time to help out at church and Kindy, which has resulted in more end of year events to attend to.

There are still more events to come, and I’m bracing for high emotions next week when we have Christmas concerts and graduations. I get a little emotional on the last day of Kindy. I need to remind myself to pack some tissues. Can’t believe my Maggie heads to school next year.

The Plumbette's Christmas Tree

We’ve had our tree up for a week and a bit now. One rainy weekend, the kids were going crazy inside, so Jacob got them to work by putting the tree up and decorating it. It’s the first time we haven’t had to put the pet enclosure around it because the girls are old enough not to touch the decorations, and we have no Bentley to take the baubles off the tree like apples. It’s a happy sad moment. We still miss our Bentley. But his portrait is still watching over our tree.

On Saturday, Jacob and I were all hands on deck to assist with Maggie’s Kindy’s Garden Party – which is a major fundraiser and a great way to celebrate the Kindy year. The girls had a ball and I had a hand in doing face painting. There were a few sad looking Spidermans because of my doing. I’m sure with more practice, I will get better.

Phoebe with her face painted

One funny thing that happened at the garden party, was Phoebe being ushered onto the deck to perform with the rest of the Kindy kids. I don’t know if the teacher realised it was Phoebe and not Maggie being ushered on the stage. Maggie was sitting on the other side. Maggie and Phoebe are looking so alike these days. I’ve even had strangers ask if they are twins. Phoebe took it in her stride and was all for performing though – even though she had no clue what she was singing. Some of us mums who realised Phoebe wasn’t meant to be on stage, couldn’t stop giggling.

Maggie and Phoebe at Kindy Garden Party

As a result of all our events, we’ve had colds and sinus issues. Thank goodness for essential oils to help blocked noses and sinus headaches. On that note, look out for a post this week as I have another diffuser giveaway in time for Christmas.

I can’t believe we’re a few days away from the 1st of December. Holidays are literally around the corner. It’s also a time where our bodies seem to be susceptible to catching sicknesses. So many people are coming down with colds and gastro because of end of year exhaustion. It’s easy to catch with many people out and about too at Christmas. I’m definitely being more proactive in eating more veggies and salads to prevent getting sick again. I’m also hoping to avoid the shops during Christmas, by having all my Christmas shopping done before 1st December! Still have a few things yet to purchase.

Christmas display with girlsThe craziest part of getting to this time of year, is realising how fast your children have grown throughout the year. I look at my girls and think how crazy it was only a few years ago when we had babies and toddlers. I’m glad to be in the season we are in.

How has November been for you? How do you cope with the Christmas Craziness in your household? Are you amazed at how much your children have grown this year?

Gingerbread Ice Cream Sandwiches

3

When Esther was 6 months old, we headed to the Buderim Ginger Factory. We did a tour and had taste testings and finished our day with an ice cream in a cone.

Jacob got a scoop of the gingerbread ice cream, and we haven’t been able to find an ice cream like it since. Till now. Coles have brought out their very own Gingerbread Ice cream and it is delicious.

When Coles asked me to share a picture of their latest product on Instagram, I was like ‘sure’ and bought 4 tubs of the stuff.

The flavour is amazing and tastes just like gingerbread. It also has a gingerbread swirl, which is a lovely surprise at first bite.

After buying 4 tubs of the ice cream, I came up with this cool dessert idea that everyone in the family will love. Gingerbread Ice Cream Sandwiches.

gingerbread ice cream sandwiches pin the plumbette

After I made these, my girls demolished them. Those gingerbreads had no chance of running away from my girls. And after trying one myself, I know why they gobbled them up so quick. They are full of flavour and a fun way to eat gingerbread and the ice cream together.

This dessert is so easy, even those of us that aren’t the best in the kitchen, will not fail. Especially if you buy the gingerbread pre-made from Coles.

gingerbread ice cream sandwiches recipe

Twenty cents from each sale of the gingerbread is donated to charity. They are the perfect size for a decent ice cream sandwich. You only need two ingredients, and some space in the freezer, to freeze these for when you wish to serve them.

What you need

1 Tub of Coles Gingerbread Ice Cream

6 Gingerbreads

1 Paddle

2 Pieces of baking paper

1 knife

Instructions

1. Scoop out some of the ice cream and use the paddle to flatten it out between the baking sheets.

2. Use a knife to spread the Gingerbread ice cream between the gingerbread. Use the knife to remove excess ice cream around the edges.

3. Wrap the gingerbread in cling wrap and place in the freezer for at least an hour or more.

4. Remove for the freezer, and unwrap just before serving.

The gingerbread ice cream is available in all Coles supermarkets for $4. You’ll want to have a tub or two in your freezer for Christmas.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Toddlers and Pre-School Kids

Christmas gift ideas 2017

If there was a group of people that were easy to buy gifts for, I reckon it would have to be toddlers and the pre-school aged kids. The toys and educational activities are in abundance of supply.

I find toddler aged kids the most fun to buy for. It’s when kids really discover their love for play and can be introduced to an array of toys like Duplo, water painting and puzzles.

When I reflect on the gifts that received the most attention from my girls – and even now at the ages of 3 and 4, the Duplo and Tea Party sets have been the best buys. Also any wooden food toys that can be used in imaginative play. Think wooden ice creams and wooden food of any kind that is a lot more durable than plastic.  With that in mind, I’ve compiled Christmas gift ideas for toddlers and pre-school kids – based on what has been a big hit in our household.

A mix of practical and fun gifts are a great idea for this age group. For practical gifts think a library bag or an umbrella and raincoat – items mums don’t realise their cherub needs  until their first expedition to the library or it rains and they have nothing to go out in the rain! For fun gifts, think blocks or toys that have an educational element to them rather than play noise just for the fun of it. There are some handmade gifts in this collection which will support local businesses as well – the wooden blocks (1)  and an original, personalised unicorn watercolour art (5). My favourite picks would be the iconic Ice Cream set and Biscuit set, based on Iconic Aussie Treats.

1. Beeimpish 40 Handmade Wooden Blocks with Designer Bag $54

2. Tiger Tribe Rainbow Tea Set $39.95

3. Melissa and Doug Wooden Shape Sorting Clock  $25.99

4. Penny Scallan Library Bag (comes in other colours and patterns) $29.95

5. Timber and Told Customised Unicorn Watercolour $45

6. Melissa and Doug On the Go Safari Water Painting Book $9.99

7. Make Me Iconic Wooden Ice Creams Play Set $42.95

8. Lego Duplo Pizzeria $32.49

9. Kids Emoji Umbrella $14.00

How Illegal Plumbing is Caught Out

2
illegal plumbing caught out the plumbette

Illegal plumbing is a big issue, and it just doesn’t affect plumbers, it affects hard working home owners and renters. The cost to resolve can be in the thousands of dollars. Illegal plumbing is being caught out more often than not and I’m going to share a recent example of this. I can’t stress enough the importance of using a licensed plumber, but also ensuring any plumbing works installed at your home is lodged to your local authority/council.

I’ve always tried to be a rule abider. I’m that girl that will rarely colour out of the lines. I’ve always believed rules and laws have been put in place for safety. The odd times when I’ve broken the rules, it’s been because I either haven’t known about the rules OR I’ve broken them because no one will ever find out. (I can’t believe I confessed that. But yes it is true. I am a flawed human – I haven’t done it very often though because I’m generally a rule abider.)

The reason why a lot of illegal plumbing takes place is because it’s assumed no one will ever find out. And sometimes the risk can pay off… or does it?

I’m going to share with you a situation that happened to friends of mine and how it cost them thousands of dollars to rectify. But it could have cost them tens of thousands of dollars if they didn’t fix the issue immediately.

Around six months ago, I had the husband of my friend call me to say he had a bit of a plumbing situation. Whenever I get calls like these, I hold my breath. I can’t always help. But in this situation, I was able to assist where I could.

My friend had received a notice from the council to rectify illegal plumbing that had been identified at a property they owned, which they were currently renting out. The illegal plumbing had to be rectified within 48 hours.

how illegal plumbing is caught out

How did the illegal plumbing get found out?

The illegal plumbing was identified by another plumber, but via another property.

A few houses down the street from my friends’ house, another house was being renovated. The plumber at this property was connecting down pipes to the storm water drain on the street. When he cut into the storm water, he noticed grey water was flowing down the storm water. The plumber could immediately identify a sink waste had been connected to the storm water as there were food scraps, tea leaves and etc flowing down the storm water. This type of waste water is typical from a sink. The plumber did the right thing by notifying the council that a possible sink waste had been connected to the storm water. A sink should ALWAYS be connected to a sewer.

The council has a team that investigates illegal plumbing, which is where my friend and the current Qld Female Plumbing Ambassador, Carlie Low works. Carlie was the plumbing inspector who located the illegal plumbing. She was the one to hand out a notice to my friend, which gave him 48 hours to get a plumber to disconnect the existing sink waste and connect it to the sewer.

But Carlie’s investigation didn’t just find that the sink waste had been hooked up to the storm water. Carlie found plumbing fixtures had been installed on the ground floor of the property that had never been lodged to council. My friend now had the additional problem of finding the original plumber who had installed the bathroom and sink (as it was installed by the previous owners), and a Form 4 had to be submitted. A Form 4 is a plumbing form that is lodged by a plumber, where they will take responsibility for all unauthorized work and any work that is brought into compliance.

The original plumber was not known, as the plumbing work had been done before my friends acquired the house. I rang Carlie to see if we could firstly sort out the issue with the sink waste and then work out a plan of attack on getting the rest of the plumbing into compliance.

The solution

I was able to speak to Carlie and she was able to tell me that it would be difficult to connect the sink waste to the sewer without a bit of excavation and drainage work. I suggested I get a plumber to disconnect the sink and cap it off. Carlie was happy with this and asked to be called within 48 hours to inspect this work. The next issue was getting a plumber on a short notice, to do the job. We had already lost 24 hours sorting out what to do.

In the end, the sink got disconnected and the renters were told to use the basin as their sink, which was a bit of an inconvenience for them. The basin, thankfully, was connected to the sewer.

My friend then got plumbers in to look at the unauthorized work and asked them to sign a form 4 to lodge to the council to bring the unauthorized plumbing work into compliance. But the plumbers refused to sign the form because it wasn’t their work and they couldn’t guarantee it had been installed correctly. In the end my friend had to organise a plumber to re do the plumbing to the fixtures that had never been lodged to council. It cost just under $8,000 to fix.

The lesson

My friend was understandably freaked out to get a notification from the council about the illegal plumbing. But he was willing to do what needed to be done to rectify the issue.

No one will know who the original plumber was… or if it even was a plumber that did the original work. But the cost was an unexpected expense and headache for my friends. If they had been unwilling to rectify the issue quickly, it could have escalated for a Show Cause Notice and a fine after a certain amount of time.

Unfortunately, it’s not fair when illegal plumbing has taken place, without one knowing, but there are things you can do to protect yourself from this unexpected circumstance.

1. When purchasing a new property, ensure your solicitor makes the necessary checks that the plumbing to your purchased property has been notified to council. So many houses have renovated bathrooms, an additional ensuite or an added butler’s pantry with a kitchen sink. Ensure the plumbing to these areas have been notified to council.

2. If you’re selling a house, ensure the plumber you engaged to do any renovations notified the council. If a certificate or evidence of a form 4 hasn’t been lodged to council, consider the sale or purchase of the house to be put on hold until the approval has been produced.

3. Illegal plumbing will be found out one way or another. If you are a licensed plumber and come across an illegal plumbing installations, notify the council or the authority in your area so they can investigate.

4. Don’t brag on Facebook or Instagram how your ‘DIY hubby’ has installed your newly renovated bathroom. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) will be onto that post like a hawk. And if the QBCC don’t find it, a licensed plumber will and will notify them that your DIY hubby has done the wrong thing.

There are reasons why plumbing is a licensed trade and why certain forms need to be lodged to council. With this particular scenario, I wonder how many other sink wastes have been connected to storm water instead of the sewer. This is why we have an investigation team that look into complaints from residents and plumbers who come across such incidents.

It’s important to remember illegal plumbing will be found out. It’s just a matter of when and who has to deal with it.

Acknowledge the Good in Others: It Reflects the Good in you

Acknowledge the Good in Others: It Reflects the Good in you

Over the last month or so I have been s l o w l y going through our house and ridding it of clutter we no longer need. We’re out of the baby stage and it’s quite cleansing removing items we no longer need. But it’s such a long process. I get motivated to go through all the cupboards and lose motivation while going through the things, because it becomes a bigger job than I anticipated. I’ve pushed through though. I can’t handle having a job half done.

Anyway, the decluttered items have either been donated to good will or sold on Facebook Marketplace. So far it’s gone ok. I’ve had some immediate sales and some that have been relisted over two weeks. I will most likely just donate those items.

Before I list an item in the marketplace, I do a search for products similar to mine to get a feel for the price to charge. And this was where I discovered a lovely act of kindness.

The Act of Kindness

A lady had posted a box of pantry staples, all within their due date, for FREE, for anyone who would need them.

pantry fillers

I immediately thought what a kind gesture – to offer food for FREE to someone that may be struggling this time of year.

The Exchange

I wrote to the lister (because you direct message them if you’re interested in buying their item) and said I wasn’t interested in picking up the food, but acknowledged her beautiful heart for offering free pantry staples. It would certainly bless someone in need.

And while it could go to a person not necessarily in a difficult situation, offering a free box of food – that’s within date – is a lovely gesture in itself to be admired.

The lister replied immediately and thanked me for my kind words.

I replied, explaining how I was inspired by her post to do a similar thing. I was reminded just how easy it is to change someone’s day.

The lister responded quickly again and her last sentence took me by surprise. She said ‘thanks for your kind heart also’.

The little exchange got me thinking: when we acknowledge the good in others, it reflects the good we have inside of us.

acknowledge the good in others quote

Acknowledge the Good in Others

We shouldn’t do good things or acts of kindness to be noticed.

But when we acknowledge an act of kindness by someone, it demonstrates we’ve noticed and taken time to encourage them. The recipient will receive something, the viewer receives pleasure from watching the exchange and the giver receives joy for being helpful. It’s a joyful situation all round.

It doesn’t take much to acknowledge the good in others. Here are some examples off the top of my head.

When someone writes a blog post that resonates, write a comment or send a message of encouragement.

When a business delivers a hassle-free service, leave online feedback or give a shout out on social media so others can support that business.

When a friend volunteers their time to a local community organization or at church, acknowledge the time they’ve invested in helping out for free. That’s a giving heart right there. And you should be proud that you’re friends with them.

There are so many instances where we can recognise the good in others and can send an encouraging word that’s uplifting.

I’m glad I stopped to notice those free pantry staples. Not because I needed them, but because I needed the joy. I needed a reminder that humans can be good. It made me happy to see that sort of kindness on Facebook. It seems to be in lack so much these days.

I don’t suggest we all start giving pantry staples away for free (but hey, why not?), but I definitely think it’s important to encourage those who have felt led to give in different ways. Words of encouragement are also a gift, and kindness has always been free.

Have you ever had a similar circumstance in your life where you’ve been encouraged by the generosity of others?

Christmas gift ideas 2017

It was quite the conundrum to figure out what to buy Miss Phoebe for her first Christmas.

Being the third girl in our family, we had all of the things already to keep her entertained and occupied. We couldn’t give her nothing… or could we?

We did get her something. But I still can’t remember what we got her, and that was only two and a half years ago! Which proves that Christmas baby gifts don’t have to be amazing. Often practical is the best approach.

Depending on the age of the baby, they may not be able to play with their gift, but they will during the following year as they grow, so toys are still a great option for this age group.

Tradie’s Lunchbox – Easy Tuna Salad Lettuce Wraps

Looking for a healthy and filling lunch idea that can be transported to work or out and about when with your kids? You’ll love these Easy Tuna Salad Lettuce Wraps. I had 2 in one sitting and I felt very satisfied, with no hankering for something more to fill my tummy.

The Plumbette Tradie's Lunchbox Easy Tuna Salad Lettuce Wraps

Healthy and Easy Tuna Salad Lettuce Wraps

I have been looking for healthy lunch alternatives, that just don’t involve salad. In a way, this is still a salad, but it’s be turned into a wrap. A very healthy wrap.

Ingredients for The Plumbette Tradie's Lunchbox Easy Tuna Salad Lettuce Wraps

Some of the ingredients for these wraps were sourced from our vegetable garden. I love having herbs and veggies available in our garden. The difficulty with our vegetable garden is maintaining it, and then waiting for the produce to grow so it’s ready to be used in recipes. The beetroots are nearly ready for picking. Looking forward to creating a feta and beetroot salad or tart. #watchthisspace

You can add anything to your tuna salad filling. I opted for tomatoes, red onion, green onion/shallots, celery, carrot and basil and parsley.

I added lime and mayonnaise to create a creamy, combined texture, easy for spooning into the lettuce cups. You can add more or less to suit your taste preferences.

Cos lettuce or ice berg works well for these wraps. The inner leaves are usually the strongest and will keep their shape. I used these for the photos in this post.

If transporting these wraps to work, I’d use a bento or compartmentalized lunchbox as shown below. Separate the lettuce wraps into the larger section and add herbs and your tuna salad to the smaller sections.

November is the new December

2
November is the new December

I don’t know about you, but I feel like November is the new December.

I am booked every Friday Night and Saturday night in November until the first weekend in December.

The problem with volunteering and being a part of different teams and friendship groups, has seen an influx of get togethers booked before the December madness.

Problem is, all these events have now turned my November into a mad month. It’s not something to complain about, it’s just something I’ve noticed. Has the same happened for you too? Right now, December is looking less busy than November!

So far, we have hosted two end of year group get-together’s from church.

christmas table setting november is the new december

We’ve been able to test run our new BBQ from Bunnings and it’s been so good. Our last BBQ died after having it for 13 years. It seems we’ve had a run of stuff needing to be replaced lately because of age and it no longer working.

I’ve also been taste testing and experimenting with some new Coles Christmas delights (gifted). This Gingerbread and Butterscotch Sponge Pudding is sooo good. It’s so good, everyone will want seconds (we did!). I’ve got a spare in the pantry in case of unexpected guests or if I have a hankering for something Christmasy to eat. Not sure how long it will stay in the pantry…

Goles Gingerbread and Sponge Pudding

Now that the Melbourne Cup is over, the shops are getting into the spirit of Christmas. Our local shopping centre has Santa’s house set up for Santa photos. Every time we walk by it, Maggie asks if she can go see Santa yet, and I’ve had to tell her, he’s still at the North Pole. The excitement is certainly building.

Last Tuesday, I accompanied Maggie on her Kindy Excursion. I have great memories of doing the same trip with Esther two years ago. The whole Kindy class heads to the Ipswich Art Gallery, and we got to experience the Built for Speed Exhibition. The website says it’s open from the 17th November to early next year. Make a note to visit this when you’re on school holidays. I’d say it’s more suited for kids aged 4 and up because there are small Lego pieces and making the car can be a little fiddly if kids are used to playing with Duplo.

Maggie and I built a Lego car together. I get a little competitive when building things… anyway our first car got obliterated after hitting the inner wall of the second ramp (which you can see behind Maggie in the picture below). After a few modifications, and some fire extensions, our car was able to make the jump. Maggie was so excited. And I was relieved our car made the jump, still instact!

Maggie and the need for speed Ipswich Art Gallery
We got our craft on and made medals. Well I got my craft on and made two medals. They are on display on the main wall. You’ll be able to see our work if you head to the exhibition.

car medals Ipswich Art Gallery
Can you guess which two medals I made?

I was exhausted after our excursion and many of us parents who travelled with the kids concurred there would be no way we could be early childhood teachers.

After our big day on Tuesday, Wednesday was all about Maggie doing her prep interview and getting her school uniform for next year. It’s hard to believe I will have two kids at school next year. I’m a little excited by it because it means one less drop off and pick up. I won’t know myself!

While there are still a few weeks away before Kindy and school finishes, I’m relishing the child free days a little longer. School holidays are always fun, but I do like the routine that school brings to our days and weeks. I get a little sentimental and emotional at this time of year as things start to end. It seems the end comes around quicker than the beginning these days.

How busy is your November? Is it busier than December? Is your November the new December as well?  Do you have a little one starting school next year?

24 Christmas Gift Ideas for Women 2017

Christmas gift ideas 2017

This has turned out to be a cracker of a post because there are so many talented local businesses to include and I have more women in my life, than men to buy for, so I have compiled a mega gift list. These 24 Christmas Gift Ideas for Women will have you covered for all the ladies in your life. If I got one of these gifts under the Christmas tree, I’d be happy. (Take note Mr Senyard, I love the Shaynna Blaze Book,  pom pom basket and tassel earrings). Various other gifts I have used before and can vouch for their quality.

Choosing the right gift can be daunting, but I will say putting thought into a gift is part of giving the gift. If you know your friend needs some encouragement or loves scripture, gift her a band of encouragement, if she loves homewares, purchase a home décor book, if she loves to cook, buy her the latest cook book from Cooker and a Looker or the new Thermobliss calendar. Purchasing any of these items will support all my friends who have created amazing products this year.

For the hard to buy for, purchase the daily quotes from A box of, The Special Unicorn Box from Heart in Box or a diffuser.

Hopefully you will find something in this curated list of gifts. You might even find something for yourself. Be sure to tag your partner or share the post so they get the hint. 

A Week of House Maintenance

1
A week of house maintenance gardening

Whenever we head away for a family holiday, Jacob will book the week after (or before) off. The intention is to help me get ahead with some writing for my blogs (so he can look after the girls and do their drop offs and pick ups) and get some house maintenance jobs done. Often our list is longer than the time we’ve allowed for and we don’t always get done what we had planned. (I still didn’t get ahead with my writing!) Having said that, I have been able to write a bit more frequently during the week.

Last week seemed to fly because we were busy, tackling our very long to do list. Jacob worked on the backyard, and I tackled areas inside the house that have been bugging me for ages.

Here’s a list of what we got done:

1. Tidied the veggie garden and planted more veggies.

2. Pulled out all the dead leaves and the 100 outdoor toys that had been thrown into the back garden. This took a few days.

3. Added hay to the garden to tidy it up.

4. Washed and vacuumed the car. Even behind the car seats. What a delightful buffet of food that was found behind there!!

5. Purchased new plant for dining table. Repurposed the old fern that was looking a bit worse for wear. Fingers crossed this one stays alive till Christmas.

6. Cleaned out the pantry and container cupboards.

7. Tidied the top of our drawers.

8. Purchased new indoor plants for our bedsides.

9. Tested new mattresses in stores as we need to replace our current mattress. Bought new pillows and added to bed.

10. Tided top drawer of bedside drawers.

11. Cleaned windows.

12. Washed the outdoor furniture covers and cushion covers.

cleaned outdoor area house maintenance

13. Swept and cleaned the alfresco area.

14. Sold some decluttered items on Facebook Marketplace.

15. Bought a new BBQ.

new bbq from bunnings

In amongst the cleaning and culling and tidying, my dad came over to take all the garden rubbish to the dump. It was a full load.

I also got some personal jobs done for myself like updating media kits, writing down content ideas and catching up on emails from being away for a week.

Doctors’ appointments were also booked to get skin checks done and a test for myself. Both of us are all good for another year.

Let’s also not forget the washing that had to be done during the week from being away too.

Putting aside a week to get all those niggling jobs done feels good. It’s something we now do because it’s often too much to do on a weekend. Putting a week aside helps us get jobs done that get neglected over time.

new plant for our bedside
Our new plant for our bedside

The list will be ongoing. There’s the driveway that still needs to be fixed, a termite inspection that needs to be booked and sorting through more areas in the house that could do with a bit of culling.

I always think of the stuff that still needs to be done, rather than feel proud about what was achieved last week. Do you do this too?

I have to remember that the maintenance on a house never ends, and when you have kids, you need to allow extra time to get it done.

What house maintenance jobs are niggling you at the moment? When do you try to get them done?

5 Positive Changes I’ve Made This Year

5 positive changes I've made this year

It’s always good to get reflective this time of year, on what good decisions I made and what I could have done better. I was inspired to write this post after reading a similar post from A Private Life of a Girl. I’ve found this exercise to be incredibly helpful and powerful in being grateful for what I’ve experienced so far in 2017. So here are my 5 positive changes I’ve made this year, and maybe you might like to get reflective and contemplate on your own?

5 Positive Changes I’ve Made in 2017

5 positive changes I made in 2017

1. Placing Phoebe into Daycare

Putting Phoebe into Daycare for one day a week has made the biggest positive change to our lives. Granted, Tuesday mornings are busy because there are three drop offs (and three pick ups!). Yet, it has given me 5 hours of uninterrupted work time a week. And Phoebe loves her special day at Daycare. She can’t wait to go, which makes it easier to drop her off. Those 5 child-free hours fly when I’m sitting at my computer though, but it has helped ensure I’m not up late at night or up really early in the morning to get work done. Next year, I’m hoping to have two kid free days to free up my evenings and weekends in front of the computer.

Phoebe and maggie wearing sunnies

2. Saying Yes to Different Opportunities

This year, I’ve had some amazing opportunities come my way and I wouldn’t have had them, if I didn’t say yes. There have been times where I’ve said yes and wondered if I can do what I’ve been given the responsibility to do. But I’ve surprised myself in doing the work and enjoying it. Receiving good feedback on what I’ve done has helped boost my confidence too. Doing new things has motivated me to learn more. These opportunities have also given me great experience, which I’ve been able to invest into my own blogs and social media pages.

Saying yes to volunteer roles like being the Workplace Health and Safety Officer at Maggie’s Kindy has also been good for me. While it’s made my year incredibly busy, it’s a wonderful feeling of knowing I’m doing a job that can help others.

3. Saying No To Attending Events

I love attending public events and even being at the forefront of public events, but this year I pulled back to allow time for the things I’ve said yes to. For example, being the WHS officer at Kindy means one night out a month for the committee meetings. I can’t do too many late nights in a row, so it has meant I’ve had to say no to attending various events.

Saying yes to developing friendships and dating my husband or making memories with my children has meant I’ve said no to networking opportunities. I came to the conclusion that these will always be available year in and year out, but when you find true friends, or you realise how great it is to date your husband again (now we’re out of the baby years) or how fast your kids grow up, you do what needs to be done to nourish those relationships to ensure they flourish. So I have said no to a lot of the trade breakfast events, plumbing networking events and some blogging events because I just can’t do everything.

gotta nourish to flourish

4. Letting go of past hurts

This has been a really tough one for me to do. And I don’t find it easy to do. But I remind myself how imperfect I am and how I’d want someone to respond to me after I’ve hurt them. This way of thinking has helped me get over myself and forgive.

This year I’ve had personal upsets that brought out my ugly side. But facing them and letting go of the hurt and injustice has been tremendously freeing. It’s still something I will always need to work on, but I’m glad I cried the ugly tears and had a few deep conversations with my parents and friends who have understood the history of the situations and have just supported me 100%. It’s good to have family and friends who know the truth of the matters you’re dealing with and are there to understand what you’ve been through, but then kick you in the butt to get back up again.

This speaks true to me. Walking away is hard to do, but you have to do it! Peace out! #innerpeace #chooseyourbattles

5. Investing time into friends

I think I did better at this this year than previous years. Spending time with friends from Esther’s school, church and my gorgeous blogging friends has been good for my soul – and hopefully theirs. When you find ‘your kind of people’, you want to invest in the friendships.

The bodyguard friends

Over the course of this year, there have been some good times like going to a paint and sip class, celebrating our children’s birthdays, celebrating each other’s birthdays and heading out to the theatre and there are still more events to enjoy until the end of the year. I’m so glad I said yes to spending time with these wonderful people. Its my goal to keep that going into 2018.

This year has certainly been a mixed bag of highs and lows and with many ordinary days in between. But it’s been a good year and I’m happy and content with the outcomes of these decisions throughout the year.

What positive changes did you make this year that have helped you?

Don’t Despair When You’re at the end of Your Rope

0
Don't Despair When You're at the end of Your Rope

Struggles are a normal part of life. They favour everyone and their timing can be rarely predicted. But right now, I know many family and friends are struggling with issues they never saw coming. I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but struggles seem to rear their head just before Christmas.

Statistically, it’s common for marriages to break up in November and December. Various reasons are suggested for the timing, but the most common one is because couples don’t want to spend the holiday season – being Christmas and New Year’s, with someone they no longer love. There are also mounting pressures from the year that cause a relationship to fracture.

For me personally, I’m not struggling (and my marriage is swell), but I do have a few niggling concerns about changes I’ve been making in my life. It’s been scary chasing after something I’m not sure will play out. A part of me is excited by the possibilities, but a bigger part is a little scared of what happens if it falls through?

I squash the negativity with faith and visualizing. I’ve found this to be quite helpful. (Thanks Bron)

This post really isn’t about me though. I felt lead to write to encourage someone (it could be you) going through difficult times right now.

It could be a relationship breakdown.

Stress about finances.

Stress about job security.

Stress about lack of work coming in.

Worries about health.

Worries about kids, infertility, expanding family or grandchildren.

It could be anything.

Whatever the struggle is, don’t internalize it and hope ‘the universe’ sorts it out.

The universe couldn’t care less about your problems.

But God does. He cares very much about the burdens you carry and the struggles you’re dealing with right now.

If you feel like you’re at the end of your rope and you don’t know how long you can fake ‘holding it together’, don’t despair. Reaching the end of your rope places in you a position where you have no choice but to rely on another power to help you. And that higher power should be God.

God wants to work in your life, but you have to trust and essentially let go of what you’re holding onto, so He can take control. Doesn’t it make sense that in order for you to receive, you’ve also got to let go?

What does that even look in ‘real’ life?

It means you pray for a miracle. And when I mean pray, I mean practice a stance of surrender. Speak out your concerns and be bold in your requests for what you need to happen.

You also trust the right resolution will occur.

It means you never stop hoping and believing for the best outcome.

It means you speak over negative thoughts with uplifting contemplations.

I know many successful people found their breakthrough, when they were at the end of their rope.

And the same can happen for you.

A thought provoking quote, which I’ve found encouraging says, ‘Sometimes when you’re in a dark place, you think you’ve been buried, but actually you’ve been planted.’

don't despair quote

Living at the end of your rope is not a fun place to be. It’s painful (hello rope burn) and uncomfortable, but it can also be a catalyst for amazing things to come your way. You find strength you never realized you had, and you build a resilience you hadn’t acquired before you came face to face with your circumstance.

Trusting in the one who created you and has the power to equip you to face all challenges, is certainly reassuring. It also reminds you to never fear the feeling of being out of control.

The end of the rope is not your end. Your purpose will always be greater than your position. It certainly may not feel like a great place to be, but it does place you in position to contemplate unusual possibilities which can lead to great things. So persevere, trust and believe in the best outcome to your circumstances.

The Message Matthew 5:3

“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you, there is more of God and his rule.”

12 Christmas Gift Ideas for Men 2017

Christmas gift ideas 2017

How are you going in getting organised for Christmas? So far I have got all the teachers presents purchased and I have bought our girls their ‘big’ present to share. It’s sitting in the garage, hidden away from mischievous inspecting. This weeks’ Christmas gift guide is for the men in your life. I find them hard to buy for because if they are like my dad, they say they don’t want or need anything. And then if they do need something, they just buy it themselves.

Jacob is always happy with a new release DVD. We often buy a combined gift together and have something little under the tree for each other.

Food and drinking gifts always go down a treat. I haven’t included these in this guide because it’s always up to personal tastes. I like to add something that can be kept with a drink or food gift, so a bottle opener or leather coasters attached to a drink gift, or a wooden chopping board or canister with the food gifts. Last year, I made mini snack bars in a jar. An easy and affordable DIY gift idea.

In this list of gifts, I’ve thought of a number of items that are practical or nice to have. There are also gifts from local small businesses in this mix.

Thank you to those of you who left links or tagged friends to share their business with me. I like to support local businesses where I can and Christmas time is a great time to do it. (if you want to be considered in any future gift guides, please leave a link to your business under my post on Facebook)

Top 13 Things to do in Coffs Harbour With Kids

Top 13 things to do in Coffs Harbour with Kids

Every year we try to book a family holiday away. We like to travel local because it’s cheaper and much easier with little kids. This year we decided to venture away from our standard Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast destinations, and headed further south to Coffs Harbour. I didn’t realise how much there was to do at Coffs Harbour. Of course, you can do as much or as little as you want, depending on the holiday you like. We like a mix of touristy attractions, with a relaxing swim at the beach or pool. And our week away to Coffs Harbour included that and more.

If you’re looking for a place that offers amazing family experiences, you should look into staying at Coffs Harbour.

1. Get Kissed by a Seal and Dolphin at Dolphin Marine Magic

If you want to get up close and personal with a seal or dolphin, you can certainly do that and more at Dolphin Marine Magic. We got to the park right on opening and this gave us time to be interactive with the dolphins. It was an incredible experience. The staff are passionate about their animals and their personalized service to us, made this place a must visit. Because we were one of the first families into the park, we got to interact with dolphins before the main show. It was a thrill to have our hand in the water and wait for the dolphins to swim to us.

Dolphin Marina Magic touching a dolphin

They are such beautiful and playful creatures. After our encounter, we were able to get a kiss from a seal and dolphin which made for a lovely memory for us all.

Dolpin marine magic kiss from seal

Both Esther and Maggie were picked from the crowd to be part of the main show. The girls learned about the importance of  putting rubbish in the bin and reducing plastic waste, which harms the marine life in the ocean. The girls then got to feed a seal which meant they got fishy hands.

Dolphin Kiss at Dolphin Marine Magic

Tips for your visit: Take swimwear if you’d like to swim with a dolphin. The cost is an extra $50 on your ticket entry. If you don’t want to swim with a dolphin, take extra clothes or wear fast drying clothes as you can get wet from the water overflowing from the pools when standing next to them, while encountering the dolphins. Keep wipes on you to wash fishy hands after the kids have fed the dolphins and seals.

2. Walk Along the Coffs Harbour Jetty

After visiting Dolphin Marine Magic, we headed to the jetty and walked up along it. It was quite breezy on the day we visited, so do take a cardi. It’s a great place for some fresh air and views of the harbour.

3. Have Lunch at Hoey Moey

The Hoey Moey is a pub attached to what looks to be backpacker accommodation. Every day there is a $7.50 meal of the day. The kids also get to eat for under $10 and their meals include a drink and ice-cream. We had lunch here and it cost us around $40, drinks included. Our meal of the day was baked fish and it was delicious. Definitely a must visit as it is known to be the best food in Coffs Harbour (possibly the cheapest as well).

4. Visit the Clog Barn

The Clog Barn is a free attraction located on the Pacific Highway. It’s well worth a visit. The kids loved walking through the model display which offer railways and windmills. The miniature Dutch village is also home to many lizards, which the kids loved spotting as they walked through the display.

Each day there are clog making demonstrations in the quaint shop.

5. Visit the Forest Sky Pier

Close your eyes as you drive your way up the mountain to visit the Forest Sky Pier, which gives you amazing views of Coffs Harbour. The pier does sway, a bit similar to the Mt Tambourine Sky Walk. I didn’t stay on there for very long. Make sure you choose a sunny day for clear views of the Harbour.

6. Do a Carobana Factory Tour and Taste Test Carob Products

If you love lollies and chocolate, you will love this mini tour of the Carobana factory. It’s a free attraction and we got to see carob bullets move on the cooling belt, and rocky road being made. Make sure you arrive after 10am as that is when you will see the factory come to life.

Carobana factory tour

I had always thought carob was bitter tasting, but the products here are delicious. The shop doesn’t skimp on taste testing either. I enjoyed learning how carob is made and it was a thrill to see first hand how the products are produced in the factory. Because we were the only family there, we got invited into parts of the factory the general public aren’t allowed in. We even got to lick the bowl after the rocky road was made. The staff here are so friendly. It really is a great place to visit with kids. The products are very reasonably priced too. We bought heaps of carob products here. My favourites were the Carob peppermint bites. YUM.

7. Visit the Butterfly House

The Butterfly House was magical to visit. This was one of our most favourite attractions.

Butterfly House Coffs Harbour

The Butterfly House is a greenhouse, tropical environment that houses a huge number of butterflies. The best time to visit is between 10am and 2pm when the butterflies are most active. It’s the closest thing I’ve felt to being like Snow White. It really is enchanting and relaxing to watch so many butterflies fly past.

Butterfly house

After our visit in the greenhouse, there is a maze with questions about butterflies which you need to make your way around to find the answers. The kids get a lollypop when they complete the maze and their information sheet. I learned a few things about butterflies I didn’t know before.

8. Walk behind a waterfall at Dorrigo National Park

Dorrigo National Park is an hour’s drive southwest of Coffs Harbour. Despite Siri directing us to the outskirts of Dorrigo National Park, ensure you enter Dorrigo Rain Forest Centre to get directions to the rainforest walk.

Dorrigo National Park Rainforest Walk Coffs Harbour

This circuit is around 6km and will take around 2 hours to walk. We got to walk behind Crystal Shower Falls and see the stunning Tristania Falls. The kids did complain about the walk, so there was a tag team of piggy back rides and carrying the younger two when their legs got tired. When we reached the end of the walk, we had lunch at the Rainforest Café, starting with an ice-block to cool ourselves down. This walk was another highlight of our trip.

9. Touch a sea cucumber, sea urchin and starfish at Solitary Islands Aquarium

The Solitary Islands Aquarium is only open on weekends and school holidays. It’s only a small aquarium, but the interactive parts are really educational for kids. We got to see the staff feed the fish – we even got to witness the gloomy octopus unplug the top off it’s test tube to eat the food inside the tube.

Solitary Island Aqaurium

The great thing about the Solitary Islands area is the mix in water from the tropics and Tasman Sea allow for a mix of both cold and warm water marine life to live in the area.
At the interactive touch water station, we got to hold a starfish, sea urchin and sea cucumber. It’s definitely worth a visit and a great rainy day activity.

10. Explore the Rock Pools

The kids LOVED exploring the beach at Charlesworth Bay, behind our hotel. There were amazing rock pools that the girls loved looking in for marine life.

11. Have a Coffee (and lunch) at Artisti

Artisti was listed as a top place to visit on Trip Advisor. It definitely has a modern vibe and we must have missed the breakfast rush when we arrived. The girls enjoyed babycinos and brownies, while Jacob and I ordered an early lunch. My Sticky Pork Belly Salad was delicious!

12. Visit the Big Banana Fun Park and Ride The Attractions

The girls thought the Big Banana was the best part of the trip. There is so much to do here. Allow a good part of your day to do all the attractions. We did a tour of the Big Banana, then raced each other on the big slide (OMG it goes so fast! I screamed the whole way down) and then we spent time at the water park.

Big Banana Slide Top kids attractionThe water park is only open in sessions. When we went, there was only one session from 11:45am to 1:15pm. There are two sections of the park. One section for younger kids, and another for the kids and adults over 130 cm. I spent most of my time with the younger two, who were entertained by the bouncy slides.

Maggie at the Big Banana Water Park

After our water session finished, we had lunch, headed to the cheese shop and candy shop for much needed supplies. We then headed on the toboggan which was a lot of fun.

There is ice skating, laser force and mini golf available at the park. We didn’t do those, but it’s good to know they’re there for something extra to do.

13. Book North Coast Babysitting Service for the Kids for a Date Night

Thankfully the Novotel had a kids club which is run by Mid North Coast Babysitting Service. It cost us the same amount to babysit as it was for them to go to the club (which is run by the same company). We chose the club as we knew the kids would enjoy a change of scenery and play time. The girls got to do craft and had an absolute ball. Jacob and I had dinner at the Novotel. We were in the presence of Mark Taylor, Ian Healy and some of the Australian Women’s Cricket team, who were playing in Coffs Harbour.

Our week away was fantastic. We spent afternoons swimming in the pool or exploring the beach.

pool at coffs harbour novotel

Coffs Harbour is just under a 5 hour drive from Brisbane. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment at the Novotel Pacific Bay. We bought groceries so we could eat breakfast and a lunch or dinner at our hotel. The resort is lovely, and our room had been refurbished. The location was perfect for visiting the attractions. There are rumours the hotel will close to either be sold or refurbed as the resort is a little dated. I do hope it gets refurbed because the location is fantastic. A typical day involved visiting and attraction or two in the morning, lunch at the resort and then a swim in the afternoon and a walk on the beach. The beach is not patrolled. We didn’t swim there, but an amazing amount of shells and ocean life can be viewed at the rock pools.

Breaking the trip up

The 5 hour drive was broken up by a stay in Ballina on the way down, and a stop at Byron Bay on the way back home.

Ballina Big Prawn

We stayed one night in Ballina to visit family. We stayed at the Ballina Travellers Lodge and it was all we needed for a night’s stay. The rooms there have been refurbished. We stayed in a family room (sleeps 5) for one night for under $200. The room included a kitchen if we wanted to dine in. McDonalds was our dinner and breakfast choices because I didn’t want to cook and it was just easier. I can definitely recommend this hotel. Our previous accommodation wasn’t available for the night we needed.

On the way back home, we stopped at The Farm at Byron Bay. We weren’t there long because the place was packed and we were told there was a 45 minute wait for a table. The kids were hungry and it was hot, so we left and drove to the nearest McDonalds for a lunch stop.

Overall, the week was a fantastic break for us all. I took Esther and Maggie out of school and Kindy for the week. They learned so much on our trip away, and we made memories.

Next time you’re looking for a place to holiday at, do consider Coffs Harbour. We can’t wait to go back again.

Have you ever been to Coffs Harbour? Where in Australia is your favourite place to have a holiday?

Why I’m Glad We Chose a 7 Seater SUV over a 5 Seater Sedan

Tossing up on whether to go with a car that has more seats? Here’s why we chose a 7 seater SUV over a 5 seater sedan.

This post has been written in collaboration with NRMA

When I found out I was pregnant with Phoebe, I knew a new car was on the cards for our family.

The surprise pregnancy was the catalyst for us making a decision on whether to purchase an SUV or another sedan. The SUV won in the end, but I will admit a lot of thought was put into the purchase of our new car. I thought I’d share why I’m glad we chose a 7 seater SUV over a 5 seater Sedan. And I admit that my husband was right. And I was wrong.

The Apprehension

I have never been a fan of driving big cars. I would ALWAYS get nervous driving my dad’s Toyota Hilux 1.5 Cab Ute in the city, parking it into loading zones. I was that girl who would drive past a loading zone if I had to reverse park. I would drive around the city until I could find a park to pull into. Sometimes parking in an expensive car park for half an hour or so was better than me trying to wedge the ute into a tight space. I would physically punch the air when I could pull into an empty loading zone.

And so it was with this apprehension that made me weary of considering an SUV. Jacob suggested the 7 seater would be practical. All I could imagine was driving the streets of Brisbane in a semi-trailer.

But after heading to a number of different car dealers and looking at car seat configurations, the bigger SUV’s were looking to be our best bet.

The Considerations

I don’t know about you, but when our family would go on holidays, the car would be filled to the brim with STUFF. Holidaying with young kids can feel like you’re packing to go on a six-month expedition, when really, you’re only heading away for a week!

With a third little person on the way, and considering we like to holiday locally every year, we had to consider space needed for annual family vacations.

The second consideration was having family visit. In a sedan, there are no spare seats for extra passengers, but a 7 seater would allow us to travel with other family members, when they came to visit.

The third consideration was the cost. Could we afford upgrading to a bigger car because bigger cars usually require more money to purchase and run. I left this domain with Jacob, where he researched all the financial pros and cons of 7 seater SUV’s to help with our decision.

If you need to work out how much it will cost you to pay off your car, NRMA have this handy car loan calculator which will calculate your repayments so you can work out whether you can afford your new purchase or not. NRMA also offer new car loans and used car loans so you can be driving your new wheels in no time, whatever model you decided.

The Decision

We were lucky enough to use a local Toyota and was able to source a demo model of a 7 seater Toyota Kluger. We got the car for a brilliant price and got some free added extras. It was a very good day when we got to pick up our new Kluger and leave our Honda Civic, which was on the verge of heading into the period of requiring expensive repairs.

Why I’m Glad We Chose a 7 Seater SUV over a 5 Seater Sedan

We bought our car 3 years ago and I’m always grateful when I get behind the wheel. Here are just some of the reasons I love having a 7 seater SUV.

It fits all the car seats in a 7 seater SUV

I didn’t realise how difficult it was to fit 3 carseats in the back seat of a car. The Toyota Kluger and Nissan Pathfinder seemed to have the most room in the back seat to accommodate a baby capsule and two car seats.

I can separate the kids in a 7 seater SUV

Now that my girls are older, they like to fight or annoy each other when sitting next to each other in the back seat. Having a third row, with 2 seats in the back, has meant my oldest now sits in the back, and we’ve separated the younger two by installing their car seats on either side of the passenger seats. This separation promotes peace in the car while I’m driving and quite frankly, it’s great for my sanity.

Kluger space inside car 7 seater suv

I can fill the boot and still have space for the kids with an SUV

Just joking. I put the kids in first and no longer have to put shopping on their laps. The boot is so spacious, we have no trouble with lack of space when we head on holidays. When I do grocery shopping, the bread doesn’t get squashed, because the bags don’t need to be piled on top of each other for space.

I can help others with a 7 seater SUV

I LOVE being able to help others, and having a 7 seater Kluger has meant, if someone needs help getting their kid picked up from school, I can do it.
On school holidays, if we plan a day trip to a museum, I can take another mum and her two kids so we can travel together. It saves two cars heading out and is a lot of fun having a full car.

Heading out with friends to the art gallery, all seven seats are taken.

For some reason, I had thought having a 7 seater SUV would mean I’d be expected to be someone else’s car ferry service. But that hasn’t happened. In fact I’m the one offering to be the taxi service because I can do it, and I get a lot of joy in helping another mum out.

7 seater SUV is life changing
All the kids in the back

When choosing to upgrade a new car, there are so many variables to consider. One of the biggest considerations should be convenience.

I have never felt frustrated with our Kluger. I haven’t had the ‘if only we bought…’ regrets. Our Kluger has delivered what we imagined it would promise. It has over delivered and I’m so grateful I listened to my husband and gave up on my idea of driving our family of five in a sedan.

I will admit defeat on this one. Darling husband you were right in pushing us to get the 7 seater. And I’m so grateful you did.

If you are looking to upgrade your family car, consider Ken Mills Toyota Sunshine Coast as they offer after market service and may be able to source the right Toyota car you’re looking for.

Did you find it stressful deciding on a family car? What car features are important to you?

My Block Winner Predictions Were Wrong. Sort of.

My block winner predictions were wrong

I was wrong in my predictions for who would win The Block last night. Sort of. I did think Jason and Sarah’s house would have had a chance of winning last night,  but I am glad Josh and Elyse won. The couple banked $447,000 over the $2.62 million reserve price and won the $100,000 prize money so ended up receiving over half a millions dollars. Not bad for a couple of months of work.

Despite the profits made last night, many of the teams didn’t think they’d make any money after seeing their reserves. Even this morning, news has broken that the teams thought their reserve prices were too high.

Hence why many of the teams were hesitant in saying how much they wanted to make because they weren’t sure if they’d get anything.

A good decision was made at Ronnie and Georgia’s auction, to ensure they got more than just a little over reserve price.

Despite the drama by many of the couples on the series, I can’t ignore the drama instigated by the producers. It showed the worst of human nature. There is nothing wrong with healthy competition with styling and design, but instigating drama and inconsistent rules between teams – it’s tarnished the show and I know there are many that have suggested they won’t watch the show next year because of this.

Even the high reserve prices were another pain point. I didn’t want to see any of them walk away with nothing, but it was as if they had to create more drama and assumption that not much money would be made. Thankfully they all walked away with something. I do wish Sticks and Wombat got a bit more. But wasn’t their attitude on the show and during the auction so heartwarming to watch?

In the end, the right team won. Josh and Elyse’s house was consistently well constructed and styled each week. It’s good to see a couple reap the rewards for their hard work.

With that being said, I have said before on the blog many times that the show doesn’t give a good reflection on what really happens on a construction site. And the tight deadlines on the show, give a false expectation to those who are embarking on a renovation. The timeframes aren’t reflective of what happens in real life.

Yet, I do enjoy seeing the end room reveals and I think that is what will keep me coming back to watch. That and seeing couples reap the benefits of their hard work with positive auction results.

To end the season, I thought I’d share some of my favourite homeware pieces shown on this series – a mix of pieces from the challenge rooms and the houses themselves.

In Jason and Sarah’s house, I loved the art work chosen in the hall and the studio. These pieces caught my eye while I viewed the reveals.

Where to Find Female Tradies in Your Area

where to find female tradies in your area

If you’re wondering where to find female tradies in your area, this post will hopefully answer your question.

One of the questions I often get asked on my blog is ‘can you recommend a female plumber, carpenter, electrician and etc’. The lack of not knowing where female tradies are, have lead to unusual requests on my blog. I’ve often been contacted to sort out plumbing issues in Melbourne and Sydney, because they’ve searched on Google for a solution to their problem, and my blog has answered their question. And of course they need a licensed plumber to do the work. Who better to use than the female plumber who answered their query with a blog post? I usually recommend a trade business I’ve dealt with in those cities, but not all of them have a female tradie in the company.

I think the more consumers request for female tradies, the better it is for the industry to recognise the demand for female tradies.

Personally, I’m happy to have a male tradie in my home because I’m confident enough to not put up with any bull crap. But I do understand the hesitation of having a male tradie in your house, if you’re a female, and on you’re own.

I know of a few plumbing companies in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast who have a female apprentice on their team, which is encouraging for women wanting to get into the trade. It also assists with the demand for female tradies.

It can be hard knowing which companies have female tradies, unless you actively look on their website and they advertise they have a female tradie. (Take note of this if you run a trade business – make sure your website clearly states you have a female tradie as part of your team).

This can still be a meticulous process, so how can you find female tradies in your area?

where to find female tradies

The Lady Tradies Australia site has a directory of female tradies in each state. The list isn’t huge, but I encourage any female tradies to get themselves on that directory if they want more work. For those wanting to hire a female tradie, this directory is a good place to start. Some of my recommendations in each state are in that directory. You just need to click on the drop down menu ‘Find a Lady Tradie’ and choose your state.

If you would like to advertise your business on my blog, feel free to contact me. I will have side bar space available in November, where you can advertise your trade business for a small fee.

Have you ever used a female tradie? Or a company that employs female tradies? Give them a shout out in the comments.

Esther’s New Bedroom – Girl’s Bedroom Makeover

Esther's New Bedroom - Girl's Bedroom Makeover

This year, we decided to make over Esther’s room for her Birthday. She has been infatuated with TV shows like House Rules and The Block, I thought it would be a good experience to give her room an update.

Her room was in desperate need of a paint and we wanted to swap the big bookcase for a desk. She was using an old make-up dress up table as a desk. (You can see how we updated that here)

Esther’s Room Before the Makeover

There were things in Esther’s room that were getting to me. Her first quilt was ripped at the bottom, she had pictures stuck to the walls with sticky tape and she had accumulated a lot of… crap.

Esther's big bookcase

So on the June school holidays, we prepped the room. Oh my word. It was hard work scrubbing the sticky residue from the sticky tape where Esther had put her artwork on the walls. The prep work is the hardest part of painting a room I think.

We chose a grey feature wall with gold, spot wall decals. We came up with Esther’s room design by looking on the Adairs website. I got Esther to choose her quilt cover and she ended up saying she wanted the room as featured on the site. So I bought the cloud shelves and wall decals from Adairs too.

When it came to purchasing Esther a desk, I wanted one that was white and had some sort of shelving for her books and random toys. Zanui had the perfect desk called the Adaline (currently $129.95), which at the time cost me a little over a $100 including delivery as it was on sale! I didn’t want to spend too much on a desk because we still have a mini Picasso who likes to draw on furniture and walls when I’m not looking.

We went to Kmart to get a pin board, chair and mat to complete her room.

Overall the room has turned out beautifully.

Esther loves her room and she enjoys taking visitors to check it out. We still have to fix the painting on the ceiling and we would like to replace the block out curtains with plantation shutters.

Sometimes it can be hard for our kids to know what kind of bedroom designs they like. Don’t be afraid to copy a websites design. Pinterest is also a great resource that kids can slowly scroll through and show what they like.

I enjoy walking into Esther’s room now. It’s so much easier to keep clean. I just have to keep a check on the amount of stuff that seems to accumulate in there each week. I have no idea where it all comes from.

I’ve put together where we got some of the things in Esther’s room. Some things have sold out so I’ve found similar pieces.

  1. Adaline Storage Office Desk $129.95
  2. Kmart White Dining Chair $29
  3. Adairs Gold Decal Wall Stickers $12.59
  4. Swan Princess Cloud Shape Cushion $26.95
  5. Adairs Cloud Quilt Cover in Purple $59.99
  6. Zanui Cloud Shelf $74.95
  7. Animal Floor Rug $20

The Things I’ve Missed Because I’m a Creature of Habit

1
the things I've missed because I'm a creature of habit

Whenever I do Maggie’s Kindy drop off, I’m always in a rush to get to the car. The longer I stay, the more difficult it is to pull Phoebe away from all the things that just cry out to a toddler to play with.

On Tuesdays, I am out of that Kindy quick as a flash so I can get home and get a solid 5 hours of work done. Tuesdays are my only child free days where I make three drops offs to make it happen. I make a stop on the way home for a coffee and baked treat (because I don’t have to share) and this acts as my smoko as I write, write, write.

But the Wednesday after I hit publish on my change post (which many of you resonated with by the way), I took my time getting Maggie into Kindy. I didn’t rush off like I normally do and lingered around the kid’s lockers.

I then saw a jar with bits of paper in it with a sign that encouraged the parents to pick one out to read the quote for the day. I hadn’t seen it before and thought ‘wow, what a great idea’.

Curiously, I picked out my quote and it was very fitting for me to read.

Quote of the day at Kindy
The quote was so fitting, I took it home with me.

I headed over to the Kindy Director and told her what a wonderful idea it was to have the jar of quotes available for parents to be encouraged during their day. Michelle laughed and said, ‘Bec, that’s been there forever. Have you only just noticed it now?’

I could have received a new quote every Kindy day, had I not rushed out the door.

And so it got me thinking about what ‘other things’ I’ve missed in my life while rushing from here to there. Just writing this makes me think I’ve written about this before.

But I don’t think it’s necessarily the rushing that has caused me to miss things. I think it’s getting stuck in the same routine, day in, day out, that causes my eyes to focus on what I need to get done, and not what is happening around me. The constant routine, where I stick to old habits, unwilling to change, result in everything looking the same, because I’m never in a position to notice anything different. What things have I missed because I’m a creature of habit?

That question has encouraged me, because what am I going to now notice, since I’ve realised this? It’s certainly going to help with my initiation in getting some changes in my life. Being so focused on one area, has meant I haven’t lifted my eyes to see other opportunities that are most probably better for me.

There is a season for everything, and I do believe the right opportunities will present themselves at the time when needed.

For me, this little experience has given me faith that I will find those opportunities, because I’m not focused on what has been. I’m open to the possibilities of what could be.

I don’t think there is anything deep about this revelation. It’s possibly a reminder to lift your eyes every once and a while. You just never know what you might find. For me, it was a quote that met me right where I was at.

Have you ever discovered something that has been there all along? Are you a creature of habit too?

Corporate Christmas Gift Ideas – Christmas Gift Ideas for Clients

0
Christmas gift ideas 2017

October is the best time of year to consider corporate Christmas gift ideas for clients.

One of my jobs on the Christmas school holidays as a teenager, was making Christmas Hampers for Dad’s work clients in our plumbing company. It was a big task and often involved having a few friends over to help with placing all the food items into each basket and wrapping it with cellophane.

Eventually, my mum organised a bulk delivery of hampers, which would be delivered well before the industry closed up shop for Christmas. The boxers of hampers would be piled high in our front entryway, lounge room and dining room. When I started working with my dad, it was always a lot of fun writing a list of clients to gift our baskets to, and then delivering them to each individual builder, estimator and project manager.

Corporate Christmas gifts are a great way to say thank you to clients for their loyalty through-out the year. Usually now is the time to organise personalized hampers to ensure they are delivered in December.

But not all companies can afford the expense of corporate gifts for their clients. And it’s true, that it’s not usually expected. Yet, it’s still a good practice to acknowledge your clients, and thank them for another year of trading. Without them, you wouldn’t have a business. The gifts don’t have to be extravagant, I’ve thought of some ideas for corporate gifts that can be paid for from petty cash, that allow all staff to enjoy.

Corporate Christmas Gift Ideas for Clients and Colleagues

Christmas Hampers

Hampers always make a great gift idea for clients. Consideration needs to be made on the cost per box and delivery fees. It’s also important to think about whether the basket should include alcohol or not. I suggest the baskets don’t include alcohol. For the simple reason that not everyone drinks and you don’t know if someone has an issue with being gifted alcohol. I once gifted a hamper to a recovered alcoholic. I felt terrible when I found out, but from that situation, I made the decision not to buy gifts with alcohol in it. Here are some places I’ve had fantastic service from when delivering hampers.

Movie Vouchers

Everyone loves going to the movies. For many, it’s a tradition to head to the cinemas on boxing day. A budget friendly way of saying thank you to clients is gifting sets of double tickets to the movies. Movie vouchers can be bought at a discount in bulk from RACQ.

Diffuser and Oils

Why not promote a workplace with a sense of calm in a high stress environment? Deliver a diffuser and some oils for productivity. It’s a gift all staff can reap the benefits from.

ultrasonic vaporiser
Aroma Bloom 5 – 1 Vaporiser $99.95

Deliver a Cheesecake

If the dollars are really sparse for Christmas gifts, one way to say thank you to a client is by delivering a boxed Cheesecake to the staffroom so all staff can enjoy a piece of cake. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Cheesecake corporate christmas gift
Marble Cheesecake from The Cheesecake Shop $29.95

A Fruit Basket

Like the cheesecake, but much healthier, a fruit basket is a lovely way for all staff to enjoy the gift.

Edible Blooms Fruit Basket
Edible Blooms Fruit Star Bouquet $115

As with the teacher gift ideas, these corporate gift ideas are a way to say thank you for another great year working together. The smallest of gifts, can mean a lot and make a business feel appreciated.

What is the best corporate Christmas gift you’ve ever received? What have you bought in the past for Corporate gifts?
