Where to Buy Glass Bottles for DIY Essential Oil Cleaners

0
Oils for life Australia bottles for essential oil cleaning products

If you have been motivated to make your own essential oil cleaners, you will know the importance of using glass bottles for handling. Glass bottles and aluminum bottles are the best vessels to use for your DIY Essential Oil Cleaners.

They used to be hard to source, but I’ve become aware of a local business which is a few suburbs away from me and ships their bottles and products Australia wide.

Oils for Life Australia recently changed ownership and my friend who introduced me to doTERRA oils a few years ago, now runs it. I recently headed to the shop at Darra to check out the range… and I was inspired to make my own products.

I have been meaning to make my own air freshener and linen spray for the last year. I had bought the distilled water, but needed alcohol for the solution. I found out I could swap the alcohol for witch hazel and this was readily available at Oils for Life Australia.

Waaay back when we first moved into our house and were looking at ways to cut the grocery bill down, I made my own cleaners. It saved us a lot of money, but I did question if they cleaned our house better than commercial cleaners. I got the recipe from Simple Savings. Unfortunately the recipe left our benchtops with an oily trail, which wasn’t ideal. As a result I went back to buying supermarket cleaners, or trying new cleaners available online.

Making my own cleaners is something I will look at again in the future now that I have a very healthy essential oil supply and a place to buy bottles and ingredients.

The shop also sells toys, which support women and children in Nepal.

Essential oil toys

I took Maggie on a mummy and daughter date and we made a quick visit to the store on the way home. She chose an Aromatherapy Curly Hair Doll to use in her room, to sleep with at night.

There is a bead on the toy to drop an essential oil so the aromatherapy can help calm a child.

There will be a bottle, ingredient or gift for someone who loves essential oils at Oils for Life Australia. I’ve already made my first product and will be back to the store to get more supplies. I’ve been inspired to make my own soap. Can’t wait to do that one.

You can buy all your essential oil product supplies for Oils for Life Australia.

12 Small Laundry Design Ideas

12 small laundry design ideas the plumbette

Small laundry design ideas have been on my radar, to make my laundry more functional than it currently is.

I have no bench space, no dryer and I’d love some shelving to store the baskets off the floor.

I am thankful I have a laundry, because our first house had a laundry corner at the back of the garage. It was sufficient for the two of us back then. With a family of 5, it would be overflowing from the seams!

The laundry has always been a small narrow room in Australian homes. It’s only in recent years the mud room design has become more popular.

If you’re not planning to renovate or build a new home, you will have to work with the existing space you have. You may be interested in these small laundry design ideas which have made a small space, extremely functional.

Small Laundry Design Tips to Consider

  • Build up – invest in cabinetry or open shelves above benches for extra storage
  • Build in – install the appliances next to each other to allow for extra bench space
  • Change your habits – Having a dirty clothes hamper in the laundry may not work within your existing space. Get the family into the habit of putting their dirty washing in a hamper in their room or the bathroom, which can then be emptied into the machine when ready.
  • Have a door, window or skylight for natural light. Good for ventilation too.
  • Build bench and cabinetry around the corner, underneath an end window for extra bench space.
  • Position the sliding door entry on the diagonal opposite of laundry bench edge.\
  • Have a single outdoor entry instead of a sliding door.
  • Stack up – stack dryer on top of washing machine.
  • Or combine washing machine and dryer together.
  • OR don’t have a dryer (not always practical though).

2. Design idea for top loader washing machine.

3. Stack appliances up.

4. If you have the space, build cabinetry and shelves on both walls.

5. Install a round laundry sink in the corner to allow for maximum bench space.

6. Do away with the dryer or get a combination of both appliances in the one.

7. Create an L shaped laundry bench by extending the bench and cabinetry under the window. Love how the plumbing has been installed for this one.

8. Position the opening of a sliding door on the diagonal opposite side of the laundry bench edge.

Don’t Lower Your Standards Because of Someone Else

0
don't change your standards

We’re living in times where our decisions and standards are often influenced by others. You only have to look on social media to see this played out. There are so many voices with a standard and moral that won’t always match your own, but it can still influence your decisions and beliefs. It can also make you question where you stand on an issue. Especially if they have the same beliefs, but a different opinion to you.

I think one of the biggest slip ups we can make in life is lowering our standards because of someone else.

I recently had a classic case of doubting myself and considering changing the way I do things. And it wasn’t until I had a conversation with my leader at work I realised I didn’t need to change a thing.

As you know, I have a part time job helping people with their personal insurance. It’s a job  giving me the flexibility to do the work I enjoy most, which is writing for myself and others while being at home with the kids. It offers the balance I need at this point of time.

In the last few weeks, I received my insurance renewals and I suddenly became the customer I speak with nearly every shift. My premium had gone up substantially (despite my staff discount!) and even though I knew why and had expected a change… I needed to speak to a consultant to make some changes to bring the premium down.

So I rang and joined the queue and spoke with a consultant who, to put it nicely, shared little personality and was taking my call because it was their job. They did nothing of what I had learned to do on my calls to ensure the customer felt valued and confident in the decisions they were making.

After making this call, instead of patting myself on the back for my different tactic of talking to customers on the phone, I critiqued my phone manner and thought, I need to change the way I converse with customers. I’m not doing it right.

So silly. But my mind literally thought I had been putting too much into my calls and I needed to ease back on the friendliness. #faceslap.

It wasn’t until I had a random interaction with my leader, she told me she had been listening to my calls. I was encouraged from her comments about how I could easily engage with a customer. My previous leader had said similar sentiments and had given me quite high scores for my calls. (Yes we get marked on them and on compliance) I had doubted I’d get the same feedback with a new leader because you never know if they’re going to think the same or different.

When my new leader encouraged me about my call quality, I realised I had been wrong to think I needed to change my standards because someone else did it differently.

In no way am I indignant about what I do or how I do it. I learn something new every day. And you’ve got to remain coachable in any job, even if you do some parts really well.

But there is a difference in getting the job done, and getting it done with a smile on your face which ALWAYS comes through on the phone or when you deliver a particular service. Being genuine is a standard that should never be lowered.

With my penny dropping lesson, I don’t need to doubt how I do things. I can still put my own flavour on it and own it.

So if you come across an experience that has questioned your standards or how you do things, don’t change anything until you’ve considered the negative repercussions of making that change.

You never know who is watching (or listening) as you do and what it could inspire them to do differently in their life.

Ever had an experience where you’ve considered lowering your standards? I’d love to know what it was.

It Takes a Village to Help a Village

Rainwater Tank takes a village to help a village

Earlier this year, you may remember I wrote about a school in Kenya that was in desperate need of a rainwater tank. The rainwater tank was to help the village by supplying fresh drinking water to the kids and their families. It also provided a local solution to help the kids stay in school, rather than skip it to make multiple 10km round trips (made daily) to fill their bucket for their families’ water needs.

It takes a village to help a village and through your support of my blog, I was able to donate my commissions for the month of January and February to the project. If you donated personally or bought a pair of earrings from Mosi Mtoto, thank you. The Mama Paulina School of Hope not only got their rainwater tank, but the recent down pours have helped to fill it, allowing the kids to fill their buckets from the tank.

The images are hazy due to the old camera used, but look at those happy faces.

The needs in this world can be so great, but I believe when we are moved by a cause and we intentionally step out to help, great things can be accomplished. When we gift together, it’s amazing how the multiplication of little donations can grow to build something big.

I’m so grateful to Nat from Mosi Mtoto who has created a conduit for those of us in Australia, to help small projects like this one. These kids are poor and this rainwater tank has made their lives a little easier.

Choosing The Best Handheld Shower Head For Your Needs

0
best handheld shower

The best handheld shower head will differ from person to person. There are a variety on the market that will suit your needs. It’s just a question of finding the one that will suit the aesthetic of your bathroom and offer the right spray and pressure variances for your preference.

Handheld shower heads are the most popular shower head installed in bathrooms worldwide. They have become the main shower head of choice. The flexible hose allows for ease of removing from the wall and spraying wherever you need.

These shower heads make it effortless when cleaning all areas of the shower area. And many of these shower heads can be adjusted to suit the needs of the individual showering.

There are points to consider when choosing the best handheld shower head for your needs. Here are a few considerations to ponder.

Choosing the Best Handheld Shower Head For Your Needs

What to consider when choosing the best handheld shower head for your needs

Size and shape of the shower head

Handheld shower heads can come in circular or rectangular shape. Circular is by far the most popular style chosen as it generally can have the spray adjusted.

circular handheld shower head the plumbette

Smaller shower heads tend to give a more direct flow, rather than a spray experience. A wider, rounder head can spray a larger surface area than a rectangular head.

Adjustable spray settings

Many of the handheld shower heads on the market can give a spray experience to suit all showering needs within the household.

If you’re a creature of habit and prefer to have the same shower setting every time, this may not make a big impact on your decision.

Colour

Chrome is the most popular colour choice for handheld showers. They can come in other metallic colours, but they are limited in their adjustment settings. Matte black, gold and white are available to consumers to purchase to suit the tapware colour in the bathroom.

Bundled with a rain shower head

There are some tapware brands that can bundle a rain shower head and handheld shower in the one installation. It includes a diverter so there is choice on which shower head you wish to use. It’s important if you decide to have two shower heads to purchase a mixer tap with a diverter or else you will only ever get water through one shower head.

Take note of the WELS Scheme

A 3 star rated shower rose will spray 6 Litres to 9 Litres per minute. The WELS Scheme shouldn’t be confused with water pressure as the quality of the shower head fitting can still be water efficient, yet give a decent pressure experience. The more stars on the WELS rating, the better it will be for your water bills. However, if you do find a handheld shower head that doesn’t give the best WELS rating, your plumber may be able to install a restrictor.

Tap Location

There are clever ways to install the tap for your handheld shower head. The mixer lever can be installed on an adjacent wall or to the far lower side of the shower head to ensure the first spray doesn’t hit your arm when you turn the tap on.

Smooth or rippled hose

Each shower head will come complete with a hose. Many have a smooth hose, which makes it easy for cleaning and less weight when holding the hand shower. Rippled hoses offer a textured look and can allow for more easy and flexibility of movement in the shower. They are susceptible to bursting though. The hoses can be changed to get your desired look and function.

Try before you buy

Reece Bathroom Life Stores and their larger show rooms have a spray booth where you can test the shower to feel the spray and weight of the shower in your hand. You can learn how easy it is to adjust the head to different settings.

Here are some handheld shower heads to consider. Dad and I used to install a lot of the Posh Solus MK3 Handheld showers because of their price and quality. Many of these handheld shower heads have a 10 to 15 year warranty.

10 Reasons to Choose Matte Black Tapware For Your Bathroom Renovation

0
Matte Black Tapware by Kit Haselden Photograhy

If you’re not sure whether to get Matte Black Tapware installed into your home, you need to consider these 10 reasons why you SHOULD include it into your renovation.

This post has been written in collaboration with Meir Australia

When the Matte Black Tapware phenomenon started a few years ago, I wasn’t riding the train. In fact I was pro chrome all the way.

But 2 years later since writing my post about the pros and cons of black tapware, I’m jumping on board.

I love the simplicity and boldness of a matte black mixer. The longevity of the trend is one which won’t wane and I’d say it’s here to stay for a while yet.

If you’re trying to decide between tapware colours, here are 10 reasons to choose matte black tapware for your bathroom renovation.

10 Reasons to Choose Matte Black Tapware For Your Bathroom Renovation

1. It is cost effective

When choosing a coloured tap, you will pay considerably more than a chrome tap, which is more readily available and still a popular choice.

Black tapware is priced between chrome and other metallic tapware, making it a cost-effective alternative when looking for a point of difference with tapware in your bathroom.

2. It goes with a variety of bathroom styles

Matte black tapware can be installed in a variety of bathroom styles. From boho to traditional to contemporary and industrial style bathrooms, black tapware will fit right in. Even the steam punk style bathroom can do well to feature matte black tapware with its copper accessories.

3. It can modernise a bathroom instantaneously

If you have a bathroom that needs a modern update, matte black tapware is your friend. It will instantaneously update a bathroom in need of a renovation.

4. It’s readily available in conjunction with chrome

Most tapware brands will come in a choice of chrome or matte black, making it readily available from your local plumbing supplier.

5. It can make a statement

Black tapware stands out and can be the only statement you need in your bathroom to give it a focal point. When teamed with a pastel or lighter splashback, your matte black tapware will standout for the right reasons.

6. It goes with a variety of colour schemes

Whether you’re a fan of all white bathrooms, or a monochromatic colour scheme, black tapware will fit right in. For all other bold colour choices like teal, millennial pink, sea foam and even your pastel colours, black taps will go beautifully with this colour scape.

7. Easy to change when the trend sways a different way

No one can predict when a trend will sway, but it’s safe to say black tapware is here to stay. But if it ever did become less popular than it is today, it’s easy to change over. Unlike tiles and fixtures, tapware can be disconnected and replaced with a different metallic colour of choice.

8. It can match other accessories in the bathroom

One of the benefits of installing chrome tapware was the ability to match it with the accessories in the bathroom like the plug and waste, bottle trap, towel rails and even the toilet roll holder.

Matte black accessories are readily available to match with your black tapware, creating a cohesive look in the bathroom.

9. It’s an affordable focus in an all-white bathroom

Bathroom renovations can require a big outlay of cost and one way to keep the project budget friendly is to choose a white bathroom scheme in the way of tiling and bathroom fixtures. Install matte black tapware and you will have a bathroom that won’t look quite stark and will fit in within your budget.

10. It looks fabulous

I’ve never seen a bathroom with matte black tapware that I’ve never liked. You can bank on black taps being a hero feature in your bathroom, no matter the style or colour scape of your bathroom.

Hopefully you’re no longer sitting on the fence to include matte black tapware into your bathroom renovation. It truly will give you an amazing finish to your space.

Book Review: Homebody by Joanna Gaines

0
homebody book review

I’ve been building quite the collection of home and interior books over the years to display around my home and to enjoy the style inspiration from a different point of view.

‘Homebody’ by Joanna Gaines has been on my must own list since its release. I bought it the week before Mother’s Day as a treat for myself and I’m glad I did.

homebody book review

‘Homebody’ is a book designed to create a home you never want to leave just as the title suggests. If I lived in any of the homes Joanna styled, I wouldn’t want to leave them either.

The guide by Joanna Gaines (one half of the Fixer Upper duo) essentially covers the different decorating styles and how they can be played out in the interior and exterior of your home.

It’s written and formatted in an easy to read guide. I almost feel like I’m one of the clients in Joanna’s design studio as I read this book. She shares simple tips anyone can replicate in their own home… but with their own flavour.

interior styles homebody

Joanna shares in her book how no house she has styled sticks to one foundational style. It often incorporates a few different styles to create an eclectic look.

The book has helped me know how to style an area in our home I’ve yet to develop. I have an antique which I want to put on display, but I haven’t known how to do it with our modern home. ‘Homebody’ gave me inspiration on how to address this problem and I will share it with you on the blog in the future.

Who the book is good for

I think this book is a great resource for anyone who has made the decision to build or renovate their home. It’s a visual guide for those who don’t know what styles they like or those who don’t know how to mesh a few styles together to create a cohesive look throughout the home.

The images are quite neutral in the book… so if you’re looking for bright, colourful interiors, this book is not going to give you that inspiration.

kids room homebody

But if you want designer tips on making your home more homely, Joanna shares insights of projects she’s completed. She even shares images from her own home. There is also advice for each section of the home where design obstacles may occur.

entryways homebody

Homebody is a delightful read. I read it in one afternoon with a cup of tea. It’s worthy of being a coffee table book guests can reach for time and time again. I know I will when I need inspiration for the blog or even for my own home as our family evolves through the seasons.

You can buy Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave from all major book stores.

Go Live Your Best Life – Good News About My Eye

0
live your best life

Yesterday was a good day.

It was a day off from my work shifts after working 5 shifts straight since Saturday.

It was a day to get the girls flu injections which has been on my list to get done since last month.

I also got to have lunch with Jacob without the kids.

It was also the day I got to see my neurosurgeon. The appointment was to compare MRI scans to track growth of my meningioma, which was found earlier this year. I also got to see the results of the CT scan, which would show a clear image of the size and location of my meningioma. The scan also showed its proximity to my optic nerve. The optic nerve is what controls our eye sight.

So the good news is there was no change with the size of the meningioma. So as expected, it’s slow growing.

Secondly, the CT scan showed it’s not currently near my optic nerve, so in terms of location and symptoms, there is no need to have surgery this year. I have time to plan for surgery in the future.

I will need to have regular MRIs – one every 6 months to monitor growth. My next one is booked before Christmas. Happy Christmas to me. Ha!

I will have to have surgery at some stage, but I won’t be needing it this year and it could be pushed out for a few years, providing I don’t have symptoms of loss of vision in my eye. I will have regular appointments with my ophthalmologist to check on this too.

For me, this news was a relief. I had put on hold a few things – like our trip to New Zealand, in case I needed to cancel due to surgery.

I’ve also had meetings where I’ve agreed to take on more writing work… and I’ve crossed my fingers that I wouldn’t have to decline due to my health.

Yesterday also confirmed the need yet again to get second opinions and to be decisive about my own health. I know the risks and I’m confident in my decision to wait.

As my neurosurgeon said yesterday, I’m ‘stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea’, but I trust him and my gut feeling to wait which has been simply from wisdom in considering the risks.

On the way out of the appointment, I was told to keep living my best life and so I certainly will.

Thank you for the messages yesterday and over the last few weeks asking for an update. I know you’ve been eager to know my results as well.

I’m also going to take on board the tips you’ve shared with me in relation to being comfortable when having an MRI. This is now going to be routine for me for a while.

Bathroom Galleries to Inspire your Bathroom Renovation

Research for renovation ideas are done mostly online these days. While magazines, brochures and books can be referred to from time to time, images shared online is where most renovation inspiration is derived from. Sometimes, online searches can bring up bathrooms from years ago and it can be hard to find current and recent bathrooms to inspire your design. I’ve come up with 8 Bathroom Galleries to inspire your bathroom renovation, but this post will be updated as more galleries with inspiring images are found.

The best thing about these galleries, are not only are they online, but they will often detail the brands of taps and fixtures used so you can make a note of what was used to recreate a similar space.

You can also follow other boards that have done all the work for you, featuring the type of bathroom you need inspiration for.

Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

If you enjoy a chunky cookie, you will love these double choc chip hazelnut cookies. The mix of milk and white chocolate chips with hazelnuts is a delicious combination.

Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

Hazelnut chocolate is one of my favourite blocks to devour. It’s not uncommon for me to break off a few rows.

I’m not sure what it is about hazelnuts, but they really are a match made in heaven with chocolate. Plus they are good for you. Who knew there were so many benefits to eating this particular nut? Healthline says hazelnuts are full of nutrients and packed with antioxidants!

My grandma used to make hazelnut heart shaped cookies which I LOVED. They were a rarity because hazelnut kernels are expensive, but when combined in a biscuit, the taste is one I can’t get enough of. It was always a treat to receive those baked hazelnut heart biscuits.

My choc chip cookies recipe is a no fail recipe I’ve used from a Family Circle cooking book. I’ve just added a few ingredients to make the cookies to my liking.

Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

If you’re after a cookie with a difference, do give these a try. Might be a delicious baked good given to mum for Mother’s Day.

Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

Tips For Making Double Choc Chip Hazelnut Cookies

  •  Buy hazelnut kernels without the skins (can but from Woolworths for an extra 25 cents)
  •  For less chunk, chop the hazelnuts before mixing into the cookie batter
  •  The cookies will spread and will look like homestyle cookies
  •  Keep in a container for up to 2 weeks (if they last that long!)
  •  Will keep in the freezer for 4 weeks, with biscuits laid on baking paper

What it’s Like to Have a MRI Scan and CT Scan

0
What it’s like to have a MRI Scan and CT Scan

In the last three months I have had two MRI scans and one CT scan. I’m sure there are others who are more experienced in writing this post. But it was the post I wanted to read when I was given a referral to have an MRI. So I’m sharing my experience of what it’s like to have a MRI Scan and CT Scan, from someone who likes to be in control of their own environment.

When I was told I needed a MRI, I googled what it was like to have one. I’m not usually claustrophobic, but the MRI machine looks a bit intimidating.

I have read news stories where things have gone wrong (why do our minds always think the worst?!) and my concern has always been about fitting inside a machine, with limited space.

The thought of being rolled into a narrow hole, within a machine is not my idea of fun.

I don’t get claustrophobic unless I’m in a situation where I can’t control it.

Getting stuck in an elevator is a fear for me. It’s happened twice to me and I can’t say I’ve liked the experience.

Or getting stuck in a ride. I started to inwardly panic when the submarine ride at Disneyland stopped for 10 minutes in the dark! I’m not sure whether it was part of the attraction or something else was at play. Of course my mind went to the worst and I panicked we would be stuck on the ride and would miss our flight home.

And those cave tours where you have to belly crawl through tunnels – you won’t see my signing up to any of those anytime soon.

Yet, crawling under a house or within a roof cavity or in a ceiling duct to install plumbing never worried me. I think it’s because I knew how to get in and how to get out. I was in control and could maneuver myself through the escape route.

When you’re having an MRI, it’s controlled by the radiographer or technician behind the window.

You can’t roll to your side to crawl out. You have to lie on the bed which is raised and then rolled automatically into the MRI Scanner and you have to be still while the machine does what it needs to do to get images of your body.

You can choose to get sedated. I chose not to as I had hoped my motherhood exhaustion would allow me to sleep, uninterrupted for 45 mins.

It didn’t work.

The first time I had my MRI scan done, I was the last one for the night and assumed I would relax the moment I laid down.

I had to change into a gown, take off all my jewellery and fill in an extensive form. I had to fast for two hours prior.

I had a cannula put into my arm where contrast liquid was injected to help with visibility.

I wore ear plugs and ear phones (or ear muffs, I can’t remember!) to protect my ears from the noise. The noises are loud – like a bass sound which is constant and then it will change to a higher pitch.

I also had a washer placed over my eyes. I could hear the radiographer through the intercom and they could hear me. I was also told to hold a squeeze ball which is a call button to alert them if I wasn’t feeling well or was getting claustrophobic during the scan.

My scans went for at least an hour each.

I used essential oils to help me (lavender, rose, balance and geranium). I put them on my feet before I left home.

The moment I was rolled/wheeled into the machine, my eyes could sense the room from being bright to dark. I did start to panic, but I focused on my breathing and concentrated on singing songs in my head. I have no idea why, but Shout to The Lord came to mind and I sang that on repeat while getting my scan. I had to accommodate the tune with the rhythm of the MRI machine. That song became quite the earworm in my head.

Some MRI scans will play music. I didn’t have that with either of mine.

The second time I had my MRI scan, I knew what to expect. I was wheeled in and out a few times which concerned me but I didn’t feel the initial panic creep in like I felt with my first scan.

If you know you don’t do well in small spaces, you can ask your GP for medication to help you or the team can sedate you for an extra charge. If you enter the MRI and feel you can’t go on, squeeze the alert ball. That’s why it’s there. We don’t always know how we will react until we face the situation at the time. Even if you’re not claustrophobic, it can be quite daunting if you don’t know what to expect.

I have a friend who also has to get routine MRI scans done and she assumed she’d be fine due to being a mum and yearning for quiet time to have a nap. But this didn’t work for her either and she gets tablets from her GP to help keep her calm while she gets her scan done. There is no harm in taking what you need to get through your scan.

What It’s Like to Get a CT Scan

The CT Scan was less scary than the MRI. Nevertheless I did feel shaky when I laid on the bed and was told about the side effects of the iodine injection. My side effect was a warm bum. I always get anxious about side effects. What if I’m the random that gets a new side effect never experienced before?

What it’s like to have a MRI Scan and CT Scan
I was able to take a photo for the CT Scanner, but not the MRI as other patients were scheduled straight after me.

The CT Scan isn’t as fearsome to look at as an MRI. I’d describe it as a mini version of an MRI. Only my head needed to be in the scanner. It didn’t take as long as the MRI.

Now I wait to see my neurosurgeon mid May to compare scans and go from there.

Have you ever had an MRI or CT scan before? Got any tips to help with nerves for those that have never had one before?

Plumbing in a Fridge – Fridges With an Ice And Water Dispenser

0
plumbing in a fridge

Are you looking for tips on plumbing in a fridge? Learn from our experience purchasing a fridge to fit into the exiting kitchen cavity.

Six months ago we bought a new fridge. We chose to purchase a model without an ice and water dispenser for a few reasons

1. Our fridge cavity was limited in space and depth.

2. We didn’t have a water supply available to where the fridge was located.

3. We use a boiling chilled water filter tap and filter jug for our drinking water needs.

plumbing in a fridge

One of the most common questions I would get as a plumber was how much it would cost to run a water line to the fridge so the owner could use their ice and water dispenser. I didn’t want to be rude, but my answer was how long is a piece of string? Or more specifically, how far away is your fridge from your kitchen sink? There are so many variables quoting on jobs that haven’t been inspected in person.

But maybe you have found yourself googling the same question on plumbing in a fridge. Rather than tell you a cost, how about some checks as your existing kitchen layout may not work for a fridge that requires a water point in the first place. For new build kitchens, often the plumbing can be arranged during rough in to provide a water point. For existing kitchens, here are some points to consider.

Plumbing in a Fridge – Fridges With An Ice And Water Dispenser

Space and Location of Fridge

The first thing you need to check is the dimensions of the space cavity for your fridge. This will limit your options somewhat if your kitchen was built more than ten years ago.

how to plumb in a fridge

French door fridges have been around for a while, but not all kitchens allow for them.

A French door fridge requires room for their design. Our house is only 14 years old, yet the space allowance for a fridge is quite small.

We realised we weren’t going to be able to fit a French door style fridge, without compromising on fridge capacity.

Instead, we upgraded to a larger model, but modernised to a finger print resistant, stainless steel top mount fridge. (We purchased the Westinghouse Top Mount Fridge in Stainless Steel. It’s no longer available but check out some similar here)

If you’re keen to install a fridge with an ice and water dispenser, check if your plumber can run a water line to the location of the fridge. (Water line can be run through the roof and dropped down the wall, underneath the floor or concealed inside cabinetry)

If it’s a difficult run where other appliances are in the way or there are other obstacles, you may be better off purchasing a simple fridge design like we did, and installing an under sink filtered tap water unit.

how far is fridge from sink

If a water line can be run to the fridge, you need to consider this next tip.

Space for stop tap, valve and filter

When plumbing in a fridge, there must be an allowance for a mini stop top, water filter and pressure limiting valve. Sometimes these can be installed at the back of the wall cavity behind the fridge or on the inner wall cavity.

Plumbing in a Fridge – Fridges With An Ice And Water Dispenser

Depending on the size of your fridge and the minimum clearance required around the appliance (some require a 50mm gap), you will need to determine with your plumber if the plumbing installation will suit your fridge requirements.

An alternate and better solution is to install the plumbing in a cupboard next to the fridge. Use a hole saw to create a hole in the side of the cupboard and feed the water line to the fridge as needed. This also ensures you have access to turn off the stop tap if there is a rupture or leak, and ease when changing the water filter.

Fridges with no plumbing required

You can purchase a fridge with an ice and water dispenser that doesn’t require plumbing. This can be another solution for your filtered water needs. However, the cons with this design is the tank has to be manually filled. There have also been comments where the first cup of water is not cold and can have a fridge taste/smell to it. It’s not a common complaint, but one to still consider. Maybe test before you decide on this model.

Power Surge Protector

When you purchase a new fridge, it’s a good idea to also buy a power surge protector. This ensures if there is ever a sudden loss or surge in power, your fridge won’t be damaged. I purchased the Monster Power Surge protection, which has the outlet located on the bottom so that when it’s plugged into the power socket, the Fridge power plug doesn’t stick the fridge out.

monster power surge protection

If you require help plumbing in your fridge, organize a call out from your local plumber first to check if the installation is possible. This call out can save the inconvenience of returning a fridge you can’t install or having a fridge taunt you with water dispensing and ice making facilities you can’t use.

Does your fridge require plumbing? What style fridge do you own?

My Corner Desk Space In The Master Bedroom

0
corner desk space

It may surprise you to learn I have two workspaces in our house. I converted the lounge room (which we rarely used) to an open office space when we found out we were pregnant with Phoebe. But I also have a corner desk space in the master bedroom.

corner desk space in the master bedroom

The reason for the two spaces was specifically for my job. I had to have an office where a door could be closed and privacy could guaranteed.

My open office was not going to work, although after having a home assessment, I was told we could have made it work if it could be blocked with a screen. This option didn’t eliminate noise. Our open plan house means noise can be quite loud. I needed a space that was quiet and could be away from the sound of my children so I could concentrate.

When we went to create a corner desk space in the master bedroom, Jacob and I had to swap furniture from one side of the room to the other.

We also rang our electrician to set up outlets for a phone line and the internet in our bedroom. This was originally in our kitchen and had been an eyesore on the kitchen bench.

The space before we got the furniture

It was around this time last year I started working from home in my new corner workspace and I love it.

I wanted it to look minimal. I made some key decisions on furniture and tech equipment to utilise the small amount of space. I chose an all in one computer and opted for a wireless mouse and keyboard.

The chair is a new addition as I have been wheeling my current office chair from one desk to the other. I had my eye on tan leather office chair from West Elm. But the $400 price tag was a bit hard to swallow, so when I saw Kmart had a PVC style for $59, I opted for this one instead.

My corner workspace is minimal and I’ve styled it to suit the rest of the bedroom. It’s a space I look forward to working in.

The plan was to eventually have one workspace… but so far the setup is working well. I like knowing what I have to concentrate on at one desk and where my focus needs to be at the other.

If you’re looking for Ethical Mother’s Day Gift Ideas that have been handmade and will make a difference to the artisan who has produced it, you will want to peruse this gift guide.

Every year when Mother’s Day comes around, I have a good idea of something practical I need that can be bought and given as a gift.

Sometimes I’ve requested a surprise because those gifts have made the best memories.

Most mums are happy to receive a sleep in and time with her kids, which are things money can’t buy. But a gift is always appreciated and when one has been carefully selected from an ethical supplier, it’s even more treasured.

I have worked with a few business’s this year, and their main purpose is to make ethically produced gifts more available. A purchase made from these stores will make a difference to someone’s life. It may even support another mother who is determined to provide for her family.

If you’re on the lookout for ethical Mother’s Day gifts, here are some of my favourites – ones I’d love to unwrap myself.

When you buy a LOVEbomb bangle, you’re also assisting with the safe land clearance of where these bombs fell, as well as supporting artisans to provide for their family. Each LOVEbomb bangle comes with information of how it has been created.

This Buffalo Bone Inlay Box is visually stunning and would make an ideal jewellery box or simply a décor piece. It’s black and white design caught my eye. This box was made by Noah’s Ark, which began as a single-room workshop in a family home in Moradabad, in northern India. It has now grown into a thriving fair-trade marketing organization.

8. Recycled Sari Throw $74.95

I love bright colours and these Recycled Sari Throws will certainly add personality and colour to the interior of mum’s home or be simply a blanket she can cuddle under during winter.

These throws have been made from recycled sari remnants which have been patched together to create a unique throw. No throw is the same, but the patches have been carefully selected to create a cohesive pattern.

The throws have been made by Prokritee who works with eight businesses in Bangladesh. They employ more than 1,500 female artisans, breaking the cycle of poverty by giving vulnerable women the chance to make a living.

The ethical Mother’s Day gifts in this collection are affordable and will make a difference to the person who has made them. It can be hard to choose which product, because they all support worthy causes. But choosing just one can make all the difference to a family’s life. And if we’re going to appreciate our mums, why not buy an ethical gift that will appreciate someone’s skill too.

7 Ways to Decorate With Plants in the Bathroom

7 ways to decorate with plants

If you are looking for ways to update your bathroom, without having to fork money out for a new renovation, decorate your bathroom with plants. The last few years have seen an increase greenery in the bathroom and it’s become a key trend in interiors. Of course, there needs to be a little more thought than whacking a pot plant in the corner of the room. I’ve found 7 ways to decorate with plants in the bathroom to give you some ideas on how you can achieve a greener bathroom.

plants in the bathroom

In order for your plant to survive in the bathroom, there needs to be enough light. A window sill is a great place to place a plant in the bathroom. Alternatively you could hang a plant across the window to create some privacy. The trailing plants adds a bit of jungle life to this retro-style bathroom.

Why not group 3 or more statement plants in wall hung planters to create a visually pleasing look? Use staghorns or ZZ plants to recreate this look.

Place a large plant pot of mother-in-laws tongue next to the vanity basin. Mother-in-laws tongue, also known as snake plants, are sturdy and easy to care for. They can thrive in low light and only need to be watered every two weeks or so. This is one of the best plants to have in the bathroom.

Create a feature plant wall. The best part of this feature wall is you will feel as if you are bathing outside in nature, in the privacy of your own bathroom.

Place plants on the corner of the vanity bench or next to the basin. It’s often the first place people think of when introducing a plant to the bathroom. If your vanity doesn’t get a lot of light, remember to move your plant to a window occasionally so it gets the light it needs.

A timber stool can become a sturdy plant holder in the bathroom. Make sure the plant is smaller than the stool to create visual balance.

If you have a bath shelf/tray, consider styling it with a small pot plant, and let the leaves hang over the bath. This is a great idea if you have limited surfaces in your bathroom.

Best Plants in the Bathroom

The best plants to have in the bathroom are Boston Ferns, Philodendrons, Cast Iron Plants, Spider Plants, Orchids, Bamboos, Pothos, Peace Lily and ZZ Plants because they can withstand low light and high humidity levels.

Here is another great post on plants that will thrive in the bathroom.

Three Nails And A Hammer

0
three nails and a hammer

What can be built with three nails and a hammer?

Not very much, my mind replies.

But that was all that was needed to kill an innocent man.

Three nails, a hammer and a cross.

Small things can impact one person’s life greatly.

Small things, like a pebble dancing across the tide, can have a ripple affect on many.

We’re told not to sweat the small things in life. But small things can alter a situation positively or negatively.

Small things can change someone’s life.

Here are some small things that can make a big impact – whether good or bad.

A hateful comment from a stranger.

A diamond ring in a blue box.

Conception.

A planted seed.

A lone piece of LEGO in the carpet.

A thorn on a rose.

Inhaling the sneeze from a colleague who has a cold.

A kiss.

A splinter.

Chocolate chips in a cookie.

One cancer cell.

A Panadol.

A piece of egg shell in a muffin.

An o ring in a tap spindle.

No o ring in a tap spindle!

The key for your car.

An ingrown toenail.

Termites.

A mouse in your house.

A blown fuse.

Baking powder.

A spark from a match.

Small things hold weight. They can make our lives better or worse.

A small thing can turn into a big thing if we don’t control it. And we don’t often understand it’s purpose until we reflect in hindsight.

The Easter message is one that is understood in hindsight.

It may be an insignificant holiday in a long year, but it’s a wonderful example of how small things, with the intention to destroy, were turned around and used for good.

It took three nails and a hammer to nail Jesus to a cross.

And yet God allowed those small things be part of the bigger picture. Our eternity.

It was a simple plan to use one to reconcile all to Himself.

I’m so thankful God could use those earthly tools, with intent to ‘finish’ and destroy, as a key part in the miracle for our eternal good.

three nails and a hammer not finished quote

What hope we can take from the Good Friday and Easter Sunday message!

God can use the little you have and turn it into something beyond your imagination.  Whatever the fragments. Whatever the pieces. They can be used for greater good even if you’re not sure how.

If He can do it with three nails and a hammer, just think what He could do with what you give Him.

Easter may have started with three nails and a hammer, but it didn’t finish there. Our salvation was built on what Jesus did on the cross on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Easter for 2019 may well be over, but don’t cruise through this long weekend not knowing how much God loves you. His intention was for peace and reconciliation. Who knows what God can do through you, if you let Him.

Happy Easter. xx

Easter Home Decorating

Easter home decorating

Easter home decorating was never a thing when I grew up. But now, it’s quite common to see a bunny and a few egg decorations around the home in anticipation for the Easter holiday.

Easter decorations for the house

I bought my decorations a few years ago, and bring them out a month before the Easter long weekend.

The kids get into the decorating. We love to do a bit of craft and Easter baking to enjoy all the food this time of year brings.

Using the same decorations each year means less landfill and of course more years to enjoy the items you own that only come out once a year.

Easter home decorating

Our houseplants have been ideal for our Easter egg decorations. In the past I’ve grouped sticks together for an Easter centerpiece.

decorating the home for Easter using a plant and egg decorations

This year, I’ve kept the Easter decorating minimal and only in our dining area. It’s in full view as soon as you walk into our home, and come Monday morning, they will all be put away in the cupboard for next year.

If you’re looking for an easy craft to make with the kids this Easter, with minimal fuss and mess, you have to make these Easter Egg Flowers.

Easter Egg Flowers

I love crafting with my girls. It’s my ideal way to play and spend time with my kids.

It’s unusual for the school holidays to start before the Easter long weekend, but it’s been ideal as we have been able to enjoy all the Easter festivities and craft.

I made these Easter Egg Flowers last year for a kids church activity. I used confectionery sticks with the kids to prevent stabbing injuries with the bamboo skewers (workplace health and safety comes first when working with kids!).

You can ascertain which sticks will work with your kids. The bamboo skewers are much easier for the kids to ‘spear’ their flowers and chocolate Easter Egg though.

Easter Egg Flowers

All you need to make these Easter Egg flowers are

  • Bamboo skewers/ confectionery sticks
  • Mini Solid Easter Eggs
  • Cupcake case liners of different sizes, colours and patterns
  • Blu-Tack
  • Scissors for cutting the liners

Easter Egg flowers ingredients

To make the petals

  1. Flatten each cupcake liner. Fold in half and then into thirds like a pizza segment.

Easter Flowers

2. Use scissors to cut a petal shape by rounding the edges.

Easter Petals

3. Open your cupcake segment to reveal a flower.

Easter Flowers

4. Layer your flower petals to create contrast.

To make the Easter Egg Flowers

  1. Use a small amount of Blu-Tack to create a stopper on the stem (bamboo stick). The petals will fall down the stick otherwise.

Pierce each cupcake liner flower (larger first and then smaller liner).

Add your Easter Egg to the top of the stick. Make sure the kids don’t push too hard as it will split the egg. You will need to supervise this part to ensure no injuries!

My girls decorated the outdoor plant with their creations. They could also be used in an Easter Egg hunt outside. The skewers are firm enough to be staked in the ground. This may avoid finding lost chocolate eggs in the garden a year later. Haha!

How to Organise Under a Kitchen Sink Cupboard With Limited Space

Under the Kitchen Sink Cupboard When There is Limited Space

This post has been written in collaboration with Fusion-Loc

Pinterest is a trove of inspiration on how to organise under the kitchen sink cupboard.

While the images are ‘pretty’, they aren’t the most practical and the majority don’t take into consideration the plumbing underneath your sink.

All storage options placed under the kitchen sink cupboard should be easily removed so a plumber can effortlessly access the pipes when needed.

If the kitchen sink has a separate boiling and chilled filtered water tap, the space in the cupboard can be limited.

kitchen sink undercupboard storage

I have a Zip Hydrotap and the appliance takes up half the space under kitchen sink. Proper air circulation must be provided for Boiling and Chilled water units to ensure it operates correctly. This means I have to have a minimum clearance of a 50mm air gap either side and 300mm above the undersink unit.

air clearance around zip hydrotap
Air Clearance around Zip Hydrotap

This has meant I’ve had to think vertically with my organising solutions.

Organise Under the Kitchen Sink

Tips on how to organise under the kitchen sink when there is limited space

The two tips I have when organising under your kitchen sink when you have limited space are:

Keep it minimal

Most people keep their cleaning products under the kitchen sink. I don’t. I keep them on the top shelf of my pantry to ensure no child can ingest them. It’s a habit I’ve kept since I had my babies and even though my girls are older, my habit is a hard one to break.

Some products, like my dishwashing detergent and dishwasher tablets, are now stored under the sink. If you don’t have young kids, keeping your cleaning products to a minimum will ensure you don’t have to store so much underneath.

TIP: Do a full clean out and only keep what you use. Chuck away anything out of date or hasn’t been used for a very long while.

Think outside the square

As I only have half my cupboard space to work with, I’ve had to get creative and put storage solutions on the inner wall and door of my kitchen cupboard. I have used accessories from Fusion-Loc to organise my kitchen sink cupboard.

Fusion-Loc accessories

The suction utility hook is ideal for hanging items like the dust pan and broom, and other utensils I store under the kitchen sink like our fly swat and gloves.

Fusion-Loc on door

The shower caddy is the perfect size for holding the dishwashing detergent and brush.

Under the Kitchen Sink Cupboard When There is Limited Space

What makes these storage options ideal is they are away from the plumbing and can be easily removed without damaging the surface of my cabinetry wall and door. Just make sure your door can close with your items hung off the door. Measure a clearance on the door so you can fit the Fusion-Loc accessories holding your items, as needed.

Fusion-Loc Under the Kitchen Sink Cupboard When There is Limited Space

Many under sink cupboards will have varied plumbing installations and the organisation tips will need to be adjusted to suit.

For other storage options, I have this plastic drawer from Bunnings which holds more gloves and dishwashing tablets. The basket on top holds other dishwashing brushes, a water spray (to water our indoor plants) sponges, all tools needed to service the Zip Hydrotap and the Fusion-Loc Suction Pump.

basket underneath kitchen storage

It’s a good idea to also store any allen keys that your plumber may need to use to service your kitchen mixer tap.

10 Black Freestanding Bath Tubs

10 Black Freestanding Bath Tubs

The freestanding bath tub is still a sought after fixture in the bathroom. Most commonly installed in white, it certainly adds elegance and style to a bathroom, space permitting. Black freestanding bath tubs are a bold choice and will dominate attention in a bathroom. This unique colour way is distinctive and pairs well in a black and white bathroom. In fact it certainly makes a visual statement in a bathroom that needs instant impact.

Black Freestanding Bath Tips

• A black freestanding bath tub demands attention. Don’t let it blend in a dark bathroom. Allow it to stand out. Choose pastel or lighter tiles so your bath is the hero piece in the bathroom.

• Do consider the waste outlet location. Some freestanding bath tubs will only come with one waste location – either in the middle or at the end of the bath. The outlet location needs to be known before the plumber roughs in. It makes installing the bath easier at fit off.

• All stone and ceramic baths should have extra floor support to sustain the weight.

• Black freestanding bath tubs work well with all coloured tapware, but the best choices are chrome, gold or brushed metallics.

• Make a note of manufacturers’ cleaning specs as some cleaners can be harsh on the black enamel. You want your bath tub to remain black, not a faded shade of grey. Although, it can be re-enameled in the future.

Book a Weekend Away. It Will do You Good.

0
book a weekend away

We should make a habit of going away for a weekend every now and then to break up our routine and recharge the batteries.

But it doesn’t always happen because often the weekend can be just as busy as a week! Or the budget just doesn’t allow for it.

It’s been harder for us to do weekends away this year as I have been given work shifts on Saturdays and Sundays.

It actually works well for the moment with Phoebe in Kindy two days a week, but it does break up the weekend a bit. Weekends are meant for family time for us… but work gets thrown in the mix and the weekend can be gone before we know it. Being intentional with our days can also mean more organisation on my part. But I know the benefits are worth it as a weekend away can do so much for our family.

The moment I knew I had a spare weekend on my roster, I booked two nights away at the Gold Coast. We are members of the Accor Vacation Club and I had points that needed to be used up before the 31st May. It just so happened there was a 2 bedroom apartment available on the same weekend we were free. This was a miracle because I didn’t realise it was the first weekend of Easter school holidays! It was meant to be for us.

We are pretty simple to please when it comes to weekends away. If there is a pool and the beach nearby, our family is happy.

swimming in the pool

The girls could have quite easily swum in the pool all day. But Jacob and I love being in the waves and the girls always have fun at the beach, even if they complain of sand in their togs!

burleigh heads

On Saturday we went to Burleigh Heads. The beach was a bit rough as was the floor – covered in shells! The girls were happy enough to stand at the waters edges as the waves hit us with their frothy foam.

We made the rookie mistake of forgetting the buckets and spades, and we went to one shop which we were sure would have some, but they had sold out! We just had to be creative in the sand. And we did so Easter style.

After a swim and play at the beach, we had a fish and chips picnic. Kids just love picnics. I need to remember this in future.

We headed back to our hotel and swam in the pool for a couple of hours. It was so good not to be on my phone or the computer and enjoy the swim and spa.

Our hotel was a block away from Pacific Fair. The girls were adamant about spending their splurge money, so off to Kmart we went.

I had to tell Phoebe she didn’t have enough money to buy this and her LOL Surprise.

This could also be one of my Mother’s Day presents.

After dinner we had to get a photo under the rainbow!

Today, we had more swims in the pool and checked out. Our favourite beach is Greenmount at Coollangatta. It seemed to be everyone else’s favourite too. It took us half an hour to get a park.

weekend away

But a swim in the glorious protected beach was amazing. Also it wasn’t rough under foot like Burleigh was.

We made a stop home for dinner.

And now the weekend is over, it’s going to be the school holiday/work from home juggle.

15 Ways to Treat Yourself This Easter Without The Calories

15 ways to treat yourself this easter without the calories

Most healthy eating plans go out the window when Easter comes around.

Well I know it does for me.

healthy eating quote

While I don’t plan on forsaking the chocolate this Easter, I do like treating myself less with food these days. My recent health situation has made me more aware of what I’m consuming.

I was recently asked by a friend if I still took part in my Child-Free Tuesday Treat days. I haven’t been sharing my sugar-laden treats on Facebook. And honestly, I still do have the odd treat… but I’ve tried to lessen my sugar intake. Instead of food treats, I’ve gone with an experience instead.

Recently I’ve been treating myself to a healthy lunch and watching one episode of a TV series on Netflix. That has been a treat in itself as I don’t usually stop for lunch.

So far I’ve watched Dirty John and You. I need to start a new series because I find I look forward to watching the next installment of a show and it disciplines me to have a break in my day.

I could just keep working and working and working on my days without the kids. And I’d wolf down those sugar laden treats as my lunch in the hope it would energise me to be productive.

However those child-free days can offer a break for me to do something I enjoy. And so I’ve explored other ways to treat myself instead with less calories!

If you’re wondering on how you can treat yourself without the calories this Easter, I have come up with these suggestions. For me, a treat is something new or an escape from the now. It could be a new ritual I enjoy.
