Get Your Own Custom Designed Front Door Mat From Shut The Front Door Mats

custom designed front door mats

For Christmas, my mum gave me our very own custom designed front door mat.

In truth, I didn’t need another door mat because we had just updated the front of our house for Handyman Magazine. I had invested in new mats for the styling of our front door.

But this front door mat was different and a really thoughtful gift, because it’s a quote I have had up in my house for a long while.  Mum supported a small business for Christmas and I loved unravelling this gift on Christmas Day. It now sits at our front door and I love it.

Finding the right door mat can be hard. I always like a door mat that is welcoming with an “Oh Hello” inscription. They are not always easy to find, so ordering a custom designed front door mat through Shut The Front Door Mats eliminates time finding the right mat. You can get your own inscription, without having to try to find one in stores or online.

Finding the right length of door mat if you have a double door can be hard too. But not with Shut The Front Door Mats. They’ve got new sizes released this year.

The most common custom design door mat seems to be using the family surname on the mat, which I think is cool. It would make a great housewarming present.

I also love the different ways ‘hello’ or ‘welcome’ can be said around the world. Bring a bit of your homeland to your front door. It’s another creative way to welcome guests to your home.

If you’re a business, why not get your company name printed on a door mat to sit at the office front door? It looks professional and sophisticated.

I am contemplating getting a large mat printed with ‘Nice Underwear’. Too cheeky maybe? 😉

6 Investments For The New Year

0
Investments for the new year

I love the promise of a New Year. In fact, seeing a New Year in, another Easter, another Birthday and then another Christmas is a privilege denied to many.

So when a New Year rolls in, it’s a good opportunity to think about life. To think about what made the previous year great and what can be worked on to make the New Year even better.

For 2019, I want to grow what I had in 2018. I thought I’d share these with you as maybe you can relate or they may help you as you contemplate how you’d like your 2019 to unfold. And maybe you still need time to nut out what you want for the year ahead. February could be your new January.

Last week was a trying week for me mentally. I don’t know whether it was holiday blues, that time of month or exhaustion (it could have been a combination of all three!) where I just felt down about what I do here and with my style blog. You can read the post about doubting myself here.

Nevertheless, when I sat down and thought about what I want my 2019 to look like, these are the investments I want to make.

1. Invest in my Relationship with God

I personally think this should be on everyone’s list for the year, but I also understand not everyone has the same convictions as me.

Last year, I was tenderly reminded many times I needed to Be Still and Know. Be Still and Know what? Be still and Know that God was and is in control. This was easy for me to nod my head to, but not easy for the striver in me to do. 2019 will be the year where I start each day with God. The time will be regular, but not restrictive.

Putting time aside to read, pray and meditate will bring about a calmer and more wise Bec. It will also give me clarity about next steps. And I hope it will calm my heart to truly BE STILL and KNOW that everything will work out how it should.

2. Invest in my Marriage

When I was interviewed for my job back in March last year, I was asked how my work hours would impact my family life and marriage – especially when I was juggling the work I do for my blogs and freelance writing. I advised having every Friday off would give me the necessary balance I needed. Friday nights would be designated as a date night with my husband.

Unfortunately, the date nights never eventuated despite the intention.

I intend to change that this year.

Bec and her Husband

Again, this will be hard to do when I have limited childfree hours and night times offer a chance to catch up on work. But scheduling fun and connection with your life partner is important. I’ve proven time and time again, I still meet my deadlines when I make the time for fun. Date nights will be no different.

3. Invest in experiences with Phoebe before she goes to school next year –  Plus one-on-one time with each of my girls.

This is my last year before all my children will be at school. I remember when Esther first went to Kindy and I couldn’t comprehend how I’d spend my days with all the kids out of the house at once. (I had visions of spending the day at a day spa and drinking a hot coffee in peace – I may still do this in a few weeks time!)

Having Phoebe in daycare allowed for two child free days for work and this year will be no different, although this year, she will attend Kindy and the days are shorter.

Me and Phoebe

The same free days will be available, but this year I intend to savour and enjoy those days we have together. I want to do fun things like craft workshops or head to the museum. (They are so much easier to manage with one child!)

I also want to do mummy and daughter dates with my older two. They really enjoy one –on-one time with mummy. As do I.

bec and girls

4. Invest in more experiences and less stuff

Going to America unleashed the travel bug within Jacob and I. We are determined to make the most of the kids’ 5 year passports by utilizing frequent flyer points and our timeshare.

travel more in 2019

I was amazed at how well the girls travelled – especially when on a long flight. The kids are at a good age where they remember holidays. I much prefer to invest in experiences and memories, than cluttering our home with the latest toys. Again easier said than done because I may enjoy those surprise toys cause I totally want to know what’s inside.

5. Invest in my Personal Development

Whether it’s blogging, writing or working in my part-time job, I want to make the most of every opportunity I’m given. Working has helped my personal development, but I know investing in myself by learning new skills will help with the work I do.

I enjoy blogging, but the blogging landscape has changed dramatically where blogs are no longer just blogs. They’re online stores and they offer courses to make you better at this, that and the other. I want to keep sharing what I love and what I know. I’ve got ideas for books and I hope to nut out how to produce them and sell them on the blog. I’d like to do videos too. This is an area I want to develop.

6. Invest in friendships

After reading Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon, I am determined to have more dinner parties.

whiskey in a teacup

Jacob and I used to have people over all the time, but after we had Phoebe, we were too exhausted to organise anything. Even now, the impromptu dinner date is a has been because schedules are so busy. Dinner dates have to be organised well in advance. This year, I want to do less saying ‘lets catch up’ and more booking dinner dates in the diary so they actually happen. Even one dinner party a quarter is better than once a year.

So there are my 6 investments for the New Year. I need to print the list so I can look at them daily.

What will you invest your time into this year? What are your goals for the New Year?

This post has been written in collaboration with Sleep Republic

It’s been a year since we started sleeping on our Sleep Republic Mattress in a box and I have to say it has been the best investment for our sleep.

sleep republic mattress in a box

One year on, the mattress is still giving us the best support and I’m no longer waking up with an aching lower back. Even this week, Jacob remarked how much he loves our Sleep Republic mattress and what a blessing it has been to us.

I’m a fan of the Sleep Republic Bamboo sheets as well. I was sent these earlier this year to review and they are the best sheets I’ve slept on in terms of comfort, texture and breathability. I do look forward to the week we have these sheets on our bed when they get rotated for washing and placed on the bed the following week.

Sleep Republic Sheets

Another standout product from Sleep Republic is their gel visco + microfibre pillow.

It’s the most versatile pillow on the market because it can suit a range of different comfort levels with multiple layers inside that can be added or removed.

How to Hang Christmas Wreaths and Stockings on Glass Doors

how to hang christmas wreaths and stockings from glass doors

This post has been written in collaboration with Fusion-Loc

Now that we are officially in December, it’s time to put the Christmas tree up. Most would have put their tree up on the weekend. We put ours up a bit earlier this year, but on the weekend, I did a bit of extra Christmas decorating and wanted to share this hack with you on how to hang Christmas wreaths and stockings on glass doors.

how to hang christmas wreaths and stockings on glass doors

I’ve had my tree up for a few weeks. But there has been a pain point with my Christmas decorating, and that has been working out how to hang up the girl’s Santa stockings.

We don’t have a mantel and our tree is always set in the corner of our living room next to our glass sliding doors. We don’t have a spare wall to place hooks on the plasterboard to hang our stockings. To be honest, having hooks on the walls are not something I want on my walls all year round either.

In the past, I have used sticky stationery hooks and even cheap suction hooks on our glass sliding door. But the moment the stockings were placed on the hook, they would eventually fall to the ground, deeming useless for the purpose for which they were used.

With our tree up and the stockings laying under the tree on the ground, it was really bothering me that I hadn’t found a solution for hanging our stockings.

before: santa sacks under the tree

It wasn’t until I was putting together these Christmas prizes that I thought… maybe a bathroom hook could be the answer to my problems!

My dilemma was finding a hook that could attach to glass and be easily removed after Christmas. I also didn’t want a sticky residue left on the glass. The Fusion-Loc suction hook was the answer to my Christmas decorating problems.

After

I already had three hooks to use. I was also sent some round hooks, which I decided to use on my front door to hang two wreaths.

It literally took me less than 5 minutes to hang the stockings and a similar amount of time to hang our Christmas wreaths on the front door.

How to Install a Fusion-Loc Suction Hook to Hang Christmas Wreaths and Stockings on Glass Doors

It really is easy to install Fusion-Loc suction hooks to the glass door. Follow these simple steps for installation:

1. Clean the windows with some methylated spirits and allow the glass to completely dry.

2. Get a measuring tape and spirit level to work out correct spacing of the hooks. (The spirit level was used for the 3 stocking hooks to ensure they were installed in a straight row)

3. Press the back cover onto the glass, with the arrow on the base plate facing down. Recheck your measurements to ensure its been placed in the middle of the window.

4. Pump the tool 6 times to get a strong vacuum seal onto the glass.

5. Slide the hook onto the base plate and hang your wreath.

Here’s a video I shared on Instagram on how I installed the hooks.

Have you ever thought about using bathroom accessory hooks to hang your Christmas decor like Santa stockings and Christmas wreaths on the door? If you have glass doors, (can work on non-porous doors too) then the @fusionlocsuctionproducts Robe hooks are perfect. In this video, I show how I used the round fusion-loc hooks to hang up my Christmas wreaths on our doors. The vacuum fusion technology firmly fastens the hooks to glass. Best of all, once Christmas is over, I can remove the hooks and there will be no sticky residue that I will need to scrub off the windows. I can then install my wreaths next year when Christmas rolls around again with the same hooks. I will be sharing a blog post how I’ve used the hooks for the front door and near our Christmas tree. Once Christmas is over, slide the hook off the base plate. Then use your finger nail to move the inner valve to release the suction and you can wiggle off the base plate. Easy peasy.

Store your hooks with the Christmas decorations for next year’s use.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have FINALLY found a solution to my Christmas decorating problems.

The Fusion-Loc suction hooks are available at Bunnings Warehouse for $9.95 for one hook or $19.95 for two hooks, including the suction pump tool.

The square hooks can hold up to 13kg and the round hooks can hold up to 8kg.

Adhesive discs aren’t needed for glass installation, but they are available for porous surfaces.

I’ve used the hooks in our bathroom to hang our towels, but had never considered using them to hang Christmas wreaths and stockings on glass doors.

There is More to These Plumbing Magnets That Meets The Eye

0
plumbing magnets brisbane

If you reside in Brisbane, you may have seen these plumbing magnets

plumbing magnets

When you call the number, it will direct you to a call centre owned by Plumbing Detectives Pty Ltd. This name may (or may not) ring a bell to you if you have watched or read the news. Plumbing Detectives Pty Ltd have had their share of dramas with their operations in NSW and have received media attention for their dealings with customers down south. The QBCC also issued a warning on 27th July to be cautious of any dealings with this company in QLD as they weren’t licensed to operate here.

This week I received the same plumbing magnets in my letterbox and my Facebook was pinged with notifications and emails to share about them as a post had gone viral about this company.

Instead of resharing what has gone like wildfire online, I did my own investigation and made a few calls.

Firstly, I called the number on the magnet and I had a genuine conversation with the company who sent the magnets. They told me their license number for QLD which is 15103654 under the name of Serving You and they also gave me their electrical license, which was not printed on the light bulb magnet, but should have been advertised.

Essentially, when you call the number on the magnet, your details are taken and are given to the licensed plumber in the right state to attend to your plumbing need.

The plumbing license number for Serving You, which is an entity of Plumbing Detectives Pty Ltd but a different director, was issued by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) who issues licenses to plumbers so they can conduct plumbing within QLD.

After my call to The Plumbing Detectives, I called the QBCC as their media release back in July states “The QBCC warns all persons in Queensland dealing with Belal Dassouki or Plumbing Detectives Pty Ltd to exercise extreme caution. The QBCC urges consumers who have contracted with or had any dealings with Belal Dassouki or Plumbing Detectives Pty Ltd to contact the QBCC on 139 333.”

The QBCC consultant I spoke to advised since that media release, Plumbing Detectives and/or the director of Serving You has met the requirements to operate in QLD and has therefore received their QLD license to operate.

Which means the magnets you have received are legit and you will have a licensed plumber attend to your plumbing call. The real issue is they have advertised with the incorrect license number on the magnets in QLD.

My concerns in relation to licensing have been sent to the Master Plumbers Association of QLD, who are aware and will follow up these concerns with the QBCC.

If you no longer have the plumbing magnets and are looking for a licensed plumber in QLD, please use the directory offered by the Master Plumbers Association of QLD. You are more than welcome to contact me directly and I can give you names and numbers of plumbers in Brisbane to various suburbs that I know will assist with your needs.

For all other areas of Australia, contact your local Reece or Tradelink store for recommendations or check the Master Plumbers website within your state.

Gifts to Give When People Don’t Want Anything

0

Do you have anyone in your family that says they don’t want anything for Christmas? I do. And this year, I’m one of them because I really don’t need anything and we will be away anyway, experiencing our first overseas holiday with our kids.

But… I do like the surprise element of blessing someone with something so they know they are loved and appreciated, especially at Christmas.

So this post is specifically ideas of gifts to give when people don’t want anything.

Personalise It

Milo Tin
Personalised Milo Tin $10

Personalising a box of chocolates or a tin of Milo is a great gift idea for those that don’t want anything. Firstly, it will be consumed and secondly it’s personalised with their name making what would be a simple gift, extra special. Check out your local stores to see what can be personalized

Head to Cotton On for Personalised Milo
Head to Kmart for Personalised Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate (in store only)
Head to Big W for Personalised Cadbury Favourites
Head to Myer for Personalised Toblerone

Gifts Cards That Give to Others

So many charities at this time of year can offer gifts that give to others in poverty or need. CareGifts, Tear, Gifts of Compassion and World Vision are some charities you can purchase a gift that will bless those who need the gift of say education or clean drinking water as some examples.

Experience Vouchers

From my experience, those that don’t want anything for Christmas really don’t want physical objects to clutter their homes, so the gift of experience can be an ideal gift. Some ideas for experience gifts could be a cooking class, gold class movies, floating experience (on my bucket list), dining or day spa experience.

It’s Busyness, As Usual

0
It's busyness as usual

It’s less than a month till I go to Disneyland. Forget about the countdown to Christmas. The kids are reminding me every day how many days are left until we see Cinderella’s Castle. I can feel the excitement start to build as I tick each box off my to-do list. I punch the air as I complete each task before it’s due date.

It’s busyness, as usual in The Plumbette HQ. There is always so much to do before a holiday. And I am prone to adding more to my list so that when we get back for Christmas, we can ease back into reality that bit easier.

The end of school term and of course Christmas is certainly drawing near. I thought I’d share a few things I have been up to behind the scenes of this blog.

I do a variety of work when it comes to blogging as this space is not the only place I write on. While I do try to remember to share posts on Facebook, not all of you get to see this because of algorithms.

I thought I’d also share a few things you might like to see and get involved in this year too?

Today, I headed to Bunnings to deliver my #itsinthebag handbag with hygiene essentials for a woman in need. I learned about Share The Dignity at the Kids Business Bloggers Brunch and vowed to get involved this year. When I shared what I was doing on Facebook, I was amazed at how much response was received and how others are now getting involved to donate as well. The generosity of people makes my heart soar. Bless you for getting involved.

I have also been creating content for other businesses and I’d like to make a shout out to two businesses that give me consistent work each month.

The first company I’d like to share about is Talk About Creative. I’ve been able to put my plumbing skills to use by writing content for other trade businesses who use TAC to manage their digital space to grow their business.

Some of the posts that have recently tested my skills though have been the flat lay posts for Temples and Markets which I have had A LOT of fun doing. If you are looking for a place to purchase an ethical gift this Christmas that supports the artisans who make them in Asia, do check out Temples and Markets. Here are just some of the posts I have put together for their blog.

The next shout out is to Kelly from Be a Fun Mum. When I first started blogging way back in 2011, I started reading Be a Fun Mum and was in AWE of Kelly.

I remember writing to her as a newbie blogger saying I had started a plumbing blog. When you see someone succeed with their blog, you want to know what works and what doesn’t.

Fast forward 5 years, Kelly felt led in her heart to ask me if I’d like to contribute as a writer to her blog. I remember the excitement of someone I admired asking me to write for their blog.

Over the last year or so, I have also been helping with the Facebook page. It’s been a privilege to work with someone who gets the blogging industry and supports another mum who is navigating the working/blogging/mothering landscape. Here are some of the craft and baking posts I have put together for Be a Fun Mum.

On Saturday, we celebrated mum’s Birthday early as I had to work on Monday night. I just love this photo of mum and the girls.

Grandma and girls

Mum and Dad have been helping me with school pick ups so I can get to events or simply complete an afternoon work shift I haven’t been able to change. The girls have a great relationship with their grandparents, and I have no doubt this will develop even more when we go away together.

The Grinch Premiere

On Saturday afternoon, we were invited to the QLD Premiere of The Grinch. We got to the cinema early so the girls could get their faces painted.

The Grinch Girls

When I asked the girls to smile, they got into character instead and literally put their Grinch pouts on. How fabulous is the face painting? However, as soon as we got into the cinema, Phoebe wanted her face paint off. I was so grateful for a mum I knew from our previous church, who was sitting behind me and offered me her packet of baby wipes. No matter how much I scrubbed it off, Phoebe now looked like The Hulk. She still has black in her eyebrows.

The weekend was a mix of catch ups too. This Ruby Chocolate Shake from San Churro went down a treat.

Ruby Chocolate Shake

On Sunday, Jacob and the girls put up the Christmas tree, while I had a much needed breakfast catchup with two close friends who I met through blogging. Both of them have had unexpected battles this year that have tested them on all fronts. 2018 certainly delivered some curve balls we didn’t see coming.

Christmas Tree 2018

And so that is a bit of what I have been up to. Oh and I forgot to mention I have been writing some posts for Styled by Bec too. It doesn’t get updated as much as The Plumbette though.

With only 4 weeks left of school, I’m sure they will fly and holidays will be here before we know it. This week I realised many of the 17-year-olds that graduated from high school last week were born the year I graduated from year 12 back in 2001. While it hasn’t made me feel old (ok, maybe a little!), it’s certainly another reminder how fast time flies.

Where are you at this time of year? Got any holidays planned for Christmas? How are you coping with the busyness of this season?

Our Navy and Mustard Bed Makeover

0
navy and mustard bed makeover

A bed makeover is never something I initiate often as the cost of buying linen is expensive.

But a recent quilt purchase meant I had to buy new quilt covers as our existing covers were too small.

Today, I thought I’d share with you our navy and mustard bed makeover, which I put together yesterday. First there is a bit of a back story to why I needed to update our linen.

Since as long as Jacob and I have shared a bed, we’ve always had a queen quilt on our queen bed. I had never thought to invest in a bigger quilt until this year when we had three frustrations in the bedroom.

The first frustration was I seemed to always hog the quilt. My tossing from one side to another would wrap me up like a burrito, leaving poor Jacob exposed to the cold.

The second frustration was with our quilt itself. It seemed to have shrunk after being washed, and no longer filled out the quilt cover. Our bed was starting to look a bit pedestrian as a result.

The third frustration was how I felt while sleeping under our existing quilt – especially in between seasons. I would wake up hot in the middle of the night and need to kick the quilt off, only to wake in the early hours of the morning and need the quilt on again because I’d be cold. I think this may have contributed to me hogging more of the quilt.

The frustrations prompted me to head to Kmart to get a new king size quilt. There was none available for what I needed.

So I headed to my next linen haunt – Pillow Talk, where I talked to a staff member and she told me which quilt was best for all seasons. I needed to find a quilt that was 300-350GSM.

She also advised natural fibres like wool, cotton and bamboo were going to be the best materials for my needs. (Our existing down quilt was 500gsm hence why I was feeling hot at night!)

bamboo quilt
Hilton Bamboo Quilt in King Was $229, now $149

My goal in purchasing a new quilt was buying one I didn’t have to change throughout the year with each change of season. But I wanted something that fluffed a little and wouldn’t have me kicking it off in the middle of the night. The staff member suggested a bamboo quilt, and the price made me step back. While it wasn’t as expensive as other natural fibre quilts, it was definitely not the amount I had thought I would pay for a quilt.

So I waited and kept waiting for a sale and a week or so ago the sale I needed saw me head back to store to purchase. But then I realised I needed to buy a new quilt cover because our existing queen quilt covers would no longer fit.

Hence the new navy and mustard bed makeover.

Navy and Mustard Bed Makeover

Now I love white. I did buy a white king quilt set when at Pillow Talk as I still LOVE my Gorman leopard print pillow cases and pom pom cushions and throw (you can see that look here), but I also like to have a spare quilt cover set for when I need to wash the covers and pillow cases. Instead of buying another white quilt, I wanted to buy a darker colour. When I headed to the Adairs Linen Lovers Sale, I created this look by using a navy quilt base and adding mustard and cream for contrast.

I couldn’t wait to show Jacob our navy and mustard bed makeover. And naturally I had to show you all too.

All our bedroom frustrations have been solved by simply purchasing a new king size quilt. The bamboo quilt was an investment, but it will last for years. The quilt has been perfect to sleep both with and without the air conditioning on.

Like all new makeovers, I love looking at the bed. It’s also the perfect excuse to get to bed earlier as well.

Please Don’t Ask Your Plumber to do This – Unlicensed Plumbing

0
unlicensed plumbing

One of the most infuriating parts of being a plumber is being asked how to do something they are paid and are licensed to do.

There are simple jobs (which aren’t always so simple when someone inexperienced tries to fix it) that can be legally done without a license, and most plumbers will be happy to share a few tips to assist.

These jobs could be changing a washer in a tap or changing over a shower rose or bath spout to changing the dropper valve in a leaking toilet cistern.

But when it comes to the jobs where a toilet waste has to be changed to suit a new toilet suite or some cold water lines need to be run or changing over a mixer tap… these jobs must be done by a licensed plumber. Even if Google shows you how it can be done.

I’m always happy to receive an email, message or text asking why a plumbing problem is happening and what can be done to fix it. I will ALWAYS recommend ringing a plumber – even for the simplest of jobs because

• They are licensed to do the job

• They will always complete the job in a shorter amount of time than you could

• You’re supporting a family business

• Some simple jobs may not always be so simple to your own eye. What may be the problem to you, may not be the cause. A plumber’s experience can fix the underlying problem to prevent it reoccurring.

Doing your own plumbing work can lead to big mistakes that can cost you money in the long run even if you think you’re saving on labour fees. The labour fees that you saved will go toward paying legal costs to defend charges against you when your unlicensed plumbing has been found out, let alone the fine you will be demanded to pay when found guilty.

skilled plumbers aren't cheap

Not all unlicensed plumbing installations go to plan either. Mistakes like this true example of renovating a bathroom, fitting it off and finding no water flows through the shower rose when the mixer is turned on is a classic case of why plumbing should be left to the licensed.

Testing is a crucial step a plumber knows must be done before walls can be sheeted, waterproofed and tiled. For the inexperienced, not completing this step can cost thousands to rectify and it’s expected a plumber should know how to fix it. In these cases, you’re lucky if a plumber will touch the job as they will need to put their name against work they haven’t completed. Also, they are in their rights to notify the local authority of unlicensed work that has been conducted.

Another common request is laying pipes for drainage and getting a plumber to make the final connection to the sewer. If plumbers are doing this, they need to stop because how can they guarantee what’s been laid has been done correctly? It will come back to bite them.

Asking a plumber to show you how to do their job will (and should) receive a big fat no response. They aren’t doing it to be unkind. They are doing it to protect an industry that requires a license to work in.

If you want to know how to fix the plumbing issues in your property, apply for a plumbing apprenticeship. Get your license. You will soon realise how important it is for plumbing to be a regulated industry. Asking a plumber to show you how to fix a major plumbing problem or install new plumbing to your property so you can save money shows more about your character, than the plumber saying no to your request.

Have a read of this before you decide to start doing unlicensed work. If you can afford a maximum penalty fine of $80,000 when caught, then do proceed to do your own plumbing without a license.

Why You Should Have Bottled Water For Emergencies

0
bottled water for emergencies

Yesterday morning Jacob greeted me as I rolled out of bed, ‘Wanna come have a shower with me?’

There was a pause as I considered my response, but Jacob beat me before I could reply.

‘Well you can’t because we don’t have any water. I’ve tried all the taps in the house and nothing.’

This really wasn’t what I wanted to hear after having a child home sick the day before with vomiting due to tonsillitis, and another child constipated due to not drinking enough water at daycare. Plus the heat from the previous days had prompted us to drink more water.

On top of that… there were only two flushes left (one for each toilet) and there were number two’s calling by more than one member of the family.

It was not an ideal situation to wake up to. I also had legs that needed shaving, hair that needed washing and I had run out of dry shampoo.

It turned out the water was off in our street due to a burst water main.

We weren’t the only ones waking up with no shower or a hot cuppa to start the morning.

A quick check on the Queensland Urban Utilities website stated the water would be out until 11:15am.

Thankfully, my BRITA Jug was full and there was enough water to fill Maggie’s water bottle for school. I also had a spare bottle of water in the fridge that we drank from, and there was enough to make Esther an electrolyte drink to build up her fluids from being sick the previous day.

But we needed more water and there was contents in one toilet that required another flush, because the last flush… well let’s not go there. It would have to sit concealed and door firmly closed until we got water.

After the school and work drop offs, I headed straight to Woolworths and bought a 10Lt bottle of spring water for $4 and some 2Lt bottles for the fridge. As much as we can complain about bottled water, in emergencies it really is a God send. This wasn’t really an emergency though, more an inconvenience but gave an insight into how much we really rely on water.

bottled water for emergencies to fill toilet cistern

The reason for the 10Lt bottle was to refill my toilet cistern so I could flush the toilet in case the outage would be longer than expected.

pouring water into toilet cistern

Interestingly enough, the QLD Government advises to have 10 litres of water per person in an emergency kit in case of disruption to essential services like water and power. This is enough for 3 days supply.

After our morning with no water, I’m making sure we have backup water supplies.

back up water supplies

If you have a full water tank, you’re half prepared as you can use this for filling buckets to refill toilet cisterns and washing machines. But for drinking, bottled water is a must.

Water mains can burst at any time and who knows what we are in for this summer and beyond after some of the storms that hit the northern hemisphere during their summer.

Thankfully, our water was turned on sooner than expected. That BRITA jug was refilled and the bottles of water have been stored away.

If water is shut off to your home for any reason, having bottled water for emergencies is essential.

As part of my emergency plan, I’m also adding dry shampoo. 🙂

Do you keep a supply of bottled water for emergencies? Had a water main burst in your street?

Make a Design Statement in the Bathroom Using Taps and Fixtures

Are you wanting to make a design statement in the bathroom and not sure what focal point to focus on? Why not let your taps and fixtures do the talking.

This post has been written in collaboration with Abi Interiors

Every bathroom requires a hero feature to add interest to the space. The rule of thumb is to have one design statement in the bathroom to ensure there isn’t a clash of competing components.

The most popular statements in bathrooms are created with tiled walls, floors or lighting.

But the taps and fixtures can be a budget friendly way to add a feature in a neutral bathroom.

In fact these hardworking pieces in the bathroom can elevate a bathroom instantaneously.

If you’re looking to make a design statement in your bathroom, check out these taps and fixtures from ABI Interiors.

Stone Basin

One can only dream of having a marble top vanity, but this can blow out the renovating budget tremendously. Why not think smaller, by getting a marble basin instead?

The Saba Stone Basin by Abi Interiors is elegant and its sealed finish makes it a worthy contender as a bathroom statement. The above counter installation is on trend and costs a fraction of the cost of buying and installing a marble top vanity.

Brushed Brass Mixers

Chrome and Matte Black are the most popular tap choices, so creating a statement when installing taps comes down to choosing an alternate finish.

Brushed Brass is elegant and versatile. It can stand out against a white tiled splash back and can look equally striking against black and grey. Brushed brass compliments any timber elements within the bathroom, making it a standout bathroom feature to consider.

Brushed Copper Dual Rain Shower Head & Hand Shower

A dual shower head offers a streamlined approach for installation and a minimalist aesthetic in the bathroom.

The Finley Shower Set will elevate your showering experience with a rain shower head, which evenly distributes water and a hand held shower for convenience.

No need for a double shower when the hardware in this combination offers a deluxe showering experience.

Circular Free Standing Bath

A free standing bath is one of the most popular bathroom fixtures used to make a design statement. If your space allows for it, go as big as you can, ensuring there is enough space for cleaning in the future.

If you’re after a showstopper, this circular Ukiyo Acrylic Free Standing Bath in Matte White will do just that. With it’s name meaning ‘floating world’, who wouldn’t want to float away in this vessel in their very own bathroom?

Abi Interiors Round Bath Brushed Nickel Tapware and Accessories

Most bathrooms will opt for a neutral colour scheme with the most popular being white.

While this makes it an easy backdrop to create a focal point, maybe you’re after understated sophistication? Brushed Nickel will give your bathroom a luxurious feel, without it over-dominating the space.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees DIY

These Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees are so easy and fun to make. I had been looking for bright Christmas décor to match with our artwork and advent calendar.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees

I didn’t want to spend a fortune, so headed to Spotlight and grabbed some felt, pom pom garland and foam cones.

When I brought my supplies home, Jacob was worried about what they would look like. In my head, I knew they’d look eclectically fantastic. But not all of my DIY efforts go as planned.

I did send photos of the finished product, asking if they looked like glorified Christmas penises.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees

He reassured me they looked great and were nothing like he imagined.

And they did not look like penises.

The girls adore them and have dibbed one for each of their rooms. We may just need to make more. I still have quite a bit of trimming that could be used up.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees
If you’re wanting to add some fun to your Christmas décor, you definitely need to make some Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees. You can go traditional with red, green and white. I have no doubt they will still look spectacular.

Materials

To make your Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees, you will need:

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees
Pom poms for the top are not pictured as these were an after thought.

• 3 foam cones (2 medium, 1 large)
• Different coloured felt
• Pom Pom Garland
• Spare Pom Poms
• Glue Gun
• PVA Glue
• Scissors

Instructions

Trace the cone on the felt. A rough guide is all you need. Cut the shape out and then glue one end of the felt on the cone and wrap around and hot glue the other end to create a seam.

Foam Tree Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees

If you have excess felt at the point of the cone, neatly trim it and glue it down. Fold and glue any leftover felt underneath the base of the cone. If you don’t have enough to fold down, the pom pom garland can be glued at the bottom to hide any foam not covered.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees

Glue a pom pom to the top of the tree.

Carefully apply PVA glue around the cone and wrap the pom pom garland. Don’t use the glue gun for this as the glue dries quickly and you will burn your fingers as your wrap the garland around. Layer with different colours and sizes of garland. Mismatching is great as it gives an eclectic feel.

Bohemian Inspired Pom Pom Felt Christmas Trees Instructions

Once completed, you can set your three trees on a coffee table or side buffet as I have done.

I’m pretty happy with the result and love how they compliment our painting and Merry Christmas garland.

How to Overcome Unsettling Circumstances

0
overcoming difficult circumstances

This time last year, I was very unsettled.

I was anxious about our future. Well more mine. What the heck was I meant to be doing? I felt like whatever I put my hand to, it didn’t bring the results I had expected. Our finances were not good – not for lack of working, because the work was there, but being paid for that work was another story.

Mid October last year, it had been 5 weeks since I had been paid. Even though I had practiced the business principle of not having all my eggs in one basket, the one basket that brought in the most income wasn’t coming through and it was stressing me out. The thing was it had happened many times before. The other eggs weren’t paying on time either which meant savings had to be relied upon to get through tough weeks.

I have lived through weeks, months… years where I would be told I couldn’t be paid on time, because the company hadn’t been paid themselves. My argument in my head was, ‘I’m not working for your clients, I’m working for YOU.’

The sad reality is too many businesses give work to people they can’t afford to pay. They wait for one payment to come through so they can pay their next invoice. Cash flow is non-existent. We hear people of living pay to pay, but there are also businesses that do this too. It can leave workers in the awkward situation of not knowing if they have a job or not.

Anyway, I persevered for a few years with my situation and then got sick of it and jumped.

I had NO IDEA where I was going to land. And that is always scary… but it’s the best part of the story because the unexpected can be better than the expected.

I wrote this post about change because I knew I needed to change my circumstances, but I didn’t know how. I felt like my options were limited.

A year has gone by and I’m in a much better place than this time last year. It’s amazing what can change in a year, but also how an intention on change and action can redirect the trajectory of your life.

When you feel like your options are limited, it’s time to brainstorm and open your mind to new things. Talk to friends and business people and get their insights.

I’ve been in my new job for 7 months and I remember when I first heard about it, I wrote it off because there was 7 weeks of full time training involved. How the HECK was I going to achieve that with three kids? Daycare days were limited, and after and before school care was at full capacity. Plus the cost of all the care would surely gobble up my pay! I didn’t know how I was going to juggle my existing writing work while working full time. It was going to be tough.

But I still applied, got the job and planned each week, with help from my village. And here I am 7 months in.

I’ve got new friends and colleagues, I’ve learned new skills and have had to embrace constant changes, because there have been a lot in my job.

I’m also in a much better position financially and I don’t have to worry about not being paid for weeks. I’ve been able to be selective of who I write for and have even dipped my toes into other writing avenues I had always dreamed, but never thought would occur.

Prayer was a major part of the change in my life. I had a lot of people praying for me. I was praying A LOT for me to work out what my next step would be. But God revealed each step as I needed it… and there are plenty more steps to take in the future because I know I’m not meant to settle where I am right now. But it’s where I’m meant to be at the moment.

Bec with gorgeous girls
Me with my gorgeous girls

Being an available mother to my children is important. Working from home also suits me so well. The balance is never easy, but I make it work.

working from home
Working from home, wearing a fascinator for spring racing at work.

One thing I have learned in this past year is change is only one decision away. But making a decision to change is much easier than stepping out to make that change.

If you’re feeling unsettled or anxious because your current circumstances are not how you planned, be open to new opportunities. As the saying goes ‘nothing changes if nothing changes.’ Don’t write off an opportunity or possibility because it may seem too hard. You don’t know if you try. Brainstorm solutions to the problems that stop you from what you want to do. If you really want to do a particular thing, you will find a way to do it.

Have you made any changes this year? What do you do when you feel unsettled?

Terrazzo Homewares – The Decor Trend to Overtake Marble

0
terrazzo homewares

Terrazzo homewares are the next big thing in home décor trends. We’ve seen it used in bathrooms, but now it’s also going to feature in homewares just like the marble trend a few years ago.

Can you remember when marble was the material of choice for homewares? I do! It seemed to be everywhere! It was used not only in benchtops, splashbacks, basins and tiles, it was created in homeware pieces like chopping boards, trivets, door stops and paper weights. I still have my marble cross trivet from Kmart in the kitchen.

It seems terrazzo homewares will do the same and trend in interior decorating. Having a small piece of terrazzo in your home may be the answer to incorporate this trend into your home.

Terrazzo homewares

If I’m honest, whenever I see a bathroom featuring terrazzo tiles I cringe. To me, it’s old fashioned and reminds me of shopping center floors. I think it will date. But there are others who love it and can’t get enough. In fact, Pinterest has seen an increase in terrazzo searches online and it has rocketed past other interior trends searched for on the platform.

If I was to add some terrazzo in my home, it would be in the minimalist form of a décor piece.

I have done the research for you to find terrazzo homewares that can be incorporated into your home. My personal favourites are the Miss Pots Planter Pouch and Terrazzo Wall Clock. Oh and the soap. That’s probably the CHEAPEST way to add Terrazzo to your bathroom without renovating it.

Terrazzo homewares

  1. Astral Shower by Wary Meyers Soap $24
  2. Miss Pots Terrazzo Planter Pouch $28-$38
  3. Terrazzo Dimple Tray $89.95
  4. Dusk Terrazzo White Pillar Candle Holder $25
  5. Terrazzo Poster Moon Mint $24
  6. Capra Designs Terrazzo Clock $155
  7. Linen House Terrazzo Quilt Cover Set $59
  8. Mezze Terrazzo Coaster Amalfi Set of 4 $14.95

So tell me, are you a fan of Terrazzo? Would you add any Terrazzo homewares to your home?

The Faces of Women in Plumbing in Queensland

The Faces of Women in Plumbing in Queensland

Nothing excites me more than networking with others – especially women in plumbing. This year I’ve declined or chosen not to go to events because I can’t do everything. We also have a big family holiday to Disneyland at the end of the year, so paying for tickets to attend networking events has been down the list of budget priorities when we will be networking with Mickey himself in couple of months time.

But gosh, after going to two events this week, I realised next year I need to make an effort to schedule these events in my diary. I forgot how good it was to network and talk and be open with each other about where we’re at when working in the plumbing industry – whatever capacity that may be.

Whenever I network, I love putting a face to a name and so I thought I’d share my selfie reel. These women are either qualified plumbers or manage a plumbing business (or both!). Some of these women I have known for years, and others I have only conversed through email or on the phone with our monthly Women’s Plumbing Alliance meetings. Some, I only met last night.

The first event I headed to this week was on Thursday morning at Parliament House. The Honourable Mick De Brenni  Minster for Housing and Public works and the Master Plumbers Association of QLD hosted a breakfast for women working in the plumbing industry.

Breakfast at Parliament House
I technically wasn’t sitting here but the light was terrible for the place setting photo!  How pretty is the table setting though?

Rachael Keiley, who was presented with Female Plumber of the Year for 2018 at the MPAQ awards (and who I got to sit next to at last year’s breakfast at Parliament House), shared her story of how she got into plumbing. I loved her message about women supporting other women in the industry and was nodding at everything she said.

Radmila Desic (carpenter) also shared a presentation which delivered some hard truths about women working in construction and statistics that we hope to see change more positively both now and in the future.

Always a pleasure catching up with Brisbane City Council Plumbing Investigator, Carlie Low

On Friday night, the MPAQ hosted a table at the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) awards, which I was invited along to. It was a fabulous night made even more brilliant because Penny Cornah, Executive Director of MPAQ won Achievement as a Business Woman in the Construction Industry. Penny has been driving change within the plumbing industry, working with the current State Government to protect plumbing licensing, how plumbers get paid and she has been a strong advocate encouraging more women to get into the plumbing trade. Well done Penny.

Here are just a few snapshots of the faces of Women in Plumbing in Queensland who I got to converse with on Thursday (up above) and Friday (below).

But first, an outfit shot of what I wore.

The dress code was cocktail, but it was at the Hilton and I decided to go for an in between cocktail and black tie look. The dress is from City Chic and was a good investment for my wardrobe.

There are so many more faces who I get to converse with through the blog, who make up the beautiful collage of faces of women working in the plumbing industry. They aren’t just pretty faces though. They are hard workers and each have a unique story of how they have successfully worked against the status quo.

If you’re a female tradie or work in a trade related business, do get out to events when you can. It’s not always easy when there are so many demands running a business or you have children to juggle.

Sometimes a break lying on the couch looks more inviting than having to dress up for an event. But once you’re there, and you start talking with others working in the industry, you will find similarities in your struggles. I can guarantee you will feel less isolated and more understood. You will also be motivated to get back to work… or atleast work until the next networking event!

A special thank you to MPAQ for reaching the isolated and making events available for all who are involved in the industry, whether small or large. Thank you for giving this mum a break from mum/work life, and to the lovely ladies who I got to dine and dance with last night.

The next networking event is the Melbourne Cup and World Plumbing Day in March 2019.

Do you try to get to networking events in your industry when you can? Do you recognize any of these faces of women in plumbing?

8 Bathroom Trends for 2019

0
top 8 bathroom trends for 2019

If you’re planning to renovate your bathroom next year, you will no doubt be researching bathroom trends for 2019 to help with your selections.

Each year when I research and compile this post, I’m amazed at what trends have stuck around and what ones have reared their head. I also preach – trends come and go, so it’s important to incorporate what you LOVE because you will be the one using the bathroom everyday. When bathrooms are being renovated on average between 15 to 20 years, it’s important to make selections you can live with.

But if you do want your bathroom to make it’s mark, these are the top 8 bathroom trends for 2019 to look out for.

8 Bathroom Trends for 2019

8 bathroom trends for 2019

1. Bathrooms will become more compact

Bathrooms will be more compact in 2019 with living spaces decreasing in size. This will be embraced by combining the shower and bath. However, this won’t compromise on space (ie small bath!) or style. Double vanities will be disregarded for a singular basin with more vanity bench space.

2. Wet Rooms will be embraced even more

The Japanese inspired wet room style of bathroom will become even more prevalent in 2019 as renovators and builders opt for a more open look for their bathroom.

3. Round is IN

When choosing your fixtures, round is IN. From circular basins, tapware and the popular circle mirror, fixtures that are round in shape will become more common. Even the round free standing bath will be an admired piece in the main bathroom.

4. Natural Materials aren’t going anywhere

For a few years now, natural materials have been a key trend in bathroom interiors, and this won’t change in 2019. Marble is here to stay and will be used on walls and vanities. Timber will still be popular, but coloured marble with a strong vein will be a widespread choice.

5. Terrazzo makes a comeback

Whenever I think of Terrazzo, I think of a shopping centre floor… but it’s going to be a popular feature in bathrooms for 2019. It’s already been embraced in current bathroom revamps this year and is predicted to make it’s mark in bathrooms in 2019. Terrazzo is  easy to camouflage a highly trafficked room so it works well in the family bathroom. It is a polarizing material to incorporate so if you love it, go for it.

6. 3D Tiles & Textured Tile Patterns add substance

Tiles are becoming more textured to give a 3D look. Think mosaics, herringbone or hexagonal tiles as a feature. Tiles that have an unusual edge and contrast will be sought for niches or a feature wall.

7. Coloured Basins add a pop of interest and colour

White basins will be swapped with the coloured variety. It’s like the bathroom trends from the 70’s will make a complete revival in 2019. Dusty pink and all shades of blue and green will be embraced when choosing the vanity basin.

8. White and Brushed Metal Tapware leave Matte Black and Chrome behind

White taps will be embraced more as the tapware colour of choice for 2019 (I shudder at this as they are a pain in the butt to service later on). Brushed metals in brass, chrome and nickel will also be popular. Matte black and chrome will still remain classics.

Some of these bathroom trends are a revamp from last year. It will be interesting to see which trends will get embraced the most next year.

If you’re looking to make a design statement in your bathroom for 2019, check out this post on using taps and fixtures to give that wow factor.

If I Just Get Through This…

0
if I just get through this

It’s been 7 months since I started my new job and I’m quite amazed at how this year has unfolded for me. No week is the same. In fact, every week is different as my shifts could be at night, on the weekend or during the day. I’ve learned to embrace each week as it comes. There are some weeks where my shifts are great and work in well with family life, and then other weeks where my shifts are grouped together, finishing late at night. I tell myself ‘If I just get through this…’ I will be rewarded with a few days off to focus on other work or having a rest. I often struggle with the latter.

Take last week as an example. I did two shifts in one day which meant I worked from 9am to 10pm last Monday to help a colleague out who had Uni exams. She was also helping me as she could take one of my shifts during the week which would allow me to have 5 days off in a row.

Those 5 days gave me time to get posts ready for Christmas. Like this one for Be a Fun Mum. And spend time with Phoebe as she loves hanging out with me at home. We’ve only got another year of this left before she heads to Prep…

me and phoebe
Me and my Phoebe.

The thing is last week wasn’t an isolated week where I thought ‘If I just get through this…’

I had the same thoughts over the second week of the school holidays when I had bronchitis and thought I hadn’t accrued any sick leave. I pushed myself to work my shifts, coughing and sometimes removing my headpiece with tears rolling down my eyes as my coughing wouldn’t remove the tickle in my throat.

That same week I pushed myself to go to an all day kids’ event at church so that Phoebe wouldn’t miss out because she needed a parent to chaperone her. It was another week of ‘If I just get through this…’

The reward would be that I had survived. I had gotten through the busiest part of the week and could relax, with no expectations beyond those within my home.

So far, my rate of getting through things has been successful. It might have taken me 4 weeks to get over being sick, but I got through. It wasn’t until I had a meeting with my leader that I found out I had 3 days of accrued sick leave I could have used!

But that is what we do as mums. We push through. Sometimes we have no other choice but to keep on keeping on.

This week I’ve had the same thought go through my mind, ‘If I just get through this’, as it’s a week of events, plus late night shifts and a school meeting bang in the middle.

While I’m not wishing away the days, because I genuinely enjoy what I do, I still struggle with the juggle of raising a family, working a part time job and running a business. The organisation needed for me to work requires me to be super organised. And this in itself can be exhausting!

All I can do is take one day and one week at a time. I will get through this, whatever ‘this’ ends up becoming. I’ve proven it time and time again. I can cope through busy periods, so long as I know there is a period of rest or a worthwhile result in the end.

Do you ever have thoughts of ‘If I just get through this’? How do you manage busy weeks?

Three Ways to Update Your Home Using the Ryobi Pressure Washer

RYOBI Washer and Patio Cleaning kit

This post has been written in collaboration with RYOBI

Cleaning the outside of our house is not usually on the agenda of spring cleaning… until we notice how dirty the exterior of our home is. A pressure cleaner is the best way to remove the annual dirt and grime that settles on the outer surfaces of our home, to bring it back to new. In today’s post, I’m sharing three ways to update your home using a RYOBI Pressure Washer.

I was gifted the RYOBI 2400W 2500PSI Pressure Washer and Patio Cleaning Kit to review on my blog. It’s been on our wish list for a while as each spring, we’d have to borrow my dad’s. Having our own pressure cleaner means we can get onto our exterior cleaning jobs straight away, and this Pressure Washer from RYOBI made the enormous cleaning task, easy.

Bec with RYOBI Pressure Washer and Patio Cleaning Kit

We have a light Colourbond roof, so the dirt can be easily seen in the grooves if we don’t clean it. Our house also backs onto a road, which means our back outdoor entertaining area can get filthy with a fine film of dust. It can also get splashed with paint when crafting or drips from ice blocks the girls will eat outside. The RYOBI Pressure Washer was going to be put to hard to work to get these areas looking new again. Here are the three areas of our home that got an update from using our RYOBI Pressure Washer.

Outdoor Entertaining Area

Every time I’d look at our outdoor entertaining area, I would mentally list it as an area that needed to be cleaned. Our furniture was COVERED in black dust as was the entire floor area.

Jacob and I removed all the furniture so that we could start cleaning the tiles. The Patio Cleaning Kit is ideal for undercover areas, where there is a large, smooth surface area to clean. I started with the Patio Cleaning Head first to remove the dirt and then changed the head to the turbo nozzle to remove paint splotches and other marks that needed a good blast to get rid of.

I also used the turbo nozzle to clean our concrete paved area. Here is a video of me using the turbo nozzle on the concrete sections of our paved area. The before and after results speak for themselves.

The last two weekends we have been busy cleaning the outside of our home. Our back alfresco area was in need of a good pressure clean! I can’t tell you how good it looks and feels when walking outside and seeing it look like new! In this video I’m using @ryobianz 2400W 2500PSI Pressure Washer (available at Bunnings). I also got the Patio Cleaning Kit which makes cleaning your patio a dream! I will be sharing a post in the coming weeks reviewing this pressure washer. But I reckon you will like watching the grime coming away from our concreted paved area. Roof

One of the main reasons I wanted a RYOBI Pressure Washer was to be able to clean our roof when needed.

Our near white Colourbond roof always shows the dust. It’s an annual job to pressure clean it, as rain alone does little to remove the dust.

The best thing about using the RYOBI Pressure Washer when cleaning your roof is the length of hose which enables you to reach further. The 8 meter hose can be unwound from the reel, which makes it easy to unwind when needed.

Indoor Rug

Our indoor rug has gone through a bit in the last year since we’ve owned it. It only cost me $69, so I’ve never been too worried about how long it will last, but I have noticed there have been marks on the rug which I’d wanted to remove so it would look less worn.

I saw a tip on Facebook of someone using a pressure cleaner to clean their rug. So I thought I’d give it a try on our rug and it’s come up beautifully! If you do decide to pressure clean your rug, make sure you do it on a warm sunny day, and first thing in the morning so the rug has time to dry.

Thoughts About the RYOBI Pressure Washer

The RYOBI Pressure Washer is easy to use. I found the pressure to be brilliant and changing between the nozzle and Patio Cleaning Head was simple. I love that it can be wheeled to wherever you need it to go. You can add detergent for a deeper clean, but I was happy with using water. The RYOBI Pressure Washer is $299 from Bunnings and the Patio Cleaner Kit, also available at Bunnings, is sold separately for $39.99.

front door cleaning

Since acquiring our RYOBI Pressure Washer, we have been cleaning the front of our house, the driveway, gutters and eaves. It’s definitely made our home look newer and fresher for summer entertaining. I’m grateful that this time next year, I won’t have to ring my dad to borrow his pressure washer. Our RYOBI Pressure Washer will be waiting, ready to be used again.

What outdoor jobs are on your spring cleaning list? Do you have areas that could do with an update with the RYOBI Pressure Washer?

8 Tips to Help Keep Your Home Well

rid your house of cold and flu

Whenever there is a change in season, you can be guaranteed a cold will come with it. And when one person brings a cold home, it’s only fair everyone in the home catches it because sharing is caring, right? Can you tell I’m being sarcastic? Colds SUCK. They really do. And despite my diligence with some of my prevention practices, I have had two bad colds this year. So I’m well acquainted with these cleaning tips to help keep your home well.

I have recently gotten over having a bad cold which developed into bronchitis and conjunctivitis which then turned back into a cold and I am now officially breathing through my nose and not coughing like crazy after two doses of antibiotics.

Whenever a cold is brought home by one of the kids or my husband, there are a few key things I do to try and prevent the spread. Sometimes its unavoidable.

If you’ve been cooped up with a cold at home, here are some tips to assist getting your home healthy again. I’m no doctor and PLEASE see a doctor if you can’t shake your cold or you start to feel worse.  These tips aren’t remedies and they won’t rid your house of cold, but they can help delay the spread of germs from one family member to another.

8 tips to keep your home well

Diffuse Essential Oils

These are my arsenal oils when someone brings a cold home. I love to diffuse essential oils in all the rooms and in my car.

essential oils for colds and flu

On Guard and Easy Air are placed straight into the diffuser. (I usually place 3 drops of each in the diffuser with water)

1 drop of Digestzen with Fractioned Coconut Oil is placed on belly buttons 3 times a day when green snot appears.

1 drop of Lemon, 1 drop of Frankincense mixed with fractioned coconut oil and applied to the throat and chest can assist with coughing. My mum gave me a roll on blend of Manuka oil (not pictured) and this with Easy Air on my feet gave me atleast 2 hours of respite while talking on the phones at night for work.

1 drop of Lime and 1 drop of Easy Air with fractioned coconut oil can be applied to the bridge of nose to help relieve a blocked nose.

All of these oils can be diffused at different times, depending on the needs of your family. If everyone is coughing, add Easy Air, Lemon and Frankincense to the diffuser.

If everyone has a blocked nose, diffuse Easy Air and Lime together.

If only one person has brought a cold home, diffuse On Guard which is known as the protective blend.

Open the Windows

If it’s not rainy or too cold outside, open the windows. The fresh air inside the home removes any airborne viruses lurking in the air. It flushes out stale air or stuffiness, which is not ideal when cooped inside the house with infected family members.

Change Pillow Cases and Air Out Pillows

Our pillows can accumulate over time with snot, saliva, dust, skin cells and makeup plus other nasties like dust mites. When colds hit the home, it’s ideal to change the pillow cases more regularly and air out the pillows. Check the date on your pillow and see if it’s time to replace it.

air out pillows

Also, give any European pillows an airing out. I usually use these to prop myself up at night so I can breathe easier when I have a cold. Any pillows that are used during the night when you have a cold should have the cases changed regularly and aired out too.

new pillows on bed

Clean Handles and Taps– Anything Hands Touch

When people blow their noses or sneeze into their hands, guess where their germs land? On anything that person touches. So think about the things in your house that are touched frequently with your hands. Think taps, door handles, light switches, knobs on chests of drawers – even the toilet brush handle! These should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly to prevent the spread of the cold in the house.

Replenish Soap in Dispenser and Hand Towel

Regular hand washing is a must when someone has a cold, so ensure there is soap in the soap dispenser and a fresh hand towel for drying hands.

Clean Your Toothbrush or Replace Your Toothbrush

After a cold, I usually replace the toothbrushes. After reading online about being more environmentally friendly, it’s encouraged to clean your toothbrush instead of throwing it away. I’m not going to judge what you do here, but just remember to do something with your toothbrush after you’ve had a cold. If you’d like a natural cleaner, add 2 tablespoons of water, and 4 drops of On Guard Essential oil in a glass. Let your toothbrush sit in this overnight and it will be ready to use again the next day.

Clean Your Basin Drains

This tip is gross, but it’s an important one which can benefit your family immensely.  When I had bronchitis, I was coughing up a lot of mucus, and often I would spit it out down our basin with some water. Consider cleaning your basin drains after someone has had a cold. Some bicarb soda, vinegar and a citrus essential oil can remove any bad odours and possible bacteria than can be breathed in when you’re brushing your teeth.

clean basin waste

Clean Your Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning Filter

Anything that assists in the circulation of air in your home, should be cleaned and even sprayed with anti- bacterial spray. Ducted heaters and air conditioners circulate old air inside the home, so if someone comes home with a cold, their germs can be spread throughout the home through the ducts. It’s more common for people to catch a cold from touching items that have been touched by the infected. But it can’t hurt to clean the filter. It will make your system run more efficiently too.

When you’re feeling poorly with a cold, a full house clean won’t be an option. Rest is really important. If you do a few of the above, you can hopefully stop the cold being spread from one family member to the other.

What do you do to keep your home well? Got any tips  that may help prevent the spread of a cold between family members?

How to Style a Bathroom Stool

how to style a bathroom stool, style your bathroom on a budget

If you have a new bathroom to style – or an older bathroom that needs a little something to give it an instant update, you can’t go past the bathroom stool. There are a variety to choose from and a number of ways you can style a bathroom stool.

how to style a bathroom stool

I don’t have a bathroom stool – well actually I do, but I wouldn’t class it in the variety of what I’m sharing about today.

I have a green IKEA Mammut plastic stool that is used multiple times a day for little people to reach the vanity basin to wash their hands and brush their teeth. It gets hidden under our floating vanity so it doesn’t jut in the way of traffic.

But just because I don’t have a modern looking stool, doesn’t mean I don’t wish for one. If you’re styling a bathroom in a house for sale or you’ve renovated and need to give the bathroom an earthy, yet modern look, the bathroom stool will be the perfect piece to add next to your freestanding bath.

A timber stool seems to be the most popular and it tends to be the most versatile as it can suit a range of different bathroom styles.

Their prices range from $29 to $300 for a unique bespoke piece.

My research online has found these stools to be quite popular. I’m not sure if watching The Block resurrects the sales of these pieces.

Nevertheless, here are some I’ve found available online.

how to style a bathroom stools

  1. Apex Stool in white from Pillow Talk $29-$39
  2. Mahi Tri Leg Stool from House of Home $169
  3. Alice Stool in Peppermint from The Block Shop $79
  4. Arzu Stool from Zanui $147.95
  5. Savannah Stool from Temple and Webster $69.95
  6. Natural Elm and Black Benson Stool (available December 18) $79.00
  7. Firenze Stool from Pillow Talk $109.95
  8. Nashua Stool from Zanui $94.95

How to Style a Bathroom Stool

There are so many ways you can style a bathroom stool. The most common way is grouping a selection of products to create a vignette.

The stool could have one stand-alone product – like a plant.

Some stools are styled with nothing on them. It depends how busy the bathroom is already.

The most common pieces I’ve seen styled on a bathroom stool are a candle, block of soap, bristle brush and rolled hand towel.

You can place whatever items you own on the stool. Choose items that differ in height to make it visually appealing. Odd numbers work well, but I’ve also seen two pieces work beautifully together.

The bathroom stool is a practical piece as it can work as another surface to place products on like your towel and soap as you soak into the bath. I know that’s how I’d use my bathroom stool.

Do you have a bathroom stool? Which bathroom stool would suit your bathroom?

I Pulled the Plug on Term 3 Early and Escaped to the Sunshine Coast

pulled the plug on Term 3 Sunshine Coast Getaway

Last Wednesday when I picked Esther and Maggie up from school, I surprised them by saying their schooling term had finished earl. I had pulled the plug on Term 3, two days out because we NEEDED a break. A shift swap and an unlikely roster schedule where I had 4 free days in a row made it the perfect time for our 2 night Sunshine Coast Getaway.

I don’t know about you, but every September I feel an urge to go away for a holiday.

Usually during the year we would have a weekend or two away and at least one week booked at a coastal location in September or October.

But this year has been unusual because I got a job and I have been doing a lot of weekend shifts. Plus we’re heading to Disneyland at the end of the year and money spent on a weekend away was consciously decided to be put towards our overseas trip.

Thankfully, unexpected finances came our way from my work, which meant booking a small getaway was doable.

No matter I was blocked up with a cold and had a persistent cough. If we didn’t do it now, there would be no other time until our overseas holiday.

It was meant to be because I booked the last two bedroom apartment at Oaks Oasis Resort Caloundra. I had heard good things about this hotel and it didn’t disappoint. The waterpark was fantastic for the girls. No need to be in the pool with them as the water is shallow enough for Phoebe (4) to swim in. Plus the slides made it heaps of fun and made bedtime a breeze with 3 exhausted girls eager for bed.

We visited some attractions while away too. Before we checked into our hotel, we went strawberry picking at McMartins Strawberry Farm at Bli Bli. After the recent strawberry scandal it became a must do for the school holidays. We all enjoyed picking strawberries, despite it being a hot day. Our strawberry sundaes were delicious and our pickings meant we would have strawberries for days… well at least for a few days the way my girls eat them!

On Friday, we headed to the beach. It was breezy! I have no idea where we ended up, but it was near the rock pools and the tide was out which made it ideal for looking around the rocks and collecting shells and seaweed to make sandcastles. I often forget how much my girls love being on the beach. The conditions weren’t ideal for swimming, but that didn’t matter. They wanted to create a city in the sand.

Bec and Jacob at Caloundra

After a few hours on the beach, we headed to The Ginger Factory. I love this place on the Sunshine Coast. I have memories of my parents bringing me here when I was little.

The Ginger Factory Sunshine Coast

Jacob and I had done the tour a few years ago when Esther and Maggie were quite young. I booked the train tour and overboard boat ride which the kids thoroughly enjoyed (book your tickets online to get 10% off – a family ticket includes 2 adults and 3 children which is not usual for a family pass). We had a lovely lunch and spent a small fortune on ginger beer, soft toys (Beanie Boos are our nemesis) and crystalised ginger treats.

decorate a gingerbread man at The Ginger Factory

There are a few things you can do at The Ginger Factory. We timed our visit so we could eat lunch. The girls loved decorating their own gingerbread man, which cost $5.95 per child.

After our Ginger Factory visit we headed across the road to the Nutworks Factory and bought some triple coated chocolate macadamia nuts. I also bought macadamia paste which is amazing on toast.

Nutworks Factory

On Saturday, the girls spent most of the morning swimming in the water park while I checked us out. We planned to head to Montville but we had a minor health scare which meant we needed to head to a doctor as soon as we could. The local doctor in Caloundra was booked out and advised us to go to hospital which was not how I envisioned ending our getaway. I was able to get a doctor’s appointment at home, so we decided to take the girls to The Big Pineapple for lunch on the way home.

Big Pineapple

What a disappointment that was. The Big Pineapple is still there and we took an obligatory picture. But it was nothing like its heyday from when my parents took me as a little girl. It was THE place for a parfait or ice cream sundae back then. There was the buffet restaurant downstairs and the nut ride and boat ride and a train. (The train is still there but it had already left to take passengers to the animal park down the hill.)

We walked around the abandoned main building and I described to the girls what used to be there. I remember the marketplace where you could buy all kinds of touristy things imaginable, and the opal shop where you could buy jewellery. It was never my style, but it was great for window shopping as a kid.

The building is empty and in need of being demolished or renovated.

I had hoped we could have lunch there before our drive home, but it was slim pickings for what was available. So we settled for Peter’s ice creams from the little kiosk out the front that sold a selection of souvenirs. There wasn’t even a public toilet available for tours. The lone staff toilet was the only toilet available for visitor’s use.

I do hope they redevelop the area. It’s almost like walking into a ghost town, beyond The Big Pineapple itself.

As we piled into the car to go home, we passed a lot of traffic coming towards the coast for the school holidays. It was good to have a weekend away and I was glad to have booked it last minute, but it felt good to get home too.

Have you ever booked a last minute getaway? Ever taken the kids out of school just because? What do you remember about The Big Pineapple?

Note: Thanks Bron from Mumlyfe for letting me steal your term to title my blog post. 😉
