A Spectacular Bathroom with a Rainforest View

Spectacular Bathroom with a Rainforest View

If you’re looking for a spectacular bathroom with a rainforest view, I’ve found it. This will be one of the most memorable getaways you can do with your partner.

I’m the first to admit feeling cautious using a bathroom with floor to ceiling windows.

But when the view is surrounded by rainforest and there is no possibility of another soul (other than your husband) seeing you in the nude, it’s a pretty spectacular experience.

Last weekend, for my Birthday and right after the chaos of a Brisbane lockdown, Jacob and I escaped across the border into Northern NSW.

The trip had been postponed for 15 months. It was meant to be our 15 year wedding anniversary celebration last year.

But like everyone’s plans last year, they had to change. It was memorable to have a romantic picnic in our living room due to lockdown.

I had tried to re-book again for our wedding anniversary earlier this year, but it was booked out months in advance.

And you can understand why when you see this property and its views!

Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat with Rainbow

A bathroom with a spectacular rainforest view

Of all the bathrooms I’ve installed and used in my 37 years of life, this one at Crystal Creek will stand as the most memorable one of all.

In fact the whole cabin and location is fabulous.

If you’re after a getaway which is remote, has little to no mobile reception or internet access, this is the place to escape to.

We stayed in the Luxury Mountain View Lodge, where the whole length of the bungalow is ceiling to floor windows.

A skylight above the bed offers views of the starlit sky at night and can be closed off to prevent early light in the morning.

Each Mountain View Lodge at Crystal Creek has been architecturally designed with an open plan area leading to a deck and your very own plunge pool. It was too wet and cold for us to use but I could imagine it would be well used in the warmer months after a hike.

The bathroom itself is spectacular with a walk in double shower, including a rain shower head which had amazing pressure. Plus a luxury double solid marble bath perfect for 2.

Sinking into a hot bath with surrounding rainforest views and a wine in hand was absolute bliss. Watching the sunset in the afternoon over the rainforest canopy was a fabulous way to end my Birthday.

About Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat

The drive into Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat (CCRR) was memorable in itself as you do have to drive over a few causeways to get into the property.

But the moment you drive into the long CCRR driveway with surrounding rainforest, you know you’ve found yourself somewhere special.

Driving into Crystal Creek

Nestled in the Tweed Valley, just south of the New South Wales/Queensland border, the retreat is surrounded on three sides by the world heritage-listed Numinbah Nature Reserve and Springbrook National Park.

Rainforest Views

Originally a Banana Plantation, the land was abandoned and then purchased in 1988. It took 4 years to plan, restore and build the retreat which opened in 1992.

There are various accommodation types, each with their own unique view. The retreat offers respite from the noise of modern life to complete calm in a rainforest sanctuary with waterfall sounds in the distance.

Things to do & where to eat

We stayed at Crystal Creek for 2 nights and we did not leave the property.

The lodgings alone are perfect to sit back and enjoy, sipping copious amounts of coffee or tea while reading a book. Sometimes I simply stared off into the distance watching the rain and clouds drift over the rainforest.

Rainforest walks

To get active, the rainforest begs to be explored.

rainforest walk at Crystal Creek

There are 4 main walking tracks to explore during your stay. We managed to do three of these walks. Believe the descriptions when they say they are moderate or strenuous. The Rainforest Walk and Lookout Hike were elevated hikes. A walking stick is a must.

Glow Worms

At night, there are torches available for a night hike to see glow worms in their natural habitat. It’s important to turn the torches off as the glow worms are light sensitive. The glow worms were amazing to see and another highlight of our trip.

Hammocks and Rockpools

Down at the creek, there are hammocks to lay on, which sway while you look up at the sky, through the rainforest canopy.

Swaying to the relaxing sounds of the waterfall was such a grounding experience. I didn’t want to leave.

The rockpools offer another swimming opportunity. It was refreshing to splash our face after a morning hike to the lookout.

Breakfast and Dinner

There are dining packages available, which we ordered before our stay. The food was delicious and sourced from local produce and suppliers.

I can’t wait to go back again.

Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat is the perfect escape for a reset away from work and reconnecting with your partner.

Are Overflow Holes in Bathroom Basins Necessary?

Are Overflow Holes in Bathroom Basins Necessary?

Are overflow holes in bathroom basins necessary? And if you’re renovating, is there a code dictating they must be installed in the bathroom? This post will explain all you need to know about basins with overflows.

If you’ve perused your local plumbing fixture supplier, you will notice bathroom basins can be ordered with or without overflow holes.

Confusion has arisen over what is the purpose of the overflow holes, and is it necessary for all of the vessel fixtures (basin, sink, bath) in your bathroom to have one.

This post will explain

  • The purpose of overflow holes and
  • Are overflow holes in bathroom basins necessary?

What is an overflow hole in a basin?

The overflow hole in a basin or bath is the opening near the top rim. The hole extends to a channel which runs on the underside of the basin (or bath) and connects to the waste. Choosing an overflow basin will mean you will also need a pop-up waste or plug and waste with an overflow.

The purpose of basin overflow holes

There are two functions for the overflow holes in your basin.

The first is to prevent water from overflowing the basin if the plug has been pushed in and the tap has been left to run. Water will slowly flow through the overflow hole, down the waste to prevent the water from spilling over top the basin edge. It’s an opening which can prevent a flood in the bathroom.

It is a preventative measure and there are no plumbing codes to regulate the need for installing a basin with an overflow hole. But this could change, so it’s best to check with your local licensed plumber at the time of installation.

The second function of the overflow hole is to help the basin drain faster. Air is allowed into the drain pipe through the overflow channel, allowing the water to drain more effectively down the basin.

basin with overflow

Why does my basin overflow hole smell?

All drain openings will smell from time to time due to the type of water flowing through them. An accumulation of soap products, toothpaste, body fluids and solids like hair can get caught in the overflow if the basin is filled to the brim for washing.

Like any drain, it needs to be cleaned regularly to keep it odour free. A flexible brush like a straw cleaner brush can be maneuvered to clean down the overflow channel.

A teaspoon of bi carb soda and half a cup of vinegar poured down a funnel can freshen the overflow hole too.

Bleach can also be used, however it is unpleasant and can’t be used on properties connected to septic systems.

Is it mandatory to choose a basin with an overflow?

It’s a matter of personal choice if you want a basin with or without an overflow. Some basins may not have the option of choice.

For some property owners and landlords, it’s seen as a necessity to prevent overflow accidents – especially if children are around.

Bathrooms in commercial buildings and public areas will usually have basins with an overflow to prevent water damage via flooding.

Concrete and stone basins won’t have overflows because of the way they are cast.

Regulations can change so while it’s not mandatory to have a basin with an overflow, check before selecting your fixtures. When in doubt, your bathroom designer and licensed plumber will ensure your bathroom meets both local and national codes.

Revamping Our Vuly Trampoline: Before and After Reveal

Vuly Trampoline revamped with spare parts

Revamping our Vuly Trampoline has ensured safety and removed the eyesore from our backyard. This before and after reveal will prove why Vuly Play should be your only choice for trampolines.

Gifted Product

In our house, we have a running list of items we need to update, fix or action. It’s an ongoing list when you own a property and a home maintenance checklist is certainly handy.

One of the items on our list to refresh was our Vuly Trampoline. The trampoline structure itself was fine, but the safety net and padding had seen better days. Not only was it an eyesore in our backyard, but there was the issue of safety when the kids jumped on it.

VULY Trampoline after storm damage and wear and tear

The gift that kept giving

Our Vuly Trampoline was a combined Christmas gift from the grandparents and great grandparents when Phoebe was 1 year old.

The trampoline has had 6 years of love from the kids and their family and friends. I’ve even enjoyed giving my pelvic floor a test on it! Ha!

young kids laying on Vuly Trampoline

But it’s also been prone to wear and tear from extreme QLD weather conditions. Our Vuly trampoline has survived a few hail storms, extreme rain events and intense heat in the summer.

Vuly Trampoline affected by hail storm

So when Vuly Play reached out to me to ask if I would like to review one of their products, I explained I didn’t need to. We were already Vuly Play trampoline converts. But I did need help in replacement parts to get our trampoline safe for the kids to play on again.

Vuly Trampolines are built to last

In our “throw away and buy new” society, it’s important to buy from a brand where replacement parts are easily available to prolong the use of the product.

This is where Vuly Trampolines stand out from their main competitors. While they are built to last heavy use and exposure to weather conditions, wear is unavoidable. So Vuly make it easy to have all the spare parts available for your particular model of trampoline.

When you buy a trampoline direct from Vuly Play, you are able to get half price parts for life.

If you buy your Vuly trampoline from a reseller, you don’t miss out. Simply register your trampoline online so you can also get half priced parts for life too.

My family bought our trampoline from a reseller. Unfortunately I didn’t register the trampoline online, but with the help of Vuly Play, we were able to ascertain what parts were needed and these were gifted as part of this blog post.

Before and after reveal of revamping our Vuly Trampoline

As you can see from the pictures, replacing the net and padding has made our Vuly Trampoline look new again!

Before and after reveal of Vuly Trampoline

We also replaced the mat, even though the old one worked fine.

Our Vuly trampoline is no longer an eyesore and the kids were eager to jump back on, knowing they were safe. I gave it a red hot go too.

Chunky Knit Throws as Winter Bed Runners

Chunky Knit Throws For Winter Bed Runners

Winter is the perfect time to swap the linens on the bed to suit the cooler change. The light summer throw is replaced with a chunky knit throw as a bed runner and the sheets are changed to flannelette.

A chunky knit throw can be quite expensive to purchase. T

They work well as a bed runner because there is less pilling of the knit.

Once you’ve found one that works with the colour theme in your bedroom, you will love taking it out each season for use.

chunky knit bed runner

Last year I bought a navy throw to use as a bed runner on our plain white bedspread. We’ve since changed our quilt cover to navy and mustard cushion accents.

For a moodier look, I intend to layer with more blues and greens. Or even contrast with purple. The bed is one of those areas  I like to change every so often. I’ve got all I need to  swap things around.

If you like to change things in your bedroom, a simple throw can make all the difference. I lay mine like a bed runner at the end of the bed, or in the middle.

Chunky knit throws are usually a winter must have for draping over the end of the sofa or as a foot layer on the end of the bed.

Etsy is a great place to head to for merino wool chunky knit throws. Most online stores will offer an acrylic polyester blend. Here are some fab options to consider for your home.

5 Ways to be Grateful for Your Home Just as it is

0
Modern Grey rendered home with tropical plants Grateful for home

Here are 5 ways to be grateful for your home just as it is. It’s tempting to want bigger and better but is that what you really need?

Our shelter is often one of the things we take for granted.

Having a home to raise a family in, a kitchen to prepare our meals in, a bed to fall asleep in and a laundry to wash our clothes in; these are just some of the benefits of living in a house no matter it’s age or style. A house, whether rented or bought, is something to be grateful for everyday.

However, house envy can get the better of us when we long for a home better than the one we live in.

It’s common to get this feeling when we’ve

  • Scrolled through professionally staged homes on Instagram and Pinterest
  • Walked through a display home
  • Been invited to a friend’s newly built home and it is so fresh and LOVELY
  • Watched TV remodeling shows prompting a reality comparison
  • Read magazines, online articles, blogs and ‘how to’ websites sharing styled interiors and not the lived in reality
  • Become overwhelmed by mess, clutter and house maintenance to keep our home up-to-date
  • Outgrown the existing property

House envy is an easy trap to fall into, and I’ve found myself sometimes falling into it easier than others when writing this blog.

But, there are ways to move beyond the envy by practicing gratitude and reminding ourselves of some simple home truths.

A few weeks ago, when my dad took me to get my MRI scan, I was admitted into the scan earlier than expected resulting in some unexpected free time.  After the scan, while discussing renovating and building, we decided to take a trip down memory lane and visit the houses we lived in.

Our first stop was my late grandparents’ home. The new owners had painted the exterior a light grey but had done little to the rest of the house.

We also drove past my childhood homes in Algester and Parkinson and finished at a display home.

This unexpected drive around the Southside of Brisbane inspired this post as it was interesting to see how the homes had aged, but also what the new owners had done to maintain the home.

These simple reminders were some of the points I concluded with when stepping through my own home after a busy week at work.

5 Ways to Be Grateful For Your Home Just as it is

5 ways to be grateful for your home just as it is

1. A professionally staged and styled home will always be different to a lived in home

Staged homes are styled in a way to attract buyers. It’s an advertising tool to present a house in the best light to get the highest bid.

They are also the homes which are used for imagery in online content.

Your home too can by styled professionally, but to live like this daily is a superfluous pressure you need to release. Unless you’re selling your home, don’t compare your home reality to a house no one has lived in yet. It’s a sure fire way to make you feel depressed about your home.

Home Staged Property - styling to sell

2. New homes will become old homes sooner or later

As dad and I drove past the homes we lived in and the suburban streets which were new housing developments 30 years ago, it was hard to imagine that these homes were once new.

New homes will become older homes sooner or later. Keeping up with maintenance and replacing materials as they deteriorate are all important practices to refresh the façade of the home.

If you’re feeling envious of the new homes propping up in your newsfeed, don’t allow feelings of negativity overwhelm you. Right now your house is doing exactly what it needs to do – provide shelter for you and your family. Anything above this is a bonus!

Making your home more current by replacing old with new are future projects you can plan and budget for.

3. Remember what attracted you to your home in the first place

What attracted you to the home you’re living in at present? Were you drawn to the naturally bright interior from all the windows, or the size of the backyard or open plan living? Its human nature to look beyond the good points and focus on improvements or lacks in a home.

living room update with maggie

Remembering what drew you to your home in the first place will give perspective and lead to gratefulness.

4. Count the living elements in your home

The walls, floor and roof can make a house, but family makes it a home. Being with those we love are more important than owning the latest furniture or home décor to make our home current.

If you live in a house where there is love and respect by all members in the home, you’re more blessed than you realise.

Jacob's 40th Family Photo

Not all houses have the same story and if walls could talk, the realities experienced from within some family homes are heartbreaking.

Look beyond the people in your home and consider your pets and even house plants which bring a bit of the outside in. Adding a bit of greenery to your home can freshen up your home instantly.

5. Remind yourself of what your house has allowed you to do in the past and present

Our houses will evolve with us as we expand, grow and change.

There are so many memories a house can allow us to make from family gatherings at Birthdays and Christmas to the personal changes when bringing home your firstborn child or introducing a puppy.

Dad celebrating 61st Birthday with grandchildren and puppy

Remembering how the roof we live under has provided a venue for a party or a safe haven for visitors are ways to be grateful for our homes, just as they are.

Minor updates, decluttering and even moving furniture around can improve our living areas immensely and may remove those feelings of underwhelm with our current home.

Have you ever had house envy? How have you become grateful for your home just as it is?

A Personal Life Update

0
a personal life update

It’s been a while since I’ve written personal posts on this blog and it’s been for good reason.

I’ve changed the content somewhat away from my life and more around trends and technical aspects of plumbing and renovation. There have been a few lifestyle posts in-between too.

But occasionally, when I share a selfie or personal post on my Facebook page, there is genuine interest in my life and so this post has been written to give a personal life update.

Eye Update

Eye Update

If you have been following my blog longer than 2 years, you will know I have a meningioma (benign tumour) behind my right eye.

I’ve been having it monitored and checked with 6 monthly MRIs, followed by eye tests with an ophthalmologist and then a final appointment with my neurosurgeon.

The last referrals were pushed out to 8 months and this led to my most recent visit to the neurosurgeon on Friday.

My recent MRI scans compared to 2019 show the meningioma has grown marginally, but it hasn’t affected my health or eyesight. In fact I got excellent results with perfect vision in both eyes from the tests.

So while the only symptom is a watering eye due to the protrusion of the eyeball (and this protrusion hasn’t changed since its discovery in 2019), we’ve made the decision to continue to monitor it.

For me this was a relief to hear. My next MRI will be in 12 months’ time, unless I start to get double vision or I notice something different with my eyesight.

I don’t really think about my eye until I look in the mirror and notice how puffy it is or how my concealer has smeared down my cheek.

It’s still an unknown on when and if I will get surgery, but for the moment, I’m happy with the current recommendation to watch it.

Operating could exacerbate the symptoms that could occur if it grows bigger. So while my eyesight is 100%, we’re not prepared to make it worse by operating.

Work Update

Tomorrow I start a new role at work as I will be working full time and backfilling as a team leader for two weeks.

be brave to suck at something new

I’m excited and nervous as I’m going to learn a lot but also it is a step up in responsibility.

I have been working towards getting into the leadership development pool at work so I can have backfilling opportunities to eventually secure a team leading role.

This may seem like a strange move when I’ve always wanted to get into home assessing.

But leading a team of assessors is a career I’d like to explore too so stepping into leadership in my current area at work will help with that future move.

It hasn’t been an easy move to take though.

My interview last September to get into the development pool didn’t go as well as I hoped.

I wasn’t accepted.

It shook my confidence a bit. I took time to reflect on the feedback and part of me didn’t want to try again.

But sometimes there is a reason why things don’t work out and I needed to really clarify what I wanted and where I wanted to go.

I organised mentoring sessions and set up my development plan to show exactly where I wanted to go at work. I had my second interview a week and a half go, which I had thought I had blown again because of nerves.

But clearly I was being too hard on myself as I was accepted and my first backfill starts tomorrow.

This past week has been busy juggling content deadlines and social media scheduling for existing work clients so there is no disruption.

But I will say I’m ready for a change with some of the current work I do.

I know I need to let go of some things to embrace the new. It’s too early to let go yet until I secure a secondment.

The random hours I’ve worked around the kids over the last 10 years is something I’ve wanted to coagulate into one full time position. I still want to continue the blog, but more as a side hustle.

As someone who has often disliked change, I’ve started to embrace it more. It’s not always the change that makes me fearful. It’s the unknown effects of the change.

In this moment of time though, while the world is still impacted by the pandemic and we’ve had immediate family members affected by health issues, it’s a reminder that now is all we have.

While my eye isn’t giving me grief, my kids are happy and healthy and I have the capacity to explore opportunities, I’m going to give it a red hot shot.

One day the mountain will behind you

6 Plumbing Checks When Buying a New Home

0
Plumbing Checks when buying a new home

Here are 6 plumbing checks when buying a new home. The status of each check will prepare you for plumbing costs to rectify, or they may deter you from buying the home altogether.

Buying a new property can be exciting and stressful.

Once you’ve found the perfect property and the price has been accepted, there are so many things to do before you can move in.

The building and termite inspections are usually the first assessments done before the sale becomes unconditional.

But are there any other inspections you should consider?

What is the state of the plumbing?

A pre-purchase building inspection will only give limited details about the state of the plumbing in and around the home. A termite inspection may give details on moisture in various sections of the home.

Unfortunately, not all pre-purchase building and termite inspections are equal.

Sometimes, it’s not until you’ve moved into your new home that the plumbing issues will start to arise, and by then it will be your problem to fix.

To prevent the inconvenience of unexpected expense, there are some key plumbing areas in and around the home you can check yourself. This post offers visual triggers to identify the possibility of illegal plumbing.

Here are 6 plumbing checks you can do yourself when buying a home

Water Leaks

Water leaks can be caused from leaking taps, frayed flexi hoses, water pipe connections or waste pipes.

burst flexible hose

Visually inspect and touch around the taps, under the basin and in the vanity cupboard.

Check the bathroom walls for any buckling or bulging. Mould and mildew can be a sign of a hidden leak in the walls.

Some leaks can be inexpensive to repair like a leaking tap or frayed flexi hose. But if the vanity cupboard is damp and warped, this could be a sign of a bigger problem to rectify.

Water Hammer

Water hammer is the sound pipes make when water has to change direction or stop suddenly when a tap is turned on. The best way to test if your new house has water hammer is to turn on the taps and listen for the noise.

If you do hear the loud knocking sound, it’s best to get a plumber to investigate a solution for you.

There are various reasons for water hammer – from pipes not secured correctly through stud walls to taps needing replacement jumper valves.

Water hammer is annoying, and if left unfixed, can cause further damage to pipework and other fixtures and appliances connected to the water line.

Slow drainage and gurgling noises

Fill the basin with water and watch how quickly drains away. Are there gurgling noises when the water flows down?

check for water hammer and gurgling when buying a new house

This could be a sign of a blockage. The blockage may be to the fixture itself, or it could be further down the main sewer line affecting all fixtures to the house.

It is common for sewer lines to have cracks and an invasion of tree roots causing a blockage. The only way to check if this is a possibility is to get a CCTV drain camera down the line to investigate the cause of the gurgling sound.

Hot Water Unit

A visual inspection of the hot water unit will give you an idea on the likelihood of it’s need for a replacement.

Most hot water units are installed outside. Check the serial plate of the hot water unit and make a note of the manufacture date. If you can’t find a manufacture date, find the model number. This can give an idea of the age of the water unit.

hot water inspected before pandemic hits home

Hot water units will typically last between 10-15 years.

Check all the connections are leak free. Also look for visible rust outside or beneath the tank. This can shorten the lifespan of your hot water unit.

Rusty gutters and downpipes

Outdoor plumbing is just as important as the indoor plumbing. Look up at the gutters and downpipes. Can you see any holes or rust?

Rusty gutters are a sign they need to be replaced sooner rather than later. Any holes or deterioration can be a sign of potential outdoor flooding which will need to be mitigated to prevent water overflowing through the eaves and under the roofline of the house.

Tall Trees and grass patches

Don’t be fooled by green patches and flourishing trees in the garden. If the trees are along the main sewer line into the property, there is a potential the roots are penetrating the sewer line.

Grass patches and damp spots could also mean an under ground leak.wet patch in front yard

The only way to know for sure is to book a CCTV drain camera inspection down the sewer line and thermal imaging may be used to identify a water leak underground.

It can be disheartening to discover undetected plumbing issues in your new home after you’ve moved in. However, these plumbing checks may prompt a plumbing inspection for further investigation.

What plumbing checks would you suggest when purchasing a new home?

Our Scenic Rim Half Day Trip: Boonah Surrounds and Kooroomba Lavender

0
scenic rim half day trip

This Scenic Rim Half Day trip from Brisbane to Boonah surrounds is an easy 60 minute drive, with amazing views and a relaxed ambience.

Do you ever get to the weekend and have an urge to discover somewhere new? But then you don’t go because it requires planning and sometimes booking in advance?

Well yesterday, I needed a change in scenery. So at 9am, after a sleep in and coffee in bed, I made up a relaxed itinerary for a half day out to the Scenic Rim.

Driving into Boonah

I know that a day out with kids always requires some physical activity, food and experience. Even a little shopping – which I personally think is a must when supporting local businesses.

My online wandering landed on this page by the Scenic Rim about Boonah surrounds, with a list of must visits.

As most of the morning had gone, I chose a few options to visit and at 11am we headed away.

Scenic Rim Half Day Trip

Boonah is around a 60 minute drive from Brisbane. We chose to drive via Beaudesert Road and there were roadworks, but it didn’t delay our road trip too much.

Our first stop was to head to Mount French at Boonah to do the North Cliff Track, but instead, we found Arthur Clive’s Bakery and Café, which was on our list to buy food for a picnic.

Arthur Clive's Bakery Boonah

The girls needed a toilet stop, so we opted to eat at the café instead. The steak sandwich was one of the best Jacob had had so the food didn’t disappoint. Also there were toilets which made it an ideal pit stop.

Food at Arthur Clive's Bakery Boonah

It wasn’t too far from Arthur Clive’s Bakery that we made our way to Mount French Road to the walking track.

I thought it was strange how quiet the drive was. A car had stopped in the middle of the road on the hill, which we had thought was odd.

Mount French Closed for Back Burning

But it made sense when we reached the end of the road and found the track was closed due to planned burning.  The other car had most likely made the same discovery and stopped to make the most of the scenery driving down the hill. We did the same.

looking out at Boonah view

We pulled to the side of the road to take in the landscape and breathe in the fresh country air. The trip wasn’t a complete letdown but the track is one we will try to do next time.

country view via Mount French Road

From there we headed to Kooromba Vineyard and Lavender Farm and this stop didn’t disappoint.

Kooroomba vineyard and lavender farm view

When heading to Kooroomba, always check the Facebook page to see if it is closed to the public for weddings.

Thankfully I had checked this before we went. I wasn’t able to book a table for lunch as they do book out well in advance but there is a terrace area with a limited menu.

The scenery is spectacular and the weather made it all the more special. We arrived at around 2pm, which seemed like a good time to arrive as it wasn’t as busy – probably because people had come and gone for lunch.

Kooroomba Lavender Chapel

There are plenty of photo opportunities in the vineyard, and you can understand why it is chosen as a wedding venue.

Kooroomba Lavender Farm

Jacob and I at Kooroomba Lavender Farm

A helicopter was preparing to fly when we headed over to the swing for a family photo, which was fun for the girls to watch.

Family photo opportunity at Kooroomba Lavender

The swing was a great way to sit and take in the view. The younger two kids found a mini playground to explore while Jacob, Esther and I stared at the view.

Bec at Kooromba Lavender

After walking through the rows of lavender, we headed back to the terrace for a drink. On Sunday afternoons they have live music, making it a splendid way to finish the afternoon.

Rose Kooroomba wine

You could definitely fill a lazy weekend out here if you needed a local escape. I definitely want to head back in Spring to see the difference in the landscape.

5 Front Loader Washing Machine Myths

5 front loader washing machine myths

Are you tossing between a front loader or top loader washing machine? Here are 5 Front Loader Washing Machine Myths which may make your decision easier.

Sponsored by The Good Guys

The front loader washing machine has been thrown some shade since their entrance to the clothes washing scene.

There are plenty of myths floating around about front loader washing machines. I was even told a few years ago when we needed to replace our broken down top loader. It was encouraged to purchase another top loader.

The reasons were

  • Top loader washing machines could fit more clothes
  • It was easier on the back when filling the machine
  • A full drum of water meant our clothes would be cleaned better
  • I could lift the lid mid-cycle to add a missed piece of clothing

But front loader washing machines have come a long way and many of the myths you’ve heard are no longer valid with updated technology in front load washers.

Here are some of the myths debunked!

5 Front Loader Washing Machine Myths

1. Top loaders produce the best wash outcome on clothes

Less water in the drum of a front loader must mean the clothes won’t be washed as well, but this is a myth. Front loader washing machines will offer a variety of cycles to suit the material and grubbiness of the clothes. Hygienic steam cleans are a common offering in front loader washing machines, where the cycle will remove 99.9% of bacteria and allergens from clothes.

2. Front loader washing machines can only handle small loads

Many front loader washing machines can wash larger loads with models being able to handle 7kg-9kg loads. This load will typically suit a family of 3-5 people. Many popular top loader washing machines hover around the 8kg to 10kg capacity.

LG 10Kg Front Loader Washer

3. Wash cycles are too long on front loader washing machines

Most front loaders now offer a quick 15 minute cycle for those last minute washes. The cycle offerings can also be tailored to the load.

4. You can’t pause a front loader mid-cycle to add another item

This was the case for older front loader washing machines, but updated technology means some front loaders allow you to add items mid-cycle. The and allows you to pause the wash, open the door and throw in that missed sock and continue on with its cycle.

5. Much noisier than top loaders

Providing the front loader is installed correctly, it can create less noise than a top loader due to insulation and anti-vibration technology.

Bosch 8kg Front Load Washer

There are many variables to consider when you choose a new washing machine for your family. If you use a top loader (like we do!) it’s understandable to be hesitant embracing a front loader.

The cost, physical size and washing capacity are the key factors in choosing the right washing machine for your family. Energy consumption and water efficiency will also be important if you use your washing machine daily. The Good Guys have a fantastic to help with your decision.

No matter what you choose, don’t disregard a front loader washing machine. The higher specifications in front loader models mean some of the myths you’ve heard are no longer valid today. Check out The Good Guys for your next purchase. You’ll Pay Less, Every Day at The Good Guys.

homemade mothers day gift ideas

These easy handmade Mother’s Day gift ideas are practical with no sewing required.

This Mother’s Day will be my 10th celebration since having my first child 11 years ago.

Over the years, Mother’s Day gifts have varied from handmade to store bought with the memorable school Mother’s Day store surprises thrown in. Some of these are now living their best life in my children’s bedroom (hello Unicorn Plush Pillow) or Vinnies (a cat door stop… and we’ve never owned a cat!).

If you ask any mum what she wants for Mother’s Day, the answers will vary. A sleep in, snuggles in bed, hot coffee or simply a meal shared with loved ones are the gifts money can’t buy.

The next best gifts are the thoughtful homemade gifts. I’ve made a few of these with my girls over the years as we are blessed with 4 grandmas, with one being a great grandma.

Handmade doesn’t need to be gaudy and ick. Most of these handmade gift ideas are useful or can offer mum an indulgent experience in the bathroom.

Gas Bottles Upcycled into Bowls and Planters

Gas Bottles Upcycled

Are you looking for a unique homeware piece for your home? Check out Li’l Gas Bowl, a small business which specializes in gas bottles upcycled into bowls and planters.

On the weekend I went to the Finders Keepers Markets in Brisbane at the Old Museum. It was my first time at the markets and one store caught my eye: Li’l Gas Bowl.

Lil Gas Bowl at Finders Keepers Markets

There were shelves of colourful bowls and planters made from old gas bottles.

upcycled gas cylinders turned into bowls

Kerrie Burgess started the business 8 years ago and she sells her Li’l Gas bowls at markets around Australia.

I was intrigued by the upcycled products, which come in a range of colour finishes.

Each bowl is made from ‘discarded, rusted, scratched and dented gas bottles’ which would  have normally gone to landfill, but are instead ‘reincarnated as funky industrial planters and bowls sitting pride-of-place in beautiful interiors and gardens.’

examples of gas bowls in homes

Kerrie has recently created a matte black finish and I bought this bowl to put in my kitchen as a fruit bowl.

It takes approximately 8 weeks for each bowl to be created and due to small batches being made at a time, you can be guaranteed to receive a one-of-a-kind piece.

The bowls can be used in the kitchen, as planters, ice buckets for drinks and even water bowls for your furry friends.

The prices can range from $79 – $159 depending on the size of the bowl.

If you’re after a unique gift idea, while supporting an Australian artist based in Melbourne, why not purchase a planter or bowl from Li’l Gas Bowls?

Why White Basins Work Best in Bathrooms

why white basins work best in bathrooms

Over the last few years, there has been a growing desire to install coloured basins made from concrete or stone. White basins have been the norm in many bathrooms for good reasons. Reasons I will explain below.

An editor from Houzz recently commented that white basins would be replaced by stone or concrete basins in predicted bathroom trends back in 2018. Since then it has been featured in many bathroom renovations including The Block.

It’s a trend which won’t wane as it can be a focal feature in the bathroom, injecting some much needed colour. But I think white basins work best in bathrooms. In fact I think white basins trump all other basin styles and colours, and here are some reasons why.

Why White Basins Work Best in The Bathroom

why white basins work best in the bathroom

1. Versatile with Coloured Tapware

White basins are versatile with any coloured tapware. Whether you choose, gold, brass, copper, rose gold,  stainless, black or even white taps, a white basin can pull off whatever coloured tapware you choose. Some stones and even black basins, can’t carry off coloured tapware as well as a white basin can.

2. Easy to clean

A white ceramic basin is easy to clean. There aren’t too many cleaners that will damage the outer surface. Unlike concrete and stone where care must be taken.

3. They require little maintenance

For stone or marble basins, these can crack and require maintenance and in some instances, complete replacement depending on the depth of the fracture.

Cement basins will require resealing as part of a maintenance routine. White ceramic or porcelain basins only require a clean once a week (or more if needed), making it a great basin for those who are busy and don’t have time to faff about.

4. Camouflages waste and mess

Think about the colours of the products you use and the colour of bathroom scum. Foamed toothpaste = white, foamed soap = white – generally speaking. A white basin can somewhat camouflage these substances.

If left on a concrete or dark stone basin, not so. Residue and soap scum can give your coloured basin a weathered look if not cleaned after use.

5. Readily available

White basins are generally readily available and come in a range of styles to suit the design of your bathroom and your personal style. Concrete usually has to be made to order and stone basins only come in a small range of styles (and colours) and may be limited in supply. Although demand has changed this of late.

6. White basins are budget friendly

All other basin styles are usually more expensive and often require more thought when mounting and installing them. For example, concrete basins are HEAVY and require appropriate brackets and support.

7. Easy to match with other white fixtures

For uniformity, the basins will match with other fixtures in the bathroom like the toilet and bath.

The cons about white basins, are they can develop a brown ring near the plug and waste. Katrina Chambers shares how you can get rid of this ring though. It’s more prevalent in square basins or where the slope in the basin has a shallow incline, which makes the water pool around the waste.

White basins aren’t prone as much to scratches or breaks – they can happen, but are rare and can usually be buffed out with a cream cleanser.

Always choose a reputable brand of basin. Purchasing your basin from Reece or Tradelink (in Australia) will ensure your purchase details are kept on file and warranty issues can be sorted if needed.

If you’re looking for ways to keep your bathroom budget down, white basins are the way to go.

What kind of basins do you have in your bathroom? Have you ever thought why white basins are the most popular choice in the bathroom?

Is It Time to Replace Your Nasty Toilet Brush?

0
replace nasty toilet brush

Is it time to replace your nasty toilet brush in your home? Check out these new styles to update this most worked utensil in the bathroom.

One of my pet hates when going into commercial or public toilets is seeing the skanky, brown bristles of the toilet brush. It barely sits in the holder with its brown bristles on display for all to see.

The state of many toilet brushes in homes are like an overused toothbrush that has bristles going any which way. There could even be bits in the bristles no one needs to see.

While it may be a hard-working utensil in your home, it doesn’t have to look well used and past it’s use by date. Hide the evidence of a well used toilet brush, people.

kmart toilet brush holder
Our main toilet with a Kmart toilet brush and holder.

Which toilet brush is best?

I’ve owned a few toilet brushes in my time. I’ve purchased an expensive toilet brush from a plumbing supplier to the cheap and modern from Kmart.

I tend to go for somewhere in between because I don’t want to constantly replace the toilet brush and it’s better for the environment if you buy right once and clean it regularly.

I’m a fan of the toilet brushes with a high lid. The brush is contained, can be easily cleaned and is easier to place back in the holder, unlike the balancing ones.

These types of toilet brush holders do accumulate with water so regular cleaning of the brush is required. I add a few drops of essential oil to the cannister to keep it clean.

Toilet brushes can come in a variety of different styles. There are ones where the brush bristles are black and they sit in an open vessel (would not put these in bleach to clean).

Choose what will work with your bathroom décor and will scrub the toilet bowl best.

Metal or bamboo toilet brush holders are the best with kids. If it falls over, it won’t break like the ceramic ones do.

I’ve found some stylish toilet brushes online that will do the job and still look good after scrubbing away.

25 Housewarming Gifts People Will Love

A housewarming gift is a lovely way to greet new neighbours or celebrate when a friend moves into a new home. The first home purchase is certainly a reason to celebrate and a housewarming gift is the perfect way to end the moving experience for those involved.

The last year has seen a change in neighbours with new house purchases or moving for lifestyle after COVID19 made us reevaluate where we wanted to live during potential future lockdowns.

A few years ago, our school community of mums recently said farewell to a much loved friend who relocated to the north side of Brisbane. We purchased a new house plant, a picture frame to place a photo of us from one of our get-togethers. We also headed out to dinner for one last hurrah at our local favourite Vietnamese restaurant.

25 housewarming gift ideas

Whether the move is big or small, a housewarming gift can be a welcome end to the whole packing and moving process which can be exhausting.

If you’re invited to a housewarming party or even a visit to check out the new property, here are some housewarming gift ideas to consider from budget to luxe. They are gifts that will be well appreciated and won’t add to the clutter of items yet to find a place in a new home.

10 Ways to Add Bathroom Storage Without Having to Renovate

0
bathroom storage, 10 ways without having to renovate

An important aspect to any bathroom is its storage capacity. Bathroom storage is a necessity.

But what do you do when you can’t afford to renovate, and there is limited storage in your bathroom?

Here are 10 ways to add bathroom storage without changing the layout of your bathroom.  These ideas will help keep your bathroom tidy and organised.

10 ways to add bathroom storage without having to renovate

1. Add bathroom storage with a trolley

Trolleys are great for offering extra shelf space for hair appliances, towels and toiletries. To make it look less cluttered, dedicate each shelf for a particular item and dress the top with a plant or vase of flowers.

2. Lean a ladder on the wall

A ladder with wide planks can offer extra storage for bottles and jars as needed. A ladder can also be used to hang or store towels in the bathroom.

3. Hang cascading baskets

Hang some cascading baskets to hold toilet rolls and personal effects.

4. Add a display cabinet

You may have a vanity, but what’s to say you can’t add another vanity unit in the bathroom for extra storage?

5. Place baskets under the vanity

Place individual baskets under open vanities to store extra towels and toilet rolls.

6. Add floating shelves

7. Use a wide bath caddy

A bath caddy is often used for display purposes, but this shelf across the bath can be used to hold toiletries and personal items.

8. Add a bedside table

A bedside table may be small enough to add a little extra stowage in a tight space.

9. Add a buffet or console cabinet

If the space warrants it, why not add a window-cased buffet? This can be a great way to store items and put them on display.

10. Add a Locker

A locker is often thin enough to fit in a small space between fixtures. This type of storage unit would suit an industrial style bathroom – or it will at least add an industrial vibe to your bathroom.

Meringue Bunny Tail Cookies for Easter

Need cheering up this Easter? These cute Meringue Bunny Tail Cookies will lift your spirits.

Meringue Bunny Tail Cookies - An Easy Easter Biscuit Recipe

I think I typed too soon to think this week would be unlike last year’s week before Easter.

The lockdown in Brisbane has meant the girls started Easter holidays earlier. So no Easter  Hat Parade again for Phoebe.

I officially start holidays from tomorrow and so I was keeping a lot of Easter craft to do with the kids on Thursday.

But my Phoebe wanted to do some Easter baking. I had all the ingredients to make some special cookies, until I realised I didn’t. Someone had eaten all the chocolate buds for paw print cookies. No one knows who though.

I had no other lollies, other than marshmallows, to decorate our Easter cookies.

So I went through the pantry and came up with an alternative – we’d make Meringue Bunny Tail Cookies! The mini meringues were spare from the Pavlova Grazing Platters I made over Christmas.

This recipe is the same biscuit base I shared on Be a Fun Mum. But instead of using chocolate freckles, I iced the biscuits and added mini meringues for the tails.

Meringue Bunny Tail Cookies

They came up pretty well and thought I’d share the recipe here if you need to do some emotional Easter baking… because it’s not looking too good in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Easter cookies

You can also make other shaped cookies from the dough. We also cut out Easter eggs and Christmas trees – to ice orange and green for carrots. But alas, I had no yellow food dye to make the orange icing.

Easter Home Decorating 2021

Easter Home Decorating

I would usually get our Easter Home Decorating done earlier than a week before Easter, but it’s been a slightly hectic couple of weeks. And it feels like Easter has snuck up quickly this year.

Decorating the table and console for Easter

Easter is a special time in our family. We get together, have our annual tradition of an Easter egg hunt and the girls get excited by what is left in their baskets on Easter Sunday.

Easter table vignette

We may even be able to attend church this Easter! As I get older, and become somewhat cynical about many things, I’m grateful for the cross. I’m humbled by mercy and thankful that Jesus still died for a cynic like me.

This year, I have Easter off and I’m looking forward to spending time with Jacob and the girls. We’re hoping no lockdowns occur with the recent developments in Brisbane so we can enjoy the holidays. I’m wishing it for all families who are looking forward to the much needed break.

It’s crazy to think this time last year, we had to isolate at home and change the way we worked. I’m grateful we’ve been able to resume a similar life pre-COVID19. But there is a slight hesitancy to head to crowded areas if someone mingles when they shouldn’t.

But I digress, this post is about our Easter Home Decorating. Here are some images from around our living area.

Decorating a console for Easter

Gold bunny on coffee table

Truth be told, I’ve been creating Easter content for other websites, but procrastinated with decorating our home.

We got the chance yesterday to bring out the bunnies and eggs. I also received a delivery  to add to our coffee table; a gold resin shelf bunny from White Moose. For every sale, a tree is planted through Trees of the Future.

More Easter craft will be done this week and Phoebe has her first Easter Hat Parade, which was cancelled last year. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a previous year’s hat and a hot glue gun!

Don’t Go Near Flooded Stormwater Drains

0
flooded stormwater drain

Don’t go near flooded stormwater drains. It’s a warning to protect lives as a larger volume of water is stronger than you think.

The Queensland Government ad “If it’s flooded, forget it” is a warning to all drivers to back it up when faced with flooded roads.

And yet, on the weekend, there were still cars driving through flooded roads.

This post was one of the first posts I wrote when I started my blog and warnings are just as valid then as they are today.

Allowing kids to play in storm water drains or flooded creeks is like letting them swim outside the flags on a beach. It’s dangerous.

What can be seen as fun water play idea can end in tragedy. Flood waters can hold a strong current and no matter how strong a swimmer you are, the force can have terrible consequences.

The reason to avoid flooded stormwater drains

Stormwater drains are designed as a conduit to remove large volumes of water away to prevent flooding. When they overflow, a current can form which is strong enough to act like a vacuum.  Its force is so strong it has the ability to suck large items – even a human being through its orifice.

Drowning can be preventable in this situation. But it’s an awful recovery that could have been avoided.

Growing up, my parents were always very strict on where my brother and I were allowed to play when we were younger. It was constantly drummed into our ears not to play near stormwater drains. Every parent needs to be vigilant in giving their kids – especially their teenagers this warning.

Plumbers know first hand how forceful water is when unblocking a drain. My dad can relay a job where he was called to unblock a sewer chamber (a main where waste pipes connect into the main council sewer pipe network) using piping rods and once he unblocked it, the suction from the chamber sucked the sewer rods out of his hands.

If a plumber can feel the force of being sucked down, how more so a child?

Playing near stormwater drains can end in tragedy. Stay away from them altogether and take heed to authorities when they issue warnings of staying inside and away from flood waters.

What warnings do you issue to your children that your parents issued to you?

Rainbow Bathroom Ideas From Around the World

Rainbow bathroom ideas

These Rainbow Bathroom ideas from around the world show how colours can be embraced in the bathroom.

It’s a known fact if you want your bathroom to age well, it’s best to choose a neutral colour scheme. Some colours can be polarizing if the house is ever put for sale. Accessories can be changed but tiles and coloured fixtures cannot (well not easily!).

But if you’re building or renovating your forever home, these limitations can be abandoned. Instead of choosing one colour, why not include all the colours of the rainbow in your bathroom?

Of course, these rainbow bathrooms are not for everyone, but they certainly grabbed my attention. They show how using all the colours of the rainbow in a bathroom design can be pulled off.

Tips for a Rainbow Bathroom

  • Choose one feature of the bathroom which will be rainbow – it could be the tiles or cabinetry or even mouldings like the powder room below.
  • Once you’ve decided on your chosen Rainbow feature, keep all other items of the bathroom neutral like white fixtures and chrome tapware. Let the rainbow be the focal point.
  • Consider if it’s a design you can live with till the next renovation.
  • Also, will a rainbow bathroom work with the rest of the interior of the home? If it’s bright and eclectic, there would be no problem. If you have more of a neutral colour palette around the home, the bathroom will look out of place.

Find Your Second Runabout Family Car with Ken Mills Toyota

0
Ken Mills Toyota Red Yaris Cross runabout family car

One family car is doable for many years when the kids are young. But fast forward to when the kids attend different schools, have after school activities and mum and dad are at work, a second runabout family car will be a lifesaver. Ken Mills Toyota offers a range of choice for small to mid-sized models to suit your needs.

Sponsored Post for Ken Mills Toyota

When I was an apprentice, I had a little runabout car; a red Toyota Yaris.

It was a zippy car to drive and the fact it was red… well that’s my favourite colour so I loved my Toyota Yaris.

I found the Yaris easy to squeeze into street parking in the city and when all the seats were down, it could fit two toilet pans and their cisterns, two basins and boxes of tapware and accessories.

I have fond memories of that Toyota Yaris, but then we traded it in for a Toyota Hilux Ute.

It was a more practical choice for our plumbing business when picking up and delivering gear to worksites.  For my driving ability though, it wasn’t as easy as the Yaris to maneuver into side street loading zones.  I also nearly rolled it when turning a corner too fast – in the rain – with no load in the back. I count that experience as a lucky escape.

Fast forward 15 years later, Toyota is still a much loved brand of car for our family. Our Kluger was a problem solver when trying to fit 3 cars seats in the back when our kids were under 4. The 7 seater now offers us extra room with the kids in primary school. They can be easily spaced during trips and the boot space is awesome when we head away on holidays.

We’ve managed with a single car for all our family life, but it’s become evident a second car will be needed for drop offs and pick ups to after school activities and ease for getting to work.

It doesn’t need to be as big as our Kluger. Size and affordability are my main concerns with purchasing a new car.

The brand new Toyota Yaris Cross GX is on my list to test drive. It’s the size I need and it’s now packed with more features my original Yaris didn’t have.

Red Toyota Yaris Cross Ken Mills Toyota

The Yaris comes in a variety of different versions where you can get the Sport, Hybrid and Cross.

The Yaris Cross is the largest out of the Yaris cars, but not as big as the Corolla. It’s also fitted with a full suite of safety tech which Toyota is well known for. I love how there is an emergency button which can be pressed if I find myself in a dangerous situation and it will send out a distress signal.

Ken Mills Toyota has many options for the second runabout car most families find they need when their kids start high school. It’s an even more ideal car to teach learner’s in as they start their driving experience on the road.

But heck, I’m getting ahead of myself! We need to settle on the right car first.

Why Ken Mills Toyota?

The last year has prompted the importance of supporting local with our purchasing decisions. When you buy a car from a dealership like Ken Mills Toyota, you can expect personalised customer service while staff find the right car for your situation.

A local trip up north may enable you to find that second runabout car your family needs, while making a road trip out of the experience.

If you are in the position of researching a second runabout car for your family, use a trusted dealer like Ken Mills Toyota to assist with your final choice. You can’t go wrong with Toyota.

0

Most tapware within Australia is generally manufactured and imported from overseas. Like many Australian made products, tapware that is made on our shores, can often cost more to manufacture due to overhead costs.

I wrote this post 3 years ago and was made aware that some of the brands I had listed as Australian made may only be partially manufactured here but assembled in Australia.

In light of this information, I’ve updated this post and have also shared some thoughts about buying Australian made tapware.

Buying tapware in Australia

There has been a growing desire to buy Australian made products to support the local economy after a year of turmoil caused by COVID-19. Supporting Australian made has a flow on effect with job stability which helps the economy.

However, it may not be feasible for a brand to manufacture in Australia due to costs and the quality some overseas manufacturers are able to provide.

Keep in mind, if you’re buying a product IN Australia, you are supporting local jobs and the economy.

Any tapware that is sold within Australia needs to abide by strict watermarking and WELS standards. If the tapware can’t meet these, they should not be sold or installed.

With that said, manufacturing and assembly can change from time to time. To be sure you’re purchasing an Australian made tap, contact the brand directly and make your choice from there.

If you are looking for something bespoke or tailor made for your bathroom or kitchen, then these brands will be able to assist as they may be able to manufacture it for you. Just contact them directly.

Disclosure: These brands state their tapware is designed, engineered and manufactured in Australia. To be confident with your purchase, check with the brand directly. Most can be purchased through Reece or Tradelink. Some may only be ordered through specialist bathroom supply stores.
