Rainbow Homewares to Brighten Your Home

rainbow homewares to brighten your home

Rainbow homewares are certainly a cheery way to add a bit of colour and quirk to your interiors.

With many of us spending more time in our homes, sometimes a new pop of colour can make a dramatic change, for little effort and cost.

I’m quite partial to the rainbow. It conjures hope and we certainly need that right now.

You may have noticed the trend of rainbows embraced in patterns, shapes and adorned as textured tufts on cushions.

If you thought rainbow homewares would be all the colours in one item, they won’t be necessarily.

Some of the items below will have muted tones or a grouping of contrasting colours for a subtle effect.

We’ve embraced rainbows in the girls bedrooms. I haven’t added any rainbow décor yet,  but never say never. I could see one of those rainbow bath mats making their way into the kids bathroom.

Which Basin Waste is Best? Pop Up Waste Vs. Pop Down Waste Vs. Plug and Waste

0
how to choose the right basin waste for you basin

Choosing the right basin waste for your basin will come down to five considerations.

how to choose the right basin waste for your basin

1. The size of the basin waste outlet

Basin wastes will be either 32mm or 40mm in diameter. Check the basin specifications to know which size waste you need.

2. Presence of an overflow

Basins can come with or without an overflow.

black pop up waste with an overflow and without an overflow
Left: Without overflow, Right: With an overflow, Pop Up Wastes by Meir Australia

An overflow is the hole near the top inner rim of the basin which prevents water running over the basin edge, flooding the bathroom. The overflow hole allows for water to ‘overflow’ down the basin waste.

If your basin has an overflow, you will need a basin waste with an overflow slot and if your basin doesn’t have an overflow, choose a basin waste without the slot.

3. The finish

The waste will typically match the tapware finish in your bathroom.

This is not always possible for various tapware finishes though.

The most common waste finishes available are chrome, black, white, brass and gold.

Mixing finishes in the bathroom can certainly be done. It will come down to personal preferences and what is available when ordering the fittings.

4. The design of the waste

There are three types of basin wastes to consider. The pop up waste, pop down waste and the traditional plug and waste. All three have their own pros and cons. I will discuss these below.

The pop up and pop down wastes are more common for their stylish and seamless aesthetic in the basin.

5. Future function and maintenance

It’s important to consider how easy the waste is to clean and what are the future complications after constant use? What is their lifespan?

As explained in point 4, there are 3 types of basin wastes to consider.  Let’s explore the pros and cons of each type.

Pop Up Waste

The pop up waste is the most popular choice in basin wastes.

It can come in a variety of finishes to match with your chosen tapware. The pop up mechanism allows for ease of draining and plugging down to seal the water in the basin when needed.

The cons are they do require regular cleaning and they do have a limited life span. Pop up wastes are notorious for getting stuck when the plug insert is pushed down. This can be frustrating and often requires a whole new waste replacement.

They can also be accidentally pushed down if hands are brushed past or if the mixer spout shoots water directly at the waste to activate the pop-down.

It is common for homeowners to replace their pop up waste with a standard plug and waste because of the inconvenience caused by pop up wastes.

Pop Down Waste

The pop down waste is the newer waste on the block. Its unified design creates a distinct appeal for those wanting a seamless plug and waste. It also solves some of the negative aspects of a pop up waste.

pop down basin waste
Champagne Pop Down Basin Waste available at Meir Australia

How a pop down waste works: When in the sealed position, the pop down waste will sit recessed. When open, it sits flush as the water drains.

There is no accidental sealing due to the flush design of the plug. But do ensure the tap spout isn’t directly overhead as high pressure can still push the inner plug down to seal.

Pop down wastes are also easier to clean as the whole inner cartridge can be removed. This allows for ease of removing blockages and replacement should it no longer seal.

They are the most expensive basin waste type but they are stunning.

Like the pop up waste, the mechanism will have a limited lifespan. Look for manufacturers who offer longer warranty on their wastes to ensure you get value for money.

Plug and Waste

The traditional plug and waste is still a go-to for many renovators and new builds for its ease in installation, availability and removes the fear of a stuck plug.

The grate of the waste does make it difficult to clean and the plug is separate so needs to be stored somewhere it won’t be lost.

Still, it is the basin waste option most resort to when they’ve had issues with the pop up or pop down wastes.

They are also the cheapest option. If your budget is limited, opt for a standard plug and waste. You can always upgrade to a new modern style waste later on.

10 Common Causes for Blocked Drains and How to Fix Them

Home Maintenance: May and June 2020

0
home maintenance may and june painting hallway navy and pink

In my effort to remain consistent with these posts, life and work has got in the way of maintaining the momentum with our home maintenance.

As I’ve reflected through my pictures though, we still got a lot done and have been ticking off boxes on our checklist.

If you’re new to these posts, each month I write a round-up of home maintenance projects we got up to in the month.

It’s been a slow progress, but the reality is, home maintenance is just that. It’s doing little bits at a time to maintain the home and keep it fresh and running.

Budget and time are also factors so we haven’t put pressure on ourselves to get all the things done at once.

Home Maintenance May

In May, we painted both bathrooms, sorted out towel rails for everyone’s towels and painted our entry and hallway.

The hardest part in all this process was choosing paint colours!

testing paint colours in a hallway

I had an image in my head of what I wanted our hallway to look like and then the testers threw my confidence out the window.

In the end, we painted over our feature wall with Taubmans Admiralty (navy) and painted the recess of the hallway in Taubmans Muted Fuchscia. Both colours were picked up by our Hayley Wills painting.

Hallway with navy and pink walls and Hayley Wills painting

The same navy was painted as a feature wall in the main bathroom. It was in a need of a refresh from the purple it was originally painted 15 years ago.

Not the best photo as taken inside the shower.

We installed towel rails for all members of the family and that system has been working well for us – especially during winter when towels can take a while to dry.

June Improvements

In June, I gave the toilet bowls a deep clean to remove scale, which I believe has built up from using natural cleaning products. I never used to have it when I bought store bought products. I’m still doing research on this to find another solution.

Scalex to remove brown stains from toilet bowl

We got the carpets professionally cleaned after a traumatic spewing episode from one of my daughters. It took Jacob and I a few hours past midnight to clean the disaster zones. After our epic cleaning efforts, I couldn’t delay a professional carpet clean any longer.

When booking trades, be sure to let them know of any sickness, especially during these COVID times. Thankfully it was just an upset tummy for our little one and we booked the clean a week after the event.

My dad offered to replace the downpipes and paint the exterior of our house in June while Jacob and I have been working full time.

The first project was to replace the downpipes, pressure-wash the exterior walls of our home and fill in the gaps.

graffiti on exterior walls of house

After cleaning our house with the pressure-washer, it revealed old graffiti on the walls which must have occurred when it was a display home.  We had graffiti all around the house. This discovery got our act together to choose an exterior wall colour we were happy with.

choosing an exterior wall paint

This decision was also agonizing as none of the ones I chose were similar to our original house.

In the end we went with Dulux. If it’s too dark and not enough contrast to the two front columns of our house, we can change the colour of the columns! But I think it will be ok.

Another update, which wasn’t on my home maintenance checklist but still worth a mention, was we updated the girls quilt covers. The girls love their mini bedroom makeover and the end of financial year sales made it an affordable update.

Hopefully next month I will be able to share the before and after photos of our house after being painted.

7 Tips for Living in Your Home While Renovating (With Kids!)

Living in Your Home While Renovating

Living in your home while renovating is best described as challenging but doable!

If you’re about to start a home renovation, you may have wondered whether to move out and rent a property or live in your home while renovating.

Jen Bishop from Interiors Addict shares her 7 tips on how to successfully live through the chaos and still keep your sanity. Just!

7 Tips for Living in Your Home While Renovating

1. Plan to renovate during warmer weather

If you can, do it when the weather’s warmer. There’s a few reasons for this.

With trades in and out all day long, if it’s winter, it can get really chilly and you’ll feel your power bill rise while you see that warmth quite literally disappear out of the door! Not to mention muddy tradie boots when it’s raining.

Plus, if you’re changing windows and doors, you may find yourself with a tarp over the hole left behind, as we did for a while as we waited for our new bathroom window to be made, and let’s just say, that isn’t optimum insulation! Brrrrr!!!! And it’s a lot easier to live off BBQs and salads, if you’re having your kitchen ripped out in summer!

2. Keep kids out of the way

If you have kids, keep them out of the way.

If you choose to live through your reno, your little ones’ safety is really your responsibility. Good trades will do their best to keep things safe, but keeping kids away from the construction areas is a matter of health and safety.

And while I find my boys come over all “Bob the Builder” whenever they see someone in the house with tools, and it might be cute when they try and “help”, time is money, so don’t slow your trades down!

If your kids are too young to know they need to keep out of the way, baby safety gates are a great way to block off parts of your house (just make sure the builders know how to open them!).

3. Lower your expectations around keeping a clean and tidy house!

I’m a total neat freak so living through a reno is challenging for me!

But there are some things you just can’t get around and one of them is dust. It gets everywhere, however hard your trades try to minimise that. So if you’re having your bathroom renovated and that includes jack hammering up old floor tiles, I’d advise you to remove precious clothes and belongings from any nearby bedrooms, rather than hope for the best.

Your trades should be covering your floors and taping up doors where possible to keep things cleaner.

You can try to clean and tidy at the end of every night but you’ll really be wasting your time. Perhaps save that effort for once a week on a Friday evening so you can enjoy a relatively clean house at the weekends!

Personally, I kept our fortnightly cleaner, even though she couldn’t get everywhere and the foreman said I was crazy and wasting my money! I also found keeping one room (the living room) clean and tidy at all times kept me sane, while the rest of the house descended into dust and mess!

4. Give trades their own entrance and exit

If trades can have their own entrance and exit, this will make life a lot easier.

In our case, they came in and out through the back door off our guest bedroom and I removed as much stuff as possible from that room so they could use it to store things inside.

Make your trades’ lives easier and it will pay off! This also keeps mess to a minimum.

5. Be a nice and thoughtful customer

If it’s hot, make sure trades know where the air con remote is, offer water, coffee and use of your microwave.

Make them feel comfortable to sit at your outdoor furniture and take their break.

Let them know if there’s somewhere they can safely leave their tools overnight rather than have to pack up each time. If you’re okay with them playing music, tell them so.

I’m sure all trades would prefer to work in empty houses where they don’t have to worry about being noisy or in your way, or worse still, watched! So try and make them feel welcome.

6. Set up or rent a temporary kitchen

Whether you live in a house or apartment, if you’re in the Sydney metro area, you can rent a mini KitchenPod which you plug into a regular power point and cold water tap.

kitchenpod living in your home while renovating a kitchen to use

I wish I’d known about this genius invention when we did our kitchen!

But what I found really helpful was setting up a bit of a makeshift kitchen in the dining room with a microwave, kettle, toaster and plastic plates.

Think about all those ‘fad’ small appliances that often end up forgotten at the back of a cupboard, like a slow cooker, air fryer and sandwich press.

They can come into their own when you don’t have access to your full kitchen! I’d wash up at the end of each day in the laundry sink. And of course, the BBQ and the odd takeout will become your best friends!

7. Don’t chat too much!

I’m a chatty person by nature and I always love chatting about my plans for the house but as I’ve already mentioned, time is money.

Of course mention something if you’re not happy, and ask questions, but let the experts get on with their job in peace!

At the same time, be available and approachable if your trades have questions for you. Make sure everyone has your mobile number.

Our Hotel Date Night at the Beach

0
hotel date night to surfers paradise

A date night should be a regular part of married life. But if I’m honest, it falls by the wayside when kids, work and life responsibilities collide together.

I don’t know about you, but date night opportunities can be rare. When I do organize one, I’m indecisive on where to go and what to do – often resorting to staying home and getting takeout.

My favourite experience is dining at a restaurant. But it’s different now with social restrictions.

If you’ve dined at a restaurant recently, you may have noticed the new normal. These are just some of what I’ve experienced in the last two weeks as restrictions have eased in QLD.

  • You have to book a table in advance aka you need to know where you’re going or it may be a Macca’s drive thru
  • Hand sanitizer is available at every entry point
  • There is a marked entry and exit point
  • Tables and chairs are taped off to meet the 1.5m social distancing rule and to meet maximum patrons
  • If you’re unable to book a table, you have to line up and wait at least half an hour until a table is free
  • When you finally get a table, you are advised there is a 1 hour dining window

Not all of this is bad. And in no way am I complaining especially when parts of Melbourne are in lockdown, most of the world is still recovering and third world countries are experiencing extreme poverty.

But I think it’s ok to acknowledge life isn’t the same as it used to be.

We’ve been actively supporting our local takeaway restaurants since restrictions hit in March. But I have missed the thrill of dressing up and going out for dinner. Even if it was a rarity before the virus hit.

So when restrictions eased and the winter school holidays finally arrived, my parents offered to have our girls over. We had two nights free of kid responsibilities.

But if I’m honest with you, all Jacob and I needed was rest.

We both work in essential services and even though we don’t work in health, we’ve been at the forefront of supporting customers immediately impacted by the financial and lifestyle impacts of COVID-19.

We needed a change of scenery and a chance to breathe and recoup.

change of scenery

Our Thursday night dining experience at Garden City was every point I mentioned above. It was strange to see shops closed on a night where they would be open late.

It was another reminder of the new normal.

For our second kid-free night we booked a last minute hotel stay at the QT on the Gold Coast for Friday night.

QT Gold Coast Date Night

The buffet restaurant was closed due to the virus and safety, but room service was still available and that proved to be ideal for our hotel date night away.

No need to wait for a table or be told you had an hour to eat.

I booked our hotel getaway on Friday morning. A bit of research online landed me onto a page called Hot Wire.

This site offers last minute rates and even surprise hotel rates if you’d like to book a mystery hotel escape. I’m not sure who owns the site, but I went direct with the hotel instead.

They couldn’t match the price but they got close and added some inclusions. I always prefer to book direct with a hotel.

Beach view from QT Gold Coast

We packed the 24 hours in with shopping at Harbour Town (again a strange experience), a walk along the beach, browsing and buying food delights at the night markets and enjoying an espresso martini at the Stingray bar.

walk along the beach

night markets at Surfers Paradise

Bec at Stingray Bar with espresso martini

Jacob and I reminisced the last time we had been at the hotel was when Phoebe was 6 weeks old. We had come down for Problogger Conference. This again reminded me of another impact to local tourism with the loss of conferences and hotel rooms booked out.

Although I do know some have been booked out for quarantine.

After a drink and inhaling a large bowl of sweet potato fries (which were supposed to be a snack before dinner) we settled back into our room for dinner, but instead opted for a movie. Pop-tops and fresh popcorn was delivered as part of the movie package experience.

Breakfast was also delivered the next morning to our room. The highlight was not preparing breakfast and eating with a view.

breakfast in a hotel

We managed time for another walk along the beach before we headed home.

Travelling local is going to be the new normal for many of us, which I think is necessary to support tourism in our own country.

While some things will feel and look different, the best thing we can do is spend with local businesses.

Our 24 hour hotel date night getaway was just what we needed.

date night at the beach

I hope you can do something similar soon.

If you feel strange with the new normal when dining out, book a hotel. I know the hotel and the workers will appreciate your support.

Thanks to the QT Gold Coast for a lovely night away. The service was friendly, view was amazing and I loved the complimentary sparkling wine on arrival to our room.

For some this would have been indulgent, but for us, it was money well spent.

5 High Maintenance Bathroom Trends

0
High Maintenance Bathroom Trends

These high maintenance bathroom trends can look instagram worthy, but when it’s time for use in the real world, they can lose their appeal.

Inspiration for bathroom design is often sought from online – whether from Pinterest, Houzz, Instagram or even Bathroom Galleries.

But there are some designs which are best left as someone else’s problem to deal with.

Sometimes an amazing bathroom feature can lack in functionality and require extra maintenance.

Before you fall into the trap of investing in one of these high maintenance bathroom trends, read the following pain points.

The temporary pain may be worth it for the look. Or you may change your mind to save your future sanity.

5 high maintenance bathroom trends

1. Freestanding Claw Bath

A freestanding claw bath is the ultimate focal point in the bathroom. But it also can be a magnet for dust bunnies and hair nests.

Think about what is revealed beneath the sofa when it’s moved.

The same can be said for a freestanding claw bath. The void under the bath can be a hidden tunnel of human shedding.

The high edges of this bath can also make it difficult to get in and out. A lack of a ledge can make it hard to store bathing products.

Another pain point is keeping the water inside the bath if you decide to combine with a shower. The use of a shower curtain is not always effective or appealing.

2. Wall Hung Vanity

A wall hung vanity can make a bathroom look bigger than it is. It elongates the floor surface area.

However the void underneath the vanity, just like the claw bath, is notorious for dust accumulation.

Wall hung vanities are also typically smaller and offer less storage. It can be a game of tetris fitting a family’s toiletry products in the vanity.

3. Vessel Basins and Shallow Above Counter Basins

Vessel basins will always require extra cleaning underneath the bowl. Again, it’s another space where makeup powder and water seem to accumulate.

Splash back is more common in vessel basins and shallow above counter basins because the short distance between the tap spout and basin often causes water to splash onto the mirror.

Vessel basins can also make it difficult for little ones to wash their hands or brush their teeth. Be prepared to use a stool and wipe down the area after the kids have used the bathroom.

4. Pop-up Waste

The pop-up waste is trendy in design and it’s popular in basins. You can purchase different colours to match with your tapware.

But these pop-up wastes are notorious for getting stuck or blocked up with hair and toothpaste.

chrome pop up waste in white vessel basin

Be prepared to regularly clean these wastes to avoid them getting stuck, or commit to having money put away to replace when they do get stuck and can’t be fixed.

Tip: If your pop-up waste won’t pop up, unscrew the basin waste trap and use a screw driver to pop-up the waste.

5. Black Tiles

Black tiles can look super chic but they will require regular cleaning.

Any type of black fixture or surface will show water marks and soap scum easily. The only time it will ever look Instagram worthy is after they’ve been cleaned.

If you must have black tiles on the floor, opt for at tile with a white vein so it will camouflage water and soap marks.

Which high maintenance bathroom trends have you discovered from experience?

Three Australian Made Soap Brands I Love

0
australian made soaps I love

If you’re after an Australian made soap which smells delicious and is great for your skin, I’m going to share with you my three favourite brands.

I used to be a loafer and shower gel kinda gal until I considered the landfill cost of my body washing habit.

And while there are natural alternatives and initiatives to recycle beauty bottles, I think starting a new habit is better than trying to fix an old one.

I can’t remember when I started using bars of soap, but it’s certainly been a while because I have my preferred favourites. I even give the soaps as gifts because they smell amazing and they are a cost effective gift idea.

One day I may make my own soap, but for now, I will happily support these businesses who are doing the hard work for me.

Washpool Skin Wellness

Ever since our weekend away to Stanthorpe, Washpool Soaperie has been a firm favourite to order soaps from.

Jacob loves the Shower, Shave and Shampoo bars because they do three jobs in one bar of soap.

My favourite bars are the Geranium and Patchouli Coco-Nut bars and Rose Geranium Palmarosa bar, but I’ve tried the activated charcoal for blemished skin, which really helped.

The soaps range in price from $6.50 per bar but you can buy boxes which can make buying handmade soap more cost effective.

Freshwater Farms

When I haven’t put a soap order in, I grab a bar of the Freshwater Farms Rosewater + Pink Clay soap from Woolworths.

Freshwater farm soaps australia made

The smell is DIVINE. Even my girls use this soap.

There are a few different soaps to choose from. I love the smell of the Lemon Myrtle and Manuka Honey soap, perfect for dry skin which is common during winter.

Lemon Myrtle and Manuka Honey Soap

Soapy Butter Co

Soapy Butter Co was a discovery during lockdown. I bought a few items here for Mother’s Day and to simply treat myself and the girls.

I loved their Rose Shower Steamers and I’m currently using their Raspberry Lip Balm.

But the Goats Milk and Chamomile soap was awesome for my skin. The scent was faint, but my skin felt smooth after use.

Where to Buy Budget Friendly Kids’ Bed Linen

0
Where to buy budget friendly kids' bed linen

If you’re after budget friendly kids’ bed linen, I’m sharing my picks from online stores.

We recently updated the girls quilt covers because frequent use and constant washing had faded the prints. The quilt covers also had rips from wear and tear where the quilt insert would go.

Updating bed linen is a costly exercise. I’m reluctant to spend big dollars on kids’ linen because their tastes change and I have three kids to buy linen for. I want their beds to look unique and comfy, but I don’t want to be spending a fortune.

So whether you’re moving your toddler to a big bed or needing to update your children’s bedrooms, these budget friendly kids’ bed linen stores will help you out.

Where to Buy Budget Friendly Kids’ Bed Linen

Spotlight

I found Spotlight had the best range of kids quilt covers to choose from. They also had a great range of matching sheet sets and cushions. Spotlight came up with the goods for my recent haul.

Kmart

Kmart always has a great selection of kids bedding at affordable prices, but you need to get in quick for the double sizes if your child has a king single bed. Recently, there wasn’t a lot of choice, but it’s definitely worth checking out.

Target

I used to go to Target for all my kids’ bed linen – especially their sheet sets. It can be a bit hit and miss but sometimes you can walk in at the right time and get what you’re looking for.

Kas Kids

Kas Kids always has fun and bright kids bed linen for a variety of ages and tastes. They also have matching cushions and toys to create a layered and cohesive look.

Adairs

Adairs is on the pricier end of the budget scale for kids linen, but it’s certainly a contender because the sales can make the linen more affordable. I find Adairs is great for all ages, including the tween and teen.

Adairs Boys Bed Linen
Adairs Bodhi Quilted Indigo Quilt from $97.99

Hiccups

Hiccups kids linen is part of Linen House and offers a range of themed quilt sets. These are perfect kids who love a specific theme.

Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk had limited children’s bed linen in stock, but it’s always a favourite store to peruse.

I find they’re best for the basics like quilts and pillows. All our quilts have come from Pillow Talk for their range of quilt filling choice and price.

Kip and Co

Kip and Co is not always budget friendly, but their linen lasts.

I find the linen from Kip and Co is best suited to tweens and teens. Be sure to check out the sales as you may be able to score a bargain.

I generally invest in pillow cases from higher end bed linen brands to mix and layer with budget friendly pieces.

Should The Laundry Match The Bathroom Or Kitchen?

0
Should The Laundry Match The Bathroom Or Kitchen

Should the laundry match the bathroom or kitchen? Or should all three spaces have their own independent look?

The rules of design are often constructed to create cohesion in a property.

But it can be confusing to know which materials should be used where and which rooms should match or not.

It’s often a question which pops up during a new build or whole home renovation.

So what is the answer? Should the laundry match the bathroom or the kitchen?

The answer comes down to what you want. It’s a matter of personal choice.

Not helpful?

Well here are some points to consider to help navigate your decision.

Where is the laundry located in comparison to the kitchen and bathroom?

Location is important when deciding whether to match your laundry to the bathroom or kitchen.

Often the bathrooms and kitchen will have different materials, but the same theme. They may have one common feature – same splashback tile or same benchtops or cabinetry.

If the laundry is located next to the kitchen, it’s going to make sense to use common materials to create cohesion when moving between rooms.

laundry and kitchen design together

On the other hand, if laundry is attached to a mudroom or powder room, it may make more sense to match to the bathrooms.

Consider the common dominant feature to repeat

To lessen the decision making process, it may be wise to have similar materials or tile placement throughout the three spaces.

Black basins in bathroom

But if you’ve gone all out in the kitchen with a black sink, it may be overkill in a laundry. If  you have the budget, then go for it. If the budget is tight, opt for matte black tapware instead.

laundry matching bathroom

Consider the overall house theme

There are no hard and fast rules about the laundry matching other rooms in the home. But do consider the overall design theme. If you’ve gone modern coastal, choose similar materials to replicate the theme in the laundry.

Overthinking it can put unnecessary pressure and stress to the decision making process.

When in doubt, chat with an interior architect. They will put your mind at ease and advise points you may not have considered.

How will you use the laundry?

People don’t want to spend time in their laundry. If it’s stylish and functional, you’ve achieved the perfect balance for the room.

I’d much rather spend my time in a kitchen or bathroom and so I’d invest in in those rooms before a laundry.

What do you think? Should the laundry match the bathroom or kitchen? How did you make your decision on what did or didn’t match?

4 Things You Shouldn’t DIY in Your Bathroom Renovation

0
4 Things You Shouldn’t DIY in Your Bathroom Renovation

There are a lot of tasks you shouldn’t DIY in your bathroom renovation. I’m going to share the most common questions I’ve been asked and the correct action to take.

When a bathroom renovation is on the agenda, it’s quite tempting to do all the things yourself to save some money. However, some parts of the renovation should be left to the professionals as they can be costly to fix if not done right the first time.

4 Things You Shouldn’t DIY in Your Bathroom Renovation

It’s important to engage with licensed and specialised trades for these 4 installations.

4 Things You Shouldn’t DIY in Your Bathroom Renovation

Disconnecting waste and water from fixtures during demolition

If you’re preparing your bathroom for a renovation, disconnecting the waste and water from the existing fixtures may be a harmless thing to do.

But this should be done by a plumber.

A plumber will isolate the services before disconnecting. A common step sometimes forgotten by the homeowner.

You won’t be covered by home insurance if you forget to isolate the water from the fixture you’re removing.

It can also be difficult to remove waste connections (toilets) and not cause damage to the outlet that may be needed for a reconnection.

Often, the builder will demolish the bathroom and remove the fixtures.

However, one builder did this and forgot to isolate the water.

When they disconnected the basin mixer, water not only flooded the bathroom, but caused significant damage to other areas of the house which weren’t in the scope of works.

When it came time to claim on their insurance for the damages, it wasn’t paid out because the builder engaged in works they were not licensed to do.

Action: Organise a plumber to disconnect the fixtures for you. You can isolate the water to your property so the site is ready for the plumber to disconnect and cap the services.

Organise an electrician to isolate power too. Once the services are isolated, you can work with your builder to remove tiles, walls and debris from the site.

Connecting fixtures to different plumbing waste points

To save money on a renovation, it’s recommended to keep plumbing in the same position. This can be cost and time-effective because the plumbing is already in place.

If you choose to create a different layout, please involve your plumber to know what can and can’t be connected to which waste.

The wastes to various fixtures vary in diameter. A licensed plumber will ensure the correct wastes are connected to the right fixtures.

Action: When connecting fixtures to existing plumbing wastes, replace with the same fixture. Only a licensed plumber should be installing your fixtures.

DIY Waterproofing

There are waterproofing products available from hardware stores which profess to waterproof your bathroom for a fraction of the cost and time.

If it sounds cheap, it probably is, and you don’t want to be cutting corners when waterproofing a bathroom.

Moisture in the bathroom can cause significant structural damage, attract termites and it can cause health issues with mould growth.

Waterproofing should not be done by an unlicensed Waterproofer.

Action: Get your builder to organise the waterproofing in your bathroom and ensure you get the waterproofing certification.

Redirecting water lines

Redirecting water lines to reconfigure the bathroom layout must be done by a licensed plumber.

It’s an easy mistake to cross connect water lines and damage a shower combination.

It’s a costly mistake to run water lines to a shower, have the walls sheeted, waterproofed and tiled to find the water was connected to the wrong side – or no water connected at all.

Actions: All water lines must be installed by a plumber. They should also be tested by a plumber before walls are sheeted. It can be a costly exercise to demolish your new bathroom because the water wasn’t connected correctly.

Can you suggest other tasks you shouldn’t DIY in your bathroom renovation?

How To Remove Brown Stains From The Toilet Bowl

how to remove brown stains from toilet bowl

Whenever I’ve been asked how to remove brown stains from the toilet bowl, I’ve always suggested natural cleaners like baking soda and vinegar.

A few years ago I even reviewed a cleaning product which did clean my toilet bowls.

Back then the toilet bowls weren’t being used as often by kids.

With age and more frequent use, my cleaning routine has had to increase.

However, over the last month, I’ve noticed my regular cleaning efforts haven’t been able to remove the brown stains lining the inner bottom edge of our toilet bowl.

The brown stains were in both our toilet bowls, and they were stubborn. No amount of cleaning or scrubbing would remove them.

Before

So I went on the hunt for a cleaning hack. I came across this article by Better Homes and Gardens sharing a hack to use Bunnings cleaner Scalex, to remove the brown stains.

Scalex to remove brown stains from toilet bowl

I got Jacob to buy a bottle from our local Bunnings to give it a go.

Now it is labelled poison, so use gloves when handling the product.

After dropping the kids to school, I tested Scalex on their toilet and sprinkled a tablespoon into the bowl to soak. It is suggested to let it soak during the night but our kids use the toilet at night.

Before school pickup, I used the toilet brush to scrub and I was amazed that whatever those brown stains were had dissolved in the water. I have two new white toilet bowls again.

After – Brown lines are gone

So if you do have stubborn brown stains at the bottom of the toilet, do try Scalex. It’s worth a try before you replace the toilet.

Tip: Please use with care and read safety instructions on the bottle. Store away from children.

Have you got another tip on removing brown stains from the toilet bowl that have worked for you? I’d love to hear it!

Top Loader Washing Machine Laundry Ideas

If you’re after top loader washing machine laundry ideas, this post is for you.

Whenever I’ve come across a post sharing about laundries, they always have front loader washing machines. There seems to be little inspiration for design when including a top loader washing machine.

The reasons can vary. The main one is front loader washing machines are more popular. They have smart technology, water efficiency and are compact in design. It’s quite easy to fit a front loader washing machine and dryer in a small laundry and still have space for storage.

But if you’ve got a top loader washer which is still in working order and fits in with your lifestyle needs, there is no need to miss out on having a stylish laundry. These top loader washing machine laundry ideas can give you inspiration.

Top Loader Washing Machine Laundry Design Tips

These tips will ensure your laundry is functional when using a top loader washing machine.

  • Keep the space above the top loader washing machine clear. If you do need to add shelving or cabinetry across, measure enough space to ensure the washing machine lid can stand upright without jarring against any obstructions.
  • Pair the laundry sink and washing machine together to make it easier for the plumbing to be concealed. Hoses can be concealed by placing the water taps in adjacent cabinetry or behind the washing machine. Check your washing machine manual to see if it offers guidelines on the configuration and position of the hoses.
  • Allow for an empty space for future appliance upgrades. You may one day decide to get a front loader washing machine so it will look odd if the void in the cabinetry has been made to suit a top loader. If you opt for an empty space rather than a void in the cabinetry, it allows for appliances to be stacked to keep a streamlined look in the laundry.

What type of washing machine do you have? A top loader or front loader?

Ways to Support Local Businesses During Restrictions

0
support local businesses during restrictions

If there was ever a time to support local businesses, now would be it. And I have no doubt many of us have been doing what we can by ordering takeaway from our local restaurants or buying from online Australian stores.

But the difficulty many face with supporting local is having the income to do so and for a lot of families, it’s a really tight request to ask.

The impacts of COVID-19 have rippled across so many industries which has resulted in less income. And less income means having little margin to spend elsewhere.

But it doesn’t have to cost a lot to support local. Often it’s a change in thinking that can result in benefits for everyone.

I wanted to share some practical ways we have supported local businesses or have had local businesses bless us because someone in our family has bought local.

ways to support local businesses during restrictions

While some businesses have had to ‘pivot’ during this time, I think consumer behavior also needs to pivot to support local businesses. It doesn’t mean buying out every weekend (but hey if you have the budget to do so, go ahead!) It means intentionally spending money you do have with businesses who appreciate the sale.

Order takeaway dessert

Takeaway can make a major dent to the family budget. It’s easy to spend ¼ of your family weekly grocery budget – sometimes more – on a dinner from a local takeaway.

So why not do a takeaway dessert instead?

We made up this dessert platter from ordering the dessert menu from Oporto. It came to around $30. It resulted in a date night in the lounge room, and dessert was devoured on while watching Netflix.

Buy picnic supplies at your destination

In QLD, restrictions have eased somewhat where a local drive and picnic in the park is possible. Public BBQs can’t be used though so you may have to rethink a cook up.

have a picnic

What we’ve done instead is pack bottles of water, plates and cutlery and bought our food at our destination.

At Mt Tambourine we bought from the local bakery and we did the same at Samford Village by purchasing savoury and sweet delights to eat on our picnic.

Samford Patisserie Food Support Local Businesses

Packing a picnic can certainly save money. But purchasing food at our destination not only saved time with preparation, it allowed us to enjoy food local to the area. It’s an easy was to support a local business while at your destination.

Let the kids spend their pocket money at a local shop

The only time I’ve headed to the shops has been to purchase groceries or new clothes to fit growing bodies.

On the weekend when we headed to Samford and Cedar Creek, we stopped into the The House of Requirement – a shop dedicated to Harry Potter. The girls got to choose one item and spend their pocket money.

House of Requirement shop Samford Village

Our kids weren’t saving for anything special so this was a treat to actually be in a shop. Why not buy upcoming Birthday gifts when perusing local shops?

Support local pop up stalls

Some food stalls have had to think on their feet with ways to bring in an income when all festivals and large crowd events have been cancelled.

If you see a local food stall or solo market store while driving for work or doing essential errands, why not stop and support?

Share about the location on your social media to make others aware of the store too.

It’s been a treat having the Dagwood Dog stall up the road from us.

Book a Tradie and outsource your property headaches

Is there a job you’ve been meaning to call an electrician to fix or a plumber to check?   Whatever has been on your ‘must do’ list, outsource it to a tradie.

a salmon plumbing truck

Now is the ideal time to book in a service or inspection for any appliances in your home. These maintenance checks can prevent bigger problems down the track. Some jobs to consider booking are

• Termite inspection
• Get carpets professionally cleaned
Hot water unit inspection
• Heater serviced
• Air con serviced in time for summer
• Upgrade smoke alarms and detectors in property

These bookings can cost a couple of hundred dollars (sometimes more depending on what else needs to be fixed!). Spacing out the jobs throughout the year can make it affordable.

These are just some of the ways we’ve supported local. Our spending has decreased due to being at home in isolation, so we have been able to spend locally where we can.

Where to Source a Coloured Basin

0
where to source a coloured basin

A coloured basin certainly makes a statement in the bathroom.

It’s a trend we will see more of as bathrooms evolve to include more colour.

White basins are a safe choice and they come in a range of shapes, sizes and depths. You can’t go wrong with a white basin and it’s uniformity with other white fixtures makes it a reliable choice.

However, a unique basin colour can stand out in a neutral bathroom. They also can suit a range of metallic finishes with your chosen tapware and plug and waste.

Coloured basins can be ceramic, stone or concrete. Your stone varieties will be natural in colour.

Ceramic coloured basins will be limited in choice of colour (usually black, grey, pink, blue and green).

Concrete basins can offer a range of different colours to suit your desired basin.

Coloured basins will be above counter installation or wall hung. If you want an inset or semi-recessed basin, a white basin will be your only choice – for now.

Coloured Basin Stockists

Key points to consider when choosing a coloured basin

  • Think about the cleaning aspect as a white basin can be more forgiving with cleaning.
  • Most coloured basins are made in Australia so you will be supporting and Aussie business.
  • Most coloured basins won’t have an overflow.
  • For above counter basins, ensure the vanity is the right height.
  • Concrete is heavy, so ensure your vanity of choice will be able to hold the extra weight.

Do you love the look of coloured basins? Or is white your go to always?

If Pee And Poo Go Down The Toilet, Where Does Vomit Go?

0
If Pee And Poo Go Down The Toilet, Where Should Vomit Go?

We all know only the three P’s should go down the toilet – pee, poo and paper (toilet paper), but where does vomit go?

where should vomit go

This question was asked to me by Janet from Front Page Web Writing, as it was a question contemplated during a family discussion. Hopefully it wasn’t around the dinner table! I thought I’d share my answer with you.

While it may seem like common sense, if you’re ever pondered why we do some of the things we do, there are reasons for it.

Vomiting in the toilet may seem disgusting due to what the toilet flushes away and having one’s face in close proximity to the bowl.

So why would one ‘kneel at the porcelain altar’ instead of throwing up in a bath or basin? And is it ok if you vomit in the shower or at the kitchen sink?

You can vomit down fixtures attached to your sewer.

These fixtures are the shower, bath, basin and sink.

But you need to make sure they are well cleaned afterwards. Also a fair amount of water and disinfectant will need to be flushed down the waste to ensure the vomit doesn’t sit in the s trap.

The smell of vomit will permeate the air if it sits in the trap.

Reasons why the toilet is the best fixture for vomiting in

  • The toilet bowl is easier to clean once the vomit is flushed away.
  • Often the reflex action of vomiting causes the body to bend over making the toilet better positioned to catch your sick, so to speak.
  • You can minimize air born particles by flushing the waste away with the lid down – this is important when dealing with gastro.
  • Solid body waste can travel easier through a 100mm pipe opening which connects a toilet, than a bath or basin drain which is 40mm in diameter.
  • The sink, basin, shower and bath are used for washing up or cleaning. Even though the waste water will end up in the sewer, anything that has bacteria to cause illness is best disposed of in a fixture that doesn’t come into contact with the hands and face.
  • You want to avoid vomit sitting in your floor waste in the bathroom as the shower, bath and basin will connect to this. If not enough water flushes the vomit away, it can sit in the floor waste trap making your bathroom smell and allowing other family members to breathe it in.

Tips for managing sick kids

Often it’s not easy to get kids to the toilet when they are sick. Or if you’re pregnant, a projectile vomit can happen unexpectedly due to morning sickness. The nearest fixture would be better to be sick in than on the carpet, bed or sofa.

If you do get vomit on the carpet, bed or sofa, mop it up as best you can with paper towel and then sprinkle with bi carb soda. Organise a professional clean once everyone is better.

I always keep old ice cream containers for the kids when they’re sick and they are always disposed of after their bout of sickness. The contents is always poured down the toilet and flushed away with the toilet seat lid down.

Ideally, being sick in the toilet requires less cleaning and contact between family members.

So there is the answer to the question and some reasons on why the toilet is the best fixture to vomit in.

Maybe it should be known as the FOUR P’s that go down the toilet: Pee, Poo, Paper and Puke.

Upcycle Your Shower Bath Base Into A Pond

0
Upcycle Your Shower Bath Base Into A Pond

When you demo a bathroom for a renovation, it can result in a lot of debris, which is usually dumped.

Some fixtures can’t be saved because they’ve had to be smashed or they’ve been damaged while they were disconnected.

But if you are able to save your old shower bath base (or even a bath base), why not repurpose it into a pond water feature for the garden?

upcycle bath shower base into a pond

I was impressed when I saw how this shower bath base was upcycled into a pond.

I didn’t realise this base was part of a bathroom demo to allow dad and I to renovate the bathroom, 8 years ago.

old shower bath base

Tip: If you are renovating, think about how you can reuse the fixtures that have been disconnected. Alternatively, you could make some cash by selling it on gumtree for others looking to upcycle.

It took a day’s work to turn this old shower bath base into a beautiful water feature outside artist, Deb Mostert’s studio.

digging hole for pond water feature

The plug hole was siliconed in and the tray was lined to ensure no leaks. Rocks and a sleeper were placed around the pond base to blend it into the garden and provide platforms for frogs and lizards.

upcycle a shower bath base into a pond

I can only imagine the tranquil sounds it brings to the studio and the plentiful inspiration for Deb’s art.

Deb painted our late Bentley a few years ago so we could always have a reminder of him in our living area. My parents commissioned the artwork and I received it for my Birthday. It’s one of my favourite wall art pieces in our home.

dog artwork corner deb mostert

When I saw Deb’s pond, I knew I had to share it with you. After sharing this post with her, she reminded me of my part in her bathroom renovation and the connection to the shower base.

Deb had good memories of bathing her 3 kids in the bath when they were little. When it was disconnected, she did not want it to be wasted.

Having a big shed to store items no longer in use has allowed Deb to repurpose and recycle many items in her home over the 32 years of living in the one property.

The pond has now become a home to fish, frogs and lizards and it makes a delightful feature to the garden with that bush outlook.

goldfish in the pond

So next time you do a bathroom reno, don’t throw away the old shower bath base.

Consider how it can be used in another part of your home, or at least store it until the right project comes to mind.

Have you ever upcycled or repurposed a disconnected plumbing fixture into something new?

Home Maintenance: April 2020

0
Home maintenance April 2020

Not a lot of home maintenance was done in April, but I did get to tick two things off our checklist.

All the days seem to meld into one so I had to look at the photos (and their dates!) on my iPhone to work out what we got done.

Home Maintenance April 2020

Ducted Air Conditioner Serviced

This was long overdue, but it needed doing and I’m glad we got it done.

I recommend getting your air con serviced annually and the best times to do it is in Spring or Autumn.

We don’t really put our ducted on during winter as winters can be mild in Brisbane, so September is usually the best time for our service. But time and budget can push out these intentions.

The image below with the mould growth is reason why it’s necessary to get your air conditioner unit serviced annually. We were breathing that mould in! Yuck!

Planted Vegetable Garden

We sorted out our vegetable garden on the Easter long weekend and all our seedlings are growing beautifully.

purchase seedlings to set up a home veggie patch

The rocket is ready to be picked for salads (and yet silly me bought a packet while grocery shopping on Saturday!)

I love eating rocket and you do need to pick it before it gets bitter.

My favourite breakfast is mashed avocado and feta on toasted bread, with a drizzle of honey and topped with rocket. IT IS THE BEST! Works for breakfast, lunch or dinner. These days, I’m having multiple meal times so it works any time of the day.

We also got some black tubs from Bunnings to plant root vegetables like onions, potatoes and carrots.

black tub vegetable gardens for potatoes

Cleaned Outdoor Furniture

While the vegetable gardens were getting sorted, I cleaned one side of our outdoor area. I’m sure I did this earlier in the year too.

black and white outdoor furniture

This area constantly requires cleaning because of the dust. The other side of our outdoor area also needs a bit of a clean and refresh. The timber setting is covered in kids paint and needs to be sanded and oiled. We will get to that project soon.

And that is all we got done in April.

I do want to say that home maintenance is an evolving process. You will finish one project and then find another to be fixed or maintained. There will be months where not a lot gets done, and that’s ok.

Sometimes time, budget and health can get in the way of getting things done around the house.

I felt April was a busy month because it was getting used to schooling needs of 3 children at home. I had to put my own freelance work on the backburner to be available to my girls. Mentally, it wasn’t a great month.

But we still got projects done and slow progress is still progress.

So while an annual checklist is a guide, don’t put pressure on yourself to get it done if the budget or time doesn’t allow for it. Prioritise what needs to get done first.

I’m glad we did our vegetable garden back in April, because 4 weeks later, look at the growth!

Towel Rails for Family Bathrooms

0
towel rails for family bathrooms

A pet hate of mine is when bathrooms don’t have enough towel rails.

Towel rails for family bathrooms should be a practical consideration because where do the towels go after each member of the family uses one? Where do guests hang their towels?

Multiple rails or racks should be installed to ensure each person has a place to hang their towel.

It’s my opinion that the racks shouldn’t be slim and there should be enough room between each towel so it can dry without touching the other towel.

The rail should also be long enough so the towel can be draped without bunching to dry between each use.

From my experience, in order for a towel to dry effectively, it shouldn’t be folded or bunched. It promotes growth of mould and bacteria.

If your bathroom is pongy, it may not be the plumbing. Sniff the towels. Often they are the culprit and it’s because of they way they are hung to dry, or lack there of.

Many bathrooms will have the towels folded over the rail or rack for styling, but for practicality, no one is going to fold their towel over the rack after they use it.

Towels are usually folded for styling purposes or when the bathroom is cleaned and new linen is placed in the bathroom. (like I have in the pics below)

I have been looking for towel rail solutions in our ensuite and our main bathroom. Both never had enough towel rails, but we made use of the shower screens.

I did use robe hooks but the towels either slid off or the bunching of the towel didn’t allow it to dry before the next use.

Multiple Towel Rails in a Family Bathroom

We only had one wall per bathroom to work with. I opted to install singular towel rails and space them out on the wall to ensure each towel would get their drying space (650mm between the top two rails).

multiple towel rails in family bathroom

The singular rail in the kids’ bathroom was transferred to our ensuite to match with our existing one. Jacob now has a place to hang his towel. It’s taken him a week to get used to it.

For the main bathroom, we used Mondella 600mm Chrome Rumba Towel Rails from Bunnings which were $64 each.

We could have spaced them 300mm apart as per interior design recommendations… but again, the towels would overlap.

Instead, we opted to have the rails spaced apart. Admittedly I did wonder if we placed the rail too high, but we’ve had this arrangement for the last week and it’s worked so well.

towel rails in family bathroom
Not the clearest picture as it was taken from the shower

It was a budget friendly installation because many of the racks start from $200 plus!

But towel racks are an alternate solution if you lack wall space. Here are some towel racks to consider for your family bathroom. All of these are minimum 600mm in width.

towel racks for family bathrooms

  1. Bunnings Bradley Sorrento Towel Rack $285
  2. Meir Australia Matte Black Towel Rack $379
  3. Reece Milli Flow Towel Rack $433
  4. Reece Grohe Essentials Multi Towel Rack $498
  5. Reece Milli Axon MK2 Towel Rack $355

Measurements for Towel Rails and Racks

Ideally the first towel rail should be installed a minimum of 1200mm from the floor.

Each towel rail should be a minimum of 600mm in width to allow the towel to be hung across with no bunching. You will need a wider rail if you use larger towels.

Spacing between each rail will depend on the size of your towels and what will look aesthetically pleasing.

At the end of the day, the towel rail placement needs to suit your family and what space is available on the bathroom wall.

It’s my hope I won’t have to remind my kids to hang their towels now after they’ve used them.  They’ve each got their own rail to hang their towel.

Pick up your towel bathroom mat

I might have unrealistic expectations on that one though. 😉

How do you hang towels in your bathroom? Did you bathroom design allow enough rails for the members in your family?

Modern Coastal Bathroom Ideas

Modern coastal bathroom design

If you’re after some modern coastal bathroom ideas, this post has plenty of inspiration to help you.

A coastal bathroom is a relaxed style of bathroom, using colours and textures inspired by the beach.

To create a modern coastal bathroom, you will want to incorporate natural materials and neutral tones in your design.

Features of a Modern Coastal Bathroom

  • White basins and baths in oval and round shapes
  • Chrome or brushed nickel tapware
  • Timber vanities with stone benchtops
  • Crisp white walls
  • Tiles with texture but in neutral colours of white, beige and grey with accent tiles in greys and blues, white grout lines
  • Wall hung or concealed cistern toilets
  • Jute rugs and baskets for warmth and texture
  • Draping greenery like devils ivy and pothos plants
  • Natural light with skylights or a large window
  • Minimalistic fixtures with concealed plumbing – wall hung vanities, wet room open space design
  • Woven pendant light and timber accents like stools and wooden bath caddy

Most modern coastal bathrooms will be predominantly all white, with chrome tapware, timber or white vanity and furnishings with natural accents to warm the space.

modern coastal bathroom mood board

But if you need to add some colour, don’t be afraid to incorporate moodier tones like navy, beige grey and dark blues. Even pinks from an ocean view sunset can work with a coastal theme.

Matte black tapware can also work with this style of bathroom.  Just balance the space with lighter surface areas and ensure there is a large amount of natural light to give the bathroom it’s reputable bright and breezy look.

Modern Day Iso Proverbs 31 Woman

Modern Day Iso Proverbs 31 Woman

Two years ago I re-wrote Proverbs 31 for the modern day woman as a tribute to Mother’s Day.

The original NLT bible version is framed on my desk. This scripture will always inspire and influence my decisions as I raise my family.

But after reading my Modern Day Proverbs 31 Woman penned back in 2018, I realized how different life has changed since I wrote it.

And so, with a bit of tongue-in-cheek and exasperation, I have rewritten Proverbs 31, for the modern day Iso woman.

You may not have kids and still relate to some of the musings in my version of this scripture.

For others, you may not relate at all, and that’s ok.

I’m so very grateful to be a mum and I am lucky to be able to have resources to fall back on. But it’s also ok to acknowledge the frustration and overwhelm during this time.

Proverbs 31 Woman Iso Style

A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds… or a 24 pack of toilet rolls, or a 1kg packet of flour or a bottle of hand sanitizer in 2020.

Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it… especially when she cooks, cleans, ensures all the kids have done their homeschooling while also attempting to do her own paid work from home.

She organises the Mother’s Day gifts and Birthday day gifts 3 weeks in advance because who knows when Australia Post will deliver. She knows her husband will remember 4 weeks later and sometimes, not at all.

Never spiteful, she loves her family generously. She graciously balances the ever changing needs of her family. Screen time limits have gone out the window.

She tailors the new normal to ensure less disruption to those around her, despite the cost to her mental state and expanding waist line.

She shops for linens at online stores. Someone has to buy an appreciation present for the kids’ new teacher.

Her Facebook feed is filled with articles on how she can fill her time at home by learning a new hobby or starting a new project!

Her mind is like an overloaded iPhone with so many apps open and the cloud storage at near capacity. It’s frazzled with information and a need for answers.

She used to dream of sailing away on a cruise ship, but the Ruby Princess sealed that decision shut forever.

She stays up until the early hours of the morning to catch up on activities not done during the day like watching an episode on Netflix or online shopping.

She doesn’t sleep despite being bone tired. When she finally does fall asleep, it’s time to wake and start the madness of doing it all again.

She hovers from one child to the next to the next during home schooling.

She has 150 website tabs open on her iPhone, iPad and laptop, madly googling all the answers to questions she doesn’t know. How could she write a blog and not know the basics of correct grammar?!

She watches 10 minute videos on problem solving to understand how to answer her child’s question. She’s interrupted by another child with a different question, disrupting her concentration and no closer to the answer to the first question.

She provides 750 snacks per day to ensure tummies are filled and minds are nourished.

She bookmarks interior articles and pins dream rooms on Pinterest, in the hope she will live in something just as clean and tidy, one day.

She plants a vegetable garden in the hope it will reduce the grocery costs despite it costing her a weeks worth of groceries to set it up.

She adds greenery to her home by buying a million plants, in the hope it will clean the air and hide a multitude of undone chores.

She senses the worth of her work and is counting down the days till her kids go back to school and when life can resume some sort of normality once again.

She’s skilled in crafts of home and hearth – like vacuuming LEGO, wiping toothpaste trails, collecting cups of water, sniffing clothes and eye-spying empty toilet rolls.

She will get on top of her to-do-list when the kids move out of home.

She used to be quick to say yes to anyone in need. Now she says yes to what she can handle. She’s thankful lockdown rules have cancelled all volunteer meetings until further notice.

She doesn’t worry about her family when it gets cold. With everyone home in iso, there’s enough heat to keep warm. The oven increases everyone’s insulation.

She buys her own clothing online. Each delivery bringing a skip to her step as she signs for a new package at the front door.

Her husband is greatly respected, when he deliberates with his work colleagues. He’s amazed with what his wife has done while he’s been at work, and thanks God he can escape to work so it’s not him trying to school the kids.

She declutters her house but has nowhere to send the goods because Vinnies is closed. So the piles keep piling and the house looks messier than it was before the culling.

She is clothed in pyjamas and a messy bun one day, soft pants and bed hair the next. She dresses business from the waist up for zoom meetings.

She laughs and has no fear of the future because surely 2020 couldn’t get much worse?!

When she speaks, she always has something worthwhile to say like,

“When was the last time you brushed your teeth?”

“Why do you have undies on your head?”

“Do you act like this in front of your teachers at school?”

She accidentally teaches her children 4 letter words not found on the sight words list.

Her children respect and bless her and her husband joins in with words of praise:

“Your tummy is so much more cuddly and bouncy!”

“I don’t think you should repeat tonight’s dinner, mummy.”

“I can’t wait to go back to school.”

Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades, as this mum knows. She has more wrinkles, stretch marks and tummy rolls. She has less patience, finger nails and boobs.

Yet this woman is a woman to be admired and praised.

She survives each day on prayer, coffee, chocolate and a vineyard.

Give her everything she deserves! A sleep in, a pay rise, a personal assistant, a cleaner, a chef, a hairdresser, a full day with a beautician – a teacher! (praise be for teachers!)

Festoon her life with praises – she may be tired and weary, heavy and hairy – yet she hasn’t given up!

She’s still the hot mess before all of this started.

Oh Modern Day ISO Proverbs 31 Woman, you do deserve a raise!

Bec with her girls

Happy Mother’s Day to all mums out there. We truly are blessed and one day we will reflect on this time as some of the best memories made with our children, even if we limp each day to bedtime.

Change Your Tap Buttons For an Easy Bathroom Update

The tap buttons are the first item people notice when they wash their hands.

Over time they can fade or turn yellow. Replacing them is quite simple.

Our main bathroom is used by guests and I like to keep it as clean as possible.

This can be a difficult feat when I have girls that like to squeeze more toothpaste in the basin than on their toothbrushes. At least toothpaste is fairly easy to scrub off.

One thing that had been grating me a little in the main bathroom was the dis-colouration of the tap buttons on the bath and basin taps.

If there is one thing that can date the taps in your bathroom, it’s the discoloured white tap buttons that differentiate which tap is hot or cold.

I changed the tap buttons and it’s lifted the bath and basin 100%. If you have similar taps to me, you can easily change the tap buttons yourself by purchasing the buttons from your local Reece plumbing store.

You will need to use a shifter to undo the tap button (turn shifter LEFT when loosening the tap button). When doing this use your other hand to hold the tap handle as the motion can turn the tap on. The buttons can be hard to loosen if they haven’t ever been removed.

The tap buttons simply unscrew from the top of the handle and the new ones can be re-screwed in. Easy.

Choose the right tap buttons

Check which size you need as the buttons can come in two depths – 5mm or 10mm. I needed 5mm for all of mine.

If you don’t know which size you need, measure your existing tap buttons to find out.

My leftover yellow buttons would normally be upcycled into cufflinks, which I used to do many years ago as part of the blog.

Anyway, I digress, if your buttons are looking a little worse for wear, go and replace them.

It’s an easy job you can do, and will make a big difference to your bathroom. Make sure you put the hot button on the left and cold button on the right when facing the taps. I have been to homes where the buttons have been inserted on the wrong tap.

Before you get new buttons, take the old buttons out first and take them with you when you purchase the news ones to ensure the new ones will fit. There are some buttons that are red and blue and may need the same buttons to be replaced.

It’s the most smallest detail that can make a big impact.

Our Date Night Picnic In The Living Room

Our Date Night Picnic in The Living Room with grazing platter and champagne

This May long weekend, we were supposed to be at a rainforest retreat for two nights to celebrate our 15 year wedding anniversary.

Instead, we will be painting our house and ticking off items on our home maintenance checklist.

Last night, we decided to celebrate in style by having a date night picnic in the living room.

The girls helped to set the scene by vacuuming the floor and setting up the coffee table, ready for the grazing box Jacob had organised from Grove and Hollow.

I didn’t want to dishearten their efforts with setting the cutlery on the table, knowing it was going to be a night of grazing with our hands.

The native floral arrangement was collated on our usual walk around the block and the ‘yay’ napkins from a previous Birthday party. The hessian tablecloth was a piece of cloth I had used for a styling project a few years ago. And tea lights make everything special and romantic.

We got the grazing box delivered at 5pm to ensure it’s freshness for our dinner. It was a contactless delivery, placed at our front door. The box was so beautifully presented and I couldn’t wait to dig in.

But we waited until the girls were given their dinner and were put to bed with iPads (a very rare event) so we could enjoy the platter.

Our grazing box had a mix of sweet and savoury. We didn’t finish it and had some for lunch the next day.

The girls did come out at around 8pm to see what was left. They enjoyed a few quiches and of course the marshmallows and Ferrero Rocher chocolates.

Our grazing box cost $135 including delivery. You can get smaller boxes, but Jacob chose this one due to the selection it included.

It’s certainly not going to be the last time we order a grazing box. The presentation was awesome and that made it all the more special for our anniversary.

Ever had a date night picnic in the living room? How have you celebrated special milestones in isolation?
